IPMnet NEWS March 2001, Issue no. 87 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs IPM Boosts Sri Lanka Rice Yields A long-term IPM program in Sri Lanka targeted at rice is paying off with documented increased yields and reduced reliance on pesticides, according to a recent report by IPM expert T. Hidaka, and colleagues. An IPM effort begun in 1984 with assistance from FAO, and including a Farmer Field School component launched in 1996, is credited with increasing rice yields 9-25 percent. Costs of pest management and number of pesticide applications have been significantly reduced, the authors note in, "Integrated Rice Pest Management in Sri Lanka." IPM in Sri Lankan rice, while initially aimed at pest insect management, may be somewhat off target; the report, published in AGROCHEMICALS JAPAN, points out that 40 percent of rice yield losses are due to weeds, and that insects and pathogens account for only 12 percent of total losses. In fact, Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyardgrass) serves as an alternate plant host for Leptocorisa oratorius (rice bug), a major rice insect pest. Another example of linkage between weeds and insect pests: during fallow season adults or larvae of Stenochaetothrips biformis (rice thrips) survive on weeds growing adjacent to rice fields. The reporting team, including a Sri Lanka Rice Research and Development Institute representative, cited a need for expanded weed management as a method for reducing insect pest pressure in rice. excerpted, with thanks, from AGROCHEM. JAP., 77, 21-29, December 2000. Study Finds IPM Advances in Food Crops A recently completed, data rich study of pest management trends among growers in the U.S. state of Florida's intensive fruit and vegetable production region reveals an overall steady decline in both usage of and reliance on pesticides accompanied by increased acceptance of multitactic IPM systems. The review study, commissioned under a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture grant, was conducted by a long established, Florida-based commercial research and consulting firm, and resulted in publication of an in-depth report, PEST MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS TO SUSTAIN HIGH-VALUE FLORIDA VEGETABLE PRODUCTION. The 186-page document, which can be freely downloaded from the website: www.gladescropcare.com/PMAP_report.html, reflects evolution along the IPM continuum by regional tomato and pepper producers.
The authoring Glades Crop Care Inc. (GCC) specialists found that "growers are successfully reducing reliance on higher-risk pesticides through greater emphasis on prevention coupled with increasingly complex, multitactic IPM systems." Prevention was cited as both the "backbone of effective systems" and as being reliant on assuring that only disease-free crop seedlings are used for transplants. Data collected by GCC suggests that "natural biocontrol-based processes carry a major share of the burden in suppressing insect pests on farms that have progressed into the biointensive zone along the IPM continuum." However, results clearly revealed that not all surveyed growers had made the transition. While the "most innovative growers in the State are now proving that such systems are commercially viable," the report notes, there remains a need to refine procedures and establish a greater level of confidence. The five chapter document concludes that, despite progress toward prevention-based IPM, "intensive fruit and vegetable production in this region remains heavily dependent on access to pesticides" to manage pest populations that flare up because of weather, resistance, or emergence of a new strain. The report offers extensive charts and data tables for actual conditions. *> G. Frantz, Glades Crop Care, 949 Turner Quay, Jupiter, FL 33458, USA. E-mail: GFrantz@igc.apc.org. Fax: 1-561-746-3775. MUSA AND ENSETE DISEASES & PROBLEMS World authority and widely recognized "banana doctor" D.R. Jones has edited a new, comprehensive, and pertinent reference, DISEASES OF BANANA, ABACA AND ENSET. With contributions from 33 international authorities, complemented by more than 250 color photos, the hardbound volume not only addresses fungal, bacterial, and virus diseases attacking Musa and Ensete species, but also includes useful chapters on nematode pathogens, non-infectious disorders, mineral deficiencies, chemical injury, and injuries caused by adverse climate and weather. The 2000 work's 544 pages additionally discuss banana breeding for disease resistance. As an expanded sequel to the long out of print 1972 publication BANANA, PLANTAIN AND ABACA DISEASES, the new volume is expected to serve as a useful diagnostic manual. *> CABI Publishing, CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. KEEPING GRASS GREENER (AND LESS WEEDY) A useful 2001 reference, COLOR ATLAS OF TURFGRASS WEEDS, offers over 575 color photos illustrating various stages of development as an aid to weed identification and management in turf. The hardbound work helps pinpoint the causes of weed infestation, and suggests effective management strategies (predominantly herbicide-based) for hundreds of weed species. Authors L.B. McCarty, et al, present an easily viewed format along with an informative guide to herbicide effectiveness on key weed species. IPM IN A SOCIO-ECONOMIC MATRIX An attractively designed, 58-page publication presents a sobering review of a farming systems IPM (FSIPM) project conducted in Africa during the last decade. The softbound, 2000 volume, LEARNING AND LIVELIHOODS: THE EXPERIENCE OF THE FSIPM PROJECT IN SOUTHERN MALAWI, summarizes efforts to develop low-cost, sustainable IPM strategies for four key food crops in a setting where poor soil fertility, not pests, seriously depressed yields and proved to be farmers' primary concern. Aside from helping Malawian farmers gain increased awareness of low-impact technologies, the multi-disciplinary project team operating under the aegis of the U.K.'s Natural Resources Institute (NRI) learned, and herein share, experience seen to benefit "researchers, policymakers, and donor agencies" in the future. *> NRI Catalogue Svcs., CAB International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. PUBLICATION & CD NOTES SITE FOR VEGETABLE IPM The new and impressive online information resource, INTEGRATED CROP & PEST MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES FOR COMMERCIAL VEGETABLE PRODUCTION, prepared by scientists at Cornell Univ. (USA) provides links to fact sheets, photos, and other data relevant for more than 20 vegetable crops. Organized into 28 chapters, the site's core material presents a set of pest management recommendations for weed, insect, pathogen, and wildlife pests. The site www.nysaes.cornell.edu/recommends/ includes profuse color photos and links to other related sites as elements for supporting its recommendations. IPMnet NEWS will gladly provide the postal address for any first author mentioned in the titles that follow. E-mail requests to: IPMnet@bcc.orst.edu. Featured Paper Non-Bt Refuge Costs and Configurations Increasingly, growers are encouraged to plant refuges of non-Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) transgenic crops that can delay, if not circumvent, development of pest insect resistance resulting from cultivating large areas of Bt crops. Experts recommend establishing refuges in a 1:5 ratio to the total planted area and in close proximity to the main crop. To investigate costs and configurations that could pose obstacles, scientists used a budget analysis approach to estimate expenditures for alternative refuge configurations in the U.S. "corn belt" region. In "An Economic Analysis of Non-Bt Corn Refuges," J. Hyde and colleagues found that, overall, costs were not significant and that a strip configuration was less costly than a block-U shaped area. The researchers also noted that a need for segregating the crop produced was likely to be the key determining factor for selecting a refuge shape. *> Excerpted, with thanks, from: CROP PROT., 20(2), 167-171, March 2001.
