The target area is located in the northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing near a Buddhist temple. Blending traditional and modern features to coordinate with the target area’s surrounding context was a key goal of the project.

Users’ Needs This building will be used by different people with different needs. Who are the users? What are they looking for in this place? What functions do they need? Through research (what kind of research - be specific!) and informational interviews, I investigated these questions and identified three groups:

MORDEN & ANCIENT ELEMENTS MIXING Fusion of Modern and Esay to find
Ancient Elements
The red old bricks are used in a wide range to harmonious with around buildings, and these red bricks and glass bricks combine together in harmonious point out we hope the traditional and modern elements can develop together. Red steel was chosen as the material of the entrance door to echo the ancient buildings.
Glass brick was chosen as the material for part of the wall because people can see inside the space roughly, which inspires them to walk inside.
WAYFINDING
Our target area is home to an eclectic mix of small businesses, institutions, offices, and temporary housing. Effective wayfinding serves both residents and visitors. Wayfinding signage area should also designate the patchwork of different area. Wayfinding signs can be categorized into three different types based on their location, mounted on the wall, lay on the ground and hung at the entrance of Hu-tong.

Signs placed far from target area should be large in size and show the distance and direction. installation was planned on walls. Installing large wayfinding signs near the bus stations and subway will also help to people to get there. Ground wayfinding signs should be located nearby the building. This signage will be installed on the ground and give people clearer direction. The distance and where people should turn left or right will be clearly labeled. The last wayfinding signal will be installed in the entrance of Hu-Tong, which will hang out into the street to ensure people do not overlook it.

Due to this is a small area but require multiple using, we use the main space as the huge open space with some special equipment. Plain Open Space

PLAIN OPEN SPACE Users can put anything they want. The use of space can be changed by users’ need. If they want to have a party, they can put a temporary bar with some drinks. When no one rent this space, it can be the information center which introduce the history of Beijing. HUGE FOLDING TABLE The table can be put in the floor. This simple table has so many possibilities. Artists can put and show their works on the table. It is a good place for people who want to meet there, discuss their work or just chatting. Moreover, the craftsmen can teach people their skills in this table. SCREEN FOR PROJECTOR People who want to take a lecture can show their PowerPoint in the projector. For residents’ recreation using, it can be used as movie projector. We want to show “less is more” in this space. Without any equipment, people can have the most idea about the space using.

Electronic Gallery
The first rendering is the showing center. Artwork can be hung from the rafters. When people do not want to show these pictures, they can put these paintings away. The following two renderings show what the corridor looks like. We planned to install six moveable projector screens in corridor. People can go through (the building) by this corridor. When the projectors are set up to all face one side (2nd rendering), they can form a huge screen to play broadcast-quality video and show visitors the history of this area. This corridor also can be a “gallery”. When the projector screens are put on different sides of the corridor, each screen can project local photography, event information, and introductions to the area’s traditions. When visitor go through, they get the chance to know more about the area.

We want to make this place as a recreational center and communicate center. We considered residents might want to read a book or chat with their friends here, they need private space. Moreover, when an artist rents this building and wants to prepare his/ her the show, he/she might work very late. If we create a temporary bedroom and then people can stay here for the night, this will save artist’s time and make them put more attention in their working. Therefore, we build second as a private space. The above rendering shows the private space in north side. People can have a private conversation or enjoy their own relative-close space here. The below rendering shows temporary bedroom, a small space which can fit a twin-size bed. People who rent this building is welcome to stay here during the night or just for rest.

Since the target building is located in the Hu-tong, high building density causes insufficient light. We decided to use glass as the roof material to increase interior natural-illumination.

The most narrow space in this building is the stairs. We figured out the best width for people to use.

Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy
Project Background Castiglion Fiorentino, a small mountain town located in Italy which has a strong aging population problem. We were looking for transformation this town into a tourist attractions which can attract more young people back to here and activity the local economic.

Users’ Needs Through the survey of town, we found Castinglion Fiorentino was devastated during World War II, economic sector was agriculture. However, agriculture on its own can hardly develop a local economy. Castinglion Fiorentino has more than a thousand-year-old history which is attractive. People who want to have a traditional Italian experience will travel here. Therefore, we want to improve this town as a visitor friendly place.

The design team added a new bus station at the entrance of this small town to convince visitors to travel here. The town’s facture was used as the basic “bricks” to form the bus station. Each brick is a thumbnail block of the town; visitors will see this town preview when they step out of the bus. The shape of way-finding signals is the outline of the town. Except the wayfinding arrow, these boards will contain some basic place introduction to make visitors know more about this place.

The abandoned houses were changing into utility rooms by renovating. We use small piece of town’s factors as the entrance to attract visitor to explore these areas. We also put some benches behind these entrance factors to provide a rest space for people.

Based on the town’s factors, we designed some outdoor resting areas. People are welcome to sit here and enjoy the fresh air. The ground glass ceiling can keep the rain off in bad weather and the sun off in good. We designed a new central plaza in Santa Chiara, a communication and learning center for students from China and America. Based on the research we did, Santa Chiara is a great communication place for visitors and residents because its location is nearby the south town entrance and the communication center. This central plaza included some small pools which in the shape of town factors.

Realize Parsons Columbus, Ohio, US Project Background Parsons Avenue has a long tradition of community activism and planning. While most of these plans have never left the bookshelves after their creation, they are a concrete representation of the investment local organizations and residents have in their community. We hope our plan can help shape the future of the Parsons Avenue corridor.

Due to the problems that Parsons Avenue has, we decided to improve it to make it more of a unique, inclusive, and resilient corridor. Create a complete, walkable commercial corridor that complements current retail; respectful to the past, present, and future of the South Side to keep the history of Parsons Avenue, and bring the diverse community together and foster opportunities for residents to develop skills. · Streets with Character

POSITION ANALYSIS
This area remained residential and consisted of greenfields until industrialization in the early 1900s. Industrialization created opportunity, leading to an influx of immigrants. In the 1960s manufacturing jobs began to decline, causing many residents to leave the area for the Central Ohio suburbs. This resulted in commercial businesses moving or closing altogether. The stressed economy led to low quality housing units and commercial properties. 17

The main goal of our project is to enhance this existing identity and create a streetscape that draws both local residents as well as visitors back to the avenue. Creating a cohesive urban design begins by attending to the architectural fabric of the street. FIRST RENDERING From Parsons Avenue west into the adjacent residential areas. Promote a permeable interface that allows people to feel welcome in this space. - Rehabilitation commerical buildings situated - Refreshed landscaping

SECOND RENDERING Envision a roriented Kroger lined up against Goethe Avenue to push the building facade closer to Parsons. This would result in a more inviting atmosphere and could increase business. We also propose the creation of: - A gateway to Kroger from the sidewalk in between Moler and Sheldon Street - Green space - Water feature or a Kroger sign - Picnic tables and benches THIRD RENDERING Bound by Woodruff Avenue to the north and Marion Avenue to the south. Ronud this street, people are older and poorer than the City of Columbus as a whole on average. - Improve and adding crosswalks - Improve green space connectivity - Refreshing the buildings facade 19

CROSSWALK Diverse Community
Pursuing a series of creative crosswalks that are placed strategically along Parsons Avenue will increase pedestrian safety and create a vibrant and visually appealing place to be. Parsons Avenue has a number of identifying landmarks that lend themselves to neighboring crosswalks to reflect these important places on the streets.
To be approved by the City of Columbus, crosswalks must be painted with nonreflective road paint. The design must be drawn within the bars of the crosswalk with no paint overtop of the standard reflective paint laid by the city, and may not feature the color white. Beyond these set of regulations, Columbus will approve or tweak a design in order to allow the physical
painting procedure to begin. The City of Columbus has set a goal to repave Parsons Avenue by October of 2017. The ideal time to institute crosswalk art is immediately after a road has been freshly paved.

BIKE LANE Well designed Bikeway
Along Parsons Avenue, cyclists are often seen riding on the sidewalk, because it is the only way to navigate without the risk of being hit by a vehicle. However, the narrow sidewalk width cannot safely accommodate both pedestrians and bicyclists. Ideally, separated bicycle lanes on Parsons Avenue would run in both directions. Unfortunately, Parsons Avenue is relatively narrow, and given its function as a commercial corridor, on-street parking is a valued commodity. The City’s new road plan for Parsons does not include on-street separated bike lanes.
Our plan calls for the reuse of an Goethe Alley as a bikeway, to better serve cyclists and pedestrians on the South Side. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to transform Goethe Alley, which runs parallel to Parsons Ave on its west side, into a two-way bicycle thoroughfare. As funding becomes available, Goethe Alley can be connected to other bicycle paths in the Columbus area.
