umbers are an important measure of where an organization has been, where it is now and where it’s going. Since the Foundation began in 1991, more than $28 million has been invested at the Marshall County Community Foundation on behalf of people who love our community, believe in its future and want to be part of making it better. And over $10 million has been distributed to support hundreds of charitable causes through nearly 300 funds at MCCF. As impressive as those numbers are it’s the people behind the numbers that are even more important. For every fund there are stories of people – both donors and recipients – that illustrate the real impact of building local philanthropy. The Foundation began with a group of people – our friends, families, and neighbors – who had the vision and dedication to establish, promote and grow MCCF. The MCCF board, their families and volunteers are people who continue to be the backbone of the organization. They spend hours out of busy schedules to promote the health and vitality of our communities with a focus on creating endowments for the

long-term benefit of charitable projects and programs. And, last but not least, MCCF is truly blessed with dedicated staff members – people – who keep the wheels in motion! As we reflect on 2011 and 2012, how appropriate that numbers and people were the focus for an extraordinary event on 12-12-12. On that day we recognized the last sequential date of this century during a 12-hour matched giving event and we celebrated the people and the stories that are our history and our future. It was a record setting day, perhaps the greatest single day of charity in the history of Marshall County. It was confirmation, once again, of the remarkable generosity of Marshall County residents and those from across the country who support our local communities. Whether you are looking for the numbers or for the stories behind the numbers and how they affect people in Marshall County, we hope you will find the answers you need to decide how you can be part of an even brighter future for Marshall County communities. We look forward to working with you. Full speed ahead! Sincerely, Jerry Gates Chairman of the Board

You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed.

You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.

COMMUNITY MINDED PARTNERS – visionary thinkers TRUSTED INVESTORS opportunity connectors

MCCF connects people who care with causes that matter. Simply put, the Marshall County Community Foundation is a charitable endowment that improves the quality of life for the citizens of Marshall County and their succeeding generations. We receive gifts from people who care about the Marshall County community, we invest these gifts forever, and we use the investment earnings to make grants each year to charitable causes. Individuals may set up funds to benefit specific charities or to serve a field of charitable interest, such as the arts, educational scholarships, youth, or the environment. Those that choose to support emerging needs can contribute to the general endowment fund which supports two competitive grant rounds each year. Corporations may choose to set up funds as part of their strategy to support the local community. There are many ways the Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter. MCCF works closely with you to create personal and unique giving approaches that support your passions, as well as your personal, financial and philanthropic goals – in ways that no other organization can.

Giving opportunities that can make your generosity more personal, more powerful and more fun! Partnering with MCCF is a customized relationship focused on what you want to accomplish with your giving – and if you don’t know what you want to accomplish exactly, we can help you figure that out.

Consider MCCF as your charitable partner if you want to: • Transform your giving from reactive “checkbook” philanthropy into more strategic giving that focuses on the impact of your generosity. • Understand charitable giving, issues and/or organizations at a deeper and more engaged level • Keep your charitable investments local – your charitable investment and your personal relationship manager remain in this community (but you can give anywhere). • Give simply and easily to our community.

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. You know what you know.

And YOU are the one w h o ’ l l d e c i d e w h e r e t o g 0… 2

Enhancing the quality of life in Marshall County and supporting programs responsive to emerging community needs are key aspirations for the Marshall County Community Foundation. Providing funds for humanitarianism, cultural, educational, recreational and environmental activities is one way to help achieve these community goals. Another is to help strengthen local non profits and leverage local resources for greater impact. MCCF and the Indiana Non Profit Resource Network cohosted a grant writing workshop November 13, 2012, for

non profit organizations, board members, and community volunteers wanting to learn more about finding appropriate funding sources and writing compelling grant applications. The presenter, Judy Thomas, a grants specialist for Impact Strategies, works with a variety of non profit arts and social service organizations helping them secure grant funding from private foundations, corporations, and government sources. The Foundation Directory Online was introduced as a new MCCF resource to assist non profit agencies in finding new or additional funding sources to help leverage local dollars.

Education Matters Indiana College Costs Estimator Workshop Recognizing the importance of educational attainment in supporting the future economic health and vitality of Marshall County communities and the need to empower families in finding affordable solutions, MCCF hosted a training session on December 3, 2012, to introduce the Indiana College Costs Estimator (ICCE). The new free online tool, developed by the National Center for College Costs (NCCC), is a fast, simple way for students and their families across the socioeconomic spectrum to access the details of college admissions, the choices of schools and financial aid information all in one place. Dave Murray, President of NCCC, demonstrated the website to guidance counselors and staff from middle schools and high schools in Marshall

County and surrounding areas who in turn are introducing it to local students and families. As Indiana strives to increase the LEARN educational level of it residents, the importance of NCCC and ICCE is evident. The Indiana College Costs Estimator (ICCE) is made possible as a result of collaboration between the National Center for College Costs, Learn More Indiana and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Additional funding for the development of the site was made possible with support from Lilly Endowment, Inc. To learn more, visit www.indianacollegecosts.org.

Community Conversation 21st Century Workforce Readiness On November 16, 2011, community leaders from across Marshall County gathered to discuss the role of education in contributing to a strong economic future in the northern Indiana region. In conjunction with the Ball State Bowen Center for Public Affairs and the Indiana Humanities, MCCF along with other local planning partners, hosted a Community Conversation on 21st Century Workforce Readiness and the ties that bind education, industry and workforce development. National, state, regional and local experts in education and economic development shared emerging trends and helped set the stage for determining innovative solutions, sharing new ideas and connecting existing resources. Top Takeaways • A shortage of qualified workers is the biggest impediment to job growth for companies in Indiana and across the country.

• More qualified workers are needed for “middle skill jobs.” By 2020, more than 60 per cent of jobs will require post-secondary skills with eight out of ten requiring a certification or associate’s degree. • Redefining education as a single pipeline leading to postsecondary credentials is essential to help assure students are able to graduate on time and successfully enter the workforce. • Developing analytical, critical thinking learners is imperative to the next generation of workers as the concept of lifetime employment is replaced by lifetime employability. • The creation of strong collaborations between industry, schools (K-12 and higher education), parents and students produces power for bold solutions and transformation of communities across the region.

he society bears the name of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. Marshall County also was named after Chief Justice Marshall, a man who produced some of the most important decisions that have become fundamentals of U.S. law. By his actions, he also left a positive legacy that has affected many generations and shaped Marshall County’s way of life.

Like Chief Justice Marshall, thoughtful individuals have chosen to leave a legacy from their life’s work. Through a planned gift, they have made a commitment to support the future of Marshall County. The assets they leave with the Marshall County community Foundation will continue to grow and support good works for generations to come.

Jim dreamed of giving more back to the community, so in 2011 he became a member of the John Marshall Legacy Society. He left a bequest in his will to establish a permanent fund at Marshall County Community Foundation from the sale of his home and its contents. Jim wanted this

Due to Jim’s generosity, the new James R. Cook PHS Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund will benefit a graduating student from Plymouth High School every year.

Elizabeth Marshall Elizabeth Marshall gave whole-heartedly to her community whether volunteering at church or serving as a critical care nurse. Her generous giving continues through the Marshall County Community Foundation. A long-time Bourbon resident and daughter of ministers, Elizabeth “Libby” Snider played the church organ for many years. Later she became a nurse, working in Indianapolis and South Bend. Eventually she started working at Plymouth’s Parkview Hospital, where she served in the critical unit for 23 years. She and her husband lived in the historic Shakes House , built in 1883. members, they avidly studied the history of Bourbon and the surrounding area. Reflecting her love of history, Libby left an extraordinary gift to the Marshall County Historical Society of 160 acres of land in Bourbon. The proceeds of the sale, $1 million dollars, were added to the Marshall County Historical Society Endowment Fund and a new nonpermanent fund at the Marshall County Community Foundation In addition, Libby donated her home with 6 acres of land directly to the Marshall County Community Foundation, naming the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon as the beneficiary of annual distributions. Through planned giving, Elizabeth Marshall is still serving the communities of Marshall County. Because of her generosity and willingness to invest in the future, Libby is a perpetual member of the John Marshall Legacy Society.

Distributions to Marshall County General Endowment refers to the grants distributed twice a year through an application process. This fund is one of the most flexible and responsive of the Foundation’s funds in addressing new and emerging community needs. Designated funds include payments from all scholarship funds, donor advised funds, specific endowment funds, field of interest funds, and non-permanent funds. Distributions are actual dollar amounts paid in a given year. Grants are amounts pledged to specific agencies in specific years. Some pledged grants may have distributions that are paid over several years. As a result, distributions paid and grants pledged are reports as separate data because they are not identical for any given year. Specific information is available upon request at the MCCF offices about distributions in each category for each year.

Endowment Highlight

Craig WooLFington

Fund Highlight

A simple promise made to a friend has grown into a legacy that touches many people. At age 41, Craig Woolfington died suddenly and tragically of cancer. He left behind his wife and two-year old daughter. Mark Lindsey promised Craig his daughter would have a chance to attend college. Through the overwhelming support of family and friends, Mark and others accomplished that task and so much more. They organized a memorial golf outing and every year, a portion of the proceeds are added to the Craig Woolfington Cancer Research Fund. And every year, distributions from the fund go to cancer research at Purdue University. The golf outings continued to be so successful that another fund was started in 2011. The Craig Woolfington Memorial Scholarship Fund supports the education of a Plymouth High School graduating senior enrolled at Purdue University. Craig’s giving spirit continues to bring the community together to beat cancer and help students succeed.

Craig Woolfington’s legacy continues to grow through the efforts of Andy Caine, Mark Lindsey, and Tony Plothow.

MCCF Committees and Members The following committees of the MCCF Board of Directors are entrusted with important responsibilities to help our organization accomplish its mission. The Executive Committee oversees operations for the entire organization. Those working for Asset Development seek new endowment funds, whereas individuals in the Audit and Stewardship Committee supervise fund and grant compliance. The Investment Group works to invest the foundation’s funds prudently, and the Grants Committee has the distinct role of distributing these funds to innovative, collaborative programs in our community.

Executive

The Human Resources Committee is responsible for selecting candidates for future board members. The LMC Board Members and the Lilly Scholarship Committee are responsible for managing the Leadership Marshall County program and the Lilly Scholarship selection process respectively. MCCF Staff Linda Yoder, Executive Director Jayne Gibson, Vice President for Operations Jennifer Compton, Director of Donor Services Connie Kreps, Director of Accounting Lyn Ward, Executive Assistant

L to R: Linda Yoder, Lyn Ward, Jayne Gibson, Connie Kreps, Jennifer Compton

Marshall County Community Foundation’s staff is pleased to support the efforts of the boards, committees, volunteers, donors and all other active participants who help enrich the communities of Marshall County. Ask a staff member why we work at MCCF and you will hear it is because the work we do helps make the community a better place to live and work. At every level of the foundation, this passion is seen in our commitment to better serve donors, support nonprofits, and improve the quality of life for those less fortunate. Together, we can change Marshall County for good.

V

ision is the ability to see things not as they are, but as they will be.

The story begins more than twenty years ago, when a few visionary residents did something brilliant for all of us. They learned of the Lilly Endowment initiative to create community foundations throughout the state of Indiana. And they imagined something that hadn’t been here before – an establishment belonging to everyone, where donations could be invested together to grow, where anyone could become a donor, and where donors become true philanthropists – able over time to grant out even more than they had put in, and able to draw on a team with knowledge of the community’s needs and resources.

YEARS 36

The Marshall County Community Foundation is the result of their vision and is one public institution that is preparing us for the future. MCCF celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2011 and we recognized the foresight of the generous people who came before us, and are all around us, still contributing, still imagining. Their example inspires every one of us to be good stewards of their gifts and of our community for those who will come next.

Recognition of Dedication and Service

Past Board of Directors

Marshall County Community Foundation extends sincere appreciation to past members of our Board of Directors for their dedication and service.

The future in Marshall County looks even brighter with this unique youth organization.

B

EAM members, also known as BEAMers, commit themselves to inspiring the youth of Marshall County while improving the quality of life in their communities. They use their experiences and talents to encourage philanthropy among their peers. Established through MCCF in 2008, BEAM was the first county-wide youth, philanthropy group. Members of BEAM are chosen from high schools in Marshall County. BEAMers have completed numerous community service projects including volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, cleaning up Potawatomi Wildlife Park, buying Christmas gifts and delivering them to families in need, and visiting with residents from Miller’s Senior Living in Plymouth.

“BEAM gives me the chance to meet other high school students and demonstrate my leadership skills. With all of the community service we are involved in, I feel like we are doing our part in paying it forward.”

To grow their -Kayla Shaffer, BEAM President leadership skills, BEAMers help with the Youth Leadership Marshall County program every year. Many of the BEAM members have also attended the Indianapolis Youth Philanthropy Conference. Through fundraisers, they have raised donations for many organizations including American Cancer Society, Center for Hospice Care, Culver Community Pantry, Ft. Wayne Burn Center, Marshall County Humane Society, Marshall County Neighborhood Center, Riley Hospital For Children..

Give the Gift of Giving Share the joy of giving in a simple card! Giving Cards were introduced in December 2012 and, much like retail gift cards, are given to celebrate birthdays, holidays, a job well done, or other special occasions. Giving Cards can be purchased in any amount and given as gifts. Recipients redeem the card by selecting the charitable organization or cause they want to support from among more than nearly 300 funds available at

MCCF. Giving Cards can be purchased and redeemed at MCCF’s website at www.marshallcountycf.org or by calling 574.935.5159. Whether teaching children or grandchildren the fun of giving, giving a client a gift with meaning or solving the problem of pleasing the friend who has everything, Giving Cards encourage giving in our community that is unique, meaningful and fun. The cards are fully tax deductible for the buyer.

Standards of Compliance The Marshall County Community Foundation is in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. National Standards guide the sound policies and practices that help community foundations achieve results and impact. The 41 standards address six key areas of operation: mission, structure, and governance, stewardship and accountability, donor relations, resource development, grant making and community leadership, and communications. This “seal of approval signifies our commitment to organizational excellence. Toward that end, the MCCF Investment Committee embarked early in 2012 on a thorough process to evaluate investment management services. An RFP was developed and sent to twenty-two investment consultants. Six were interviewed and, in December, Northern Trust was selected to provide Chief Investment Officer Outsourcing services for

40

MCCF. Northern Trust, acting as fiduciary, provides comprehensive investment advice, asset servicing and other related services to help achieve financial and philanthropic goals cost-effectively. With assistance from Northern Trust advisors, new donor options were developed along with appropriate investment strategies to better meet donor interests and build a stronger framework to support charitable organizations and causes. In 2011-2012, we also broadened our communications to include social media, improved our website and upgraded our computer system. As a public charity devoted to local communities, MCCF relies on thoughtful governance and high operational standards to ensure that our charitable assets are used to their greatest impact now and in the future.

So Many Stories to Tell... Over twenty years of local philanthropy through the Marshall County Community Foundation has resulted in nearly three hundred funds and thousands of donor and recipient stories! What we are able to share in this space is just a snapshot. While it is our pleasure to share here stories of the past two years, we hope you will visit our website or Facebook page or stop by to see us to learn more. Or better yet, talk to those you know in Marshall County who are already part of our history and our future – as donors, recipients, board members, volunteers and friends. They are well equipped to tell how local philanthropy is making a difference! At MCCF, we celebrated our twentieth anniversary in 2011 and an amazing record-breaking day of giving on 12-12-12. We welcomed new faces – staff and board members and a new investment management team too. We investigated new donor options to better match needs of donors and non profit organizations and that leads to exciting possibilities for future years as well. We also continue to grow in our capacity to address priority community needs. MCCF is focused on improving the quality of life in our area by identifying current and emerging issues, channeling resources to address community needs and helping our region prepare for the future. In this publication, you see stories about a community conversation on economic development and workforce education and grants that support STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) initiatives. We honor Elizabeth Marshall and her wonderful legacy gift to the Marshall County Historical Society and we share the story of James R. Cook too. His gift is both a tribute to his connection with former classmates and this community, and his desire to support vocational or trade school students as they prepare for the 21st century workforce. Through the sharing of these and many more stories, we continue to inspire each other. MCCF is, after all, a reflection of a very giving and caring Marshall County community. And through this report we celebrate again every grant, every solution, every success story. Thank you for reading and sharing our annual report. As always, your questions and comments are most welcome. Sincerely, Linda Yoder Executive Director

And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

You’ll move mountains!

To serve all of Marshall County, its people and its future through the growth and administration of endownment funding and philanthropy.
