Dear Traveller, In July 1967 my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad, brought the first organised expedition for laymen to the Galápagos. In his book, Passport to Anywhere, published in 1983, he wrote about that expedition, and I thought you might enjoy this amusing excerpt about a volcano on Fernandina Island. “On one visit we stood on the deck of the Navarino and one of the lady passengers asked me, ‘Is the volcano dead?’ ‘No,’ I replied, ‘it’s merely dormant.’ ‘You seem to be able to arrange anything, Mr. Lindblad. Why can’t you arrange for a small eruption?’ ‘Well,’ I said, ‘let me think about that. I’ll try to arrange it.’ I had almost forgotten about my little joke when we suddenly heard a loud hiss followed by a tremendous explosion. Fire and smoke rose in the sky from a rupture on our side of the volcano. It looked at first like blood spurting from a severed artery. The lady turned to me in awe. ‘How did you ever arrange that?’ she asked. Completely startled myself at the coincidence, I said ‘You remember Moses and the Red Sea?’ ” And just this past May 25, another eruption took place: Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island erupted after 33 years of being dormant. We diverted the National Geographic Endeavour to have a close look, much to the enjoyment of our guests. I cannot, of course, ensure an eruption for you. However, what I can assure you without reservation is that each week something new and unique seems to happen in this most remarkable geography. National Geographic photographer and naturalist Jeff Mauritzen travelled to Africa, South America, and the Pacific photographing wildlife for the Society’s Animal Encyclopedia. A seasoned and popular photography expert, he is a guide and lecturer on natural history-focused expeditions. Whether capturing panoramas of African savanna wildlife, or sharks in the Pacific depths, Jeff’s work expresses unwavering passion and respect for the natural world. He’s lived in Venezuela and Ireland, as well as at sea aboard seven different ships. Jeff’s photography appears in National Geographic books and numerous other publications, as well as on the Society’s website.

Macduff Everton is a contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler, where he has photographed more than 20 stories from Paris to Beijing to Big Sur. Other editorial clients include Condé Nast Traveler, Life, LA Times Magazine, NY Times Magazine, Outside, and Smithsonian. His work is in the collections of many institutions, including the Bibliothèque Nationale, the British Museum, the International Centre of Photography, the Museo de Arte Moderno, and MoMA. PAULA TAGLE

Expedition leader & naturalist Paula grew up in the city of Guayaquil. After completing her degree in geology, she worked in different parts of Ecuador, including Galápagos. After completing her master’s in quaternary geology in Belgium, she discovered she was more interested in volcanoes than in raw materials. So, she eagerly returned to Galápagos, a mecca for geologists. Bewitched by the other wonders of the islands, Paula delights in interpreting and creating an in-depth experience for our guests.

CARLOS ROMERO

Expedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructor Raised amid the biodiversity of Venezuela and Ecuador, Carlos was fascinated by tropical ecology at an early age. He holds a doctorate in biology and a master’s in ecotourism and natural protected areas management, and one of the scientific papers he’s authored led him to Galápagos. Entranced by the unique, fearless fauna of the archipelago, he chose to train as a naturalist. He has dedicated his life to the islands ever since, and generously shares his knowledge and insight with guests.

AURA BANDA CRUZ

Naturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialist Aura’s grandparents were among the earliest settlers in the Galápagos in the 1930s—her mother was born on Floreana Island, one of twelve siblings intricately involved in the conservation of the islands. Aura’s childhood was spent among the finches and swimming with sea lions. After completing studies in Quito, Aura returned and has spent the past ten years sharing Galápagos and photography with guests.

JONATHAN AGUAS

Naturalist & certified photo instructor Jonathan’s family dates back five generations on San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos. He first left the islands on a scholarship to finish his bachelor’s degree in integrative biology in the U.S., and returned to his beloved Galápagos to teach—choosing to work as a naturalist was a natural progression. His science background and keen eye for beauty led him to photography and to helping guests capture their Galápagos experience.

JUAN CARLOS AVILA

Expedition leader, naturalist & certified photo instructor Juan Carlos spent his early years in the natural exuberance of the Cotopaxi region of Ecuador. At the age of twelve, his family moved to Santa Cruz, Galápagos. His knowledge of the natural history of the islands is bone deep. Currently completing his education degree, he is an advocate for the importance of the archipelago and its conservation. In his role as a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor, he helps guests “see” the islands in every sense.

JASON HEILMANN

Naturalist, certified photo instructor & undersea specialist Jason grew up in the lush Pacific Northwest. While attending university there, he met an Ecuadorian woman. Following her home, he found himself in the Galápagos Islands, one of the most revered natural environments on Earth, and his niche as a professional scuba diver and dive assistant on scientific projects. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE Our relationships in Galápagos run deep. They began when Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first-ever civilian expedition here in 1967, and then stepped forward to pay the salaries of the islands’ first two conservation officials in 1968. Since 1997, together with our guests, we’ve raised $6.7 million to support important conservation, education, research, and community development projects in Galápagos, creating the LEX-NG Fund to manage donations. Since the LEX-NG Fund carries the operating costs, 100% of all donations made by guests are put toward the highest conservation priorities—determined by the Fund’s Board, with leaders from the National Park and Charles Darwin Research Station. Foundations including the Helmsley Charitable Trust have joined these efforts, providing significant grants to tackle the biggest challenges facing the archipelago. Here are some examples of the projects we support— through donations, and active, hands-on help.

MANGROVE FINCHES ON BOARD! One of the world’s rarest birds, the mangrove finch, a rare Darwin finch, has dwindled to a habitat the size of just 24 football fields. This February, National Geographic Endeavour transported seven mangrove finch eggs from Isabela to Puerto Ayora, where the Research Station is located. As expedition leader Paula Tagle explained, “We had 10% of the world’s entire mangrove finch population aboard our ship.” We continually seek ways to allow our guests to witness conservation in action. A+ IN GALÁPAGOS STUDIES The Tomas de Berlanga School, in the Santa Cruz highlands, is a private, open-air school that immerses its students in nature. Its curriculum seeks to cultivate the next generation of leaders for Galápagos through critical thinking, bilingualism, high academic standards, and experiential learning. TRASH INTO TREASURE The LEX-NG Artisan Fund is addressing two simultaneous problems: artisans’ need for materials, and Galápagos’ challenges in dealing with waste. The Glass Adaptive Reuse project trains artisans and students in the use of glass machinery and tools for carving, etching, and sanding, and provides them with inexpensive and readily available materials for their work. Three years after the program’s inception, 40% of the galleries and shops in Santa Cruz offer recycled glass objects. Restaurants and hotels are using recycled glass for tableware. Artisans trained in the program have won conservation in art awards regionally and nationally. And two of the artisans have been so successful, they’re building their own glass studios to employ others to expand their recycled offerings.

DAYS 3–8: EXPLORING THE GALÁPAGOS Listed below is a sample of the islands we may visit during our expedition.* (B,L,D Daily) ISLA BARTOLOMÉ Walk to the top of Bartolomé’s volcanic cone for a stunning view of Pinnacle Rock and the surrounding golden sand beaches. After the hike, immerse yourself among schools of multicoloured reef fish. You may also have the opportunity to swim with Galápagos penguins.

ISLA SANTIAGO Follow a path along a series of tide pools and underwater caverns in search of Galápagos fur seals, marine iguanas, sea lions, shore birds and Sally Lightfoot crabs. ISLA SANTA CRUZ Santa Cruz is home to the Charles Darwin Research station; learn about the science done here and visit the neighbouring captive breeding program for endangered species of Galápagos giant tortoises, by their partners in conservation, the Galápagos National Park Service. Later, travel into the highlands where wild tortoises forage to observe and photograph them in the wild. ISLA ISABELA Explore the largest island in the group, home to enormous marine iguanas, abundant sea turtles, the only species of flightless cormorant in the world, and the only penguin species that inhabits the equator. Cruise by Zodiac and hike against the backdrop of giant shield volcanoes, and snorkel in the cool, rich waters that often draw whales and dolphins to the area. ISLA FLOREANA At Champion Islet, snorkel among sea lions, or peer into an underwater world in a glassbottom boat while keeping an eye out for the endangered Floreana mockingbird. Those interested can visit Post Office Bay, founded by whalers in the 18th century—if you see a letter addressed to someone who lives near you, the tradition is to deliver it by hand.

ISLA FERNANDINA Discover the marine iguana haven of Punta Espinoza as we hike over lava flows. Galápagos hawks, sea lion nurseries and the rare Galápagos flightless cormorant will be found as we explore this island. ISLA ESPAÑOLA See swallow-tailed gulls, Española mockingbirds, boobies, and, seasonally, waved albatross on this birder’s paradise. Walk among vivid green and red marine iguanas and unique lava lizards, and observe sea lions up close on a pristine white-sand beach. Overnight at the Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel. (B,L) DAY 10: LIMA/CUSCO/SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCA This morning fly from Lima to Cusco and drive to Awanacancha where llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos are bred. Enjoy an afternoon lecture by Peter Frost. Check into the Sol y Luna Hotel. (B,L,D) DAY 11: SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCA Visit the massive Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo. Then attend a traditional weaving demonstration by National Geographic grantee Nilda Callañaupa. Enjoy an outdoor lunch with a Paso horse demonstration. Visit a local pottery studio, featuring ceramics made with ancient Peruvian techniques and designs. After dinner, enjoy a folkloric dance performance. lodge’s grounds are home to a great variety of the religion’s colourful flowers and birds. (B,L,D) DAY 13: MACHU PICCHU/CUSCO Early morning, hike to the Sun Gate, the ancient final checkpoint to Machu Picchu, and watch daybreak over the sacred ruins. The morning is free to explore. After a train and bus ride we arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon for two nights at the Belmond Monasterio Hotel (formerly the OrientExpress Monasterio Hotel). (B,L,D) DAY 14: CUSCO Explore the Inca Empire’s capital city of Cusco and visit the vast Sacsayhuamán Fortress. The afternoon is open to stroll around the city. Overnight at the conveniently located Wyndham Costa del Sol Lima Airport Hotel. (B,L) DAY 10: LIMA/IQUITOS/NAUTA Enjoy a morning tour of Lima, then fly to Iquitos and continue overland to the riverside village of Nauta, where the Delfin II awaits. Settle into your cabin, and gather for a welcome dinner of fine Peruvian cuisine on board. Tonight, step out on deck to gaze at the magnificent Amazon night sky. (B,L,D)

DAYS 11-18: PACAYA-SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE Spend this week exploring the PacayaSamiria National Reserve, a pristine swathe of jungle—one of the largest in South

America—stretching more than five million acres, and harbouring some of the Amazon’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Bordered by the Marañón and the Ucayali, two powerful rivers that converge to create the famed Amazon, the reserve floods annually with nutrient-rich waters and is known locally as the Mirrored Forest for the reflections created by the glassy water. Set out into this remarkable wilderness on daily excursions by skiff, kayak, and, when the water level permits, hikes on terra firma. Skim past giant lily pads afloat on black-water lakes, and venture deep into the rain forest on narrow tributaries. Spot sloths and monkeys, including variably coloured saddleback tamarins, noisy and shaggy-tailed monk saki monkeys. Watch for an astounding variety of birds, from tanagers and hummingbirds to parrots and endangered scarlet macaws. In the river, look for massive paiche fish, the Amazon’s largest; rare pink dolphins; and the infamous piranhas. Enjoy an opportunity to swim in a lake in the reserve’s interior. Seek out Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily that grows in small lagoons. Go on a bird-watching hike, listening for the vocal oropendola and then looking for its telltale yellow tail. Watch the sun set and listen to a cacophonous symphony of nocturnal animals calling out across the treetops. Slip through the forest in a skiff as night falls, using a spotlight to find caimans, frogs, fishing bats and other creatures of the night.

Pay a visit to one of the communities on the reserve’s edge and get to know the ribereños, those who live on the riverbanks, and their age-old traditions. Meet local women and children, and watch them make jewelry and other handicrafts. Learn how local subsistence farmers cultivate wild plants and trees to earn income. Hear about how the local residents find edible fruits and indigenous plants with medicinal properties hidden in the jungle. RESERVATION INFORMATION Cost Includes: All accommodations aboard ships or in hotels per itinerary or similar, all meals and nonalcoholic beverages aboard ship, meals on land as indicated, air transportation where indicated as included, shore excursions, sightseeing and entrance fees, special access permits, transfers to and from group flights, use of snorkelling equipment and wet suits, use of kayaks, tips (except to ship’s crew), taxes and service charges, services of a ship physician and services of our expedition staff. Combined Itineraries Costs Include: Hotel nights as described; sightseeing; porterage; services of local guides and tour leaders. Gratuities to ship’s crew are at your discretion. Airfare: For all programs, airfare is an additional cost unless otherwise noted. TERMS & CONDITIONS Reservations: To reserve your place, an advance payment is required at the time of reservation. The advance payment amount varies by program. your voyage. Managing your documents online will facilitate fast and accurate communication, and allow you to provide us with pertinent details we require, in order to complete your reservation. Your online account gives you access to your Expedition Guide, which includes valuable information specific to your voyage. You can also use your online account to make easy payments, view recommended flights and reading material, packing list, and so much more. Final Payment: Due no later than 90 days prior to departures. Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend that you take advantage of a Travel Insurance policy. This plan offers comprehensive coverage to protect you from cancellation fees, costs incurred due to trip delays/interruption, damaged or lost baggage, medical assistance and evacuation during your travels. Travel Insurance premiums are non-refundable once plan is purchased. Smoking Policy: Allowed only in designated outdoor areas.
