November 1997, Issue no. 47 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Two IPM Visionaries Receive Award Two internationally recognized pioneers in global integrated pest management have been jointly awarded the prestigious 1997 World Food Prize for their leadership in developing and promoting more ecologically responsible methods of agricultural pest management. U.S. scientists R.F. Smith and P.L. Adkisson, working individually and together over three decades, "helped bring about a fundamental shift in agricultural production marked by a dynamic reduction in the use of chemical pesticides," according to the announcement naming the two entomologists as recipients of the Eleventh Annual World Food Prize. They will share the US0,000 prize cash award. The Prize has been awarded each year for the past decade to recognize work that aided the world through providing greater food availability, quality, and quantity. Globally, both men have worked to promote IPM concepts and programs through a wide range of channels including workshops, conferences, research, publications, personal service, and advising. The prize winners helped popularize and gain broad acceptance for the IPM concept as well as more environmentally sustainable crop protection methods. Both Drs. Smith and Adkisson were instrumental in developing and leading the Consortium for International Crop Protection (CICP). Smith, while directing an internationally-oriented pest management program at the Univ. of California, helped bring together the dozen plus institutions that comprise the Consortium, and then served as CICP's first executive director from its inception in 1978 until 1985. Adkisson, through his long career at Texas A&M Univ. where he headed the Dept. of Entomology and then served as Chancellor of the institution, was one of the early and enthusiastic supporters of CICP. He later was selected to be CICP executive director. Both men also served as chair of the Panel of Experts on Integrated Pest Control, an advisory body to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The fact that the concept and practice of IPM has been adopted by thousands of farms throughout the world can be attributed in large part to Smith's and Adkission's efforts, the prize sponsor noted. Through helping to increase food security, "Drs. Smith and Adkisson have served their fellow men in truly exemplary fashion ... they have done great good," the sponsoring
foundation observed. Of the 14 individuals to receive the World Food Prize since it was first awarded in 1987, six have focused their life work on developing more effective and environmentally sound pest management. back to top IPM MEDLEY --- publications and other IPM information resources II. IPM MEDLEY general information, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information UK Group: Multiple Crop Protection Thrusts Integrated crop protection at the UK's Institute of Arable Crops Research (IACR) follows a dual approach of investigating new methods while concurrently working to develop improved techniques for use of current products, according to IACR's research report for 1996, "Integrated Approach to Crop Research." IACR head of entomology and nematology, B.R. Kerry, points out that while "pesticides are essential for the management of pests, diseases and weeds," it is essential to reduce chemical inputs, minimize development of resistant target populations, and reduce the risk to non-target organisms, all while seeking new strategies involving plant defence mechanisms and manipulation of natural enemies. IACR scientists and collaborators working at three main sites and numerous locations in the UK engage in a range of crop protection studies including novel methods of slug control involving natural enemies, non-toxic repellents or antifeedants, and interference with the pests' digestive processes. IPM research conducted on rice plants by the Cambodia-IRRI-Australia Project (CIAP) indicates that less than 16 percent leaf damage (up to the booting stage) has no effect on yield. To be on the safe side CIAP suggests controlling caterpillars if 15 percent or more of the leaves are damaged before the flag leaf emerges. The project also recommends the services of a crop protection specialist if leaf damage reaches 5 percent after the flag leaf appears. excerpted from CIAP Newsletter 2(9), October 1997. .... According to a recent issue of AUDUBON magazine, in the USA, "On public lands, 4,600 acres [1,862 ha] of wildlife habitat are being lost DAILY [ed's emphasis] to alien plants." .... In the U.S., the Univ. of California presented its College Departmental Affirmative Action & Diversity Achievement Award to the Statewide IPM Project for creating the "most comprehensive pesticide education program in the U.S. to train applicators, handlers, and farm workers in pesticide safety."

New Publications About Insects Two recent titles from Chapman & Hall: PARASITIC WASPS, by D.L.J. Quicke, comprises a contemporary overall review of parasitic Hymenoptera, an important insect group with an estimated million-plus species. The 488-page, hardbound work focuses on genetics, developmental biology, physiology, anatomy, and molecular biology. The 1997 volume's extensive information will be useful in the pursuit of more effective biocontrol tactics. A broader overall view characterizes THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF INSECTS, an international compendium of applied entomology by D.S. Hill. The 432-page hardback offers over 200 line drawings and 100 photos, as well as numerous references to current application of pheromones and semiochemicals. A useful glossary and bibliography are included. The product, named "Success," is derived from the actinomycete bacteria Saccharopolyspora spinosa and is said to have a unique mode of action. It can function as either a contact or stomach poison, is very specific to target organisms, and has a low mammalian toxicity (oral LD50, mg/kg greater than 5,000). Impartial researchers cite it as potentially useful for holding resistance in check and for reducing secondary pest populations that may occur when mating disruption tactics are used against a primary insect pest.
