Philip Noakes is a highly acclaimed artist and craftsman, renowned for his exceptional work as a contemporary jeweller, goldsmith and silversmith. Linton & Kay Galleries are honoured to host his latest exhibition, "Sculptural Silver" at their new gallery space in Cottesloe.
Demonstrating a long history of mastered skills in jewellery making Noakes forms exquisite large objects and vessels from flat sheets of silver and other precious metals for this exhibition. He shapes classic forms, imbuing them with an energy that often makes them appear weightless. He then adds unique textures to the surfaces through techniques such as hammering, flame treating and oxidising.
Philip Noakes has earned enviable recognition for the unique designs and unsurpassed quality of his work both in Australia and overseas. Studying in London before teaching and working in Sydney and Perth, he now operates his studio in Western Australia. His works have been extensively displayed and collected both nationally and internationally and can be found in important public collections and museums such as the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, the University of Western Australia Collection in Perth, the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, and The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (Powerhouse Museum) in Sydney.
In 2016 Philip was conferred as a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, United Kingdom the most prestigious accolade of all and the only silversmith in Australia to achieve this honour.
“My latest body of work encompasses the classical bowl form, combining traditional skills with modern fabrication techniques and sculptural aesthetics. My practice responds to the changing environment in which I find myself and through exploration of a diverse array of options, both artistic and practical. I find myself reimagining the world I inhabit unconstrained by history but, at the same time, using it to initiate new projects and explore innovative techniques. Silversmithing remains my passion and I embrace the challenge of designing and creating beautiful objects while keeping abreast of recent technology and innovations, and using history as my reference bank to invigorate my creativity and experimentation.”
