WHAT TO EXPECT

Expedition Cruising for Families Expedition cruising is a great fit for families, whether you are parents traveling with gradeschoolers or grandparents bringing along the whole brood for a college graduation celebration. With activities that combine learning and fun and a team of dynamic experts leading the way, each day is full of discoveries that awaken new passions no matter your age. What types of activities can children participate in? Any of our expert-led excursions, from snorkeling with Galápagos sea turtles to cruising through an Icelandic fjord in a Zodiac. In the National Geographic Global Explorers program, they might collect specimens to view under a microscope or learn to identify wildlife on a naturalist-led hike.

Are there accommodation options for families? Families often reserve adjacent rooms, and several of our ships have adjoining rooms that turn two cabins

Why are expedition cruises ideal for kids and families? They are an exhilarating combination of exploration and education, where each day is full of hands-on learning on board and on shore. The ship is casual and comfortable—a home base where your family can share the thrill of discovery and make lifelong friends with other families that are enthusiastic about exploring.

What age groups would enjoy expedition cruising? There is something for everyone, from the second grader fascinated by ship navigation to the teenager who loves the freedom of kayaking to the grandparent who never misses a naturalist talk. Your family makes memories together, and yet every generation can enjoy the experience their own way.

into a family suite.

What can kids do on the ship? Kids tend to love down time on board: they are free to roam and explore their interests, but never far from family. They can examine footage of sea creatures with an undersea specialist or visit the open bridge to see the captain demonstrate how navigation instruments work. They might read a book in the lounge, or play a board game with new friends. They have just enough independence—and plenty of ways to stay entertained under the care of our crew.

How far ahead of time should you book an expedition cruise for your family? We recommend booking as far out as possible so you have flexibility to reserve the cabins and dates that suit your family.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY

New Expeditions & Additional Departures Your passion for exploration drives us to design innovative experiences that go beyond your wildest imagination. In 2024, we will be introducing an exclusive collaboration with Food & Wine, launching our interactive program for young explorers in Iceland, and sailing inaugural voyages for a host of new itineraries. Food & Wine and Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic are launching an exclusive new collaboration to take travelers on an immersive culinary journey along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Traveling aboard National Geographic Sea Bird or National Geographic Sea Lion, enjoy unique culinary experiences that bring you straight to the source of the Pacific Northwest’s wild bounty. Along the way, guests will sample wines personally selected by Food & Wine Executive Wine Editor Ray Isle and travel with experts who will guide you through the region's diverse terroirs. In 2024, we are also offering additional departures of our classic Iceland itineraries: A Circumnavigation of Iceland and Wild Iceland Escape. We are thrilled to announce that both voyages will now offer our exclusive program for young explorers, led by certified field educators who teach young travelers 18 and under how to explore like scientists and tell the stories of their surroundings through photographs, videos, drawings, and more. New Sea Cloud II expeditions include several journeys to Italy, Croatia, and Slovenia. We will also be launching an array of unique voyages in Asia and reimagining the itinerary of a guest favorite: Ancient Isles: England, Ireland and Scotland.

A Seasonal Guide to Alaska No matter when you visit, the grandeur of Alaska is on display—but different times of year hold a different kind of allure. This month-by-month guide reveals what makes each season special.

May/June In the springtime, budding vegetation and colorful wildflowers set the stage for rare wildlife sightings, like harbor seal pups floating atop ice floes and hungry bears feeding on the shorelines post-hibernation—sometimes with newborns in tow. Days continue to bloom with more life as they stretch into the season of the midnight sun.

July/Early-Mid August Warm temperatures and longer daylight hours mean more chances to spot and observe wildlife, like breaching whales and wolves on the hunt. Summer is also the season when running salmon lure bald eagles and bears, and hiking trails are dotted with a bounty of wild berries ripe for picking.

Late August/September Animals are still very active as preparation begins for hibernation and migration— which means foraging for bears and mobilizing among the local whale pods. Fall in Alaska is ephemeral but brilliant, as cottonwood turns golden yellow, fireweed burns a vibrant shade of red, and the northern lights can sometimes be spotted painting the night sky in neon.
