01 Chicago Boogie-Woogie Chicago Architecture Biennial Krueck + Sexton Architects Chicago, Illinois 2015 Chicago Boogie-Woogie is a re-imagined model of urban ownership and living on five Chicago lots. As part of the Inaugural Chicago Biennial, the project was on exhibit in the BOLD Exhibit at the Chicago Cultural Center. In a fundamental break from the typical development pattern, three buildings are oriented parallel to street and alley, creating interconnected and secure collective courtyard spaces lined with stores and shops. Private living units, affordable due to their range in size, are supported by adjacent areas of collective space in which living, dining, and socializing functions take place.

The final Biennial submission included an axonometric, sections, plan, and model-all fitting withing a 2’x2’ format.

02 Prague Riverfront Redevelopment Czech Technical University Prague, Czech Republic This project was completed during my time studying at Czech Technical University and was my first introduction to urban design. Based in a formerly industrial district of Prague, Holesovice now sees tensions between aging residents and new high-rise construction. Frequent flooding in this area has caused flood walls to be built, entirely separating the river from the neighborhood. New development standards, street typologies, transportation infrastructure, and riverfront design link the old town, the new town, and the river.

03 The Lower Dell ULI Hines Competition Kansas State University, 2014 Nashville, Tennessee In this two week competition, I led a five-person team with landscape architects, a planner, and a real-estate developer to come up with an urban design solution for a neighborhood in Nashville, Tennessee. The Lower Dell responds to the challenges currently facing Sulfur Dell and the Nashville metropolitan area. Flooding, creating profit for landowners, and the poor health of the region can be resolved when considered cooperatively. The Lower Dell is a model neighborhood for Nashville, balancing ecological, urban, and human health. Civic leaders in Nashville will apply the strategies introduced in The Lower Dell to suitable sites throughout the region. This ecological, urban, and human balance is the foundation for a prosperous future Nashville.

04 Chicago Children’s Museum Renovations Krueck + Sexton Architects Chicago, Illinois 2015 Renovations for the Chicago Children’s Museum focus on the Entry experience for visitors. The Navy Pier will be doing a whole range of renovations, allowing CCM to resign their admissions lobby, vertical circulation and main second floor exhibit spaces. I have worked with the museum on programming, exhibit layout, wayfinding and identity, visitor experience, integration of mobile technologies. Renovations will include an entire new first floor with Entry from the pier.

The Story Hub: The Mini-Movie Memory Maker exhibit opened this January. In this multimedia station, children and the adults produce a mini-movie about their experiences to share and revisit online after they leave the museum. We helped coordinate with exhibit designers and fabrication team to complete this exhibit 19

05 The Seed House (Casa de la Semilla) Community Empowerment Center Wichita, Kansas Kansas State University 2012 The Seed House aims to create an arena for established and emerging community leaders to grow and develop in their capacity to bring justice, equality and sustainability through collective action. The co-founder’s of the Seed House approached Lili Torres and myself with this project over the summer of ‘12. I studied the Pre-Design work done by one of our independent study professors in order to determine which components were essential. I learned start a project from nothing. By using GIS, navigating city code, negotiating with government employees, and talking with clients, I helped The Seed House lay the ground work for a community empowerment center.

06 United Church of Eskridge Ramp AIAS Freedom by Design Kansas State University Eskridge, Kansas 2014 I served as co-Chair of the FBD Chapter, consisting of two faculty advisors and 3 other students. We designed and fabricated a 120’ foot long wheelchair ramp for Eskridge United Methodist Church. I helped lead design and detail charettes. I also worked in the shop fabricating prototypes, which led to the fuselage design with a series of ribs connected to a structural underbelly. I learned the process of digital fabrication, and was trained to pre-fabricate pieces using the CNC router. The entire team constructed of the ramp over the summer.

07 Cool Skins: Ventilated Rainscreens Kansas State University Houston, Texas 2014 Part I: Ventilated Metal Rainscreens Initial research explored improving the cooling performance of ventilated skins by manipulating the geometry of the ventilated cavity. The “turbulator” design has corrugations, which slow down cavity air to increase convection and lower radiative heat transfer. Part II: EPA Laboratory The second semester I applied the Cool Skins research to a proposal for an EPA Laboratory in Houston, Texas. By creating a resilient building that is designed to create a highly functioning pleasant work environment for the EPA, and also that has the potential to have a life beyond it’s intended user, the building will help improve the relevance of the EPA and of itself.

29

Part I Using CFD Simulation and full-scale experimental mock-ups, we were able to design the cavity of a metal rainscreen that would create turbulence to help dissipate heat. This reduced the amount of heat transfered from the envelope .

Part II One principal of resiliency is diversity and redundancy. Distributing and decentralizing program elements allows for more flexible use and shared resources. The modules of the form have the ability to self-organize, and create an interconnected network structure across scales. The building is centered around shaded courtyards to provide for cool, natural light to every space. 31

08 130 North Franklin Krueck + Sexton Architects Chicago, Illinois 130 N Franklin is a 50 story office high-rise slated to be built in the loop. The faceted facade is designed to be a high-performance envelope that provides abundant daylight and unique views to its tenants. I came onto the project during the schematic design phase and helped bring the project though design development, focusing primarily on optimization of the core and helping to coordinate the Planned Development Zoning process. The core utilizes a z-corridor to maximize rental area while providing access to three elevator cores and shared utilities. The project is being designed with a LEED-Gold target.
