IPM NEWS International IPM news and programs Bt Cotton Pleases South African Growers In a recent survey, both large- and small-scale farmers growing (or considering growing) genetically modified, insect resistant cotton (Bt cotton) in South Africa indicated that one of the technology's major benefits was a reduction of pesticide use coupled with reduced material and application costs. University of Pretoria researchers also found that, for large-scale growers who were involved with other farming operations during cotton season, "peace of mind about bollworms" also ranked high as an important benefit. In their paper, "Bt Cotton in South Africa: Adoption and Impact on Farm Incomes Amongst Small- and Large-Scale Farmers," reported in ISB NEWS REPORT, J. Kirsten and M. Gouse noted that, despite "a higher seed cost and the additional technology fee, both large- and small-scale farmers realize higher net incomes per hectare due to the higher yield and savings on pesticide chemicals." For small-scale farmers, the advantage of reduced chemical applications with Bt cotton is both financial and health related; labor requirements are lower, less water needs to be transported, and exposure to pesticidal material decreases. Large-scale growers cut the costs of pesticide, fuel, and application, while also diminishing soil compaction due to fewer passes across fields. *> M. Gouse, Dept. of Agric. U.S. Starts Two New Labs Two recent groundbreaking events launched a new U.S. laboratory for developing methods of rearing, storing, and using biocontrol agents for agriculture and urban pests, as well as the only U.S. research facility dedicated to investigating pasture and rangeland plants that are poisonous to livestock and wildlife.
The National Biological Control Laboratory will be constructed at Stoneville, MS, will accommodate approximately 50 scientists and sup-port personnel, and will focus on developing beneficial predators, parasites, and microbes. The lab is designed with two separated wings one reserved for microorganisms and the other for macro-organismsto prevent accidental releases. Only organisms approved for release in the U.S. will be propagated and studied. The new, two-story Poison Plant Research Laboratory, sited at Logan, UT, replaces a nearly 50-year old facility and will provide both research and office space for programs that have made innovative discoveries in the pastabout toxins in plantsthat directly benefited farmers, ranchers, and consumers, according to a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture official. excerpted with thanks from USDA news releases.

1. A MASSIVE WEED COMPENDIUM In 1979, Holm et al published a world atlas of weed flora list-ing some 6,400 species. In 2002, culminating a years-long effort, weed risk assessment expert R.P. Randall compiled A GLOBAL COMPENDIUM OF WEEDS with over 20,600 entries, to ably serve as a comprehensive resource for helping predict which plants will develop potential to become weedy. The 937-page, hardbound text contains: 15,078 alternate scientific names; 27,108 common names in numerous languages; 288 referenced data sources covering 11 continental regions (roughly 47 countries, not counting the many countries listed in the Holm et al atlas). Randall's landmark work provides both a plant current status report (plant species
regarded as weeds, and species with high potential to become weeds) and an avenue for obtaining further specific detailed information. *> R.G. and F.J. FROM BASICS TO PRACTICAL USAGE With the addition of useful features such as "favorite websites" at the end of each of the 17 information-packed chapters, L.P. Pedigo has enriched the 4th edition of ENTOMOLOGY & PEST MANAGEMENT, publish-ed in 2002. Appendix 4 contains an extensive listing of WWW sites of entomological resources, current at the time of preparing this edition. The 768-page work progresses from basic elements, through in-sect ecology, to sections on sampling, thresholds, resistance, bio-logical and conventional management and control techniques, and concludes with pest insect management case histories, thus meeting the hardbound volume's purpose: promote understanding of general entomological underpinnings and then relating these to contemporary principles of managing pest insects. *> Prentice Hall, One Lake St., Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458, USA. TRANSGENIC CROPS OVERVIEW Everything about TRANSGENIC PLANTS AND CROPS is massive, from the scope of material covered to the 2002 monograph's 128 international contributors and 48 reviewers, to its 898 hardbound pages. Marshalling all the material, editors G.C. Khachatourians, et al, present an analysis of the history, genetics, physiology, and cultivation of more than 30 species of transgenic seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Topics range across transgenic crop development including the latest scientific state-of-the-art techniques, and explore the social, political, and legal implications of genetically modified plants. The sum of the effort is a contemporary reference and broadly useful information re-source. *> Marcel Dekker, 270 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10016, USA. Fax: 1-212-685-4540. Phone: 1-212-696-9000. HANDY PATHOLOGY REFERENCE Several new chapter topics addressing epidemiology and disease forecasting, disease resistance, biochemical and molecular techniques, and information technology anchor the 2002, third edition of the PLANT PATHOLOGIST'S POCKETBOOK supplanting the 1983 version. Editors J.M. Waller, et al, have thoroughly revised material from the previous edition. The softbound work is not intended as a general text on plant pathology, but as a reference for information and relevant literature. In its 528 pages the monograph covers: recognition and evaluation of plant diseases; causal factors; investigation and diagnosis; disease management; and, in conclusion, general techniques and information. *> CABI Publishing, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. on a lepidopteran that has been a useful bio-control agent in Australia, but now poses a peril to cacti in areas of the Americas. Both the potential hazards, as well as plans for a coordinated approach to address the problem, are set forth in "The Cactus Moth (Cactoblastis cactorum) an Ecological and Agricultural Threat for North America and the Caribbean." Authorities point out that C. cactorum is an immediate danger to cactus speciessome rare in parts of the Americasin the genus Opuntia, as well as a serious problem for nations, such as Mexico, where a range of cacti constitute the seventh leading agricultural crop. A meeting in July 2002 was convened to develop an action plan. *> FAO/IAEA, Insect Pest Control Section, PO Box 100, A-1400 Vienna, AUSTRIA. WILDLIFE IMPACT ON AGRICULTURE Bird damage to rice and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) crops, and rodent damage in field crops are two priority research thrusts identified by the U.S. National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), as reported in the latest issue (Summer 2002) of NWRC RESEARCH UPDATE. A recently completed study investigated the impact of bait sites on, and risks to, non-target avian species in or near agricultural fields. Another ongoing effort is investigating above- and below-ground barriers, plus treatments, to manage rodent populations in no-till fields. WEBSITE, VIDEO, & OTHER RESOURCES Bt, BUTTERFLIES, AND SCIENCE Efforts of scientists at seven North American institutions and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture have produced "Butterflies and Bt Corn: Allowing Science to Guide Decisions," as both an attractive website and as a hardcopy publication explaining how a mushrooming controversy over colliding interests was resolved. The scientific and public furor was generated by a small, lab-based study in 1999 indicating that cater-pillars suffered when forced to feed on Asclepias spp. (milkweed) leaves heavily dusted with Bt-corn pollen, thereby triggering concerns about Bt crops. Attendees at a subsequent workshop on the topic con-clusively agreed that credible, science-based facts were needed before any decisions were made. An international group of some 30 researchers
published five papers which, in sum, presented factual evidence that, under actual field conditions, the likelihood of monarch caterpillars being exposed to damaging levels of Bt-corn pollen was low. CULTIVOS TRANSGENICOS: INTRODUCTION Plant genetics scientists at Colorado State Univ. (USA) recently produced a Spanish-language website, CULTIVOS TRANSGENICOS: INTRODUCCION Y GUIA A RECURSOS, that describes how transgenic plants are developed, evaluated, and regulated. The site also notes those GE (genetically engineered) crops currently available and expected in the future, as well as laying out the risks and concerns associated with these crops. The colorful site provides links to other relevant web-sites with additional information, as well as those with either pro or con positions about GE crops. The Spanish site parallels the English-language site, "Transgenic Crops: An Introduction and Resource Guide." Site development was funded by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, & SERVICES PACK ANIMAL SPRAYER For instances of pesticide application in rough terrain that precludes aerial, vehicular, or person-carried sprayers, a unique "Horse Pack Sprayer" might be the answer. The HP30 offered by a U.S. firm comprises two durable, lightweight plastic tanks fitted with hardware enabling them to hang on each side of a pack animal (horse, donkey, burro). In addition to large filler openings on top of each tank, the underside of one tank houses a medium-pressure pump powered by a 12-volt, deep cycle, gel cell battery that permits 72 hours of continuous operation before needing a recharge. The system is designed to siphon water from most sources thus necessitating only having to carry the needed pesticide supply. An adjustable spray nozzle, hose, and fittings are included. *> Pioneer West Inc., 64088 McDonald Lane, La Grande, OR 97850 USA. E-mail: . Phone: 1-541-663-9378. Web: www.pioneerwestinc.com

back to top U.S. REGIONAL IPM CENTERS AND THE IPM-CRSP --- news, developments IV. U.S. REGIONAL PEST MANAGEMENT CENTERS News, developments IPM and Timely Crop Information C.O.R.N. is a lot more than just maize. In fact, it is the catchy acronym for the Crop Observation and Recommendation Network, a free weekly electronic newsletter (e-mail, web, and fax) produced by the Ohio State Univ. (U.S.) extension agronomy team as a way to provide timely, science-based information. Specialists and researchers from the key crop-oriented disciplines offer useful tips ranging from IPM strategies to other important agronomic matters. According to information about the Network, information provided by C.O.R.N. helped regional farmers and agri-businesses save over US.2 million in 2001 through reduced pesticide usage and increased crop production. The system for prompt dissemination of concise information was cited as a one of the "most effective ... widely cited extension tools."
