IPM NEWS international IPM news and programs Plant Pathologists Mobilize Against Bioterrorism Members of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) have organized a special committee on bioterrorism to help safeguard the world's food supply from the possibility of future terrorism attacks. The APS Bioterrorism Committee includes a cross section of experts within the plant health science sector, including several who have experience with bioterrorism issues. Both private and public sectors are represented on the committee. Committee chairman J. Cook said the group sees its mandate as "one of prevention and detection, with the greater emphasis on prevention. We're all taking the threat of bioterrorism much more seriously since the events of September." While there is no evidence that food crops have been a target of terrorism excluding destructive acts on genetically modified crop research the committee members believe that recent events clearly have demonstrated that any area is vulnerable. Plant pathologists routinely deal with accidental and natural crop disease outbreaks, but now, says Dr. Cook, "must expand our thinking and protocols to prevent and recognize deliberate attacks on crops." *> C. FAO's IPM Group Opens New Communication Channels The Global IPM Facility located at FAO-Rome recently established "eWAZO," a new bi-monthly list designed to provide information from IPM program development activities at regional, country, and local levels that focus on IPM policy, education, and research. Facility staff member and ecological entomologist K.D. Gallagher will serve as editor of eWAZO ("wazo" is the Swahili word for ideas), and noted that, "in many programs, IPM has expanded to integrated production and pest management (IPPM) which we strongly support and will report on." GLOBAL IPM NOTES Scientists using a highly specific and sensitive DNA technique polymerase chain reaction have confirmed that Anasa tristis (squash bug) transmits the bacterium that causes cucurbit yellow vine disease (CYVD). *> B. IPM OF WEEDS All too often IPM is perceived to be limited to pest insects, whereas it certainly embraces other major pest groups too, such as weeds. A 2001 publication from the Expert Committee on Weeds in Canada tackles this critical issue head on in INTEGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT: EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL. Editors R.E. Blackshaw and L.M. Hall assembled eight chapters, by an international cadre of weed scientists, that address key issues in applying IPM to plant pests, or "integrated weed management" (IWM). In the chapter on practical application of IWM, weed extension agronomist S.J.M. Sutherland explains that, "IWM is a system that involves a continuum of inter-dependent cultural, biological and herbicidal weed control practices," and further that, "the aim of IWM is to reduce selection for resistance to any single control agent and to manage herbicide resistant weeds within a profitable system." The softbound, 136-page monograph contributes useful and important i nformation to moving weed management further along the IPM spectrum. *> D. BIOCONTROL AND PEST IMPACT A 2001 publication chronicles CLASSICAL BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF ARTHROPODS IN AUSTRALIA. Authors D.F. Waterhouse and D.P.A. Sands describe nearly 100 biocontrol attempts on nearly 150 pest arthropod species, most
of which were considered exotic. Roughly half the number were targeted in specific projects. The hardbound work presents a summary table of results and a brief description of the outcome for biocontrol of each targeted pest or group of species. Biology of the key natural enemies is discussed. The monograph runs 559 pages and was jointly published by CSIRO Entomology and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). ooooooooooooooooooooo A recent addition to the ACIAR series on pests in Asia is THE DISTRIBUTION AND IMPORTANCE OF ARTHROPOD PESTS AND WEEDS OF AGRICULTURE IN MYANMAR, published in 2001. In its softbound, bilingual (English/Burmese) 73 pages, authors H. Morris and D.F. Waterhouse set out 19 tables referencing the importance of 222 arthropod pests and 170 weed species. A 4-level system was devised to assess the relative importance in 10 crops or groups of crops; results suggest that 44 arthropod pests were important in most years. WEEDS AND INVASIVE PLANTS Dubbed a "long overdue" guide, a newer 300-page field guide offers descriptions, distribution, and highly detailed line drawings of 198 species of declared alien weeds and invasive plants in South Africa, plus 36 others with invasive potential. Author L. Henderson has organized ALIEN WEEDS AND INVASIVE PLANTS into a useful resource divided into: grasses and reeds; aquatics; terrestrial herbs; climbers; succulent trees/shrubs; and, woody trees/shrubs. Each entry provides a full description and illustration; a separate multi-page, full-color section covers 100 species and is keyed to the individual descriptions. The July 2001, softbound work (ARC-PPRI Handbook No. 12) includes a comprehensive glossary plus an index to botanical and common names making the volume useful in many regions worldwide. PUBLICATION & CD NOTES PEST IDENTIFICATION GUIDE The British Crop Protection Council has introduced "IdentiPest," a fully searchable guide to UK arable and field crop pests, on CD. IdentiPest is said to provide identification information (but no management data) for over 1,000 of the most important insect, disease, and weed pests found in 34 crops. The disc offers several search routes, such as visual comparison, that lead to a pest fact sheet containing detailed information and an enlargeable picture of the specific pest organism. There is also a handy glossary of definitions. While aimed at the UK, information on the disc can be useful in many other settings. PEST MANAGEMENT CATALOG A commercial garden/farm supply firm's January 2002 catalog describes, illustrates, and offers a wide variety of pest management materials billed as "environmentally responsible products that work." A key feature of the catalog is a 22-page, full color, illustrated guide to "insect pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies in the garden and orchard," offering some useful information, but naturally including suggestions for addressing each problem with purchase of listed items. WILDLIFE RESEARCH INFORMATION The U.S. government institution devoted to resolving the interaction of wild animal species and human endeavors is the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC). Within the Center's product development research program, G.Witmer leads the activity, "Development and Evaluation of Rodent Damage Management Methods, with Emphasis on Repellents, Barriers and Attractants." While primarily targeted at the State of Florida and tropical or sub-tropical environments, a large segment of the freely accessed material organized at edis.ifas.ufl.edu has broader application and utility. The INSECT MANAGEMENT GUIDE, for instance, covers nine specific crops. The provided information is often reviewed and so is fully current. A LOOK AT HELIOTHINE PESTS An extensive website profiles a group of Heliothine insect pests, in both text and useful photos. D. Herbison-Evans and S. Crossley have prepared "Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner, 1805), (synonym: Heliothis conferta), Corn Ear Worm, Tomato Grub, Tobacco Budworm, Cotton Bollworm, Heliothinae, Noctuidae." describes this pest group, in both caterpillar and moth form, lists primary target plants, and sets out the international dimension of the group's members. PROTECTION SOFTWARE UPDATE Massey University (New Zealand) and the University of Queensland (Australia) have announced DIAGNOSIS FOR CROP PROTECTION, Version 3.0, a major upgrade from version 2.1, and designed to make the software compatible with newer operating systems. The new version requires use of Internet Explorer; several other new features are included. DIAGNOSIS is a multimedia software package that helps teach the process of analyzing crop-related problems, but is not considered an expert system. Featured Paper Two Reviews: Whitefly Biocontrol and IPM An extensive review examines recent and current research in conservation biological controlthe preservation and enhancement of natural enemies by predators and parasitoids of Bemisia tabaci worldwide. In "Conservation and Evaluation of Natural Enemies in IPM Systems for Bemisia tabaci," author S.E. Naranjo points out that while many natural enemy species have been identified, less effort has been devoted to the important considerations of determining the factors constraining or potentially enhancing biocontrol effectiveness. *> S.E.
