Canada’s Liberal Party maintains power, loses majority By: Larissa Horton LO’T News Editor Canada, our neighbors to the north, have just recently (October 21st) held the general election for seats in the lower house of their legislature, the House of Commons. The election kept Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party in power with a plurality, but the loss of 20 seats means the Liberals have, at 157 seats owned,
lost the majority of the House of Commons’ 338 seats. The Liberals’ main opposition, Andrew Scheer’s Conservative Party, gained 26 seats in this election. The Bloc Québécois, the New Democratic Party (NDP), and the Green Party are all maintaining a presence in Parliament as well, with 32, 24, and 3 seats respectively. Canada’s gov-
ernment functions on a parliamentary system based on that of the United Kingdom. In this system, the leader of the party with a plurality of seats in the House of Commons becomes the Prime Minister. In other words, this election decides the composition of both the executive and most of the legislative branch. The upper house of Canadian Parliament, the Senate, is
appointed by the Governor General as instructed by the Prime Minister rather than being decided by election. Though the Senate technically outranks the House of Commons, the latter is much more powerful in practice. thirteen minority governments in its history prior to this election, none of which lasted the full 4 years before the next officially scheduled general election. Time will tell if Trudeau’s can be the first.

By: Samuel Schwartz LO’T News Editor News broke Wednesday when Google claimed it designed a quantum computer that could solve a problem in 200 seconds though the world’s current fastest supercomputer would take 10,000 years to figure out the same problem. With this experiment, Google argues it has proved the John Preskill’s quantum supremacy theory that quantum computers could
be able to one day outperform classical computers. Competitor IBM stated in a blogpost that Google had overestimated the problem’s difficulty, and that the problem could be solved in 2.5 days or less with a classical computer. The company went on to “urge the community to treat claims that, for the first time, a quantum computer did something that a classical computer cannot with a large dose of skepticism.”

Do we need to put more focus on cybersecurity? By: Maya Gonzalez LO’T Editor in Chief
Everyone has had experience with a computer virus, whether we are aware of it or not. Many of us were lucky enough for them to be caught by an antivirus program before they could cause any real damage. Sometimes though, people aren’t that fortunate. The idea of “cybersecurity” is a buzzword that tends to fade in and out of the public’s conscience. One of the biggest breaches in recent memory was WannaCry in May 2017, which according to Krebs on Security caused an estimated four billion dollars in damages for personal computers and huge companies by deleting important data and pushing back companies by weeks, making them lose time and profits. It resulted in an extreme uproar from people that sparked conversation on cybersecurity. Once again, even with all of the damages, it soon faded into the sidelines and was forgotten by the general public by the next news cycle. The way that WannaCry spread to such a massive extent was an exploit in Microsoft operating systems, EternalBlue, discovered by the NSA who never reported the exploit months prior. The virus installed itself from a backdoor, and once one computer was infected, it could spread itself further to other computers on the same network. The knowledge of the exploit was leaked and eventually taken advantage of to reap huge profit from people desperate to pay the three hundred to six hundred dollar fee so their computers weren’t completely destroyed. Even when host servers are shut down because of

Green Moline club is giving back to the community Interact Club fights student hunger By: Janey Locander L’OT Reporter
New to the school this year is the Green Moline Club, something Ms. Amy Ciucci has been wanting to start at the school for a while now. It wasn’t until the end of the 2018-2019 school year that she came together with other non-profit organizations in the area in order to get it started. The club was able to grow numerous crops such as tomatoes, squash, peppers, and beans. These crops were “donated to several local food banks, including the one here at MHS. In our first season, we grew almost 1,000 pounds of produce!” says Ciucci. All of the produce that is grown in the Giving Gardens doesn’t have any pesticides and it’s grown in organic soil, so what’s being grown is what’s best for everyone consuming it. As Ciucci puts it, “ Our produce
is the freshest and healthie s t availa b l e because people c a n eat it immediately after we pick it, providing the highest concentration of vitam i n s a n d nutrients.” Green Moline is also planning on adding new things to the garden like a wider variety of vegetables and will feature
new “herb gardens on the Senior Patio [that will be] maintained by MHS clubs and activities,” Ciucci says. Those herbs would include rosemary. basil, cilantro, chives and others. Farther down the line, she would also like to set up smaller gardens around the elementary schools. Her biggest goal would be to start up an orchard on campus and possibly some sort of greenhouse to “start seeds and grow produce all year long, even in the coldest months.” She also thinks it would be a fun idea to start a “Harvest Fest.” Overall, Green Moline has a lot of big dreams and goals for
improving the way the community gardens and consumes food. It’s a great club for anyone that has been wanting to give back to those in need of nutritious food or be a little more earthconscious. All anyone has to do is sign-up for updates through the remind app. Text @ greenmol to the number 81010. Green Moline is a pretty low commitment club, so if you can’t make it one day don’t worry about it! An extra pair of helping hands is always appreciated and welcome at the Giving Gardens.

With the holidays fast approaching, memories and anticipation of warm meals with loved ones are growing stronger. Unfortunately, many people around the world and in our own community aren’t able to experience these annual pleasures. However, groups such as the Student Hunger Drive are fighting to combat this issue. In the month of October, the student hunger drive worked to collect money and cans from the student body. On October 27th they extended these efforts into the community by going door to door asking for monetary and non-perishable donations. “Most people probably know there are hungry people but think it’s just difficult to get involved,” explains Samuel Schwartz, a four-year member of the organization, “this is sort of something that gives kids an idea of how easy it is to get involved and make a real change in the world.” And it shows. Four years ago, one in five students went hungry at home, but now that number has gone down to one in six. Although it’s a small improvement, progress is still being made with the help of the student body. Something new with this year’s goal is not just the quantity of donations, but now the River Bend Food Bank is asking schools to seek out quality food as well. In the past, they would have schools donating 50-pound bags of flour which would sometimes partially go to waste; instead, they’re asking that students attempt to collect food that they would want to eat. “The Student Hunger Drive’s goal is to get young people involved.” By getting young people involved, the organization is engaging a younger base in order to grow and help more people as time progresses. Engaging the youth also has helped the quality of their donations because they believe students understand first-hand the type of food people want to eat. The Student Hunger Drive is focused on having students interact and give back to the community.

New Call of Duty lives up to all the hype By: Phineas Van Vooren L’OT Editor
With Call of Duty being a very common game in high schoolers’ households the new Call of Duty has been highly anticipated. To start things off, there are some new game modes that weren’t in the previous Call of Duty, Black Ops 4. Campaign finally returns after being replaced by the battle royale Blackout in Black Ops 4. With all consoles and PC being cross play compatible, this is a huge stride in the right direction for the gaming community. Multiplayer feels a whole lot different this year than last year, not just cause of cross-play, but also with a change to time to kill. With time to kill being a whole lot faster this year, it again adds to
this new tactical feeling which carries over to multiplayer. Although a downside to this is there has been a lot more people camping in corners and buildings. Time to kill might not be the only reason for this as this game had just come out last Friday. Because Call of Duty has just been released, I cannot predict wheter the game will be embraced as a great game yet, but I would easily give this game a solid 9/10.

Celebrating the dead is the backbone of Mexican traditions By: Guadalupe Cuellar LO’T Reporter
Contrary to its name, El Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, isn’t a one-day, but a multi-day holiday celebrated annually in Mexico on the first two days of November. This celebration of both life and death finds its roots in Mesoamerican culture, where even to this day common traditions and customs are still practiced. MHS Golf seasons come to a close By: Trevor Francque LO’T Sports Editor
The Moline boys and girls golf seasons have recently come to a close. Both teams had good seasons filled with much success. One of the season’s biggest goals for the boys’ team was to beat rival school, Alleman, which fortunately they did accomplish! And when asked about the win, senior Dylan Wiemers said ‘Beating Alleman was such a big win for us. We had worked really hard on our techniques.” In addition to this huge win, both Moline golf teams had players advance to Sectionals. Sophmore Kacie Knary advanced to the Girls IHSA Tournament in

Maroon girls tennis serves up several wins at sectionals and state By: Sarah Gustafson LO’T Sports Reporter It is no surprise that the girls’ tennis team have had so much success this year! The girls have put in maximum effort in order to perform their best. Needless to say, the long hours of practice have paid off as they won the Western Big 6 Conference title for a second time in a row. But, it was no easy feat. The girls were neck and neck with Quincy, but, Moline managed to gain enough points to beat out the competition and secure a spot in sectionals. At sectionals, varsity player Monika Birski placed second in singles and had this to say about what keeps her motivated during the matches. Birski states “I’d like to think my greatest motivation is not trying to win a match, but trying to improve my game every time I play someone. If I can learn how to improve myself first, then I can move on to other aspects of the season like
going undefeated or losing a few matches in a season.” In addition to Birski placing second, doubles duo Sarah Gustafson and Lauren Myers also took a win. They placed second, which allowed them to play at State last weekend in Chicago. Monika Birski was down two sets, however, later came back wining her last two. As for the doubles team, they were also down but came back. Team captain, Beyonce Gonzalez, gives a quick recap about the season and the overall team dynamic. Gonzalez expresses “The season went incredibly well. We were undefeated in dual matches and had a large number of girls who came out to play despite the hot, humid weather. Although, I would say that the best thing, besides watching my teammates go to State, was watching how all of the girls on the team came together as a whole.
