COLUMBIA & SNAKE RIVERS JOURNEY
THE POWERFUL COLUMBIA AND SNAKE RIVERS FLOW
through some of the world’s most geologically fascinating landscapes, carved over time by tumultuous floods and volcanic eruptions. Get an up-close look at towering canyons, massive waterfalls, ancient petroglyphs, and rocky shorelines where bighorn sheep roam free. Along the way you’ll also travel through a series of eight locks, visit intriguing museums, and savor this fertile region’s abundant bounty—from salmon fished right out of these waterways to award-winning wines and craft brews. Overlying it all: the intrepid spirit of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. As you travel in their wake, your historian will weave tales of this dramatic episode in American history.
TWO GREAT RIVERS & A REGION’S BEST SEASONS
FALL’S BOUNTY. Harvest time along the Columbia and Snake Rivers bursts with
flavors—and in our own dining room as we provision the ship from local markets and wineries. Photo ops abound with dark green hillsides interrupted by reds, golds, and greens as the leaves change.
SPRING FORWARD. Clouds of blossoms in
the orchards, vines straining to the sun— the spring bloom in this region is extraordinary. Enjoy the effervescence up close—whether on a visit to a local vineyard for lunch and a tasting, an optional whitewater rafting trip down the White Salmon River, or in the river-flanking vistas.
ON THE TRAIL OF LEWIS & CLARK. The fascinating legacy of the Lewis and Clark expedition permeates this region. We’ll see Beacon Rock, where they knew they were approaching the Pacific; the spot where they portaged Celilo Falls; and Hat Rock, one of the distinctive
landmarks passed by the Corps of Discovery on its journey down the Columbia.
EXPERIENCE MORE. Discover Portland and the Willamette
Valley as optional pre- or post-voyage experiences. In Portland, explore highlights of this quirky and picturesque city. Just outside the city, enjoy tastings at three awardwinning wineries in Willamette Valley. Or try award-winning vintages on a brand-new history and culinary three-day extension in Lewiston. On spring departures choose to spend a day whitewater rafting. See pages 26-27.
