THE HOUSE

I

celebrate this house every day,” says Claudette Hollenbeck of her home on Lake Raponda in Wilmington. “I adore it. Living in this home feeds the soul.” “This project was more than a renovation,” says Joseph Cincotta of LineSync Architecture. “I’d call it a transformation.” Hollenbeck had long owned a rustic camp on this small lake in southern Vermont. It was a summer cottage with a single room. Hollenbeck wanted to live there year-round—and so the work began. The original room became the kitchen, under a steeply slanted roof at the back of the new home. In front, Cincotta designed a compact three-story addition, tucked gracefully into the sloping hill. The lower level is a one-room garage, with covered exterior stairs that lead to the main floor. This level includes the renovated kitchen and a new living room, where walls of windows overlook the lake. A small glassed-in porch holds a hammock for lounging. The ten-foot-high ceilings and exposed rafters add a sense of height and give the room a subtle urban feel. “I asked Joseph to design something that felt a bit like a New York City loft,” says Hollenbeck. The rugged wideplank floorboards are made of a super-durable painted plywood, and a pretty propane stove helps keep the room cozy in winter. Upstairs, there’s a new bedroom and bath, with an antique clawfoot tub. The bathroom has a row of interior windows that overlook the exterior windows of the stairwell, which allows for private views of the woods while taking a relaxing soak. Above: The original camp was a one-room building, seen at the back of the expanded home under the steeply slanted roof. That room is now the kitchen. In the front of the house, architect Joseph Cincotta designed three stories of space: a one-car garage on the lower level, a living room and glass porch on the main floor (below), and a bed and bath upstairs (above).

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and adjacent porch offer lake views from every vantage point.

LineSync Architecture TO BUILD THIS STRAW-BALE home, architect Joseph Cincotta started with a concrete slab containing radiant heat, then added a post-and-beam frame. The walls are made of 2-by-4 studs and bales of barley straw, grown in Richmond, along with additional insulation of recycled styrene plastic foam. The walls are sealed with plaster made of lime-based clay from the surrounding area. The clay has a natu-

ral give, so it resists cracking, and it dries quickly after getting wet. Between the roof trusses: three feet of insulation, made from ground newspapers mixed with borax to resist fire and rot over time. “Everything about this home is non-toxic and sustainable,” says Cincotta.
