IPMnet NEWS July 2000, Issue no. 79 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Insect Spotting...and Monitoring A Canadian firm has developed a unique system for identifying and monitoring insects in flight. The technique, optical sensing of flying insects, requires a light source, a photo sensor and a waveform recorder. The system is based on a photodetector, an infra-red light source and data acquisition software. The photodetector senses tiny changes in light caused by reflections from an insect's body and wings. These reflections are converted to an electrical signal which can then be fed into the sound card of a PC computer, converted to a waveform, and the result displayed on screen. The developer, Qubit Systems in collaboration with entomologist A. Moore, notes that, in addition to collecting wingbeat frequency, the optical sensing system also gathers information on the "harmonics" of the insect's flight from which a computer can create an insect flight profile. When a profile is fed into a neural network and compared to a stored library of insect flight profiles, the results help identify both the species and sex of many insects. Currently Qubit Systems is loaning automated Optical Flying Insect Detection and Identification System (OFIDIS) kits to selected researchers to evaluate the system and help increase the wave form library. Each kit consists of a photo sensor, infra-red light source, and data acquisition software. Researchers chosen to help evaluate this novel technology are expected to provide detailed feedback. > Qubit Systems Inc., 4000 Bath Rd., 2nd Floor, Kingston, ONT K7M 4Y4, CANADA. Methyl Bromide Alternative Gains Registration The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recently registered the harpin protein, trade name "Messenger," as an "alternative to conventional, synthetic pesticides including methyl bromide," as reported in the May 2000 issue of "Regular Update on Methyl Bromide Alternatives" (RUMBA). Based on more than 600 field tests conducted in the U.S.,
MEXICO, and CHINA, the harpin protein increased resistance of over 45 crop/amenity plants (including tomatoes, peppers, roses, strawberries, and citrus) to certain nematodes and soil fungi. USEPA rated the harpin protein "non-toxic and not expected to pose risks to human health or the environment," but also pointed out that it "is not a universal alternative to methyl bromide" (MBr), but can be used as a supplement in many cases because it is not intended for weed control, one of the current main uses of MBr. > RUMBA, web: 194.51.235.137/ozat/pub/rumba/main.html. (Thanks to J. King for this information.) GLOBAL IPM NOTES Research in Spain revealed that populations of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (greenhouse whitefly) had a higher intrinsic rate of increase and were more difficult to control when developed on Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato) fertilized with an elevated rate of nitrogen. > A.M. Jauset, amjauset@pvcf.udl.es. A recently developed model correctly predicts seasonal and sitespecific risk for Stewart's Disease of maize (caused by the bacterium Pantoea stewartii). The model predicted high prevalence of the disease for the past three years because winter temperatures favored the disease's vector, Chaetocnema pulicaria (corn flea beetle). > F.W. Nutter, Jr. fwn@iastate.edu. Research and industry collaboration produced BioCane, a recently introduced biocontrol for "Australia's worst sugarcane pest, the greyback cane beetle," according to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). The product, developed as an alternative to chemical pesticides, is based on the naturally occurring fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, but updated with new production techniques. > R. Milner, richardm@ento.csiro.au. A field study confirmed that pesticide use interfered with one host-parasite relationship. In this case, applications of an insecticide and a miticide resulted in an increased Florida red scale population on a fruit crop. > H.N. APPLYING SPRAYS CORRECTLY While many new approaches to pest management aim at
reduced need for pesticide application, spraying still remains an important tactic. Two new (1999), extensively illustrated, timely booklets from the British Crop Protection Council (BCPC) address the critical premise: to be effective and as safe as possible, spray application of pesticides needs to be done right. In its 82 pages, BOOM & FRUIT SPRAYERS HANDBOOK covers preparation, calibration, and disposal, as well as a survey of various field-scale machines on the market and their various characteristics. The crisp, well-organized text and extensive use of full color (photos, line drawings, and section identities), plus tables, make this work a highly useful and informative universal reference. The companion HAND-HELD & AMENITY SPRAYERS HANDBOOK uses its 58 pages to cover parallel topics for smaller-scale equipment. Both softbound handbooks devote special attention to operator protection procedures and gear, and to important environmental considerations. > BCPC Publications, Bear Farm, Binfield, Bracknell, Berkshire RG42 5QE, UK. ATTACKING AN AQUATIC MENACE With its important if highly specific focus, coupled with a thorough text and outstanding graphics, BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF WATER HYACINTH makes a significant contribution to the global effort to manage what the authors concur is the "world's worst aquatic weed." The softbound, 1999 work by M.H. Julien, et al, is subtitled, "The Weevils Neochetina bruchi and N. eichhorniae: Biologies, Host Ranges, and Rearing, Releasing, and Monitoring Techniques for Biological Control of Eichhornia crassipes." Through use of clear full color photos, line drawings, maps, and charts to supplement its text, this 87-page volume examines the critically important role of biocontrol which, the authors contend, "offers sustainable, environmentally-friendly, long-term control, and is the only feasible method to provide some level of control to those infestations which cover huge areas, are difficult to access and/or do not warrant the high cost of physical or chemical control." The work is Monograph #60 in the notable series from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). > Communications, ACIAR, GPO Box 1571, Canberra, ACT 2601, AUSTRALIA. NEW TITLES FROM CAB - II A recently published hardbound monograph, SAMPLING AND MONITORING IN CROP PROTECTION: THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR DESIGNING PRACTICAL DECISION GUIDES, addresses statistical concepts for sampling in agricultural pest management. Authors M.R. Binns, et al, fill the volume's 304 pages with specifics of a unified approach for the important element of sampling "the cornerstone of pest management," according to the authors for decision-making. Topics range from basic concepts to methods of classifying pest density and distribution, plus monitoring pest populations, and techniques for estimating growth curves or changes over time, and other relevant aspects. ^^^^ Nineteen international experts present practical protocols, as well as background theory, for bioassays of bacteria, viruses, fungi, microsporidia, and nematodes that can be deployed as biocontrol agents against insect pests. Editors A. Navon and K.R.S. Ascher have organized the 336 pages of BIOASSAYS OF ENTOMOPATHOGENIC MICROBES AND NEMATODES, a year 2000, hardbound monograph, to offer extensive insights and information about Bacillus thuringiensis with other useful information for the "new technology" finding application in agriculture and beyond. ^^^^ In addition to offering the above titles, CABI recently launched a new "Biopesticides
Series." The first two works in the series are: (1), CHEMICAL PESTICIDE MARKETS, HEALTH RISKS AND RESIDUES, by J. Harris; and (2), PRIORITIES IN BIOPESTICIDE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, by J. Harris and D. Dent. > CABI Publishing, CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR FIELD TRAINING HERRAMIENTAS DE APRENDIZAJE PARA FACILITADORES, a new publication in Spanish, deals with "Manejo Integrado del Cultivo de Papa" under Andean conditions. While the spiral-softbound, 181-page book's thrust is much broader than pest management/IPM, it's thoughtful organization and layout provide a concise, useful training format. Main sections cover insects, diseases, pesticides, soils, seeds, and ecology. Each of the several lessons within a section lists an objective, approximate time to complete, materials required, a procedure to follow, questions, and commentary, often accompanied by line drawings. Several organizations and numerous specialists collaborated on this practical document. > CIP, Apartado 1558, Lima 12, PERU. Fax: 51-1-349-5638. E-mail: CIP@cgiar.org. Web: www.cipotato.org. (Thanks to K. Gallagher for providing a review copy.) Publication & CD Notes * Manihot esculenta (cassava) is an important tropical crop and the beneficiary of extensive IPM research and development. Now, the Farmer Participatory Research Project of the CGIAR-sponsored System-wide Program for Integrated Pest Management, in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), offers four IPM FIELD GUIDES for cassava farms, covering: disease control, "pest" (meaning insect) control, weed control, and farm start-up. The graphically attractive Guides are aimed at extension workers, and provide succinct text plus numerous full color photographs of pest species and symptoms. The Guides can be freely downloaded (in PDF format) from: www.cgiar.org/iita/publib/ipm/ipm.htm. IITA indicates that a limited number of hard copies will soon be distributed through root and tuber crop development networks to extension agents in West, East and Southern Africa, and French language versions are currently in production. > IITA, Plant Health Management Div., 08 B.P. 0932, Cotonou, REP. Featured Paper A sequence of events in 1999 linking the life cycle of (monarch butterfly) and genetically modified Zea mays (maize) production triggered interest in the population dynamics and distribution patterns of Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed). Weed scientists R.G. Hartzler and D.D. Buhler conducted a survey of milkweed occurrence in various habitats in the U.S. State of Iowa during June and July 1999 and found the weed in 71 percent of the roadside areas checked, whereas nearby maize and Glycine max (soybean) fields included 85 percent fewer patches than the roadsides. While milkweed was noted in approximately 50 percent of the surveyed maize and soybean fields, average frequency and patch sizes were much greater in noncrop areas. > "Occurrence of Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) in Cropland and Adjacent Areas," Hartzler, R.G., and D.D.
