GOING WHERE AWESOME IS
EDIFYING. EXHILARATING. AND DEEPLY MOVING.
The Antarctic ice sheet is the most distinctive feature of Earth as seen from space—every astronaut’s account mentions it. And the ice is what makes every Antarctic explorer vow to return. There’s a whole glossary of ice words to learn—macro-scale terms like fast ice, leads, and growlers, to more granular terms like brash and bergy

“
After breakfast, we zipped to shore at Brown Bluff, a fascinating geologic area where we found hundreds of penguins. This is a colony which supported 100,000 pairs of Adélie penguins earlier in the season, but is now reaching the season’s end. There were a handful of Adélie chicks and many gentoo chicks testing the waters and exercising their wings. The beach shallows were kiddy pools filled with fluffy chicks sticking their heads into the water, wading in, and being pushed around by small incoming waves. We enjoyed watching their antics for a couple of hours, as well as finding a solitary fur seal, and taking a hike onto the edge of a glacier.” — EMILY MOUNT Naturalist aboard National Geographic Explorer

EXPLORE YOUR WAY EACH DAY OUR ANTARCTIC ITINERARIES ARE CRAFTED BY EXPLORERS,
and every itinerary point features opportunities to head out and discover, in one dynamic way or another. The freedom of choice means opportunities to choose how active you’ll be, whether kayaking among bergy bits, hiking up a ridge to a vista overlooking a cove, or instead taking a short stroll along the shore where penguins are gathered. Our seamless shore-landing operation, perfected over decades, gets you quickly ashore to share in exploring. Your freedom of choice extends to which members of our naturalist staff you choose to spend time with aboard ship. With a diverse team with broad expertise, you may choose to join your photo instructor at the deck rail to get tips on landscape photography, or stand next to an expert birder with binoculars in hand, or join one of our knowledgeable historians to learn about the golden age of Antarctic exploration in the region we’re exploring. You can begin each day with a morning stretch class, or a pre-breakfast coffee at the 24/7 coffee/tea stations on the ship. End each day looking to the next at Recap, followed by drinks with your traveling companions, or by relaxing solo in one of the ship’s many nooks and crannies where you can read or journal.

I’m a highly active person, so always appreciate every chance to get off ship. And in the early season, when our captains can “garage” the ship in the frozen sea ice, everyone can descend directly for a once-ina-lifetime walk, snowshoe or cross-country ski trek. When the conditions are just right, it’s a thrilling and incredibly memorable way to experience this vast landscape. It also shows that there is never a dull moment, or a ‘lesser’ time to go, during our Antarctic season.” — SVEN LINDBLAD,

But sometimes even the most intrepid of adventurers need a guide—and that’s where we come in. Our team has the knowledge and passion for Antarctica that will kindle yours. DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES
“
A Zodiac foray in search of leopard seals with a polar expert had us searching the brash ice that the seals gravitate to. We navigated from ice floe to floe. Sure enough, there it was! We slowly approached the ice while he radioed to other Zodiacs in the area so they could see too. Will never forget that serpentine smile. (The leopard seal, not the staff.)” — BEN D.,

“
It was the actual anniversary date of Lars-Eric’s first expedition to Antarctica, and we’d all had a champagne toast in the lounge in his honor. After dinner, a few people noticed the sky becoming pink, then orange…and before I knew it, I was on the stern watching the fieriest sunset of my life—at 11:00 p.m.—the entire sky flooded with reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges across the horizon, illuminating the peaks. Even long-time naturalists like Pete Puleston and Bud Lehnhausen said they’d never seen a sunset like that in Antarctica. This was at 11:00 p.m.” — AMY H., Guest aboard National Geographic Explorer

scientific research is logistically difficult and expensive. Our guests in South Georgia and the Falklands will have a real chance to contribute to the scientific understanding of the region. Assisted by a naturalist, you’ll have the opportunity to join a BioBlitz to collect data. By simply spotting and photographing flora and fauna with your camera or smartphone, you can help record and identify every living plant and animal at certain key sites on South Georgia. This information will directly inform the management of invasive species by the South Georgian Heritage Trust as they seek to preserve this iconic ecosystem.

LUXURY OF COMFORT IN A CAPITAL OF WILDNESS OUR THREE POLAR SHIPS, THE FINEST BASECAMPS AN explorer could want, allow us to freely roam. They are equipped with a fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks for up-close and personal explorations. The Bridge is welcoming, inviting you to spend time with the Captain and officers, watching the calm business of navigation unfold. Our expedition ships are also equipped for living well. The lounge, dining room, and other public spaces contribute to the esprit de corps that is a hallmark of our expeditions. A library serves those who want to learn more about the region or curl up with a best seller. The observation lounge is a fine spot to gather for a light meal or to watch petrels soar overhead as we sail. And a fully-stocked bar is a place to relax or engage with fellow travelers. The wellness center, gym, sauna, and stretching sessions with our wellness specialist boost the tonic of wildness nature provides. And cosseting cabins, outfitted with our signature linens and feather duvets provide the perfect ending to active days.

“
Before lunch, we set up the kayak platform and offered the chance for a “Polar Plunge.” This was not really a swim, because those that did it pretty much jumped into the water and then got back out as fast as humanly possible. Amazingly, about 90 of our guests partook in this crazy activity.” — TOM RITCHIE, Naturalist,

DINING IS ANOTHER EXPEDITION EXPERIENCE
40
DINING ABOARD
National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Orion, and National Geographic Endurance share matching appetites for adventure and dining excellence. Each ship’s Executive Chef brings menu concepts, collectively designed by our Director of Hotel Operations, Ana Esteves, to life daily. Count on them to keep your expeditionary spirit well fed, so to speak, and for daily diversity and flavors from varying regions. Our pioneering culinary program is rooted in sustainability. We obtain fresh vegetables from a local grower in the Falklands, and fresh lamb from an island rancher. Our goal is for our guests to experience the geography through the food served wherever possible. Dining is part of the expedition experience and no assigned seating makes for easy mingling with congenial fellow guests and expedition staffers.

CONSIDERING ANTARCTICA? There are 6 important questions to ask before you decide with whom to book your Antarctic adventure. This guide answers them all: 1. What kind of ship is best? 2. What safety features are vital? 3. What is the travel operator’s experience? 4. How active will your Antarctic experience be? 5. What does the travel operator offer in terms of staff and onboard experts? 6. What is their environmental record & commitment to conservation?
Antarctica is the wildest, most remote, and least predictable geography on earth. However, because many cruise lines, sensing a business opportunity, have begun to offer voyages to Antarctica, many travelers may be lulled into a false sense that Antarctica is now somehow “tame.” This guidebook was designed to give travelers information they can use to sort out the options. It will help you make the choice that will best ensure your safety and the quality of your experience.
