IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Africa IPM Information Site Destroyed The unique Africa IPM Forum site, IPMAfrica, announced in mid-1999 and cited in the July 1999 issue of IPMnet NEWS, was severely "hacked" in September 1999 resulting in the loss of all accumulated discussion messages and user registration information, according to the site administrator. On or about 12 September 1999, the main computer server supporting the extensive Informatics program at the Kenya-based International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) was anonymously entered and all the records for both the Africa IPM Forum and the Africa Remote Sensing Data Bank destroyed, as well as all backup files, and other valuable data was rendered utterly unrecoverable. Informatics program leader Y. Xia now has painstakingly reconstructed the Africa IPM Forum site, added "security enhancement measures," and expanded options to include all major pest categories, plus several that are unique to African conditions. Agriculture: Crop Traits Can Pose Risks Among the overall conclusions arising from a 3-day risk assessment workshop convened in early 1999, ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PEST RESISTANCE GENES IN MANAGED ECO-SYSTEMS, was "a recognition that conventional agricultural activity entails certain environmental and ecological risks." Reporting in ISB NEWS REPORT, J.H. Westwood and P.L. Traynor note, given the acknowledgement of risk, that the workshop further concluded "the genetically engineered pest resistance traits currently being field tested or commercially released present no fundamental differences from similar traits bred into crops using traditional techniques." Apparently not all workshop participants were in accord with that position and were noted to have "contended that transgenes will have more profound effects on crop phenotype than traditional genes, and thus potentially greater impact on weed species." There are more interesting conclusions, and "a wealth of information generated by the workshop" collected as a Proceedings by the Information Systems for Biotechnology program. Printed

GLOBAL IPM NOTES Cow's milk may be good for more than moustaches in an advertising campaign. Researchers in Brazil found that, under greenhouse conditions, a 50 percent raw cow's milk and water mix was more effective than a chemical fungicide against zucchini squash powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca fuliginea). > W. New studies reveal the potential of sulfuryl fluoride as an effective alternative for treating walnuts (Juglans sp.) to kill any live Cydia pomonella (codling moths) or Amyelois transitella (navel orangeworms) in their larval stage. A program is underway in the U.S. to test the effectiveness of Diorhabda elongata (Chinese leaf beetle) as a biocontrol agent of Tamarix ramosissima (saltcedar), an invasive, woody plant first introduced to the U.S. for erosion control in the mid-1800s. In it's "old world" native habitat, the genus Tamarix is the specific host for 26 genera (with over 200 species), but in the western hemisphere where it is not native there are virtually no biocontroling agents. > C.J. TRIGGERING PLANT RESISTANCE With a history that spans the entire twentieth century, induced plant resistance remains a fascinating frontier for scientists seeking alternatives to "traditional" methods of protecting valued plants, or conversely attempting to overcome resistance in unwanted plants. PHOCUSING ON PHEROMONES An insect behavior specialist, a chemist, and a pest management biologist collaborated to produce a 1998 monograph, INSECT PHEROMONES AND THEIR USE IN PEST MANAGEMENT. Featured Paper Results from a two-year test of a widely used biocontrol agent revealed no significant direct effect on the biomass of the targeted weed, Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed), a highly destructive invasive species. In fact, researchers R.M. Callaway, et al, reporting in ECOLOGY, found that the agent, Agapeta zoegana (knapweed root moth), failed to control C. maculosa and that a desirable native grass, instead of benefitting from reduced competition, suffered significantly lower reproductive output. Further tests indicated that root systems of C. maculosa plants exposed to herbivory exuded higher levels of total sugars than when protected from herbivory, leading to the speculation that some biocontrol procedures "may have indirect negative effects on native species that are not currently recognized."
