Residential Reconstruction
-FOR LOW-INCOME GROUP WITH the development of national economy, China’s ordinary people’s living standard has a big promotion, urban and rural residents living environment has undergone a fundamental change, and the housing conditions also get a big improvement. But compared with the rich group, the income of low-income group grows relatively slow, and the prospects are grim. To realize the social justice, the living conditions and living environment are more and more aware of low-income group. The housing problem is the basic survival problems, which needs to be studied first.

Where
Goal We visited Dashi Village community, and took investigation on an old building area there. The goal of this design is aim to promote the living environment with a minimum cost.
The community is ran through by a main road, and the buildings are outspread along with it. This road connects the community and Shuang Bei business center, also the only bus line for residents to go out. Near the community, the crossroad is a small business center serve for residents who live around here, also a bus station and a public square.

A
How Situation of the community is satisfactory. It’s convenient for residents to go to work or to school, or to buy the daily necessities. Also the medical security is efficient enough. The community shows a peaceful living atmosphere.
B
Who Residents of this community are the factory workers and families nearby. Now mainly the olds and renters. There are seven types of residents.

Scope Long life span

The possibility to buy a commodity house is small for the residents. Thus in the long life cycle, the family structure will changes with children’s grow up, education, work, marriage and have their children.
This investigation takes 14 old buildings as the objects. They are mainly built in the 70s and all have three floors. According to the location and condition, they are divided into three groups as is shown in the picture.
01
Reconstruction of C Group Take the way of on-the-spot and questionnaire investigation, to summarizes the existing problems and residential needs and to get the strategy.
1. First is the analysis of the building: shabby, lack of spaces for clothes to hang out, and the leak problem.
Survey The survey shows that 60% of residents agreed to reconstruct this community, but 72% are willing to move back after reconstruction. 1/3 of them are because of the neighborhood relationship, 2/3 are for the short distant to go to work.
Why C group is constituted of three gallery-buildings which built in the 70s, and each construction area is 40 ㎥. Most residents lived here for years, and their relationship is harmonious. C group is of satisfactory environment and convenient life, but the building is old and shabby.
2. Then is the observation of residents’ life style: long time of outdoor activities.
01
Strategy
-ADAPTABILITY Lack of spaces for clothes to hang out and for storage are the main problems of living. To tackle these problems, more than one balcony are designed in every household. They can be closed as a room for the change of family structure .
Tetris The existing plan divides into inerratic squares. By the different partition ways, it can turn to different types, in order to adapt the change of family structure.

Retrofit design of the Gasholder Gasholder
-YOUTH COMMUNITY CHONGQING Ironwork is a large factory of a long history of hundreds years. In 2009 it moved to other place. Thus the original factory is abandoned, and a large number of workshops and equipment are left unused. A gasholder is chosen to retrofit to a youth community.
The diameter of this gasholder is 38m, its height is 55m, capacity is 50000m続. Its structure is truss and pillar, with a double shell and the shell can be lift up and down.

When the skin gets down, the two upper layers can be a view space.
When the skin lifts up, the two upper layers can be a exhibition gallery.

Analysis & Concept With the past success, this factory has deep cultural atmosphere and strong identification. The retrofit concept is based on the analysis of the target population. According to the four types of potential residents, in the community there are single apartments, soho living units, artist loft and exhibition gallery, and the internal business street.

Police Bureau Design
This project is in a small city in china’s eastern part, it is required to be designed in the traditional Chinese architectural style. The police bureau building, together with the government house, forms the administrative center of the city. The building area is 5000㎡.
Chinese Symbols Traditional architectural symbols can be extracted from the Hui-style architecture. Such as: closed layout, white wall and dark tiles, horsehead walls, slope roof, lunar gate, carved wooden doors and windows, etc.
Layout Concept The traditional Chinese architecture often use a “close” layout to embody the “harmony”. Thus this building use a C-glyph plan, to form a central square with government house.

-The Humanistic Comfortableness Creation in External Space of the Public Rental Housing Community -International Conference on Technology of Architecture and Structure, 2011 Sep.22 – 24, Xi’an, China Papers will be published on international journal: Advanced Material Research (EI COMPENDEX and ISTP INDEX) ABSTRACT This paper takes the exterior spaces of the PRH* community as the research object, and based on the humanistic comfortableness of the living-environmental comfortableness evaluation, by the analysis on the regional characteristics of the sandwich-layer crowd’s activities, and proposes the construction strategy to the exterior space design of the PRH community within the architecture design scope, to realize the creation of vitality and humanistic comfortableness in the PRH community. CONTENT 1 Introduction 2 The Humanistic Comfortableness in the Exterior Space of PRH Community 3 The Characteristics and Living Requirements of the Sandwichlayer Crowd 4 The humanistic comfortableness creation of the exterior space in the PRH community 5 Summary
1 Currently, as the PRH construction spreads into cities, the PRH gets into its short-term and huge-amount-built period and there are many problems such as: emphasize living quality but ignore the spirit demand , only focus on universality but ignore the pertinence and the limited capital distributes inappropriately. 2 The humanistic comfortableness in the exterior space which is discussed in this paper includes two meanings. One is the district’s significant factors, which contain the regional nature, historic culture, block images and the relationship between human and streets. The other is the factors about lifestyle, which refers to the community situation. 3 The sandwich-layer crowd refers to these people who can not afford a commodity house but also can not rent a low-rent house or buy an affordable house. For example, Chongqing’s sandwich-layer crowd includes the low-income local family, the university graduates who can not buy a house temporarily, the rural migrant workers with a stable income and special talents. In this part of the crowd, the low-income local families are the main residents who rent the PRH.
4 Strategies: 1. Limit a small-scale accessible space by the constructional function of plants. 2. Control the rhythm in paths and nodes to create the attraction of walking system. 3. Continue the bottom-interface and the sideinterface. 4. Encourage the residents participate in the maintenance and management of the PRH community to create a sense of belonging and identification.
5 A good external environment can be realized by creating a good humanistic atmosphere. By the pertinent analysis on the living requirement and activity characteristics of the sandwich-layer crowd, the exterior space of the PRH can be constructed effectively and reasonably, to realize the creation of the humanistic comfortableness and to consist an indemnificatory system which is of vigor, sequence and harmony.
*The PRH is the abbreviation for the Public Rental Housing; it is invested and supported by the government with the purpose of solving the sandwich-layer crowds’ housing problem.
