hospital bed with a lateral tilt
Latera Acute – think laterally… Routine nursing activities often require physical handling of the patient several times a day, often in non-ergonomic positions. LINET has developed the Latera Acute patient bed with a lateral tilt to turn the patient with little physical exertion, minimising excessive physical strain and the risk of injury.
LATERAL TILT Reduces the physical strain for nursing staff when handling patients. Reduces the risk of occupational injury. Routine nursing activities can be performed more efficiently. Effective management of pressure ulcers. Helps prevent complications in patients with lymphoedema and facilitates post-operative drainage. Helps prevent the negative effects of immobilisation. Helps increase the quality of life for long-term or permanently immobile patients.

SAVING ENERGY – USE UP 10× LESS FORCE The force required to turn a patient on the Latera Acute is 10 times lower in comparison with a standard patient bed.
20% TIME SAVED The time required for completing activities on the Latera Acute such as changing bed linen is reduced by up to 20% in comparison with a standard patient bed.

Lateral tilt in nursing The benefits of the Latera Acute for daily nursing activities are subject to two basic prerequisites: The adjustment of the lateral tilt is safer for patients The lateral tilt adjustment is easy and reliable for nursing activities
SIMPLE AND RELIABLE CONTROL Staff are able to effectively position the patient bed using conveniently located control panels.
SAFETY GO BUTTON The safety GO button enhances patient safety by preventing unintentional bed positioning. The GO button activates the bed controls for 3 minutes. Three minutes after the button is pressed, the controls automatically deactivate so any bed positioning will only occur after intentional activation.
15º LATERAL TILT The Latera Acute has a 15 degree lateral tilt which enables the patient to be turned to the side with the minimum of effort. COLUMN CONSTRUCTION The three-column construction enables lateral tilt adjustment and provides the bed with exceptional stability and rigidity.
SUPERVISOR CONTROL PANEL Ergonomically shaped with clear panel graphics the supervisors control panel is centrally located for ease of access.
PATIENT HANDSET CONTROL A practical control for the patient and nurse contains controls for the bed’s basic positions, including backrest tilt and adjustment of the mattress platform height.
SATELLITE CONTROL PANEL Symbols for controlling individual functions are large and clearly visible. The buttons are distinguished by various colours with embossed symbols.
4
LATERAL TILT FOOT CONTROL Foot controls are located on the bed undercarriage on both sides enabling practical and easy hands-free adjustment of the lateral tilt.
SAFE LATERAL TILT The unique three-column construction of the Latera Acute ensures stability for lateral tilt adjustment and smooth, stable and efficient movement. LATERA POSITIONING CUSHION The Latera positioning cushion can be used during patient positioning to protect the patient against pressure ulcers and direct contact with the side rail.
PROCEDURE FOR MAKING THE BED WITH A LATERAL TILT Changing bed linen is just one way in which the lateral tilt can be effectively used.
1. The nurse can adjust the bed to a safe working height and thus can maintain the correct working posture.
2. The side rail closest to the nurse is raised a positioning cushion allows the patient to rest against it. Using the foot controls the nurse can tilt the bed laterally.
3. The lateral tilt transfers the patient’s centre of gravity substantially reducing the work required to turn the patient onto their side. Heavier patients can be turned with the minimum of effort.
4. With the patient’s position stable, the nurse can fully devote their time to changing the bed linen from the other side of the bed.
5. Using the foot controls, the nurse can adjust the bed to the horizontal position, turn the patient onto their back, raise the other side rail and place a Latera positioning cushion against it to protect the patient. FOOT CONTROLS Foot controls for height adjustment and examination position are equipped with a mechanical guard which prevents accidental activation.
6. The patient can then be turned onto their other side with the aid of the lateral tilt and the nurse can finish changing the bed linen on the other side of the bed.

Effective hospital infection prevention Effective prevention of hospital infections are based upon thorough decontamination and complete hygiene of all surfaces on the wards including the bed itself. The simple construction and use of joint-free technology ensures that the Latera Acute is very easy to clean and decontaminate.
Most hospital infections are spread by staff, patients and visitors by touch. The side rails and head and foot boards of beds are particular area’s that will come into constant contact with staff and patients. The joint-free technology used on the Latera Acute ensures that these areas are without joints and have a smooth and non-absorbent surface, thus ensuring that they are easy to clean and wipe down.
COLUMN CONSTRUCTION The column lifting units of the Latera Acute maximise the ease of cleaning and decontamination procedures preventing the infiltration of dangerous substances. The columns consist of smooth aluminium profiles without difficult to clean gaps and joints. Columns can be easily wiped down and cleaned. The construction allows unrestricted access to all the bed parts.
6
Easily removable mattress platform covers enable easy access to other parts of the bed.
Ventilation holes within mattress platform cover allow for air circulation and are easy to wash and clean.
Use of foot pedals for height adjustment and lateral tilt ensure hands free adjustment of the bed in order to limit the risk of infection.
HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTION Despite advances in modern medicine there is a constant struggle with the increased risk of secondary infections. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 17 million people die of infectious diseases every year, while a great number of these infections are associated with nosocomial – hospital acquired infections. Constantly more frequent invasive procedures and excessive administration of antibiotics (resulting in resistance) give rise to nosocomial infections. Nosocomial infections are among the ten most common causes of death in the world. Infections contracted during a stay in hospital prolong and make a patient’s treatment more expensive, and increase their physical suffering. Medical staff are also exposed to the risk of hospital infections. Up to 30 percent of hospital infections can be avoided through adequate prevention.
