IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs School IPM Program Announced A newly announced program sets forth more than 700 IPM practices that can be implemented in school buildings and on school grounds to improve management of numerous insect, disease, weed, and vertebrate pests, while simultaneously reducing risks to human health and the environment. The extensive document, produced by the recently established non-profit organization IPM Institute of North America includes refe ences to more than 250 resources for usable information about how to implement the listed practices. The Institute interacted with 45 schools and professional IPM practitioners across the U.S. in developing IPM STANDARDS FOR SCHOOLS: A PROGRAM FOR REDUCING PEST AND PESTICIDE RISKS IN SCHOOLS AND OTHER SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENTS, which was funded by both federal and other sources, according to the Institute. The Institute's role in the effort was contributed. The school IPM program emulates models devised for assessing IPM adoption in agriculture in that it encourages users to calculate an "IPM score," a numeric rating of a school's pest management efforts, based on implementation of IPM practices. Schools achieving a certain IPM score and then passing a rigorous on-site verification can qualify for coveted IPM certification. IPM MEDLEY general matters, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information IPM Themes Prominent at International Event IPM was a dominant theme at the recent 21st International Congress of Entomology, convened in Brazil, that featured 20 plenary presentations, 42 symposia and workshops, and more than 4,200 posters and papers. The massive meeting attracted over 4,100 participants representing 74 nations. One Congress participant commented that, in addition to several symposia directly focusing on IPM, information relevant to IPM was central to many other oral and poster presentations ranging from bi logical control to applications of computer science to entomology. The event, in preparation since 1996, made heavy use of electronic communication such as use of the Web for Congress communication, registration, and abstract submission, plus collecting abstracts of papers on a CD-ROM that was made available to participants. QUOTE OF INTEREST Comment from an International Entomology Congress participant: "The sum total of those presentations clearly suggests current trends in IPM. The concept of areawide IPM is leading towards higher levels of systems integration. Coupled with new studies on habitat management to enhance biological control, areawide IPM is moving towards a landscape approach to planning and implementation. GMOs [genetically modified organisms] were amply discussed, and the consensus that seemed to emerge was one of cautious opt mism about their potential contribution to advancing IPM in many crops. Monitoring of possible environmental impacts was deemed essential, but data available so far, seem to allay most of the environmentalists' concerns. New chemistries are being discovered that open yet more avenues for multitactical integration in IPM. Finally, IPM, as a key component of sustainable agriculture, was reaffirmed as an essential factor in the race to guarantee survival and, if possible, increase the overall standard of living of a world population expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2025. A Trio of New Titles from CRC Press INSECT TRANSGENESIS, METHODS AND APPLICATIONS Addressing topical aspects ranging from successes to risks, this 424-page volume, edited by A.M. Handler and A.A. James, incorporates 20 chapters by 39 international contributors. The publisher labels the hardbound work "the first publication to describe in a comprehensive manner the various methodologies available, possible applications, and the risk assessment and regulatory issues involved in this fascinating area of research." Published in 2000. HETEROPTERA OF ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE Editors C.W. Schaefer and A.R. Panizzi have assembled an exhaustive all-text monograph said to be the most thorough, detailed account of true bugs published to date. The 37,000 described species of this suborder include many pests and disease vectors. The 856-page, hardbound book represents contributions from 34 authors in 11 nations. Two broad sections, following an introductory general view of the subject by the
editors, cover harmful bugs and useful bugs, the latter including aquatic bugs and several other species. Entries include life histories, plus copious references. AMERICAN INSECTS 2nd edition, A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico Fifteen years after the first edition, which was the first such handbook to be compiled in American entomology, the second edition of R.H. Arnett, Jr.'s massive tome has been revamped and improved with: * captions (left out of the 1st edition) restored for what now are the more than 1,500 photos and line drawings; * cladistics used to determine relationships; * bibliographic entries expanded and updated; and, * many identification keys revised for uniformity. In the softbound volume's 1,024 pages, every order, family, and genus is numbered and indexed making the landmark work a convenient tool for identifying insects and determining taxonomic position, and is thus broadly useful to areas other than the specified geographic region. |> C. However, two slightly older, Africa-oriented titles that were not mentioned when they were first published (in 1996 and 1997) were judged to be important information resources and so are cited herewith. With over 90 full color and black/white illustrations, MITE PESTS AND THEIR PREDATORS ON CULTIVATED PLANTS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, VEGETABLES AND BERRIES, published in 1996, provides useful and comprehensive textual and visual information. Author M.K.P. Smith Meyer definitively lists distinguishing characteristics, the nature of feeding injuries caused, methods for field diagnosis, and more for each species, as well as various measures for their management and control. Other sections of the softbound, 90-page work address collecting, preserving, sampling and examining techniques. In 1997, arachnologists A.S. Dippenaar-Schoeman and R. Jocque produced AFRICAN SPIDERS, AN IDENTIFICATION MANUAL, a complete list of all 892 genera recorded for the region and the most comprehensive work on African arachnida to date. The extensively illustrated hardbound volume provides keys for 71 spider families, along with diagnostic and descriptive characteristics and habitat details. Distribution records, notes on natural history of each family, overviews of research, and information of phylogeny and taxonomy can be found in the work's 392 pages, of course accompanied by a full bibliography.
