Touchstones Rochdale offers inspiring, interactive and fun learning opportunities that directly support the needs of the new National Curriculum. We’ve put together a selection of must-have workshops and resources to help you get organised for the busy year ahead. Whether you’re looking for new ideas or tried and tested favourites we have it covered. We pride ourselves on bringing to life the National Curriculum inspired by the borough’s amazing Arts and Museum collections. You’ll find a host of innovations throughout the brochure, including exclusive local history workshops, which you can’t find anywhere else. Last year over 15,000 enthusiastic learners participated with our service through workshops, outreach sessions, special projects and loans boxes. • School Workshops: our outstanding cross-curricular school workshops bring learning to life with original and replica artefacts, role play and strong pupil involvement. • Outreach Workshops: bring the magic and wonder of Touchstones Rochdale to your school with our hands-on curriculum linked outreach workshops. • Loan Boxes: our very popular Loan Box Service is free to borrowers within the Rochdale Borough. Each box contains original and replica artefacts and is designed to support study topics including history, geography, art and local studies. They encourage learners to use all their senses and help pupils to develop the important skill of drawing conclusions based on an examination of evidence, together with an understanding of the limitations and reliability of evidence. Furthermore, they are ideal for generating group and class discussion.

Art Gallery See a wide variety of exhibitions in the Art Gallery’s four gallery spaces. Gallery One is dedicated to exhibitions from the local community; Gallery Two shows the impressive permanent collection in a series of changing exhibitions; Galleries Three and Four show a range of temporary exhibitions focusing on contemporary art and craft. Exhibitions often feature hands-on activities for younger visitors, including a dedicated under 5s activity station in Gallery Two.

Local History Centre Discover the past for yourself – first hand. Whether you’re interested in local history, want to trace your family roots or just want to know a little more about the street you live on, we can help you find out more. Granny Su’s historical adventures make learning about the past fun for younger children. During these cross-curricular sessions your students will develop an awareness of the past; identify similarities and differences between the ways of life in different periods whilst improving their thinking and enquiry skills.

Washday Now and Then

Join Granny Su to discover how household activities have changed over the last 100 years. During this workshop pupils will learn about washing clothes in Victorian Britain. Dressed in authentic period costume, your students will learn how to do the washing using a dolly tub, rubbing board and carbolic soap. Toys Past and Present

This lively and fun-packed activity session explores changes within living memory by examining toys and games from the past and present. Everyone will have the opportunity to dress up in period costume as well as play with and discuss the difference between toys, how they work, and the materials from which they are made. Each child will make a simple toy to take back to school.

FLIGHT: From Feathers to Hot Air!

YR1

Come and experience man’s imaginary ‘flights of fancy’ and the exciting take off of the first balloon! Sort out the facts from the fiction surrounding mankind’s desire to fly and undertake simple tasks that will demonstrate how we eventually discovered the ability to take to the skies! In this session your class will make their own thermal snake, shape their own paper feather and make a balloon ‘fly’ by harnessing the power of hot air. This is a great introduction to the history and science of flight.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert popularised the traditions we associate with Christmas today - the tree, the Christmas cards, the presents and even the Christmas pudding. They made Christmas a festival for the whole family and any gathering was a good excuse to play games together. In this workshop your class will learn traditional parlour games and also play with toys and board games from the period. Each child will dress as a Victorian, sit around our beautifully decorated hearth and tree and make a Christmas card and scented pomander to take away. “Very relevant to the topic they are learning about. Ancient Egypt: Me & My Mummy!

In this workshop pupils will learn about the achievements of one of the earliest civilisations: Ancient Egypt. Meet our costumed facilitator and learn how and why the Egyptians practiced mummification. Examine accurate replica artefacts, like the infamous ‘brain hook’, natron salt and a set of canopic jars. Learn how amulets were used to protect the body from evil spirits and watch in awe as we ‘act out’ the fascinating stages of mummification on three daring pupils from your class before making a mini mummy to take away. This is an absolutely brilliant workshop which brings to life many topics on the theme of Ancient Egypt.

The Museum’s Egyptology collection has inspired this truly exciting, interactive fun learning experience which children will remember for a lifetime. The session includes; performance, role-play, music, authentic smells, object handling, movement and dance. Our costumed facilitator will perform in your classroom as excitable Annie or Arnold, hot from a recent overseas tour of 1920s Egypt with the great archaeologist Sir William Flinders Petrie. In this session children will learn about how and what treasures were unearthed. They will also act out a fascinating myth from Ancient Egypt to discover more about life in the past.

Learn about the achievements of Ancient Greek civilisation including: democracy, architecture and theatre. Act out an ancient myth and take part in a live debate. Discuss and agree the price of figs and the sentencing of a prolific criminal who just happens to be an unsuspecting volunteer from your class! This is a fantastic interactive session and the costumed facilitator really helps to bring to life ancient history through lots of role-play activities. Our facilitator, dressed in authentic costume, will lead this energetic performance putting your children through their physical paces to learn more about life in Ancient Greece and its influence on the western world. Travel back in time to 500 B.C. to take part in the original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece! Roman Invasion

Cost: £63 (1hr 30mins) Dates: Workshops available throughout the year Time: 10am – 11.30am & 1pm – 2.30pm Learn about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain. Each child will dress in Roman costume during this exciting and fun filled role-play session. Following the strict instructions of Emperor Hadrian, learn how to march like a real Roman soldier and find out why marching was so important to their army. See how the North West changed following the Roman invasion of Britannia in 43AD and how the local Celts fared. Hear about typical Roman food, the warm and relaxing bathhouse and the bizarre Roman toilet habits (watch out for the toilet sponge - the Roman equivalent of toilet paper)! "Excellent start to the topic which grabbed children's attention. Currently covering topic in school and it covered a wide range of key skills from the curriculum. Pupils will learn how the Romans conquered England, help Hadrian build his defensive wall and find out what it took to be a soldier in the Roman army. Working in teams your pupils will recreate armour, using just newspaper, sticky tape and lots of imagination! "This workshop was fun and engaging. Anglo-Saxon Attack!

Dressed in authentic costume children will be divided into four kingdoms before competing against each other in a traditional Anglo-Saxon sport. Learn about the importance of storytelling in Anglo-Saxon culture and help the invader act out the grizzly legend of Beowulf the Brave. Discover the gory depths of the Anglo-Saxon’s crime and punishment laws as you investigate who stole the Saxon cows and debate what punishment they should receive. “Perfect! Your pupils will become kings for the day, take part in traditional Saxon games and play their part in the gruesome tale of Godwin’s downfall by helping to tell the story of Beowulf. Pupils will learn about Saxon crime and punishment; but who will have to pay the price for crimes committed in the classroom? Find out in our ‘brutal’ crime and punishment game! It is 12000BC and Britain is beginning to warm after the Ice Age. We will visit the replica cave and discuss what life would have been like for the Neolithic hunter-gathers. Find out how Stone Age artists used the colours of the soils, minerals and other natural materials to produce pictures of the animals and shapes that were important to them striking images that still survive today to give us a tantalising glimpse into the lives of pre-historic Britain. Finally, each child will use pre-historic techniques to make their own pot like the ones used by early farmers to store food. "They were fully engaged, loved doing art and craft. What items would have been 'essential' to Stone Age man? What would your 21st century class not want to live without? Explore the materials and techniques available to the Stone Age people and discover how they survived and recorded their way of life through their paintings. Your class will learn new painting techniques making use of the Stone Age colour palette to create their own 'cave painting'. Working with our costumed facilitator pupils will dress up in Viking costume and ‘set sail’ from Norway to England in search of new lands. Discover why they faced resistance from Alfred the Great and Athelstan, how they lived, what they believed in as well as why and how they travelled. Dressed in authentic waistcoats and pinafores from the period your class will experience the rules and regulation as set by the costumed facilitator to explore a typical school day from the late 1880s. Pupils will follow a timetable based on the 3Rs under the watchful eye of Mr or Miss Grimm, the schoolteacher. This is a realistic theatrical performance based on lessons from the period and designed to help your children understand what life was really like for a child in Victorian England. Nations, communities and individuals of all ages across the world continue to come together to mark, commemorate and remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died. WWI: Life in the First World War

The First World War was a significant turning point in British history. During this interactive workshop your pupils will use role-play to act out the lives of the Lords, an ordinary family who live in Rochdale, from 1914 to 1918. Pupils will learn about: the causes of the First World War; how the Government used propaganda posters to encourage men to enlist; what life was like as a Tommy in the trenches at the front; about the Home Front including the changing role of women; the role animals played in the war and why we commemorate 11th November. “All of it exceeded our expectations; the children were actively involved throughout the session. They were so disappointed when the session ended. Very appropriate, subject matter consolidated learning that had taken place in the classroom. The First World War was a global event which changed the world we live in today. The national call to arms roused local communities up and down the country affecting every corner of Britain. This WWI Gallipoli Experience Day looks at Rochdale’s experience both on the home front and on the battlefield in Gallipoli, Turkey, where many local men lost their lives. The two complementary workshops allow an in-depth examination of a world event on local history giving your children a chance to understand why ‘we will remember them’.

What did Mother do during the day while Father was away? What were children expected to do towards the war effort? Your students will follow the story of Rochdale’s Schofield family from happier times in pre-1939 Britain to the drastic changes which affected them all in wartime. This is a lively hands-on session with lots of role-play and interaction which make it a fantastic introduction to WWII and Remembrance Day topics. WWII: A Wartime Christmas

Cost: £63 (1hr 30mins) Dates: November and December 2014 Time: 10am – 11.30am & 1pm – 2.30pm Children will learn how rationing affected Christmas celebrations during the Second World War; from the food that people ate, the ways that they cooked it, to the presents that they gave to their loved ones. The class will be split into two teams which will compete against each other to decorate a ‘bomb shelter’ using a traditional ‘goose-feather Christmas tree’, homemade paper chains created by the children and other festive trimmings. We will then put the decorated shelters to use as the Air Raid Siren warns us of an impending attack. Each child will also wear a replica gas mask and will learn about the effects of air raids on the people of wartime Britain.

Bring history topics to life in the classroom through stop-motion animation!

Stop motion animation is the process of joining together a series of still images into one continuous film. Through this one-day workshop your pupils will learn how to use basic equipment to storyboard their films, animate drawings and even record sound effects! Choose any significant historic event or well-known figure as your inspiration and then decide with the facilitator which key feature to animate. Working in small teams each group will produce a different aspect of the narrative which when viewed together will tell the complete sequence of events. Behind-the-scenes editing will bring clips together in one DVD animation. Films can then be uploaded to You Tube to enable you to share your work with other classes, parents and the wider community.

The History of Rochdale in 90 Minutes! (Guided Tour)

Our popular guided walk-and-talk takes your class on a magical history tour to uncover how several aspects of national history are reflected in Rochdale’s town centre. Did you know that Rochdale’s recorded history began in 1086 with an entry in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book or that St Chad’s Church is built on Anglo-Saxon foundations or that there is a rare example of a medieval bridge in the town centre? This tour includes the chance to see and put into context significant historic buildings found close to the location of the river including the magnificent Town Hall built by our 19th century forebears. Children will also discover through tangible evidence aspects of national history reflected in our local townscape. This 90 minute session also includes a visit to the relevant Museum displays at Touchstones Rochdale to help support and strengthen your children’s learning. At Touchstones Rochdale, children will take part in a lively role-play session with our facilitator dressed in an authentic costume from the Victorian Era. Children will also dress up, learn to weigh dry foodstuffs on old fashioned scales, wrap goods using brown paper and record their transactions using dip pen and ink. 1. Thomas Livsey - Tackling the Trade

Back in Victorian Rochdale, Thomas Livsey is unhappy with how adults and children are being treated in the mills and wants to improve their working conditions. Find out about dangerous chemicals, explosions and states of matter (liquids to solids) commonly seen in the Industrial Revolution and help Thomas to decide how he can make the science of the workplace safer. 2. Roger Fenton - Nurses that Led the Way

Local man Roger Fenton was commissioned by Queen Victoria and the War Minister to take pictures of “People and Scenes of Historical Value” in the Crimea. He was one of the first war photographers who heard directly the tales of Florence Nightingale who revolutionised medicine by simply washing her hands and Mary Seacole who travelled from Jamaica to Russia to challenge racism. To remind pupils of these great efforts in health care and medicine, pupils will take away their own hand crafted commemorative peg doll nurse or soldier.

3. George Caley - Plant Hunter of the Past

George Caley grew up in Middleton in the early 1880s and was fascinated by the lifecycle of plants. In this workshop your pupils’ will help George identify different plants in Broadfield Park, find out what they need to survive and also plant a seed each to take home to grow. This character-led workshop will allow pupils to gain understanding of plants and the story of local man, George Caley who went on to work at Kew Gardens, London and St. Vincent’s Botanic Gardens in the West Indies.

Gracie Fields is one of Rochdale’s most celebrated actresses and entertainers but what made Gracie and her music so special? Your pupils will explore Gracie’s life from humble beginnings above a chip shop and working in Rochdale’s mills to life as a film star and famed Dame who entertained troops during WWII. Pupils will also hear about Thomas Edison’s first music player and see the technology used to play Gracie’s records in the 1930s compared to today. Pupils will take part in song, dance and a little drama to understand the life of ‘Our Gracie’.

Pupils will dress up as Pioneers and will complete a numeracy-based activity weighing some of the foods the Pioneers sold. Finally they will enjoy a play experience in a replica shop complete with mini shopping trolleys and baskets, illustrating how shopping changed from counter-service to self-service. To begin, pupils will put on a pair of conservation gloves and take part in an object handling session using real and replica artefacts linked to your chosen theme. During this interactive investigation our new ‘curatorial assistants’ will describe and research the artefacts; photograph the objects and write object labels. They will learn how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources. Next, your class will be taken on a tour of the Museum Store. They will learn how we care for the borough’s historic collections and extra time will be spent examining in more detail objects from your chosen theme. Drawings of the artefacts will be assembled into a collaborative display to take back to your classroom as a souvenir of your visit.

A Local History Study: Rochdale and the Industrial Revolution Rochdale rose to prominence during the Victorian period as a major mill town and centre of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. During this workshop, pupils will learn about the hard lives of many Victorian children from Rochdale who grew up working in the textile mills. They will examine a range of museum artefacts including industrial machinery, tipple tins and the personal treasures of wealthy mill owners.

In this workshop the science enabler will set the class an engineering design task to construct a small scale version of Rochdale Bridge using the popular K’nex kits. Children will work in small groups and during the process develop skills in communication, team working and problem solving which will increase their individual self-confidence. Pupils will create their own animal - thinking about where it lives, what it eats, who eats it, how it protects itself - illustrating why it has evolved to be so well adapted to its environment.

The Roch and its many tributaries are characteristic features of Rochdale’s landscape. The local importance of rivers is seen in their influence on the lives of people and wildlife of the area. From supplying the freshwater we drink to driving the wheels of industry, rivers are a vital part of our environment.

Rivers & History - Revealing the Roch A fascinating guided walk looking at the river which gave Rochdale its name. This workshop focuses on significant historical events, people and places in the locality and should inspire pupil’s curiosity to know more about the River Roch and its importance to the area. Using archive maps and photographs, children will see how Rochdale grew dramatically from a medieval market town to one of the world’s first industrialised towns. Hidden secrets will be uncovered about The Esplanade and Town Centre revealing what it was like to live in Rochdale in the past. Children will then create an eco-timeline to capture their thoughts for working towards a better and more sustainable future.

Through poetry, stories and rhymes Can O’ Worms storytelling will reveal the hidden habitats of the River Roch. In the last 100 years the local river has transformed from little more than an open sewer to a wonderful wildlife haven attracting many different species. Pupils will discover the secrets of the bird life that call the river, in the centre of our town, their home. Along the way, the words discovered and used by the children will be crafted into a memorable poem as durable as the river itself.

Stone Age Cave Painting & Pottery

It is 12000BC and Britain is beginning to warm after the Ice Age. Sit around the fire in our replica cave and discuss what life would have been like for the Neolithic hunter-gathers. Find out how Stone Age artists used the colours of the soils, minerals and other natural materials to produce pictures of the animals and shapes that were important to them - striking images that still survive today to give us a tantalising glimpse into the lives of pre-historic Britain. MEET THE FACILITATORS Alison Cooper Alison graduated from De Montfort University, Leicester with a degree in Arts Management and has since worked as a freelance community artist for a number of galleries, museums and community organisations. A keen interest in textiles, craft, heritage, animation and music means she is able to deliver a wide range of mixed and multimedia workshops. Alison works part time for the Borough’s Arts & Heritage Service and shares her expert knowledge about the collections through her workshops. As a talented musician, Alison writes, records and performs her own music as well as through collaborative projects with other musicians. Alison also works directly with schools as a freelancer to deliver bespoke workshops to fit curriculum needs: alison.arts@yahoo.co.uk

Su Hudson Su studied at Manchester Polytechnic in the 1980s and gained a BA (Hons) in 3D Design (wood, ceramics, metal and glass). She completed an in-service P.G.C.E. in the 1990s and has taught art and ceramics to adults and children in various establishments throughout the country ever since. She sells her own sculptural ceramics through art markets, craft shows, ceramic festivals and galleries and is planning to teach ceramics from her own studio in the future.

Cat Jessop After graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in Arts Education Cat started her own business as a freelance arts facilitator specialising in devising and delivering visual arts and role-play workshops. Cat has worked extensively in the cultural sector to support the delivery of formal learning using arts and heritage to stimulate and engage children and young people to help them achieve excellence. Cat has delivered workshops for schools with Touchstones Rochdale for several years; she just loves dressing up in period costume! When Cat isn’t dressed-to-impress as a historic character, she creates illustrations and also ‘visual minutes’ (communicating discussions and meetings through animated pictures) for different organisations across the North West.

Daniel Jessop Since graduating from Aberystwyth University Daniel has worked in a variety of museums and heritage sites and enjoys bringing the past to life. He has worked for organisations including English Heritage, The Fusilier Museum in Bury and Sheffield Industrial Museum Trust. He is always keen to share his skills of engaging a range of ages to make learning fun and accessible to all.

Vicky Lomax (Pocket Puppet Theatre) Since graduating from Central School of Speech and Drama with a BA (Hons) in Puppetry and Costume Design, Vicky has worked throughout the North West of England, in partnership with a wide range of arts organisations, community groups and schools to create tailor made, creative puppetry and visual arts programmes for children and adults of all abilities and backgrounds. She also makes puppets and props for commission and for use with her own performances. Vicky uses puppetry and stories as a tool to educate whilst offering fun, creative experiences for all. She also incorporates literacy and numeracy into the puppetry workshops that she develops for schools, with the use of rhymes, movement and discussion.

For the past decade Ian has delivered history-themed workshops to thousands of children in museums and primary schools across the North West. A specialist historical role-player, he adopts the roles of various fascinating characters in order to educate, inspire and amuse his audiences. He is the founder of “Ian Tully’s Mobile Museum” which delivers workshops in schools in his native Lancashire and he is a well-known and respected figure in his chosen industry. Despite a hectic and varied schedule including TV appearances, Ian is always keen to bring his inimitable workshops to Touchstones.

Judy Alderson Graduating from Sheffield University with a BSc (Hons) in Archaeology and Bangor University with a PG diploma in Countryside Management, Judy followed a career in wildlife conservation and countryside management. Working as a Countryside Ranger at Hollingworth Lake since 2002, she continues to work as a ranger part time alongside being a co–founder of NatureEd and freelance Level 3 Forest School practitioner in Calderdale.

Jude Murray

MEET THE FACILITATORS

Working together with Rochdale Council, NatureEd is based at Hollingworth Lake delivering environmental activities across the Borough.

A Zoology graduate from Nottingham University and more recently qualified as a Level 3 Forest School Practitioner, Jude began teaching practical conservation skills with BTCV before moving into environmental education as a Countryside Ranger at Hollingworth Lake. A co-founder of NatureEd, she also works freelance and as a sessional tutor in Oldham.

Ray Stearn (Can O’ Worms Storytelling) Ray Stearn is well known in the borough as the Children’s Librarian. You may not know that he was also a voluntary countryside ranger with Calderdale Council for over 20 years. He is also the person behind Can Of Worms Storytelling. Stepping from under the safety blanket of being the ‘Children’s Librarian’ and becoming a storyteller, Ray felt he was opening a Can O’ Worms and the name stuck. Ray has been telling stories in libraries and schools for children for many years with the aim of encouraging children to enjoy experiencing stories and discover the thrill of reading for enjoyment.

STEM Greater Manchester Touchstones science sessions are led by staff from SETPOINT Greater Manchester – The Greater Manchester STEM Centre. The organisation is a registered charity (No: 1040251) and has existed for over 20 years: regular presenters are Paul Titchmarsh, Rik Whittaker and David Ward. They have together over 100 years of experience working in schools, universities and businesses. Through their sessions they show their passion and interest in science and engineering using the many industrial and social artefacts from the Museum collection. Each session is linked into aspects of the National Curriculum tailored to the ability of the participants. For each session there is an introduction, an active visit to the display areas and practical handson investigations in the Education Studio.

Anne Thomas Anne has been a registered Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the Borough of Rochdale for nearly 30 years. Although born in the Borough, Anne moved to the United States where she received her formative education. Prior to her retirement, Anne worked in the Tourist Information Centre in Rochdale for 17 years where she gained an NVQ Level 3 in Customer Service. Anne gives guided walks and talks as part of the advertised Blue Badge Guide programme which she delivers to all age groups on the heritage of Rochdale. Anne particularly enjoys showing off the centre of Rochdale as it’s her very own home town!

Norman Warwick (Just Poets) Norman is widely known as a writer and broadcaster of the All Across the Arts page in three local newspapers and in a radio programme of the same name. He designs and delivers dynamic, fun-packed, literacy-based sessions including elements of drama, performance, poetry and song, often working in collaboration with dancers, circus artists, visual artists, and musicians. Norman served as Master of Ceremonies at Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival 2014. LOAN BOX SERVICE

Our very popular Loan Box Service is free to borrowers within the Rochdale Borough. We do however charge a nominal fee of £20 for schools and groups from outside the borough. Each box contains original and replica artefacts and is designed to support study topics including history, geography, art, local studies, citizenship and ecology. Each loan is for two weeks and boxes can only be booked one term in advance. As storage for the boxes is limited we try to maximise the number of times any one box can be loaned to meet the demand. Created in a partnership between the Rochdale Pioneers Museum and the Arts & Heritage Service this resource contains both original and replica Victorian objects to help you recreate the first successful co-operative store. Box includes: costume, weighing scales, butter pats and co-operative dividend tokens.

Demonstrate your own Victorian washday in the classroom. Inside the dolly tub you will find many items including: apron, mop cap, tongs, flat iron, slate, clogs and apron, washboard, posser, flat iron, donkey stone and carbolic soap.

Revealing the River Roch – A Local Chronology

Light & Lighting This box contains examples of different types and methods of lighting including: Roman and Viking oil lamps, Tudor rushlight, Victorian candleholder and a WWII cycle lamp designed for use during the blackout.

Slavery Resource Display Discover how slavery fuelled the Industrial Revolution and the part Rochdale played in abolishing slavery in America. This substantive resource explores the history of slavery from a local perspective and includes replica objects for handling; a sugar cone and cutters, manacles as worn by slaves, dried cotton plant and a tobacco twist. This resource comprises: a DVD, pop-up banners, a replica of a large painting featuring a slave serving tea at a grand house in Rochdale and a 3D life size copy of the famous inscribed flour barrel on display at Touchstones.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS Jarred: Ceramics from the Collection Heritage Gallery 23 May 2015 – 9 April 2016 Our homes are filled with ceramics. From teapots to tiles, baking bowls to bricks, prized ornaments to studio pieces, this exhibition celebrates their diversity. Jarred looks at how ceramics help us in our everyday lives, telling their story from 4000BC to the present day looking at how ceramics help us in our everyday lives. Discover how ceramics have been used in social and religious rituals and to commemorate events, places or people. Explore the decorative styles that have influenced their design. Learn how ceramics were produced locally on an industrial scale to manufacture Lancashire’s famous red bricks. Ancient Roman and Egyptian pottery as well as Chinese and English porcelain can be seen in the display cases. Highlights include an Ancient Greek vase attributed to the Swing Painter as well as new acquisitions by contemporary ceramists Paul Scott and Ikuko Iwamoto. Younger visitors can follow the White Rabbit and join Alice at the Mad Hatter’s tea party as well as laugh out loud at the tale of the naughty school boy and a tippler toilet.

Homespun Traditions Gallery Two 21 March 2015 – 5 March 2016 Showcasing works from the borough’s art collection, this exhibition looks at how traditional crafts and domestic life has been represented in art. Exploring the themes of craftsmanship and the homemade, modern craft pieces are shown alongside intriguing objects from the Museum collections and a range of historic artworks that depict our fine cottage industries. Surprising and diverse examples of local and British craft in art is illustrated among others by Frederick William Jackson, printer and engraver John O’Connor, Edward Stott and eminent folk artist Tim Bobbin. Single outreach workshops delivered in school cost £150 (unless otherwise stated). Multiples of outreach sessions, if booked for the same day, are discounted. (Please note: There is an additional travel cost of 50pence per mile for outreach sessions booked by schools located outside of the borough of Rochdale. Please contact the Education team to confirm complete price). Your school will be invoiced after the date of your workshop and within the term the session takes place. Full payment is due within the period specified.

Self-Guided Visits

Workshops at Touchstones Rochdale

There are no charges for booking a self-guided visit as entry to our building is free. Please note: Booked groups have priority in display areas. It may be difficult to accommodate your class if you haven’t booked in advance.

If you have to cancel your booked session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 or 924938 (TuesFri) or 01706 641085 if you are calling on a Monday. • From the moment we take your booking we start to incur costs. So if you cancel we unfortunately have to make a charge and the later the cancellation the greater the cost. We require at least four weeks’ notice of a cancellation to enable us to reallocate your session. If you do not contact us, or we are unable to refill the session, Touchstones Rochdale reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee covering the cost of your booked session. We are a not-for-profit organisation and fees charged cover the freelance facilitator and admin costs incurred. Therefore sufficient notice from you will hopefully allow a facilitator to secure alternative work elsewhere. An administration cost of £10 is liable on any other cancellation reported outside of the four week deadline where a booking has already been processed by the finance team. •In the rare instance that we should ever have to cancel your workshop at Touchstones Rochdale on the day the workshop is due, we promise to refund you in full (including the cost of any coach you may have pre-booked where the coach company will not give you a full refund) and we will also offer you a replacement workshop without charge.

Lunch Facilities We may be able to provide you with space in which to eat your packed lunch. Please make this request at the time of booking so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Risk Assessment

Outreach Workshops at School

Touchstones Rochdale is a low risk environment and injuries to visitors are very rare. We can provide you with a generic risk assessment for self-guided visits and school workshops which take place within our building. However, it is the responsibility of individual teachers and leaders to visit the site in order to conduct risk assessments that are specific to their group and that fulfil their policy requirements.

If you have to cancel your booked outreach session, please telephone the Education Team immediately on 01706 924931 or 924938 (Tues-Fri) or 01706 641085 if you are calling on a Monday. • Schools who cancel outright on the day of the workshop or within four weeks of the date of the workshop will be obliged to pay the full cost of the workshop. • Please give as much notice as possible should you wish to reschedule a date – a minimum of four weeks is required. • Should a freelancer unfortunately not be able to deliver your session due to unforeseen circumstances, we will immediately organise an alternative date by mutual agreement. Access Touchstones Rochdale is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs with a lift to reach the Galleries on the first floor. There is level access throughout the display areas and the adapted toilet is located in the foyer. There is on-street parking immediately outside the venue for Blue Badge holders (alongside the short-stay parking bays).
