IPM NEWS international IPM news and programs Making Maize Witchweed Proof Applying a low-dose herbicide coat to seeds of herbicide-resistant maize varieties successfully controls a devastating parasitic weed endemic to numerous crops across sub-Saharan Africa. The extensively tested technique, developed by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and the Weizmann Institute of Science, was officially presented at a recent meeting in Kenya. The parasitic weed, Striga spp. (witchweed), decimates maize and other crops across the region by literally sucking nutrients out of plants that provide food for African families. In order to be effective, control methods must act before (or during) attachment of the Striga to crop roots to prevent, or at least limit, yield loss. A low dose coating of imazapyr (a systemic ALS-inhibiting herbicide), when applied to seed of imazapyr-resistant maize varieties, is said to leave a field virtually clear of emerging Striga blooms allseason long. Herbicide delivered in this way thwarts the phytotoxic effect of Striga on maize plants, which usually occurs even before Striga emerges from the soil. An additional advantage is that any imazapyr not immediately absorbed by Striga or maize seedlings diffuses into the surrounding soil and kills ungerminated Striga seeds. By the time the crop ri-pens, the herbicide, applied in this way at less than one-tenth the normal rate, has disappeared leaving the food product unaffected. Scientists developing the technology believe it has enormous potential for small-scale farms in Africa as it is economical and will not affect intercrops planted 10 cm (4 in.) or more from maize hills. Since the maize seed is treated, need for and cost of spraying equipment and material is eliminated, and the amount of imazapyr involved is approximately just 5 percent of the recommended over-the-top herbicide applications. *> D. Witchweed Addendum Test plantings of leguminous trees in Africa for nitrogen replenishment
revealed an unanticipated benefit. Secretions from the trees’ roots stimulated germination of Striga seeds well before a crop was planted, effectively denying the Striga seedlings anything to feed on, thus clearing them from the area near the tree. SPECIES INVASIONS A committee of scientists commissioned by the (U.S.) National Academy of Sciences has just published PREDICTING INVASIONS OF NON-INDIGENOUS PLANTS AND PLANT PESTS, a 2002 examination of the long-runningand increasingthreat of invading species, the damage they cause, and the costs (which may be incalculable) they incur through attempts at control and management. A detailed analysis considers the factors that influence an invader's progression through four stagesarrival, establishment, spread, and environmental impact. focus on new developments in this important field. ACS #774.* AGROCHEMICAL RESISTANCE - EXTENT, MECHANISM, AND DETECTION, reflects an international perspective with emphasis on the Pacific Rim area. Editors J.M. Clark and I. Yamaguchi have grouped 17 chapters by resistance to insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides, and clearly state that, "pesticide resistance management must be practiced whenever crop protection products are used." AN EXODUS FOR METHYL BROMIDE Agencies within the extended United Nations complex have cooperatively released two titles concerning the global effort to phase out the much maligned pesticide methyl bromide. FAO scientists R. Labrada and L. Fornasari have edited GLOBAL REPORT ON VALIDATED ALTERNATIVES TO THE USE OF METHYL BROMIDE FOR SOIL FUMIGATION, a 2001 geographic review of both technical and economic strategies for MeBr substitution. The softbound, 95-page work (FAO paper #166) includes a few low resolution black/white photos. A companion work also published in 2001 is intended as a MANUAL FOR TRAINING OF EXTENSION WORKERS AND FARMERS ALTERNATIVES TO METHYLBROMIDE FOR SOIL FUMIGATION, but spends most of its 76 pages on training processes per se and devotes just one (10-page) chapter to actu-al MeBr alternatives. Featured Paper Impact of Introducing Multiple Biocontrol Agents In classical biocontrol, if one agent is beneficial, can more be better? A recently published analysis of 167 biocontrol projects found that introducing multiple agents did increase success for con-trolling weed species, but conversely reduced effectiveness against pest insects. In their paper, "Multiple Agents in Biological Control: Improving the Odds?," published in BIOLOGICAL CONTROL, M. Denoth, et. al report that the results of their study, "suggest that negative interactions may play a significant role amongst biological control agents of insects." In more than half the multi-biocontrol-agent projects surveyed, a single agent was shown to be responsible for a successful outcome. The authors, based on their findings, recommend that the procedure of inserting multiple agents, not for cumulative effect, but to increase the likelihood of finding an effective species, should be used with restraint for pest insects.*> M.
