IPMnet NEWS December 2000, Issue no. 84 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs Pest Management Research Synopsis The Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (ARS-USDA) investigates and develops a wide range of pest management strategies. Abstracts of selected recent ARS research programs follow based on news releases issued by the Service. Massive Database of Noxious Weeds What do Cirsium arvense (Canada thistle) and Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed) have in common? They are the two most frequently cited noxious weed species in a massive database for NOXIOUS WEEDS IN THE US AND CANADA covering 48 U.S. states and the six southern Canadian provinces. The up-to-date list, at the website: invader.dbs.umt.edu/noxious_weeds can be searched in several ways, and is an integral part of the larger "Invaders Database System" aimed at early detection, alert, and tracking of invasive alien plants and weedy natives. *> K. Skinner, KSkinner@sidney.ars.usda.gov. Fungus As a Biocontrol A beneficial fungus that ravages Tetanops myopaeformis (Roder) (sugarbeet root maggot) could provide a new, natural defense against the pest. Sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) seed coated with the fungus, Syngliocladium tetanopsis, could be used in soils where maggot-killing chemicals can harm non-target insects, or endanger groundwater. Use of the fungus, which doesn't infect plants, could also spare seedlings from phytotoxic harm caused by some insecticides. *> A. Smigocki, Smigocki@asrr.arsusda.gov. New Insecticide for Cotton At least two key pest insects in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) that have developed resistance to most commonly used insecticides were found to be susceptible to new products incorporating the active ingredient spinosad, (a mixture of spinosyn A and spinosyn D, two molecules derived from a bacteria through natural fermentation). Research also established that spinosad is nontoxic to beneficial insects. *> I.W. Kirk, I-Kirk@tamu.edu. Combination Cuts Pesticide Use Speaking of cotton, new research suggests that pest insect scouting and multispectral imagery data can be combined to create a geo-referenced pest density map to develop variable insecticide prescriptions and a more effective, environmentally sensitive, and economic method of controlling a key insect pest, Lygus lineolaris, (tarnished plant bug). The pest density map would be used by ground equipment to apply pesticide only where needed. The method not only reduces total pesticide used, but varies the spray coverage and creates unsprayed areas to encourage beneficial insects. *> J.L. Willers, JWillers@ra.msstate.edu. Improved Method for Identifying Parasitic Wasps Scientists have devised a genetic technique that identifies the larvae of several parasitic wasp species, a method that is both easier and faster than the previous months-long process of rearing the parasites to their adult stage. To date, the method has been used to identify
both Peristenus digoneutis, a 63.5mm-long wasp that attacks Lygus lineolaris (tarnished plant bug), a pest of many crops, and P. conradi, a parasite of Adelphocoris lineolatus (alfalfa plant bug). *> W.H. IPM MEDLEY general matters, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information GLOBAL IPM NOTES The Queensland (Australia) Dept. of Natural Resources recently completed a project working with service utilities, industry groups, and departments to develop protocols and guidelines for systematically preventing spread of weed seed. The result: comprehensive guidelines to reduce potential weed seed spread and contamination through using relevant procedures and work practices for equipment cleaning and facility cleanup, plus inspection procedures for vehicles, properties, and machinery. The useful information is available in CD form and on the website: www.dnr.qld.gov.au/resourcenet/land/landprotection/weedseed/index.html. *> S. Jordan, S.Jordan@dnr.qld.gov.au. The 7th Arab Congress of Plant Protection, held during October in Amman, Jordan, attracted nearly 500 attendees from 18 Arab, and 13 other, countries. The program included oral and poster presentations as well as several symposia and a plenary session on plant protection in the next century. *> A.R. Saghir, ABSaghir@inco.com.lb. Canadian researchers have discovered a new resistance mechanism in both bread and durum wheat that prevents the female Sitodiplosis mosellana (wheat midge) from laying eggs in the crop. The mechanism will gain further effectiveness when combined with a recently identified "antibiotic" method of resistance now in use. *> R. Lamb, RLamb@em.agr.ca. See: www.westerngrains.com/01news/no400.html. A complex carbohydrate known as chitosan, derived from naturally occurring chitin, mimics a fungal disease and is being marketed as Elexa "Plant Defense booster," to be applied as a preventative treatment before symptoms of fungal disease are present. It is said to be a safe alternative to minimize use of conventional fungicides. *> SafeScience, customerservice@safescience.com. Website: www.safescience.com/agriculture/elexa.html. 2000 BCPC CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS The British Crop Protection Council (BCPC) hosts the globally recognized annual Brighton, UK, conference which attracts a huge international attendance and witnesses an encylopaedic array of presentations, plus product demonstrations, and hallway contacts of the highest order. Even more amazing, BCPC has the extensive PROCEEDINGS for each year's event edited, bound, and on the table before the first speaker marches up to the podium. The latest addition to this notable series, PESTS & DISEASES 2000, comprises a superbly printed three-volume set incorporating a staggering 1,297 pages, and covering topics from management strategies to chemistry to consumer-related matters and dozens of issues in between. *> BCPC Publications, Bear Farm, Binfield, Bracknell, Berks. TWO NEW TITLES FROM CABI In producing HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL, J.M. McPartland, et al, undertook an effort to collect information from obscure journals about what they label a "humble source of food and fibre" and "assimilate it into a comprehensive and readable format." The comprehensive result is a large format, hardbound work that not only covers the various pests (except weeds) attacking Cannabis sp., but which also provides insights into the principles of plant protection. The 2000 volume's 251 pages utilize numerous illustrations including more than 80 full color photos to emphasize the text which is organized in three sections. The 22-page reference list certainly stands as one of most extensive existing on the topic, and the book ranks as a unique discourse on hemp. The bacterium Erwinia amylovora is responsible for fire blight, the single most devastating known bacterial disease of apples, pears, and certain woody ornamental plants. In 2000, editor J.L. Vanneste and 24 other international authorities published FIRE BLIGHT: THE DISEASE AND ITS CAUSATIVE AGENT, Erwinia amylovora, a 370-page treatise said to be the first multi-author book devoted to this pathogen. Many of the hardbound volume's chapters contain what until now was unpublished information addressing the disease, the pathogen, and the elements of control and management. The text is enhanced with 26 color photos and numerous black and white illustrations. *> CABI Publishing, CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. E-mail: CABI@cabi.org. No doubt many of us have a list of often used,
bookmarked websites selected for a variety of reasons. Now, the internationally recognized, free Database of IPM Resources (DIR) has researched and compiled an intriguing, if not exhaustive, series of "Best sites" at www.ippc.orst.edu/cicp/. These "Outstanding IPM-Related Sites" were selected on the basis of demonstrated creativity, quality design (including user friendliness), and usefulness of purpose, according to DIR administrator W.I. Bajwa. These premiere sites are grouped under headings of IPM, weeds & their management, entomology & acarology, plant pathology & nematology, and more. There might be some sites on this list that could enhance your own list of "bests." Or, there may be sites that you could recommend to be added to DIR's present list. *> W.I.
