IPM NEWS international IPM news and programs Application Equipment Standards Updated In the pesticide application equation, compounds applied are often closely regulated, scrutinized, and monitored, but, ironically, the devices used to apply them are all but ignored. Poorly designed, sloppily maintained, improperly adjusted, and careless operated equipment has vast potential to jeopardize the operator, the environment, and the target crop no matter how "safe" the actual material applied. FAO (the U.N. Food and Agric. Organization) long ago recognized the problem and developed a set of sprayer standards which have now been revised, expanded, and updated as FAO GUIDELINES FOR AGRICULTURAL PESTICIDE SPRAYERS. Available in English, Spanish, and French versions as downloads from the website: www.fao.org/ag/AGS/agse/activity.htm (scroll down to "Pesticide Application Technology" section), or as publications, the various volumes in the series address key topics such as: minimum requirements; standards; procedures for equipment testing and certification; training; and, a recitation of "good" practices. Each of the documents provides an introduction and background before delving into the minute details, based on existing international standards (such as those developed during many years of testing at the International Pesticide Application Research Centre in the UK) and numerous published materials. The provided information should be useful to equipment designer/manufacturers for improving functionality and safety, as well as to those responsible for, or in the field performing, application. The all-text web versions of the documents, while informative in their current guise, may be enhanced with relevant visual material sometime in the future. *> T. Building for Biocontrol Two new building projects in North America reflect increasing attention to, and popularity of, biocontrol research and application.
A new biocontainment center is under construction at Agriculture Canada's Lethbridge, Alberta
research centre, including an insect rearing lab, quarantine facilities for a variety of biocontrol agents, and other elements for expanded ability to conduct biocontrol programs. The Can. million center is expect to broaden opportunities for research and development, as well as attract international research collaboration. *> R. DeClerck-Floate, Floate@em.agr.ca. excerpted with thanks from WESTERN PRODUCER, 22 April 02.
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture recently broke ground for a US.2 million invasive plant quarantine facility at the Univ. of Florida's Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davie, FL, USA, as part of a program to halt Melaleuca quinquenervia (melaleuca, punk tree, or paperbark tree) and other invasive plants that threaten the region's Everglades and other biologically sensitive areas. The new facility will provide needed space to rear biological control organisms such as Boreioglycaspis melaleucae (melaleuca psyllid) that hold promise for controlling or even eradicating the non-native melaleuca which displaces native plant and animal communities, dries up wetlands, creates fire hazards, and threatens the stability of the Everglades ecosystem. *> A. Flores, AFlores@ars.usda.gov. excerpted with thanks from a USDA news release. Pesticide Information Center Changes The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) is the new name or a U.S.-based cooperative service that provides objective, science-based information for pesticide products, recognition and management of pesticide poisoning, toxicology, and environmental chemistry. NPIC, formerly known as the national pesticide telecommunication network, is staffed by specialists and offers toll-free phone service at 1-800-858-7378 (in the U.S.) from 6:30am-4:30pm Pacific time seven days per week (excluding holidays). For those with internet access, the Center's website is NPIC.orst.edu/brochure.htm where several publications in both electronic (free) and paper form (to order) are available. The Center is a cooperative effort between Oregon State Univ. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. According to NPIC director T.L. Miller, the only change is adoption of the more descriptive name with the full menu of services remaining unchanged. *> T.L. GLOBAL IPM NOTES Three years of mating disruption research on Sesamia nonagrioides (corn borer) in Spain, Greece, and France, produced results equal to chemical control, as well as compatibility with biocontrol practices. *> R. Albajes, Ramon.Albajes@irta.es. During 2000, wildlife depredation of vegetable, fruit, grain, and nursery crops in the U.S. State of New Jersey alone was valued at over US.7 million. *> D. Drake, Drake@aesop.rutgers.edu. Research at the Univ. of Manitoba indicates that the use of swine manure fertilizer linked to weed management increases herbicide (trifluralin) persistence in soil, leading to possible advantages and problems. *> A. DISEASE SERIES EXPANDS The American Phytopathological Society (APS) offers two new titles in its globally recognized plant disease compendia series, plus a new microbiology monograph. Representing material from nearly 50 international contributors, COMPENDIUM OF UMBELLIFEROUS CROP DISEASES sets out both a detailed summary of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, nematodes, viruses, and phytoplasmas afflicting important food crops, as well as practical guidelines for their control. Editors R.M. Davis and R.N. Raid use the introduction to present interesting facts about the origins and domestication of carrot and celery before launching into sections covering various key pathogens and the diseases they cause, both preand post-harvest. The 2002, softbound work includes over 130 color photos, plus numerous black and white illustrations in its 110 pages. Another welcome addition to the highly successful, ongoing APS series delves into diseases of several economically important nut crops: almond, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio, and English walnut. Designed as a practical reference, COMPENDIUM OF NUT CROP DISEASES IN TEMPERATE ZONES focuses on identification, cause, disease cycle, epidemiology, and control of common nut crop diseases with sections devoted to each crop, and to disorders affecting several crops. Published in 2002, this softbound compendium represents information from an international expert group logically organized by editors B.L. Teviotdale, et al. The publication's 100 pages contain nearly 200 color photos (many close-ups to aid with identification) and 22 black and white illustrations. The hardbound monograph, PHYLLOSPHERE MICROBIOLOGY, is based on lectures presented during a 2000 symposium in California aimed at understanding plant-associated microbes. Editors S.E. Lindow, et al, have divided the resulting 408-page treatise into six sections incorporating 22 chapters all revolving around the theme of interactions on plant surfaces such as the ways bacteria and fungi interact with neighboring microbes on leaves and potentially alter that environment. The 2002 volume carries 83 black and white illustrations to enhance the narrative and data. *> APS Press, 3340 Pilot Knob Rd., St. Paul, MN 55121-2097, USA. E-mail: APS@scisoc.org. IPM PROGRAM REPORTS ITS ACTIVITIES The U.S. Agency for International Development-supported IPM CRSP (collaborative research support program) has issued its EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT, 2000-2001. The 472-page document surveys
IPM-related activities within each of eight prime sites/geographical regions encompassing a broad global span where the IPM CRSP was involved during the reporting period. Numerous charts, graphs, and figures are included in the softbound report. The program facilitates interaction between a group of international and national institutions, both public and private. *> IPM CRSP, OIRD, 1060 Litton Reaves Hall, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0334, USA. OF PLANT DISEASES AND PROTECTION, 2002, incorporates the "Proceedings, 2lst German Conference on Weed Biology and Weed Control," held in March 2002. Editors K. Hurle, et al, have grouped 139 full papers 58 in English and the balance in German with English summaries into five main sections ranging from "Effects on Ecosystems and the Environment," to "Weed Problems and Control." The softbound, 1101-page volume is easy to navigate, and represents a contemporary view of international research thrusts in weed management and weed impacts. *> G. Friedrich, Verlag Eugen Ulmer, Wollgrasweg 41, D-70599 Stuttgart, GERMANY. E-mail: GFriedrich@ulmer.de. thanks to K. Hurle for arranging for a review copy. PUBLICATION & CD NOTES NEW CD IS PEST-DATA RICH The not-for-profit German-based International Society for Pest Information (ISPI) recently released its PEST DIRECTORY DATABASE on CD (issue 2) offering an enormous amount of material on pests lists of pest and beneficial organisms, organizations, and professionals, and more, all imbedded in a unique matrix. Need to know who is working on aquatic pest insect biocontrol in country X? Using the CD and the easily navigated screens, a few mouse clicks pops up the data. Additionally, some of the introductory material is multi-lingual, as are pages on the useful ISPI website www.pestinfo.org. Selecting one of the CD's seven main tabs launches a "data tree," such as "beneficials," each of which enables a specific secondary box with a description of a selected item, plus a third box that offers a complete index for the chosen tab. The breadth and extent of the data contained is mind-boggling, but so is the task the Society has undertaken to keep this mass of data up to date and valuable for users. *> ISPI, Eulerweg 3, D-64347 Griesheim, GERMANY. COTTON PEST MANAGEMENT GUIDE NSW Agriculture and the Australian Cotton Cooperative Research Centre joined to sponsor publication in 2001 of the COTTON PEST MANAGEMENT GUIDE 2001/2002, a 69-page resource (Agdex 151/680) by A.J. Shaw and C.R. Watson, on the web at www.agric.nsw.gov.au/reader/10525. The Guide targets insect and weed pests and, while it emphasizes matters related to pesticide use, also provides an extensive section on IPM Guidelines for Australian cotton as well as a section on strategies for insecticide resistance management. Introductory sections cover important safety and correct methods topics relevant to any pesticide application situation. In fact, the Guide, obviously intended for Australian conditions, offers a great deal of useful, clear information. FIGHTING A FUNGAL FOE The serious yield losses attributed to Fusarium head blight (FHB), or more broadly "scab," (most often caused by Fusarium graminearum and other species in the same genus) led to establishment of the U.S. Wheat & Barley Scab Initiative ("SCABUSA"). To combat the impact of FHB, a fungal disease that can occur on all small grain crops but predominantly affects wheat and barley, SCABUSA maintains a web site www.scabusa.org and periodically publishes FUSARIUM FOCUS, a professionally constructed 12-page newsletter with up-to-date information and color photos. FOCUS can be downloaded from

WEBSITE, VIDEO, & OTHER SOURCES CATALOG OF HERBICIDE RESISTANCE It's no secret that weeds around the world have begun developing resistance to herbicides. To help answer the questions about which species, in what locations, and to which herbicides, an international group of weed scientists undertook an ambitious project of producing an "International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds" and arranging the results on a lively and informative website www.weedscience.org. The data 258 biotypes, 156 species (94 dicots and 62 monocots), and more than 210,000 fields can be checked by user-friendly methods (nomenclature, both common and scientific, location, or herbicide mode of action). The data tables are easily read and informative. Other features on the site include recent publications on the topic, plus links and access to other materials. The collaborative project was organized by I. Heap, PO Box 1365, Corvallis, OR 97339, USA, e-mail: IanHeap@WeedSmart.com, in tandem with several committees and the Weed Science Soc. of America, and drew upon information from scientists in more than 80 countries. IPM ON CIAT'S NEW WEBSITE A recently revamped website launched by the Cali, COLOMBIA-based Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), is titled "Solutions that Cross Frontiers." It includes a section devoted to "integrated pest and disease management." The section www.ciat.cgiar.org/ipm/index.htm emphasizes programs dealing with pest insects and pathogens. The site points to several recent publications such as the 2001, 76-page, expanded 4th edition of GUIA PARA EL TRABAJO DE CAMPO EN EL MANEJO DE PLAGAS DEL ARROZ, and an illustrated leaflet, CONTROL BIOLOGICO Y MICROBIOLOGICO DEL GUSANO CACHON DE LA YUCA (Erinnyis ello). *> CIAT, A.A. 6713, Cali, COLOMBIA. CURTAILING INVASIVE SPECIES A March 2002 issue paper from the U.S.-based Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) provides a nine-step guide intended to help curtail the impact of non-native species diseases, insects, and animals. The document, "Invasive Species: Impacts on Agricultural Production, Natural Resources, and the Environment," Issue Paper no. 20, emphasizes the risk of introducing invasive species that arises from increased international commerce and travel. The 18-page document, produced by a task force (D.M. Huber and M.E. Hugh-Jones, co-chairmen), contains tables of invasives with scientific and common names, plus known or suspected routes of introduction or origination; a second set of tables lists species that were judged to be potentially damaging if introduced. The paper can be downloaded from www.cast-science.org/pubs/ip20.pdf, or ordered from: CAST, 4420 West Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50014-3447, USA. Fax: 1-515-292-4512. E-mail: CAST@cast-science.org. U.S. REGIONAL PEST MANAGEMENT CENTERS news, developments Pest Information: A Data Sharing System Researchers at the U.S. State of Oregon's Integrated Plant Protection Center (IPPC) have developed a new interactive, internet-based system for delivering near-real time pest warnings and management information. The Oregon Pest Alert System (ORPAS), based on integrating e-mail, websites, and databases, provides an electronic means for sharing immediate pest outbreak alerts, forecasts, and other timely information between growers, field personnel, extensionists, and researchers. ORPAS ippc.orst.edu/pestalert/mission.cfm is still in the development stage with initial coverage of fruit crops (OFCPAS), and eventually vegetables (OVCPAS), and perhaps beyond. Events to be reported include pest development status and buildup, levels of biocontrol agents, and other pest-related occurrences. The system offers an advantage of immediacy and information sharing between various stakeholders. Users need to register (free) and can then customize their choices according to crops or situations of interest. *> W.I. Bajwa, IPPC, Oregon State Univ., Corvallis, OR 97331, USA.
