Bio
My name is Lindsey Martin and I recently graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Interior Design from Utah State University. Throughout my years at USU I have completed three professional internships. The first, with Sagrada Design Studio in SLC, UT. The second, with Event Network in Park City, UT. The third, with Campion Platt Interiors in NYC, NY. At USU, I was a member of the Arts Council overseeing and planning events for the Caine College of the Arts. I am a LEED Green Associate and a former student member of IIDA. Through my education, I have gained experience working in a variety of architecture and design programs. I have a passion for commercial design and architecture, especially pertaining to design that promotes sustainability and wellness in the home, workplace, and community.

CHILDREN’S LIBRARY Located in a forested park in Seattle, Washington, this modern children’s library is full of sensory textures and colors to spark the young learner’s imagination. The open floor plan allows for a variety of areas for children to explore. A lounge and browsing area leads to activity tables and computer lab which then transitions into a large group reading area and individual reading nooks. Inspired by a magnifying

glass, the design blows the microscopic into life size. The reading nooks take on the abstract shapes of cells and the colorful, organic furniture plays with the idea of looking through a microscope. The emphasis on natural light, along with the bold graphics on the back wall, creates a bright, fun environment to explore. It’s a place where children can step in and have an experience while they learn and discover.

PRANA RETAIL Prana is an outdoor company focused on yoga, rock climbing, swimming and travel. Prana’s vision is to inspire healthy, mindful and free spirited living. Their retail store creates an inviting environment for its customers through its clean and natural design aesthetic. With Prana’s core value of giving back in mind, the design is highly focused on sustainability with repurposed wood used throughout the store in the product stands, displays, and plank flooring. Recycled climbing rope
16
is also incorporated in the hanging installations. The store enoucourages customers to not only purchase their products but to get outside and use the gear. To promote this, both a bouldering wall and yoga studio can be found in the space. Employees are also encouraged to go outside and adventure. The goal of the space was to motivate people to enter the store for the experience rather than the product alone.

REFUGEE HOUSING The goal of this collaborative project was to bring affordable, safe, and comfortable housing to refugees living in Salt Lake City, UT. Many refugees that arrive in Utah have been through traumatic experiences before coming to the United States. Once here, it can be hard to adapt to a new lifestyle and language. All of these refugees are put into low income housing, mainly in the South Salt Lake area. The apartments can be small and overpriced for large families who are working minimum wage jobs. In many of these apartments,
24
language barriers have been an issue in communicating with landlords. After researching current refugee housing and interviewing refugee case workers in SLC, we discovered many of the needs that the refugee population in Salt Lake City face. Our solution to this problem starts with the fact that families need clean, affordable housing where they feel they can raise their children safely and comfortably. We explored the idea of creating a safe haven community for these refugees.
25

The community
26
We created a neighborhood that has a library, career center, daycare, community center, health clinic, farmer’s market, gardens, and park to help new refugees feel more grounded. It is a place that will help them integrate into the community and have the opportunity to socialize with locals and become an integral part of Utah.

verro The design and architecture of the 1,000 sq ft home, Verro, was inspired by the abstraction and physical attributes of a feather. Working through the design process, the organic shape transformed into many geometric forms evident in exterior stairs and terraces leading up to the house. These elements cascade up the hill and attach to the main structure giving Verro the illusion of movement. This modern home is tucked into the hills of Garden City, Utah with panoramic views of Bear Lake. The exterior stairs lead to both the home and a dramatic balcony featuring an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. This area allows the residents to be a part of nature while still enjoying the comforts of their home.

The main floor of Verro includes a kitchen and living room in a Mid-century Modern style, seperated by a central staircase. This creates an open floor plan with an easy transition to the second floor. Upstairs, a master bedroom, bath, and private library overlook the lake to the north with floor to ceiling windows.

FLEUR BAKERY A boutique french bakery tucked into a nook of SoHo, Manhattan. Fleur Bakery is a quiet retreat from the hustle of the busy city. A local’s routine, morning stop for a warm, sweet breakfast. The bakery’s specialties of french pastries are displayed, piping hot at the counter. The rugged existing structure of brick and exposed wooden trusses is balanced by the blush palette of the furniture and floral wallpaper. This gives the shop a feminine aesthetic. The exisiting brick is painted white in contrast to the dark statement wall in the back of
50
the bakery. The brass light fixtures set the scene with a golden glow. Plush seating is arranged high and low to create a variety of seating options such as cozy conversation areas for a group or a peaceful nook for one. This caters to a wide range of customers, from quick stop-ins to the regulars. The antique, gilded mirrors create an artpiece on the long wall and along with the black and white portraits, pull in french design elements and set the mood with a nostalgic feel.

nyc Residence The ideal way for a global couple to meet NYC. Their dream apartment is located in One 57 one of New York City’s most luxurios buildings. This modern apartment was designed with the intent of creating a home away from home for the new residents. These young world travelers are seeking a comfortable apartment to showcase their art and sculpture collection. This was done by channeling the Metropolitan Museum of Art into the design. Featured antiques from around the world can be seen throughout the space while still holding onto the modern edge of a skyline apartment.

The living room was designed to be a space to entertain and to enjoy the panoramic view of central park. The large seating area creates a comfortable area for socializing. The variety of rich materials and brass accessories add to the high class design of the room.
B EDROOM
In contrast to the bold colors seen in the rest of the space, the bedroom has a softer palette as requested by the clients. The deep blue found in the rug and luxurious pair of chairs set the tone for the room. Many bespoke and extravagant pieces were used as the clients love an antique or two and want their bedroom to be one of a kind.

student rec center Located in Zurich, Switzerland, the student recreation center’s architectural inspiration came from the Alps that surround it. A student center as well as a gym, the hub creates a place where students can rejuvenate, workout, study or socialize. Inspired by Swiss design, the interiors are clean and crisp with pops of bold color. Lofty views from five floors of cardio, rec, study, and cafe areas overlook panoramic views of the Swiss Alps. An enclosed, glass indoor/outdoor track creates a beautiful architectural element making the building unique to it’s location. Overall, the building is a new interest to campus that will draw people to the university. It’s a comfortable, social and inviting space that promotes student wellness.
