FLOWING

Community reactivate through merging flooding into water circulation system, enriching landscape, and building effective units

Jefferson Chalmers, MI, USA | 2022 | Group Work

Instructor: Craig Borum | Claudia Wigger

Flowing rainwater is collected on the designed double facade, filtered, recycled, and reused in the community; kids flow in the community on various playing areas and landscapes; flowing people hang around on water-penetration pavements to enjoy community lives; flowing public spaces and balconies enable residents to embrace joyful spaces with efficiency simultaneously.

In this project, we're trying to be practical, detailed, researchbased, and considering the most demanded things among the residents also according to the community's natural conditions.

Site Analysis

With the natural conditions of Jefferson chambers, the whole terrain is like a basin with a relatively low elevation.

And our site is at the center of the area of Jefferson chambers, which is the relatively lowest point. There are also flooding issues recorded in FEMA floodplain legends. And all those make us think about addressing flooding issues and making the best use of the water resources on our site.

Natural Conditions

Strategies

-Reused as a public space -Keeping the beautiful pointed roof structure, butreplacing the roof covering with glass makes theinterior space brighter and more suitable as anevent space.

-Add some public space that residents like -Building on the existing green space by linking other open spaces toexpand the overall green space area and make more land morepenetrable.

-For example: gardens, orchards, rain gardens and walkways, etc

-After widening the lawn, connect the back of the end road to make the trafficmore reasonable.

-Utilize the low ground level to create a natural depression in the middle of thesite to collect rainwater and recycle it after filtering it through the undergroundsystem.

-In addition to the depressions, other aquaculture ecology will be developedand the water-friendly landscape will be enjoyed by everyone.

The area's topography is like a bowl.Centuries of sediment deposits from the river have built up the river bank as a natural levee to the same elevation as EJefferson.

Much of Jefferson Chalmers lied in a FEMA- designed floodplain. The soils in Jefferson Chalmers can support storage of rain water but not as much infiltration can happen. Evidence of the historic stream channels is alsovisible.

Master Plan 5

The infrastructure system consists of energy and water collection and recycling. The infrastructure stands function not only as a shelter, bench, and light but also water and energy recycling system. The smaller versions are assembled on the roof. The water collected by the rain and recycled water from drainage and through the plant tray for irrigation for the vertical plant facade and makeup of a selfsustain system, solar energy provides additional benefits for the whole building and also provides lighting and charging service for either electrical car or devices.

There are hallways collecting entrances of each unit, hallways also serve as communal and fluid spaces where people can meet each other. There are inner courtyards for residents to seat, walk, and also enjoy the view. There are red pedestrians: composed of metal mesh crossing in the site to enhance the connection and enable water to penetrate simultaneously. The ponds and wood stairs: are serving as resting areas for people, while the ponds are also used to collect rainwater flowing from roof gardens through collectors. And water in ponds will be delivered to the underground water tank. The 1st floor: is temporarily and deliberately set vacant for more potential uses like coffee shops, walking dogs, pop-up shops, or other community gatherings. There are also double-skin facades: including layers of window openings and aluminum metal grids with climbing ivy and flower pots, forming shades, temperature isolation, and natural ventilation from the vertical direction through hollows. 1st Level Plan 2nd Level Plan Inner Courtyard Landscape design & 1st floor & building facade 3rd Level Plan Circulation Core Bushes Pavement Entrance of Building Surrounding Ponds Circulation Core Balcony Hallways Flowing open spaces in units Exterior Stair Circulation Core Sight Analysis People Flow Ventilation Flow Activity Range of one person 7

Unit Types

The unit axon drawings showed the uit types and activities in them. Every type of unit are sharing the same "FLOWING PUBLIC SPACE"concepts of setting the public area to one fluid open side, and the private spaces of bedrooms on the same another side. Also, there are balconies with greens and benches for every unit to make use residents can have enjoyable lives as much as possible.

There are three different types of important nodes of detail, including the section details of the roof gardens, wall sections with hanging flower pots and aluminum frames, and also a section of the inner floor.

Considering our main material of CLT and the climate in Detroit, we choose to place the insulation layer outside the CLT, and our sections also considered our construction method of prefab boards and easy installation.

A Isolated Medical Community Planning & Building Design with Cables as Transportation

Wuhan, CN | 2020 | Individual Work

To be honest, humans can be never fully ready for pandemics in any period from history to nowness. It always causes horrible effects and panic when it begins, though pandemics might be finally normalized after a while, just like Ebola, COVID-19, SARS, and any other pandemics. What if we have such a community work isolated as a temporary shelter with medical and living resources prepared for suddenly appeared situations? And to the special community can also be partially used as a normal resort in peacetime.

IMMIGRATION TO MARS

Livable Curved Space Design through 3D Printing on Mars

2018 | Individual Work

Building settlements on Mars will be like inventing a new vernacular architecture. Martians will be like ingenious settlers, inventing structures for the first time, and understanding local materials, climate physics, safety, and comfort. Why do people want to immigrate to Mars?

1.The resources on the Earth is continually decreasing with the development of human beings. There probably will be a day when human beings must give up their only habitat because of the exhaustion of resources.

2.The exploration of the universe is a popular topic. The findings and research results encourage people to continually devote themselves to this industry.

3.Mars is the most similar planet to the Earth in the solar system of the universe, especially in temperature, air quality, air pressure, radiation, and daylight.

In these circumstances, immigrating to Mars is proposed. As an architectural student, I want to provide a design proposal regarding living space and environment on Mars integrating the local environment and possible future technologies.

WUHAN TOURISM & CULTURE CENTER

Waterfront Urban Space and Existing Building Renovation Design

Wuhan, CN | 2021 | Individual Work

Instructor: Zou Han

The project, which will be built on the riverbank of Wuhan, China, intends to create a riverfront urban symbol that would serve as a tourism and cultural center. Our strategy was to examine and rehabilitate the wharf building, maintain part of the structures, keep the existing people crossing, and create a significant form and landscape park for flooding on the site, which is built on an existing freight wharf that embodies the city's history.

The original building is covered by a light film structure.

ETFE membrane (ethylenetetra-fluoro-ethylene) is a superior alternative material for transparent architectural curtain walls and roofs. ETFE membrane is built of artificial high-strength fluoropolymer (ETFE) with a special anti-adhesive surface that makes it very stain-resistant and easy to clean. It has excellent durability and fire resistance.

Night View

At night, the film-covered building forms part of the light show and an iconic scenery along the river.

Interior View

The interior of the film transforms into a projection curtain that plays tourism promotion videos to give people a more visual experience.

Yangtze River, Wuhan, China. The Yangtze River runs through the heart of Wuhan, with multiple bridges and river crossings, and boats are an important form of transit as well as a famous tourist attraction. The property is surrounded by five large green parks, as well as other well-known and representative Wuhan attractions. Furthermore, the property is located near a large historic district. Given the site's abundance of tourism resources, a tourism and culture center should be constructed nearby.
-During the flood season, the water will rise 3 to 4 meters over the chosen site, submerging some of the existing structures.
section facing the river is a long bare beach and parking lot, and the lovely scenic playgroup along the river is unused. The existing pier building facades are also in disrepair and unusable.

MAGIC CUBE

Multi-functional Building integrating the activities of students and residents

Wuhan, CN | 2019 | Individual Work

The relationship between the forms and space is the essence of architectural art and architectural science.

Because of China's large population, there are dense various residential buildings and office buildings, and everyone has to survive in a crowded environment.

For a large population of students in China, the campus usually covers a large area, and the facilities are comprehensive, the greening is rich, campus usually covers a large area.

However, the campus is relatively isolated from the city, making it difficult for citizens to share green and some open spaces. Therefore, I use “Magic Cube” as the inspiration, putting various functions into a cube-shaped multi-functional building on campus, providing activity space for both students and residents.
