W
hen Johnson Engineering was established in 1946, much of Florida was undisturbed land. For more than 60 years, we have seen a boom in development and tremendous population growth. We have been
assisting private companies, city, county, and state government through these changes and challenges by offering expertise in a broad spectrum of disciplines. Just as Florida has transformed dramatically over the years, so has Johnson Engineering. What started as one man surveying Southwest Florida, has developed into a large cohesive team of professional civil engineers, ecologists, scientists, geologists, surveyors and mappers, certified land planners and landscape architects, located throughout Florida. Our extensive list of well-known roads, shopping centers, schools, hospitals, residential communities, resorts and commercial developments show our experience developing Florida’s communities.

L
and development encompasses a broad spectrum of project types, but each project has unique needs. Our extensive range of experience in all areas of development allows us to develop a specific and common sense
approach to address our client’s vision, goals, and schedule. For decades, we have successfully designed and permitted public and private sector projects. We promote client satisfaction by providing excellent customer service and continually evolving to help guide our clients through today’s design, permitting, and construction challenges. Having five offices from Naples north to Tampa and east to LaBelle, our team members have assisted in obtaining permits from almost every governmental agency in Southwest Florida. We know the requirements, we know the processes, and we know the expectations of the agencies. The combined knowledge and local experience of our team members leads to efficient and effective permitting for projects of any type and size.

O
ur land development team uses a proven approach on every project, whether it is a new residential community, downtown redevelopment site, shopping center, or medical facility. The client explains their
vision, constraints, and time frames. Team members review the project to identify the major challenges, analyze them, and make recommendations on how to solve those challenges, leaning on our past experience and problem-solving abilities. We also collaborate with the architect, contractors, and other consultants to coordinate the plans and specifications, leading to a well-defined final product. Once a project is permitted, we perform a number of construction observation and administration services. Our qualified and experienced field personnel observe how the contractors maintain compliance with the plans and specifications, as well as permits and standards of the governing agencies. They also assist with addressing field challenges. We then perform final inspections, verify punch list items have been completed, and certify the project to the proper agencies.
Planning
I
n the words of renowned planner Jane Jacobs, “The greatest asset a city or neighborhood can have is something different from every other place.” This is the premise we use to plan and design projects for our clients. Our
planners are apprised of the latest in legislative action affecting growth management and development in Florida, and we foster relationships based on decades of local presence in jurisdictions throughout Florida’s west coast. These key ingredients provide our clients value and results from the early stages of goal setting through implementation and development. Whether our task is a community planning effort to revitalize an area, engaging citizens to envision their future, or designing and entitling a new development, our work focuses on how people experience the built and natural environment. This goes back to the fundamental goal…to add value by creating something different from every other place.

Landscape Architecture
O
ur landscape architects strive to creatively accommodate society into the natural and built environment. Utilizing cutting edge design tools to help visualize your project, we imaginatively approach each project
as a unique outdoor space. We carefully mold site experiences that employ the use of plants, pavements and surfaces, lighting and signs, furniture elements, water, earth features, and other natural and creative elements that evoke a sense of place. Our primary reward is seeing our projects positively impact user’s lives well into the future.

Water Resources
L
akes, swamps, and rivers make up a great deal of Florida’s geography, and each year in excess of 50 inches of rain falls on Southwest Florida. Through proper management, this amount of surface water serves as an
invaluable resource to our communities. From drainage to irrigation, conservation to flood control, our team is an established leader in water resources engineering, management, and preservation. The dedicated nature of our water resources team allows us to stay up to date on current issues and advancements related to water management. We provide environmental engineering, encompassing all aspects of ecological services, surface water, groundwater and water quality studies.

s the population of Florida grows, the demand for water will continue to increase, while supplies remain the same. The future of water resources will require foresight and innovation. We recognize there will be a greater
demand for conservation, and are diligently creating proactive approaches to meet such challenges. Through decades of experience in South Florida, the firm is also familiar with the area’s unique natural landscape and its particular needs, treating environmental protection as an integral part of effective water management. Developing and implementing successful water quality monitoring programs are crucial to protecting our valuable resources. From managing water levels and flows, to performing water quality sampling and evaluation, our team has the equipment, understanding, and experience necessary to implement successful programs.

Surveying & Mapping
O
ur surveying and mapping group has a long standing and time honored reputation throughout Southwest Florida. Since 1946, we have provided a wide range of specialized surveying and mapping services to many
public, private, and industrial clients, which has measured and defined the lands throughout Florida. We have an extensive library consisting of more than 60 years of historical land records, early plats, and survey drawings, which provides us with invaluable information, saving both time and money for our clients. Our diversified and experienced team of professionals are knowledgeable of local land development codes, statutes, platting requirements, and the industry standard. We understand that communication, relationships, close coordination, and meticulous project management are essential for a successful project.

T
he surveying and mapping profession is constantly changing due to dramatic improvements in measurement and mapping technology. These improvements have produced significant advantages to our clients’ projects.
We can offer our clients more services with increased productivity and generate a higher-quality deliverable. Our team is at the forefront of these advances in surveying technology, diversifying beyond standard survey and mapping services. Advanced survey-grade global positioning systems (GPS) connected to a statewide network of base stations enables our survey field teams to efficiently collect data and stake out points throughout Florida. We also connect this GPS to hydrographic hardware and software to produce bathymetric surveys of lakes, bays, rivers and the Gulf of Mexico. Subsurface utility engineering (SUE) has been one of our specialty services since 2001. We effectively blend the time-honored traditions of surveying and mapping, with the latest technologies, to meet our clients’ surveying needs.

Transportation
E
ffective transportation facilities are critical to commerce, tourism, economic development, as well as the lifestyle we have grown accustomed to as Floridians. As Florida grows, transportation issues become more
important. Our transportation group understands this and is ready to address the challenges ahead. This group consists of two primary teams; design and construction engineering and inspection (CEI). Our design team focuses on the development aspect of transportation, taking needs and turning them into a plan. For decades, we have designed components of our current roadway network. We have also designed and permitted countless intersection improvements, local streets, and sidewalks. Our design staff is well versed in local and state design procedures and requirements.

per state requirements and familiar with industry standard construction inspection and administration procedures. However, our philosophy and overall approach to CEI differentiates us from our competitors. We believe to be a true benefit to the client, our service needs to extend beyond mere documentation. Our CEI team employs a work ethic and proactive involvement that has proven critical on numerous projects. Working in concert with our other in-house disciplines, the traveling public and the client, our entire transportation group has enjoyed a successful history providing comprehensive transportation services.

Utilities
U
tilities play a fundamental part in our everyday lives, yet we take for granted the vast systems of water, irrigation, and sewer lines that run beneath us, and the engineering it took to provide such consistent service.
Our utilities group is highly motivated and are an energetic group of professionals dedicated to the water and wastewater industry. Our expertise has brought water to fire hydrants, drinking fountains, and swimming pools throughout Florida and provided wastewater systems for entire communities. As the population grows, utilities infrastructure must be engineered with expansion in mind. Having the foresight to anticipate future expansion is a strength our team has, which in turn saves our clients both time and money.
