From the magnificent mountains of Patagonia’s national parks to the emerald forests of the Amazon delta, South America stuns with its trove of natural wonders. Aboard our small and nimble expedition ships, travel to the continent’s wild isles and untrammeled coasts, where roads are scarce and nature reigns.
Experience Immersive and with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic
Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first international tourist expedition to Patagonia in 1967, and for more than 50 years, Lindblad Expeditions has been bringing travelers deep into the region’s labyrinth of fjord lands to seek out wonders that can only be reached by small ship. Today, we take our South American voyages even further, sailing the coastline from tip to tail in search of pristine equatorial jungles and the continent’s most remote islands.
World-Class Expedition Ships
A trio of small, stylish, and comfortable worldclass expedition ships play host to our voyages along the South American coastline. Our 81-cabin National Geographic Explorer is equally at home in Patagonia’s open waters as she is on the Amazon’s sinuous tributaries. Our new, state-of-the-art sister ships National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution each feature 71 cabins, sleek Scandinavian design, and luxurious amenities such as infinity hot tubs and twin saunas.
Each vessel is stocked with a fleet of Zodiacs that allow us to explore without being dependent on ports or piers, while kayaks and paddleboards let you paddle deep into glacier-carved fjords and tropical coves. When we’re not out exploring, open decks and large windows keep us connected to extraordinary views of sapphire seas teeming with fur seals or jungle-fringed shores aflutter with macaws and toucans.
Authentic Exploration
Travel With A Veteran Team
Every member of our team—from our naturalists, photographers, and expedition leaders to our crew working behind the scenes—is committed to ensuring our guests have an unforgettable experience. Many are veteran guides who come from the remote places we explore and have worked with us for decades, chosen for their extensive knowledge of subjects like geology, wildlife biology, and history. They, along with the thoughtfully selected guest speakers who join us onboard, give rich context to South America’s landscapes and cultures.
Active Exploration Every Day
Our itineraries feature a range of activities designed to immerse you in these spectacular environments. Whether you choose to ride horseback across the Patagonian pampas, kayak in aquamarine lakes studded with icebergs, or go on a flightseeing excursion over the Guyanese jungle to the world’s largest single-drop waterfall, you will be able to explore your way, every day. Our state-of-the-art tools and knowledgeable guides will help you make the most out of each excursion, so that when you encounter something that sparks your curiosity, you can explore it from every angle.
ALL IN: Activities and excursions are always included in the voyage price
Uncommon Discoveries and Special Access in Patagonia and Beyond
Our voyages along South American shores are expertly curated to include unique experiences that allow you to uncover the hidden side of your destination. During our long history of responsibly exploring these wild regions, we have been granted special access to restricted places, like the wildlife reserves of Karukinka Natural Park and the mountain-backed shores of Argentina’s Staten Island.
Fernando de Noronha
We spend three days exploring the marine-rich waters of this Brazilian archipelago, recognized by UNESCO for its sea life and tropical birds. The star attraction is the large resident pod of spinner dolphins, known to leap and twirl above the water’s surface in a dazzling display of acrobatics.
Torres del Paine National Park
This stunning park’s iconic mountain range—with razor-sharp peaks resembling great granite horns—presides over the Patagonian pampas, home to solitary pumas and herds of guanaco. Discover gem-colored lagoons, glistening glaciers, and lush lenga forests in this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Karukinka Natural Park
With special permission from the Wildlife Conservation Society, Lindblad Expeditions has access to Karukinka Natural Park, a private reserve of wind-bent forests and wetlands harboring more than 90 animal species, including Chile’s largest populations of guanaco, culpeo foxes, and Andean condors.
Argentina’s Staten Island
Cape Horn
At the southern tip of South America, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, Cape Horn marks the northern end of the infamous Drake Passage, where mariners have braved cross currents for centuries. In the rare event that conditions are conducive to landing, you will achieve an explorer’s milestone.
Off limits for nearly a century, this island is seldom seen by tourists. Lindblad Expeditions paved the way for sustainable tourism here: National Geographic Explorer was the first foreign-flagged vessel given access. Magellanic penguins and fur seals are among the wildlife that thrives in this untouched nature reserve.
The Chilean Fjords
Patagonia’s ice-carved coast is lined with spectacular fjords, locally called senos . Venture deep into this extensive maze of channels, dotted with tiny islands and framed by subpolar forests. The massive glacier Pio IX extends for nearly 41 miles here, and is one of the few advancing glaciers in the world.
Premier Accommodations on Land & Sea
National Geographic Endurance & National Geographic Resolution
National Geographic Endurance and her sister ship, National Geographic Resolution, are truly in a class of their own. Purpose-built with our 50+ years of experience, these state-ofthe-art, top-tier ice class vessels get you closer to the world’s most remote places for the ultimate adventure experience— delivered in supreme comfort and stability.
National Geographic Explorer
With a storied history working in Norway’s famed Coastal Express, the flagship National Geographic Explorer was completely rebuilt to deliver the finest in polar exploration for Lindblad Expeditions. With an ice-strengthened hull, a dynamic suite of exploration tools, and a well-appointed interior, this extraordinary ship is devoted to exploration— every detail revealing our dedication to curiosity and wonder.
World-Class Lodges
On our Best of Chilean Patagonia: From Torres del Paine to Cape Horn expedition, we travel by both land and sea, settling into world-class lodges during our time spent ashore in Torres del Paine National Park.
TIERRA PATAGONIA HOTEL & SPA
Looking out over the soaring Torres del Paine, Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa is a celebration of its surroundings and a shining model of sustainable tourism. The lodge’s innovative architecture incorporates natural materials and design elements of traditional Chilean estancias, while locally sourced cuisine and a world-class spa invite you to experience Patagonia with all your senses.
EXPLORA PATAGONIA HOTEL SALTO CHICO
The five-star Hotel Salto Chico crowns an eponymous waterfall in one of the most picturesque parts of Torres del Paine National Park, where the massive Paine Massif rises into a mesmerizing backdrop. The warm, wood-paneled lodge is connected by catwalk to a spa with a heated pool and open-air jacuzzis—all overlooking the glacially fed powder-blue waters of the Paine River.
Patagonia A Photographer’s Paradise
On a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic voyage, photography is never an afterthought—it’s central to the expedition experience. Every departure along the South American coast is accompanied by a National Geographic Photography Experts and a certified photo instructor (CPI) who help guests capture incredible images of their travels. National Geographic Photography Experts Kike Calvo and Krista Rossow will join upcoming expeditions in Patagonia, a region they are both deeply connected to.
“I was enamored with Patagonia even before landing in Ushuaia for the first time. Flying over the Andes with a bird’s-eye view of snow-capped peaks and icefields made me realize that I needed to experience that beauty from the ground.
Karukinka National Park is a picture-perfect landscape, with sparkling blue water and rolling green forests. As a self-described ice addict, I’m especially drawn to the park’s glaciers, where ice worn by the passage of time creates nature’s own sculpture gallery.
In Torres del Paine National Park, the light never seemed to hit the peaks of the iconic massif the same way twice. The light in Patagonia is constantly changing because wind drives cloud formations across the wide-open skies.
One morning while I was photographing Salto Chico waterfall, using a tripod and a slow shutter speed to blur the movement in the water, the mountains in the background began to glow pink and purple. The beauty of those mountains has brought me to tears more than once.”
Photographer and educator Krista Rossow has shot feature stories as a contributing photographer for National Geographic Traveler magazine in South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, and beyond. Krista will join the March 8, 2023 departure of Patagonia: Chilean Fjords and Argentina’s Staten Island
“It’s hard to find places that stick in your mind before you visit them. Staten Island, at the southern tip of South America, is one of those places for me. After being declared a nature reserve for seals in 1923, it was off limits to visitors. Following almost 95 years without any tourism to the island, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic landed there in 2015, and I was fortunate to be onboard for the inaugural voyage.
I have lively memories of the ever-green beech in Hoppner Bay, the intricate designs of leathery kelps, and the twisted tree barks in Puerto Cook. It was a constant symphony of colors, shapes, and textures for the eyes. A land teeming with life. A land that had been forgotten by time.
When I returned—after taking thousands of images— I spent long nights choosing photographs to compile a series that reflected my emotions, and impressions from my visit there. It’s such a wonderful gift to be able to share this once-hidden place with others—on the page and in person.”
Award-winning photographer and writer Kike Calvo published his images and memories from the National Geographic Explorer’s historic Staten Island voyage in his book, Staten Island: Isla de los Estados. Kike Calvo will join the October 30, 2023 and March 8, 2024 departures of Patagonia: Chilean Fjords and Argentina’s Staten Island.
TEST & LEARN: Borrow high-tech equipment from the ship’s OM System Photo Gear Locker.Seek Out Patagonia’s Big Five
At the ends of the Earth, amid Patagonia’s dramatic landscapes, wildlife-lovers will find a menagerie of rare and unique animals that have adapted to their extreme surroundings. Of the more than 60 mammals, 400 birds, and 50 reptiles that have been recorded here, the species earning headliner honors as Patagonia’s ‘big five’ show up on nearly every visitor’s viewing list. Meet these charismatic creatures, then join us on expedition to seek them out in the wild.
Magellanic Penguin
Penguins outnumber people in the southern reaches of South America, and are especially common on coastal islands, such as Isla Magdalena. These dapper birds—decked out in the classic penguin tuxedo, complete with a bow-tie band—nest in burrows and are often spotted standing guard outside their tunnels.
Darwin’s Rhea
A cousin to the ostrich and the emu, this large flightless bird struts across the scrublands, sporting feathers that make it tough to spot despite its size. Shaggy gray and brown plumage blends in perfectly with the vegetation, and when the rhea lowers its head to feed, it could pass for a small bush on the pampas.
Andean Condor
When factoring in weight and wingspan, Andean condors measure in as the world’s largest flying birds, and can soar for more than 100 miles without flapping their wings. Their overall numbers are in decline; however, populations remain strong in Patagonia, where it’s possible to see a dozen or more of these scavengers circling together.
Guanaco
The guanaco—along with its llama and alpaca cousins—belongs to the same family as camels, a resemblance you can spot in their long necks and split upper lips. Traveling in large herds on the open Patagonian pampas, guanacos are surprisingly fast, an attribute needed to escape pursuing pumas.
Puma
Torres del Paine National Park is home to a healthy puma population, in part due to strict protections imposed by the Chilean government. Ranking among the largest species of wild cat in the Americas, pumas are powerful hunters— and typically well fed in Patagonia, thanks to the large herds of guanacos in the region.
