Street Photography First coined by Magnum co-founder and street photographer Heri Cartier-Bresson, the Decisive Moment refers to the capturing of a spontaneous moment in time, just a second, one that never again will be repeated (petpixel.com. 2016). Street photography is about taking the mundane and every day and turning it into something beautiful; something that makes you think and wonder and something that will make you feel (erickimphotography.com. 2016).

Many of these images were taken on New Year’s Day 2016 at Kings Beach, Port Elizabeth. I spent my first day of 2016 immersed in South Africa’s cultural diversity; amongst old, young, black, white and all people from different walks of life. Children running, exploring and playing together while the older children enjoyed the rides at the fun fair with men lighting and cooking meat and mielies on open fires while the women buttered rolls and dished up side salads. I was witness to children making skatebaords out of emptly 2L Coke bottles, swimming in water fountains and visiting the beach for the very first time; the excitement, fun and the sense of awe and wonder from these children, is something that I will remember forever.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

– Elliott Erwitt

“There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative - Henri Cartier-Bresson

“I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.”

– Bruce Gilden
