IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs IPM Extension in Canada: Under Pressure An assessment of IPM development and implementation in Canada during 1996 highlights an important shift in IPM extension. H. Philip, chairman of Canada's Expert Committee on Integrated Pest Management (ECIPM), observes that "changes are occurring among agencies delivering IPM extension programs that could adversely impact future progress." Writing in a recent issue of PEST MANAGEMENT NEWS, Dr. Philip points out that provincial governments are reducing resources devoted to IPM extension. Several provinces are considering cost recovery schemes for extension services and materials they provide, IPM included. Concurrently, industry matching funds for IPM research are being emphasized. Philip notes that "the reduction in government extension services should afford some opportunities for private firms and individuals to provide consultative services to fill the void." The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research reports that research trials conducted in Fiji found that weekly applications of protein bait to a small area of foliage in every tree in a guava orchard reduced fruit fly-caused losses from 45 to 4 percent. .... Data based on information from three U.S. pheromone dispenser makers indicates that 45,000 acres (18,200 ha) of orchard in the western U.S. have been treated for codling moth (Cydia pomonella) mating disruption in 1997, up from 34,000 ac (13,800 ha) in 1996.

A study found that farmers from three ethno-linguistic groups in the Philippines considered six weed species, led by Cyperus rotundus and Pomoea triloba, serious threats to sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) production. .... Managing Arthropod Pests The latest version of ARTHROPOD MANAGEMENT TESTS: 1997, (vol. 22) provides "a timely, useful reference for individuals working with arthropod pests, chemicals, or crop protection," according to the publisher, the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Hill presents a broad view of insects and their relationships to humans and human activities in the 1997 title, THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF INSECTS. It's six chapters and 395 pages cover everything from definitions to descriptions, accompanied by over 200 line drawings and other illustrations. * PARASITIC WASPS provides an up-to-date review of the pertinent biology, as well as ecology and behavior, for an important group of potential pest natural enemies. The hardbound 1997 work by D.L.J. Quicke also offers an entre to relevant literature and a lengthy reference
list. The title contains numerous illustrations in its 432 pages. * A long list of contributors provided the substance that W.O.C. Symondson and J.E. Liddell edited to produce THE ECOLOGY OF AGRICULTURAL PESTS - BIOCHEMICAL APPROACHES. Despite its all encompassing title, this 517-page treatise excludes weed and vertebrate pest species. Known as Siam Weed, C. odorata is a perennial shrub native of South and Central America that in recent decades migrated to become a serious pest in the humid tropics of Southeast Asia, Africa, and Pacific Islands. The newsletter, sponsored by the Chromolaena Network/Working Group, covers all aspects of the pest's biology and management.
