SONGAMBELE HOSPITAL | inpatient ward site nkololo, tanzania intro Located just West of the beautiful Serengeti National Park, the Songambele Hospital lies within a small village with approximately 22,000 residents. The most recent development was the surgical ward, which houses state-of-the-art equipments and trained hospital staffs. With the need of expansion to cater healthcare to more people in the region, the inpatient ward is going to be an important addition to help patients who need long-term, supervised stay to recieve their treatment. The facility is in a region of limited resources such as electricity, clean water, technology, etc. Therefore, the designs for the Inpatient Ward should maximize available staff, redude construction cost and difďŹ culty, optimize materials to create a facility that effectively cares for patients, their families, and the Songrambele Staffs. The development includes two phases, each has: 12 exam rooms medication nurse station storage clean suplly public toilets soiled utility ofďŹ ce

MISSION TO UKRAINE | outpatient rehab + clinic site zhitomir, ukraine size 37,000.00 sf partner toluwalupe olayinka intro Mission to Ukraine (MTU) is planning to create a new facility for their outpatient rehab and clinic. MTU is a nonprofit organiztion with the mission for providing care for patients with social and physical disabilities. This new facility will be used by patients from all over Ukraine. The site is heavily wooded with tall cedar trees, deciduous overgrowth, and has a grade slope of about 6m from north to south. Just south of the MTU site is a park that adjoins a large river. This existing landscape should be an extension of the MTU site, and embraced as a solution. The MTU site is part of an overall master planned development. This project will be one of the first projects developed included in that master plan. There is no height restriction and a 20’ building setback should be maintained from the property line.

MTU wants their new facility to take advantage of the site. They only need 20 spaces for vehicles as most of the visitors / staff will be picked up and dropped off or will utilize mass transit. Functionally, MTU wants as much interior spaces that are occupied to have access to daylight. Three entry points to the building should be planned for; a main entry, a service entry and a retail entry for a second-hand clothing boutique. While exterior spaces can only be used a few months out of the year in Zhitomir, a thoughtful approach to landscaped areas, gardens, etc. was incorporated into the design. A broad, cursory understanding of rehab and clinic design is necessary.

VALLES CALDERA | Rajendra Pachauri climate change research center site valles caldera, new mexico intro Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals suggest that 97% or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree: climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities (real and man-made, and affecting communities in every part of the country). In addition, most of the leading scientific organizations wouldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling as seen in sea level rise, global temperature rise, warm oceans, shrinking ice sheets, declining artic sea ice, etc. However, too many people (including elected officials) deny the science of climate change. Along with their polluter allies, they are blocking progress in the fight against climate change. Since 2002, Pachauri has headed up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. A UN body, the IPCC doesn’t carry out original research but rather compiles reports based on the collective knowledge. The Rajendra Pacouri Climate Change Research Facility at Valles Caldera, MN (RPCCRF) works to support decision makers throughout the world to prepare for and manage the risks of climate change and sea level rise. Moreover, one main function of the building is to reduce the CO2 emission footprint and join the movement to save the Earth from climate change. Through the weaving of interior and exterior, nature and living space, the facility reduces the greenhouse gas emission and blends in with the caldera while preserving it.

tap root quaking aspen root system One aspen tree is actually only a small part of a larger oranism. A stand or group of aspen trees is considered a singular organism with the main life force underground in the extensive root system. Before a single aspen trunk appears above the surface, the root system may lie dormant. When an aspen tree dies or as light becomes available from openings, chemical signals from the tree to the roots stimulate new sprouts to start growing. Through this regrowth, an aspen clone usually lives much longer than its individual trees. Even though individual aspen trees are not very old, aspen clones can be hundreds of years old, or many years until the conditions are just right, including sufďŹ cient sunlight. In a single stand, each tree is a generic replicate of the other, hence the name a “cloneâ€? of aspens used to describe a stand. Each individual tree can live for 40-150 years above ground, but the root system of the colony is long lived. In some cases, this is for thousands of years, ending up new trunks as the older trunks die off above ground. For this reason, it is considered to ve an indicator of ancient woodlands.

WINDOW : WALL RATIO STUDY This simulation represents two types of unit that were hypothetically built in Valles Caldera. The ďŹ rst one with extensive walls and limited windows. The second unit is composed of the opposite component. With the Valles Caldera environment, the simulation shows that the ďŹ rst unit would required less energy to operate. Due to the fact that there are more walls, it provides more insulation to keep the heat in instead of losing heat to the outside like the second unit. Hence, the Net CO2 emission would be lowered.

the triplex site dallas intro In today’s active world, many people no longer want or need the maintenance of extensive gardens. These three townhomes in the suburb of Dallas City have been designed to be the perfect answer for this lifestyle. From the outside, the building consists of three pure white undulating bars stacking on each other while being pinned down and divided into three sections vertically by the red datum walls. These walls divide the massing and the housing unit but doesn’t detach the horizontal reading of the bending bars. The Triplex gives a moment to the neighborhood which is ourishing with comtemporary/modern architecture.

house in the Valley intro Approaching the site is a slanted journey due to its natural topography. Despite that, the client was drawn to the internal, cozy character of natural structure and would like to have her summer retreat house there. The client is a world-renowned photographer and she has acrophobia. Hence, the house was designed to lay gradual to the slope of the valley, blending in with nature and its essense while tucking itself against the site. Because of her profession, photography programs such as photo gallery, dark room, workshop, etc. are essential to the design.

the Astronomers lodge site mcdonald observatory, fort davis, texas intro The Astronomers lodge was designed to accomodate astronomers and staffs on ofďŹ cal business. It also serves as a hotel for visitors. The tepescopes and the visitor center where the Star Parties are hosted are in the backround of the lodge. The main concept was to adapt with nature, giving the occupants the experience of bking one with the universe as it is the place to see the stars. Therefore, light exposures at night are very limited to prevent light polution. The lodge offers a wide range of hospitality such as suites for long-term visiting researchers, restaurant, conference room, etc.
