Many of the critics were ex-trainers or wildlife experts. On top of the criticisms, the documentary showed how the t h r e e d e a t h s w e r e avoidable and should have been prevented by taking simple precautionary steps. DeVos is unfit for role as Secretary of Education
By: Riya Patel LO’ T Editor in Chief Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, is simply the least ideal choice for the position. Not directly pertinent to the field of education, she has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and political science from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. To add to her lack of qualifications for the position, she has never attended a public school or put her own kids in public schools. Even though this does not directly disqualify her, her complete inexperience in public education makes it pretty difficult for her to understand and relate to the concerns of students and parents struggling with the system.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D VA): Should all K-12 schools receiving government funding be required to meet the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act? “Hello, Goodbye”
Making 2017 a year to remember By: Lily Glackin LO’T Reporter From technological advances to new seasons of our favorite TV series, 2017 has many great things to come. To begin, on August 21, 2017, there will be a total solar eclipse throughout the United States. This is the first Solar Eclipse of the 21st century, and the next one won’t be for another 7 years, in 2024. Although this won’t hit every spot in the US, places like Southern Illinois University have already begun planning Solar Eclipse parties. A positive thing for theatre is that the captivating record selling Broadway show “Hamilton” is going national. This means that you won’t have to travel to New York or Chicago to see the musical, and although Chicago is very close to us, this will be wonderful news for those in other states. The medical field is creating new procedures as well: the head transplant. The Eastern World is researching the positives and negatives of transplanting the head of one patient whose limbs are unable to work properly and placing it onto the body of a brain dead person whose limbs do function. However,
this is not ethical in the Western World so this procedure will not reach these areas in 2017. Of course, technology is always excelling, and in addition to the head transplant being planned, Pilot is another technological advancement that 2017 has in store for us. Waverly Labs has created a ‘smart’ earpiece that can translate different languages. Pilot earpieces can translate 5 different languages (English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish) and comes in 3 different colors. These devices come out in May of 2017 and will change the language barriers between individuals who speak different languages. Last but not least is the arrival of new seasons from our favorite TV series. As “Stranger Things” became a hit Netflix series in 2016, we grew more and more excited for the season 2 premiere. Although there is not a certain release date, it must come out in 2017, right? Besides “Stranger Things,” there are exciting new seasons of “Game of Thrones,” “The Fosters” and “Will and Grace.” Whether you are a thespian, astrologist, or an average teen waiting for more things to watch on Netflix, there is much to look forward to in 2017.

Trump plans for the future
By: Elizabeth Swank LO’T Reporter After one of the most hotly debated elections in American history, Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. Trump released statements last October with plans for his first 100 days in office, and he’s already put some of these efforts in motion in his first daysigning executive orders to repeal Obamacare. Also on his agenda: imposing term limits on Congress, uniting with blue collar workers to keep jobs and factories on US Soil, restoring rule of law, funding the con-
struction of the Mexican/ American wall, and rebuilding everything from military bases to inner-city schools. His economic plan, he estimates, will grow the economy 4% every year and create at least 25 million jobs. Trump pledged to restore prosperity, honesty and security to the US government. But while some criticize Trump for his lack of specifics, others hope he will stay true to his word and make real improvements for the US. Only time, and his first 100 days in office, will tell if President Trump stays true to these promises.

Obama leaves behind a legacy By: Lily Glackin LO’T Reporter Obama came into office ready to handle the 2008 financial crisis. While helping the US become more financially stable, he allowed for 17 million people to gain jobs. Not only that economically, he reduced tax for millions of other Americans. Obama also won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for efforts on strengthening international diplomacy and reducing the US nuclear warhead stockpile by 10%. Not only that, but he reformed health care, savings thousands of Americans lives. The Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, was passed in 2010, allowing Americans to precautionary care and reduce the cost of emergency room visits. Environmentally, Obama had carbon reduction regula-
tions announced in 2014 and then enacted the Clean Power Plan in 2015. He also led efforts to finalize International Climate Agreement. Not only did President Obama accomplish many things but so did the First Lady, Michelle. Michelle Obama launched “Let’s Move!,” trying to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity. The “Let’s Move!” campaign brought new food standards and supported more students with free or reduced lunch through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. So, yes, you can thank Mrs. Obama for our new lunch menus. Although many of us are ready for a change, reflecting on what the Obamas have accomplished over these 8 years is an important aspect to understanding the change people are waiting for.

Rogue One reinvents R u n The J e we ls 3 : the Star Wars name A stellar new album By Truman Van Vooren LO’T Entertainment CoEditor Rogue One is the newest entry in the Star Wars series. It is directed by Gareth Edwards and was released in December. Rogue One had the near impossible task of following Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as being the first of the spinoffs the franchise plans
however, it struggles with pacing and development of some characters. To begin, the movie’s plot takes place between episode three, Revenge of The Sith, and four, A New Hope. It follows the story of a group of soldiers and pilots who have to get the original Death Star plans after seeing a small amount of the station’s power. Some of
acter development and pacing. For example, as the movie begins, it starts off on Jyn Erso (the main character) as a kid and gives some backstory, but then the movie goes to present time and introduces tons of new characters, which can be confusing. Also, most of the action scenes in the middle of the film are minor compared to the later ones.

Run the Jewels, also known as RTJ, is a duo consisting of two rappers, Killer Mike and El-P. Their newest album was unexpectedly released 3 weeks early on December 24, 2016. I had never heard of the duo before and saw something on Reddit about their new release. I saw their album cover and thought it was cool so I gave the album a listen. This was a great decision as this album didn’t disappoint with a good amount of songs and runtime at 14 songs and 52 minutes. Run the Jewels is fastly identifiable as “industrial” hip hop with the type of production in the songs.
This is apparent in songs like “Stay Gold” when Killer Mike and El-P talk about high fiving right after high fiving noises are played in the background or the song “Thieves! (Screamed the Ghost) [feat. Tunde Adebimpe]” where a soundbyte from “The Twilight Zone” is used to open the song and a part from one of MLK’s speeches is used to end the song. Also to note, this album does a fantastic job of going from one song to another with good transitions, making it better to listen to the songs in order instead of on shuffle. Another area where RTJ shines is their lyrics. Some of the lyrics that come to mind are in songs such as “A Report to the Shareholders/
Kill Your Masters” where El-P raps “This life’ll stress you like Orson Welles on the radio” referring to the infamous radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds that caused panic or in the song “Hey Kids (Bumaye)[feat. Danny Brown],” where Danny Brown raps, “Word Architect, when I arch the tech, I’ll part ya’ neck” using multi-syllabic rhyming. Overall this album is definitely worth a listen as there are so many songs that are good. Some of my favorites include: “Call Ticketron”, “Hey Kids (Bumaye) [feat. Danny Brown]”, “Oh Mama”, and “A Report to the Shareholders/ Kill Your Masters.” I give this album a 9/10 rating as it exceeded all of my expectations.

to add. The movie does a good job at distancing itself from the main series by introducing a new cast of characters, some more memorable than others. The other difference is how the movie has no real jedi as the main hero and takes more of a the soldier’s point of view. The movie has incredible moments along with a good plot and amazing special effects;
the movie’s best moments are when the team is all together and they have to work as a whole to stop the incoming enemy. The movie, of course, stays on top of the special effects and the soundtrack standards of the other movies, even without well-respected composer John Williams. Even though the movie has some incredible highs, it does struggle with char-
It gets much better once the battle on Scariff begins, which is about the last thirty minutes of the movie. In conclusion, Rogue One, even with its minor flaws, is still one of the better movies this year based on the amount of great scenes and the fact that it gives a new perspective into the well-known Star Wars franchise. Overall 8/10.

By: Abhi Sodanhi LO’T News Editor “I’ll do all my homework.” Maybe this will be true for the first day, week, or maybe even the first month if you’re particularly motivated. But doing homework never lasts. “I’ll get more organized.” It doesn’t matter how many trapper binders you own. First, you start with a folder for each class. Then, you accidentally put one assignment in another class’s folder. From there, it just goes downhill, and you end up with one folder that probably has more pages in it than your history textbook.
“I’ll stop procrastinating.” Honestly, this bullet point doesn’t need further explanation. Why do homework when you can tweet about having too much homework instead? “I will get to bed at a reasonable hour.” Netflix is upping its game this year, and you should too. Don’t stop at just five hours of binge-watching. Strive for more; eight, ten, or twelve hours is reasonable. The sky is the limit. “I will fill out my planner.” You will lose your planner before you have the opportunity to fill it out.
“I will stop wearing sweatpants every day!” Jeans equal sandpaper and restricted movement. Sweatpants have much broader appeal. You don’t have to actually change for gym class and the athleisure look is in. Plus, sweatpants feel like warm hugs for your legs. “I am going to get more involved with clubs and activities!” For seniors, college decisions have already been made, so don’t worry about fluffing up your college app any longer. For any other class, you’re probably busy enough. Think
long and hard before trying to commit yourself to any more activities. “Just one more episode.” One episode turns into two, then three, then four. Pretty soon you’re at the cliffhanger end of a season, so might as well start onto the next. “I won’t hit my snooze button more than once.” A very easy fix to this problem is to dismiss all your alarms and just don’t wake up at all. “I am going to study before the day of the test.” A much more realistic goal is to study during lunch the day of the test.

on Kinney Shoes’ ads were heels for $6.99 and Kinney “Kapers,” which were low tops available in a variety of colors, much like today’s Converse shoes but for only $2.99. With such a large focus on shoes, ads for socks became popular in the late 1960s. Mosenfelders advertised their crew socks, closely resembling Nike socks today, for merely $1.50 a pair. Present day ads have changed quite a bit from their predecessors. Up until this year, the LO’T advertisements and paper had always been black and white. Nowadays, advertisements manipulate colors and creatively snag the attention of students. Some ads use incentives to read the paper, such as free Whitey’s ice cream. While Line O’ Type has seen a variety of ads evolve over the last century, old and new local ads are a constant reminder of all the Quad Cities has to offer.
