A Walk In the Park Freshmen, First Semester: Final Project The idea of this project was to design a park like space on an empty grassland on campus. We first started off with visiting the site and sketching it. As well as taking measurements and seeing where the typography lines were. Then, we created a scaled site model and a study model of our design. The requirements for this project was to only use the land, we weren’t allowed to use man made structures, besidesa structure that would help provide shade. This space was intended for students to relax and have a moment for themselves, as well as for concerts or gatherings.

Translation Exercise Freshmen, Second Semester: This project challenged me to use the visual spectrum using color and texture to convey an intangible emotive concept. Using a trigger word I had chosen to create a series of spaces that lead up to and communicated the emotive meaning. The first design challenge was to produce ‘five-cells’ of graduated progression intensity in a series. In which, the viewer should ‘feel’ the progressive nature and intent of the solution. The second design challenge was to use the same trigger word and design a building with spaces that had the same effect as the first design challenge. My trigger word was anxiety.

Derive Freshmen, Second Semester Methods Assignment: Photomontage The idea of this assignment was to “drift” through our city by using an app our professor had created called Derive, which gave us a direction to go and a specific object to take a picture of in the area we ended up. Once we had all of the photos we then created a photomontage of three of our images over lapped on top of each other. This had helped me see things in a different perspective and in detail.

Gemini Obelisk Freshmen, Second Semester:

For this project we had to work with a partner and create a basic rule set for our Obelisk piece. The rule set had to include repetition, pattern, or rhythm. The Obelisk also had to pull apart and show movement when the pieces interconnected. Another requirement was one piece had to be made out of wood and the other made out of concrete. To conclude, the rule set we chose was rhythm.

The Process

Esmerelda, the city of water, my solution represents the essence of Esmerelda and the people living within. From the underground passageways to the swallows flying above each rooftop, you can see that this city isn’t just a customary city you would normally come across through any sort of travel. As I read about the city of Esmerelda, I thought about the different schemes that would help represent this city in the best way. In the process of thinking through solutions, I came up with the idea of making a collage out of magazine clippings. I felt like this would be the best way to represent Esmerelda because of how unique and puzzling the city felt as I read about it. This idea of putting Esmerelda together like a puzzle was exactly how I felt the city was like.

“This is not a pipe” Freshmen, Second Semester: For this project we started off with learning about the painting “The Treachery of Images” by Rene Margritte, he had said “This is not a pipe” on his painting meaning that this was only his interpretation of the pipe not the actual pipe itself. With this being said, we were given a city along with a short story of the city, in which we were challenged to create an image that best conveyed our interpretation of that city. These cities were rich in emotion, semiology, and metaphor, each unique in its physical and implied purpose. The city I was given was called Esmerelda.

Design Inspiration

Cloud House Freshmen, Second Semester Final: The intent of this project was to find inspiration for the design of our house. We started off with creating a cloud with a wire mesh material. With that, we created some hybrid sketches, adding rooms, doors, and walls to the cloud. The process of this design was fascinating and helped broaden the ideas for the design of the house.

Bug life

Sophomore, First Semester:

For this project everyone was given a bug, we had to do research about our bug and draw many sketches of it too. Learning about its life cycle and the habitat in which it lives, we then had to create and design a home for one or many of its kind. Since my bug was the Hangingfly, I had designed its habitat to be like leaves since these flies liked to hang on the underside of them. I also created a bowl like shape at the end for water to fill it up when it rains because of the moist environment they like to live in. Creating a habitat for a specific bug was interesting and reminded me that when we design we design for a specific reason or purpose.

Equine Health Center Sophomore, First Semester Final: The intent of the design was to create and accommodate for horses and people throughout the entire equine health center. Moreover, to guarantee the most excellent use of space and circulation between the two. As for this design in particular, the main aspects I choose are, circulation, natural lighting, shade and wind flow. Which includes having an abundant amount of natural lighting and providing shade within each building and their surroundings. As well as, keeping climate and location in mind, for the stalls and the majority of the entire design wind directs through each space to provide a cool breeze for horses and for people.

Hybrid Drawings

Experiential Framework Sophomore, Second Semester: The intent of this design was to take advantage of a space that wasn’t approachable or existent to anyone walking by. Moreover, to take this unknowable space and transform it into something that brings individuals into and through. With that being said, to simply create a symbolic relationship between the structure and individuals. For the design itself, I created a structural component to be revealed between each geometric climbable wall, which is made out of Corten steal. As for utilizing the natural lighting, I also created a structural aesthetic piece above the main structure to allow many different shapes of shade and light to come through the space. Anyone who is just the perfect distance away could see this structure and be welcomed into the space to either enjoy a climb with friends, a walk through something unfamiliar or to meet up for a chat.

Dallas Urban Garden Center Sophomore, Second Semester Final: The idea of this project was to design an urban garden center in Deep Ellum, Dallas to bring exploration and education through plant life and gardening to the community. In hopes to engage, experience and connect the community with agriculture and nature. As well as a small portion of food production from the gardens. To ensure the health of the community, designing a hydroponic gardening system with biosecurity keeps parasites or etc. away from the plants providing perfectly healthy fresh food being generated within the building. In addition, having classrooms that teach about the plant life cycle and gardening to help grow a visitor’s own garden. En masse, this projects design is to have a solution for a compact center that is for exhibition, education, demonstration and consumption for not only the community but, for visitors all over. In which, showcases a collection of related agriculture technologies and techniques.
