Exploring Japan by Sea
From elegant shrines to stunning, remote dive sites, Japan’s special places are spread across nearly 7,000 islands. Easily reaching distant locations and experiencing remarkable off-the-beaten-path places without worrying about logistics or language challenges are just a few of the reasons why it’s best to explore Japan by ship. 4
EFFORTLESSLY VISIT WIDE-RANGING LOCATIONS AND REMOTE DESTINATIONS Traveling by ship enables us to cover much more ground than by land alone—from bustling cities, iconic shrines, and peaceful gardens to ancient forests and secluded beaches. Traveling by ship also gives us direct access to less-visited locations not well connected to public transportation like the enchanting rainforest on Yakushima Island. Each new itinerary also includes the bonus of experiencing the outstanding sights of a neighboring country—either South Korea or Taiwan—which is also made easily possible by expedition ship. EXPLORE A COLORFUL UNDERSEA WORLD Japan’s natural wonders include a thriving undersea world. The Kerama Islands reef burst with 250 kinds of coral; three species of sea turtles frequent the 100 shallow reefs of Miyako Island, and the Yaeyama Islands are known for manta rays. Dive, snorkel, or explore by kayak: our expedition ships carry all the necessary equipment and expert guides lead the way to incredible marine experiences. LEAVE LOGISTICS TO EXPERIENCED GUIDES Exploring Japan can present language and logistical challenges but there are no worries when traveling with our knowledgeable and experienced expedition teams. Our time to explore is optimized and we are free to relax and become fully immersed in the history, culture, and natural beauty of the truly timeless Land of the Rising Sun.

National Geographic Resolution
The Perfect Platform for Exploring Japan Christened in November 2021, National Geographic Resolution is a state-of-the art expedition ship perfect for exploring Japan. Carrying just 126 guests, she is small yet powerful. The same strength that empowers her to trailblaze through polar ice also enables her to reach destinations faster. This means more time in each compelling locale and less time in transit.
6
More than 10,000 square feet of glass on six guest decks connect us to the spectacular scenery. Observe fishing boats casting nets, the terraced rice fields of Shodoshima, and Miyajima’s “floating” torii gate.
Elegantly imagined and quietly luxe, her Scandinavian-inflected design and décor provide comfort and a sense of limitless space. Wellness offerings include a glassenclosed Yoga Studio, saunas, Fitness Studio, and massage treatments in the Sanctuary; and infinity hot tubs and glass igloos on Deck 8. Enjoy inventive, regionally-inspired cuisine with wraparound views at Restaurant 270° or the more intimate Tupaia’s, which has both indoor and outdoor seating. Sustainable choices are offered, and seating is always unassigned. There are numerous opportunities to sample local specialties both in the regions we visit and on the ship, but Western cuisine options are always available.
