One year ago – in March of 2018 – we published the first issue of the Lindenhurst Kiwanian. An article in that issue shared the history of the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst and explained that until 1987 – in accordance with the Kiwanis International bylaws – membership was limited to men. Happily, On July 7, 1987, facing rebellious clubs and federal lawsuits, delegates to the International convention in Washington, DC voted to allow women into the ranks of membership.

Lindenhurst Kiwanis President Ralph Somma, VP Jo-Ann Boettcher and Director Garry Biggs congratulate Wheelbarrow of Cheer winner Lt. Gov Janice Bar,

On Thursday, March 14th the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst held its annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner and raffle. The money raised by this event is used to fund our high school senior scholarship program and to send needy children to Kamp Kiwanis for a week of summer fun and adventure. Our club will be offering scholarships of $2,000 over four years to

five deserving Lindenhurst students this year and hopes to send at least 6 children to Kamp Kiwanis.

Patrick’s division in Babylon performed traditional Irish step dancing. Our overflowing wheelbarrow of cheer was won by Suffolk West Lt. Governor E. Janice Bar. We think we know which club in the division will be Janice’s favorite moving forward!

Research shows that the informal learning that takes place during the first five years of life is among the most critical in setting a strong foundation for later success in school. The Lindenhurst Memorial Library has a special program called 1,000 Books before Kindergarten (1KBK) that celebrates reading together.

Whether you are entertaining grandchildren for a weekend, a parent looking for a next bedtime story, or an independent reader needing a suggestion, meet with one of our youth librarians for a great book. Did you know the Library also has children’s audio books and

e-books available for digital checkout? Check our website at www.lindenhurstlibrary.org under Downloads. Helping children succeed in life is a goal shared by the Library and the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst. Both aim to improve the world, one community and one child at a time.

Kiwanis Food Drive a Huge Success By: Alice Cromarty

On Saturday, March 2, Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club and St. John’s Lutheran Church combined forces at Stop & Shop to stock the St. John’s Food Pantry to combat the hunger crisis in our community. The statistics are staggering -- 216,000 Long Islanders are hungry; 90,000 are children!

Special thanks to our friends from the Deer Park/North Babylon Kiwanis Club who came to support us and the Deer Park Presbyterian Church for their contribution which was delivered by the Lindenhurst Kiwanis club’s newest member, Ricky Weidenburner.

A dozen Kiwanians, two Key Club members and Pantry director Bob Stein braved the cold to collect over 10 shopping carts full of food items.

What struck us most was the generosity of our neighbors who came to the supermarket to purchase one or two items and donated a full bag of gro-

ceries to our effort. Thank you! Another food drive is planned for April 27th. Please follow us on Facebook or our website www.LindenhurstKiwanis.org for details.
