Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin and District (BBBSDD) have reinvented Bowl for the Kids Sake 2011 using Wii consoles and projector screens. They will be creating a virtual bowling alley in the ballroom at the Best Western Inn and Suites in

Orangeville on Friday, March 4th and Sunday, March 6th. Nancy Stallmach, Executive Director of BBBSDD, said that when they heard about the closing of the King Pin bowling alley, “our first concern was that we wouldn’t be able to run Bowl for Kids Sake anymore and we’ve been running it for 32 years in Orangeville. It

raises a third of our operating budget and it’s really allowed us to continue with our programs in Dufferin County.” Ms. Stallmach said BBBSDD doesn’t receive government funding on a regular basis and Bowl for Kids Sake has been a mainstay of their fundraising. have and finding a replacement fundraiser could be difficult for an event that is so established. “We didn’t know how we might be able to find a replacement fundraiser,” she said. Ms. Stallmach says Wii bowling was started by an agency in Alberta to supplement their community Bowl for the Kids Sake in schools where they have their programs. “We’re the very first agency in Canada to do it as our main community bowl,” she said. Once they had decided on Wii bowling to substitute for the real thing the next step was finding a venue to host the event. “Luckily the Best Western was willing to let us use their ballroom for free, which is really great,” she said. “The other challenge was trying to wrap our heads around finding 15 Wii consoles to create the virtual bowling alley and also to find the TV’s. At first we didn’t know how we were going to have enough TV’s to do it, and then we came up with the

idea of using digital projectors.” Ms. Stallmach commented that they were able to find enough Wii’s and are borrowing projectors from various people and agencies to create a 15lane bowling alley. She commented that people in the community have been kind to BBBSDD. “People came up to me when they heard the bowling alley was closed and the first thing they said to me was ‘What are you going to do about Bowl for Kids Sake?’ because it is a well-known event and it’s well known that this is how we raise more of our money,” she said. “Lots of people were very kind about offering to lend us whatever they could to help make it successful.” Ms. Stallmach said 72 teams are currently registered to play. They have fewer teams than last year but there are still spots for more teams signing up before the deadline, February 28. “The national office of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada has figured out that it costs about $1,000

to match a child with a volunteer,” she said. “That’s because every volunteer has to be screened very carefully. We need to have caseworkers who do a police check, home visit.” Each volunteer is also interviewed, does child safety training with them and an orientation. “All of this is to create the most safe matches and the most long-lasting relationships for them and the child,” she said. “That’s where the money goes that we raise from Bowl for Kids Sake.” The theme for this year’s event is Country Western. “We’re encouraging the teams to dress up in country and western outfits and each session the team with the best costumes will get prizes.” According to Ms. Stallmach, for every $100 that is raised in pledges Boston Pizza, as the main sponsor, will give away $20 in gift certificates. She said that in past years they have raised $40 000 at this event. She says 54 children in Dufferin have already

been matched, with roughly 25 still on the waiting list. “The money raised will mean that more children in

Dufferin County will be matched with a caring mentor,” she said. “It actually does change a child’s life.”

Highland releases DVD on its quarry plans By WES KELLER Freelance Reporter

Despite a recent statement by Natural Resources Minister Linda Jeffrey that the proposed Melancthon quarry would not be returned to agriculture, The Highland Companies is mailing a DVD to all township addresses depicting how the excavated and sur-

rounding areas would appear in 40 years. It does not suggest that the mining will have been completed in 40 years, but depicts two of four areas in active use at that time. It does say that the speed of excavation would be determined by market demands. (If a comparison is valid, the smaller Rockfort Quarry in Caledon had been estimat-

ed to have a life span of 80 years.) Highland asserts that it would not follow the more traditional practise of rehabilitating the quarry into a lake, but would return it to its own agricultural uses with progressive rehabilitation. In an accompanying letter, President John Lowndes says the company is “committed to estab-

lishing and operating the proposed Melancthon Quarry in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible way.” The DVD “presents our vision of a quarry that is compatible with surrounding land uses. It outlines a number of measures designed to address such matters as water, rehabilitation of extracted areas, ongoing farming activity,

noise, dust, the natural environment, and transportation.” The water issue has been the most pressing in the minds of residents, along with the possible removal of forest cover. The DVD illustrates continuous pumping of water out of the extractions into “injection wells,” and what appears to be an ambitious forestation program. The narrator says Highland has made a full

study of underground and surface water movement in the area. It appears the area to be licensed all drains into the Pine River. The DVD’s depiction of decades of extraction differs from previously announced plans for the quarry to be developed in 300-acre sections, in that there would now be only four large extraction areas plus one central area for such as the crusher, marshalling yard, loading and

After Orangeville’s only bowling alley closed, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin and District (BBBSDD) were forced to reinvent their annual Bowl for the Kids Sake fundraiser using Wii consoles and projector screens at the Best Western Inn & Suites on March 5 and 6. The numbers have now been tallied, and Nancy Stallmach, Executive Director of BBBSDD, says this year’s virtual bowling event was a success, raising $42,155. She commented that they were able to raise almost as much as last year despite the changes they were forced to make to their fundraiser. “”We were really amazed that we did that well, considering the change,” said Ms. Stallmach. She commented that when she first heard the bowling alley was closing she worried about not being able to hold Bowl For the Kids Sake, or to find a suitable replacement fundraiser. “We’ve been running it for 32 years in Orangeville,” she said. “It raises a third of our operating budget and it’s really allowed us to continue with our programs in Dufferin County.” With the Best Western providing the venue, the virtual bowling alley was a much nicer than the alley used in previous years, Ms. Stallmach commented. She said BBBSDD has received good comments about the venue, adding ‘it was a really fun atmosphere’. “We had some problems with the Wii’s Friday night, one of the lanes
