We had 127 junior high girls registered this year from Alvord, Jurupa and Riverside Unified School Districts. From the very start, the conference ran smoothly and efficiently and you could see the girl's positive reactions. Keynote speakers Jengi Martinez and Daima Calhoun educated, informed and excited all of the girls with their presentations.
The workshops were outstanding this year and the topics were current and on target: Science & Technology, Medical 1, Medical 2, Law & Legal, Business Management & Marketing, Police & Fire Service, Community & Social Services and Mentoring. All of the girls seemed to enjoy the various panels. Plus, our "Dream It Be It" project was a huge hit with the girls as they prepared "Dream Collages" together. This conference would not have been such a success had it not been for the dedicated work of Chair Jeanne Hatcher, her many committee chairs and the members of SI Riverside. I'm so proud to be a Soroptimist when I see how SI Riverside came together and presented such an enjoyable and educational conference knowing that the girls would never forget what they had learned and experienced that day.

result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity. The unprecedented global destruction and rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations are directly linked to causes driven by human activity: climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides to name a few. The impacts are far reaching. If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy. All living things have an intrinsic value and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more. The good news is that the rate of extinctions can still be slowed and many of our declining, threatened and endangered species can still recover if we work together now to build a united global movement of consumers, voters, educators, faith leaders and scientists to demand immediate action.
Earth Day 2019 Protect Our Species
Earth Day Network is asking people to join our "Protect our Species" campaign. Our goals are to:
“In nature, nothing exists alone.” ...Rachel Carson Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately human beings have irrevocably upset the balance of nature and, as a
Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon. Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values. Encourage individual actions such as adopting plant based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide us.
SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL
HISTORY OF SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL
Charter members of the first Soroptimist Club in 1921 In 1921, the first Soroptimist club, Alameda County, was formed in California with over 80 business and professional women from in and around the city of Oakland. With Violet Richardson as the first President, back then the first club, which changed its name to SI Oakland in 1928, met weekly debating service projects and hearing speakers on various worldwide issues that would broaden members’ horizons. The first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ – the great ancient trees which were being felled and the club lobbied the legislature, taking on powerful lumber companies and winning public support which resulted in a major portion of the forest being set aside as protected land that still exists today. Additional Soroptimist clubs soon followed along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, amounting to 15 clubs
within 5 years, with a growing concern for women in their communities. A similar club was established in Britain and here the first project sought to befriend girls who had no mothers and support a local Children’s Society to establish an open-air hospital school. Despite their similarity, neither club knew of the other and as similar clubs began forming in other cities, all without knowledge of each other, a seed was sown and a global membership was taking shape. In 1924 Suzanne Nöel founded Soroptimist International of Paris, the first Soroptimist club in Europe, using her worldwide lecturing series to share the Soroptimist concept and messages prompting the establishment of clubs all over Europe. Nöel later became the first President of the European Federation. 1928 saw the Foundation of both the American and the European Federations and a Soroptimist International Association was created to provide a link between the Federations. In 1934, Europe and Great Britain & Ireland were to form separate Federations and during this decade many service projects were taken on, such as vocational training for women and children, housing for the disadvantaged, assistance for the sick and disabled and the caring of refugees. Australia joined the network in 1937 with the first of its clubs forming in Sydney, Eastern Australia. An international convention in Atlantic City is held where Soroptimists gather from all over the world
items that were needed. Soroptimists opened Rest Rooms for women in the forces and a New Zealand club set up a refugee relief committee for people escaping from Europe.
An international convention in Atlantic City is held where Soroptimists gather from all over the world. In 1939 during World War II, a British Soroptimist wrote: “Two things are clear to us in the midst of the bewilderment and distress of these present days. One is that, as a band of women whose aim is the furthering of international understanding, we must stick together and keep in active working order our Soroptimist organization, the value of which is greater than ever before. The other is that when we emerge from this nightmare and the struggle is over we must be stronger than ever to see that all our influence is on the side of a just and lasting peace.”
US First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt is the honored guest and speaker at a weekly luncheon of the Washington DC Soroptimist Club in 1943. During this time, Soroptimists embarked on rescuing members of the SI Vienna club and their families threatened by the Nazi regime. American Soroptimists donated funds and clothing and many clubs across Europe were forced to meet clandestinely, making and mending clothes and preparing all manner of
In 1946 Soroptimists held a reception for delegates to the United Nations conferences, which included Eleanor Roosevelt, and in 1948, the Soroptimist International Association was awarded Consultative status with UNESCO. The Association was awarded category C Consultative status with ECOSOC (Economic & Social Council, United Nations) in 1950. In 1952 the governing body of Soroptimist International was founded, as it is today. In 1966, UNICEF granted consultative status to Soroptimist International for service projects for children and in 1975, Soroptimists attended the First UN World Conference on Women which was held in Mexico City. The very first Quadrennial Project got underway in the Maldives in 1978, training 20 paramedics and providing 14 medical boats to carry health workers, medical drugs, supplies and equipment to the people in the remote Maldives atoll islands in the Indian Ocean. Also that year, SI of the South West Pacific Federation was born, with Mary Whitehead as Founding President. 1982 saw the first President’s December 10th Appeal, a biannual Appeal that still stands strong, bringing countless benefits to women and girls across the world. Catherine Salt chose the very first President’s Appeal project on the island of Pulau Bidong, Malaysia, helping refugee women and children. Pulau Bidong was the first asylum center run in co-operation with UNHCR and provided housing, care and maintenance, including medical and social services for refugees awaiting re-settlement.
Soroptimist International was granted Category 1 Consultative status (now General Consultative Status) with ECOSOC, in 1984.

MARCH 3, 2019 "PAINTING WITH A PURPOSE"
FUN FACT: This was our 11th year putting on this conference. Each year we usually have between 100 to 150 girls, so conservatively, I’d say we’ve touched the lives of over 1,400 girls!
Creativity was palpable on March 3rd when 80 people participated in a “Painting With Purpose” event at the Victoria Club to help raise money and awareness for an organization called "Pencils and Dreams." Four Soroptimist members were present to release their inner Van Gogh or Jackson Pollack and take home their very own masterpiece. Carolyn Kegarice, who is a board member of the organization, was joined by JoAnn Moore, Melanie McKee, and Lynn Scecina as we followed instructions (maybe) on painting a beautiful butterfly. Proceeds from this fun afternoon were used to support the Orkeeswa School in Tanzania, Africa. We thank Jane Moore who tirelessly works to bring more awareness to this great cause. Lynn Scecina
What a great 2019 Live Your Dream: Dream It, Be It Conference! A HUGE thank you to all SI Riverside members for their support for this inspiring event and to Riverside City College for partnering with us on the facility. We had 127 girls registered for this year’s conference from Alvord, Jurupa and Riverside Unified School District junior high schools. Our keynote speakers did a great job, with Jengi Martinez in the morning, and at the last minute, we are grateful that Daima Calhoun stepped in as our afternoon keynote when our other speaker had to bow out. We also had 23 panelists covering 8 different topic areas (Science & Technology, Medical 1, Medical 2, Law & Legal, Business Management & Marketing, Police & Fire Service, Community & Social Services, and Mentoring). The girls seemed to enjoy all the speakers and panelists and we were fortunate to have such high caliber women spend a Saturday with the girls. This year we tried a new activity from our Dream It, Be It
curriculum with the girls doing a “Dream Collage.” It turned out to be a big hit. We actually received a comment from an AVID teacher after the conference saying, “As usual, our girls came back raving about the conference. They loved everything about it. One of our girls showed me how she went home and made an even bigger and prettier Dream Collage for herself. I cannot thank you enough for making this opportunity happen for them year after year.” Also, I want to thank our partner and sponsors who consistently help us with their support. First, Riverside City College is our partner by allowing us to use their campus for free. We pay for the lunch but the site is donated to us. Second, we have had a long relationship of support from Bank of America and former Riverside Board of Supervisors John Tavaglione. Then this year, we had a first time donor who is Kathleen Parra’s business insurance carrier. We are truly grateful. The Live Your Dream: Dream It, Be It Conference cannot be done without the support and help from SI Riverside members. I am always amazed at the willingness to work and support for this conference from all SI Riverside members each and every year. Jeanne Hatcher LYD Chair

March Birthdays at Inspire House
Late Sunday afternoon on March 24th, I had the pleasure of celebrating the birthdays of two lovely ladies at Inspire House, Shanna and Amirah. Unfortunately, the other ladies were not there. Not knowing them personally, I wasn't sure what they liked. You can't go wrong with jewelry so I gave each of them a necklace and a couple little personal items. The 'big' gift was gift cards for each.
For all the ladies at Inspire I brought bracelets from our "Live Your Dream: Dream It Be It" conference, a big bag of apples and a bag of oranges, letting them know those were from SI Riverside. Amirah and Shanna thanked me several times for the gifts. They asked me to thank SI Riverside for the items from the group. After chatting for a short time, it was time to go so they could get back to the things they needed to do. From Shanna and Amirah: "Thank you ladies of Soroptimist Riverside."
Inspire Life Skills Training, Inc. mentors and trains former foster and homeless youth to become self-sufficient, responsible adults and to make positive life choices through the pursuit of higher education. The young men and women in Inspire are provided with housing while they pursue an education and work part-time. Soroptimist International of Riverside has supported the Inspire house located on Luther in Riverside, by providing the residents and resident assistant with hot meals, treats, gifts, groceries and supplies and anything else that they might need.
On April 12, 2016, a group of SI Riverside members delivered a carload of donations to two board members from "Dress for Success Riverside." They expressed sincere gratitude for our club's efforts and our donations.

SI RIVERSIDE’S HISTORY
APRIL 2016
Leadership Tip: Light a Fire! Add Glow to Your Meetings! A recent survey of former Soroptimists revealed that a large number of members did not enjoy their club meetings. Coming together is an important part of being a Soroptimist. Why? Because our mission calls on members to work together in order to improve the lives of women and girls. There is power in numbers and when we unite on our common goals, we really make a collective impact!
Soroptimist International of Riverside's "Fashion Forward" project allows members to collect and donate business clothing, shoes, jewelry, scarves, purses, handbags and other accessories and/or clothing that would be interview and/or work appropriate.
Meetings can become monotonous and unpleasant for a number of reasons. Perhaps it’s because club leaders sometimes have their own ideas and are not interested in what other members have to say. Or the meetings aren’t productive, they are too
long, too often and too few members show up. SI Corona in the Golden West Region shared some ideas about their successful club meetings through their submission to Soroptimist Celebrating Success. In fact, the secret to their success, "Meeting Mix-Up," captured the top recognition in the membership category in 2012! Club members recognized their weekly lunchtime meetings limited some women from attending and becoming members. Leadership brainstormed and decided to maintain two of their lunch time meetings a month and mix things up for the two other meetings. For one of these “mix-up” meetings, the club instituted what it calls SI Corona “Afterglow,” hosted in the evening at a member’s home. Each host is given a small budget to purchase food and drinks for the evening. Though they follow Soroptimist protocol, these meetings are much more relaxed and social than the lunchtime meetings. As an incentive to attend these meetings, each attendee gets her name included in a drawing to have her Soroptimist dues covered by the club for the next club year. “I love that the meeting is not rushed and it is a great way to get to know the others in a more casual, relaxed setting. I also like that we can linger after the official meeting has ended to continue conversations,” said long time club member Seema Lechner. The other “mix-up” meeting turned the club’s monthly business meeting upside down by conducting it through a conference call. Members enjoy this because they can participate in the meeting from wherever they are located.
“The convenience of the conference call business meeting has allowed me to stay connected. Generally the conference call meeting is 20 minutes shorter than a regular meeting, plus the time-savings in not having to travel to a restaurant. I love it,” commented club member Michelle Volonte.
MARCH-APRIL BIRTHDAYS
By instituting some changes, SI Corona saw an increase in member participation at meetings, lowered the club’s monthly membership dues by eliminating meeting meal costs and attracted younger professionals who particularly enjoy the atmosphere of the “Afterglow” meetings. Soroptimist are very busy women and their volunteer time is limited. They have careers, families and personal obligations. They make time for Soroptimist because they want to make a difference and work with other like-minded women to accomplish our mission so it’s important that meetings are fulfilling. If your club meetings have become dull and lackluster, take a step back and conduct an assessment. Consider thinking outside the box as SI Corona has done. By making a few modifications and mixing things up, you can engage current members and attract new ones by adding a bit of fun, laughter, convenience and flexibility while still accomplishing the tasks at hand.
