IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs New Group Formed to Promote Global IPM A new international organization dedicated to "development and utilization of IPM systems on a substantially larger percentage of the world's principal crops" was formally inaugurated in mid-1999 as the International Association for the Plant Protection Sciences (IAPPS), arising both as an outgrowth of, and a move to strengthen, the half-century old International Plant Protection Congress (IPPC) forum. Conceived as a mechanism to meet contemporary communication and integration challenges among IPM's key disciplinary segments and to provide management and oversight of the IPPC fora, IAPPS aims to "promote renewed dialogue and to foster the multi-disciplinary, team approach essential for the development and maintenance of dynamic IPM systems," according to the organization's official documents. IAPPS is envisioned as a cross-disciplinary umbrella organization through which the various plant protection (i.e., "crop" protection ed.) disciplines can realize collective voice and strength as a major component of the agricultural sciences. The Association aims to "stimulate the development and exchange of plant protection information among researchers, extension specialists, growers, policy makers, administrators, crop protection consultants, and environmental and other interested groups." Leading IAPPS is entomologist H.R. Herren, recipient of the 1995 World Food Prize in recognition of his efforts in developing and executing biocontrol procedures for an insect pest devastating the cassava crop in sub-Saharan Africa, and currently Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology in KENYA. Other members of the Association's Governing Board include entomologists, a weed scientist, plant pathologists, a toxicologist, and a biologist. J.L. Apple has assumed the duties of secretary general. IAPPS is structured as eight regional network centers each headed by a coordinator. Eventually countries will designate a country representative who, together, will comprise a network council in each region responsible for identifying that area's common crop plant protection problems as well as suggesting collaborative regional projects. The well regarded international periodical CROP PROTECTION has been selected as IAPPS' official journal. A subscription to the journal's electronic (on-line) version will be included in one
of the several classes of IAPPS memberships available, based on a sliding scale of annual fees. Since CROP PROTECTION does not require a page charge, it is attractive to scientists worldwide. |> J.L. Synopsis of Selected Pest Management Research The Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (ARS-USDA) investigates and develops a wide range of pest management strategies. Abstracts of selected recent ARS research and findings follow based on news releases issued by the Service. Bt Maize Cuts Mycotoxin Levels Recent research found maize modified with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to protect against Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) (European corn borer) damage had 30- to 40-fold lower levels of fumonisin and other mycotoxins compared to non-Bt maize varieties. Environmental conditions and the specific Bt maize hybrid both affect the actual reduction, but maize varieties expressing Bt protein throughout the plant, rather than in just specific areas, showed the most significantly lowered fumonisin levels. Mycotoxins like fumonisin, a potential cancer-causing agent often present at elevated levels in insect-damaged maize kernels, are both health and export concerns. |> P. Biocontrol for Aquatic Weed ARS researchers discovered a new species of Thrypticus, a very small (1.5mm) fly that attacks the serious aquatic weed Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms (waterhyacinth). Immature flies feed inside the weed's petioles, the small stalks that attach leaves to stems. In addition, the flies' tunneling may enable microbes to enter and further weaken or kill the plants. Tests are on-going in Argentina before a decision will be made as to the fly's suitability, along with other candidate species, for release as biocontrol agents against E. crassipes. |> H. Tripping Up the Beetles In a study designed to look for alternative controls for Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Colorado potato beetle), known for its ability to develop resistance to insecticides, tomatoes transplanted into a mulch of Vicia sativa (hairy vetch) had a lower beetle infestation compared to tomatoes transplanted into black plastic mulch. The leguminous vetch, which impeded the movement of the beetles thus reducing their damage, also added nitrogen to the soil. According to AgNet, an 11 April statement by the European Union's executive Commission (via Reuters) announced a pilot project for authorities in Europe and the USA to jointly conduct evaluation of a new herbicide for maize. IPM COMMUNICATIONS IN AFRICA In March 1998, the IPM Information Partnership, composed of several organizations interested in fostering global integrated pest management, organized and conducted a week-long IPM COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION WORKSHOP FOR EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICA (ICWESA). The purpose was to explore ways in which access to electronic mail and the internet could enhance communication and knowledge transfer of IPM in sub-Saharan (and Eastern) Africa. OTHER RESOURCES COMPREHENSIVE Bt INFORMATION Tucked away under layers of information on a U.S. Forest Service website resides one of the most comprehensive and readable information summaries available for the widely used biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis. This Pesticide Fact Sheet, while understandably oriented toward usage in forest settings, covers nearly everything one ever wanted to know about Bt from basic information, uses, and mode of action through environmental impacts. The fact sheet for this spore-forming bacterium states that, "Bt formulations have no known toxic or pathogenic effect in humans or other mammals." The Soybean Insect Research Information Center (SIRIC) at the Illinois Natural History Survey's Center for Economic Entomology (U.S.) indexes all relevant literature according to a thesaurus prepared by professional entomologists. EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS New Device Cuts Spray Drift A new spray nozzle design devised to reduce droplet drift was unveiled during an April 2000 conference in the UK. Known as the Neale Thomas nozzle, the device directs a fanshaped air jet at a shallow angle toward the sheet of liquid spray emerging from a hydraulic nozzle's orifice. The jetted air generates modified droplet production and provides a finer spray, but one where these smaller droplets remain entrained within the air flow directed at the crop. Wind tunnel assessments of a prototype Thomas nozzle indicate less potential for drift despite creating and applying smaller spray droplets that are normally prone to stray off target. Linking air jets to individual nozzles offers the advantage of being able to position nozzles in a manner so they project spray more selectively in relation to crop architecture and pest habitat. The new nozzle is intended to help address the increasing conflict between requirements for efficient pesticide application demanded by optimized yield, versus avoidance of spray drift, elimination of off-target impacts, and maintenance of unsprayed buffer zones. |> G.A.
