IPMnet NEWS May 2001, Issue no. 89 ISSN: 1523-7893 Š Copyright 2005 IPM NEWS --- international IPM news and programs I. IPM NEWS / APPLICATIONS international IPM news and programs IPM Sites Set Up Across Africa Through an active IPM thrust, staff at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and collaborating scientists, have established pilot sites for farmer testing of "best bet" IPM options at sites in six contrasting agroecological zones across Africa. In addition to evaluating IPM practices, the sites help raise public awareness of IPM's importance and relevance to local crop production. Based on the research conducted by staff of five participating international agricultural centers, test sites began operating in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria, as reported in IITA's ANNUAL REPORT 2000. The report was released as an informative and graphically appealing CD (with a hard copy also available on request). IITA, headquartered in Nigeria, serves as the convening institute for the Systemwide Program on Integrated Pest Management (SP-IPM) among international agricultural research centers of the Collaborative Group for International Agricultural Research. The Institute also conducts an active cluster of IPM efforts targeted at sub-Saharan African crops. Among its 14 ongoing projects, four are specific IPM/ pest management efforts and several others involve an IPM component. Two initiatives cited in the IITA document involve: control of downy mildew of maize; and, biological control of the cassava mealybug (Phenacoccus manihoti) based on the parasitic wasp (Apoanagyrus lopezi). Institute scientists found that, overall, for every unit of cost that has been spent on the mealybug control program there was a 150 percent benefit for the farmer; the program's overall benefit value to date is an impressive estimated US-20 billion. Among other IPM/pest management projects involving IITA are projects to reduce plantain-banana disease incidence, refining locust and termite control using a biocide, and increasing IPM for legumes. *> IITA, c/o L.W. GLOBAL IPM NOTES A questionnaire validated by a field survey found that, of nine land management problems
associated with wheat cropping in Australia, weeds were ranked first by over 90 percent of the farmer-respondents, with Lolium perenne (annual rye grass) considered the worst weed. *> R. Jones, Randall.Jones@agric.nsw.gov.au. U.S. scientists plan to test the effectiveness of combining remotely sensed images with pest scouting data to develop variable insecticide programs that improve management of Lygus lineolaris (tarnished plant bug). *> J.L. IPM MEDLEY general matters, publications of interest, and other resources for IPM information Weed Cards Support National Goals Agencies representing all levels of Australian government, plus private enterprise, have agreed to sponsor more than 100 individual weed cards in the National Weed Identification Card Deck, known as WEEDeck, a nation-wide, full color pocket guide to weed identification being produced as part of the Australian national weed strategy. WEEDeck was devised to enhance national awareness of weeds, aid those charged with weed identification and management, and strengthen national research, education, and training with a goal of ensuring cost effective, efficient, and sustainable weed reduction efforts. The number of cards is open-ended, dependent on agency participation. Each two-sided card features high quality color photos of a specific weed at various growth stages showing key characteristics, along with its common and scientific names. The reverse presents a description (text) and a map of known distribution in Australia, plus the sponsoring agency's logotype. Sponsors can elect to support production of a single weed card, or can choose to underwrite a defined print run for the entire deck, or both. Sponsors are still be actively sought. EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, & SERVICES NEW SYSTEM REDUCES SPRAY VOLUME An agricultural spraying device that reduces the amount of pesticide applied without sacrificing
pest management results was developed at a U.S. university and is now in limited production. Dubbed the double nozzle sprayer (DNS), a unit consists of one nozzle emitting a straight downward coarse spray of water only and a second, angled nozzle discharging a fine spray of pesticide active ingredient into the water spray which entrains the pesticide, reduces the usual drift of fine droplets, and achieves improved target coverage. Extensive testing of DNS spraying confirmed a 50-75 percent reduction in pesticide used while achieving the same or better pest weed or insect control, with attendant environmental benefits. DNS technology has been licensed to Spray Redux LLC which produces brackets that each hold two nozzles in the optimum positionwhich can be retro fitted to most spray booms. Featured Paper Early Soybeans Reduce Insect Pressure A system based on early planting of an early maturing soybean (Glycine max) variety for reduction of drought risk in the southern USA was found to have a lower arthropod seasonal abundance and reduced insect-induced defoliation compared to conventionally planted soybean. Writing in ENVIRONMENTAL ENTOMOLOGY, R.M. McPherson, et al, suggest that adoption of the early planting system "should have a positive economical and environmental impact on soybean integrated pest management because this system escapes serious crop injury from some annual insect pests." * Excerpted, with thanks, from: "Impact of the Early Soybean Production System on Arthropod Pest Populations in Georgia," ENV.
