Transformative Voyages for Epic Explorers
Some experiences only reveal their magnificence when they are given ample time to unfold. Our epic voyages are extraordinary opportunities to slow down and explore the world in a more encompassing way. On these extended expeditions, travel to some of the world’s most remote and least visited destinations, enjoy time at sea to soak in your boundless oceanic surroundings, and delight in unforgettable travel experiences that can only come from chance and spontaneity.
Going Epic with Sven Lindblad
Sven Lindblad, founder and co-chair of the board at Lindblad Expeditions, remembers vividly the impact of his first epic voyage— a 35-day adventure around New Zealand, Antarctica, and Argentina. Ever since, he has made these journeys a mainstay of our offerings, much to the delight of loyal guests. In this conversation, Lindblad explains how the legacy of ‘going epic’ is proudly carried on in one-of-a-kind experiences across great swathes of our planet.
What are ‘epic’ voyages?
At Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, we have voyages of all lengths—some are five days, some are as long as 38 days. Our epic voyages are longer voyages that cover more territory. We’ve
developed these trips for a couple of reasons. First, we recognise that many of our guests really enjoy them. But also, there are certain parts of the world where, if you don't spend the time, you're not going to have as extraordinary of an experience.
What are some of the benefits of longer expeditions?
Sometimes it's nice to slow down and get into a rhythm, build a pace where you can calm down and settle in. That’s one of the big benefits of these voyages—life aboard the ship becomes more interesting. You're not just a guest, you're somebody that everybody gets to know. You become integrated with the onboard community.
What is a ‘sea’ day? What are some of the best ways guests can spend their time during these days?
If I go back 20 or 30 years, Lindblad Expeditions would avoid sea days—days where you're not making a landing somewhere. I remember being on certain voyages and thinking, “I really wish there was a sea day to relax, maybe read a little bit, collect my thoughts, and organise my photographs.”
We began to realise people appreciate periodic days where they can enjoy the sea or pursue whatever interests them. Maybe that’s spending time on the bridge learning about navigation, or having more in-depth conversations with our photographers or historians. Sea days are a welcome respite from the very active nature of the voyage.
Can you describe the sense of community that forms onboard during an epic voyage?
I feel that some of the most interesting people I've ever met in my life I've met on our ships while travelling. Why? Because the people who travel on our ships are innately curious, and that immediately creates a kind of a common bond. In the beginning of these voyages, there are different communities onboard. But by the end, there's real common ground.
On an epic voyage to Antarctica, photographers enjoy time to capture the perfect shot of ice floes sparkling under the setting sun. We’re out there to learn: about new cultures, about what’s above and below the sea; to try new things, and to understand our world better. That really is the essence of an expedition.
Immersive Exploration On Shore and On Board
Each ship in the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet is a destination in its own right, with first-rate exploration tools and superior amenities to ensure that your time on board is as rewarding as your time on shore. Settle into an epic voyage and enjoy extra time at sea to explore all the ways these state-of-the-art vessels can connect you with our blue planet.
Expedition Ships Purpose-Built for Epic Voyages
Our nimble expedition ships sail along sinuous rivers, into small harbours, and through polar ice to provide travellers with up-close experiences in wild and remote places. On an epic voyage, that could mean navigating the seldom-seen channels of the Northwest Passage, gliding into a forgotten bay in French Polynesia, or parking the ship amid Antarctic sea ice. Because each vessel is stocked with a fleet of kayaks, Zodiacs, and stand-up paddleboards, we can explore even further, without being dependent on ports or piers.
Each of our ships also excels on the open water, with stabilizing technology to guarantee a smooth ride in all conditions. Generous decks and comfortable lounges
with expansive windows keep travellers connected to our marine surroundings when we’re not out exploring. Watch for leaping rays from the observation deck of National Geographic Orion on a voyage across the Pacific, pore over route maps in the National Geographic Explorer chart room, or gaze at the endless horizon from an infinity hot tub on National Geographic Endurance or National Geographic Resolution. The fleet’s stunning common spaces are designed to spark your curiosity and wonder.
Explore Your Interests With Our Experts
Epic voyages give us the luxury of days at sea, when guests can pursue their personal interests. Our team of experts—such as naturalists, cultural experts, and certified photo instructors—will be on hand, giving compelling lectures and workshops, and engaging in lively conversations with our guests. Take this time on the water to indulge in whatever suits
you: learn about navigation on the bridge, engage in an informal photo editing session, or talk about whale behaviour with a wildlife biologist. With access to a library, a stocked OM System Photo Gear Locker, and other amenities, you will find a wealth of opportunity for educational and creative pursuits.
Indulge in Our Wellness Program
Greet the day on deck with a sunrise yoga session or unwind in the spa with a massage, accompanied by the sound of soothing waves. Our dedicated wellness spaces—including treatment rooms, saunas, glass-enclosed fitness centres, and more—encourage travellers to tap into the natural rhythms of the ocean. Treatments are tailored to your individual needs, and each of our fully accredited wellness specialists is also a licenced massage therapist.

GARIBALDI FJORD
To discover more daily expedition reports, go to expeditions.com/DER
Here in Chilean Patagonia, we planned to spend the afternoon exploring Garibaldi Fjord, but icebergs floating by our ship in the morning hours indicated that one of the fjord's tidewater glaciers was especially active. So we decided to get an early start, cruising through the brash ice before coming face-to-face with the Garibaldi Glacier, where we observed several wonderful calving episodes before boarding Zodiacs to inspect the nooks and crannies of the fjord.

SOUTH COAST OF DEVON ISLAND
To discover more daily expedition reports, go to expeditions.com/DER
We are on the southern end of Devon Island in a place called Croker Bay, and we’re heading out on Zodiacs because we saw some narwhals as we were coming in. To get down at water level with them, to hear them breathe, to actually put a face to this myth that some people speak of—these unicorns of the sea—is truly remarkable. It just doesn’t get any better.
