TEXT2427 Technical Design Innovation
Boot Camp for your subject area
Knit and weave samples attracted huge interest and admiration from buyers at indigo.
Work from the technical block will be going to Paris.
Summer project
Review of Degree Show, New Designers Visual Research – Structure and Surface Treasures Book Checks and Stripes journal
Experimental and innovative‌‌
Also, be thorough and consistent and methodical.
In this module you will all the basic intermediate skills required for years 2 & 3.
It is what you learn by yourself that we don’t teach you, will be you individual.
To be successful you must strive to be individual through creative process and thinking.
TEXT2427 Design brief: Structure and Surface Start Date: Week 1 Submission Date: Week 9
Brief: Design and make a collection of contemporary knitted or woven fabrics focussing on innovative structures and surfaces using a black and white colour palette.
Visual Research
Using your summer work as a starting point, develop a body of visual research that focuses on structure, texture, repeat forms, light and opacity. Keep your colour black and white to enable you to focus on structure and surface. You may use the odd highlight of colour if needed to highlight a texture.
Visual Research
Develop a body of inspirational art work from which to interpret knit or weave ideas. Use a variety of materials to create surface interest and threedimensional form.
Using the overall theme of ‘Contrasts and Opposites’ investigate opposing words as a starting point; e.g. Perfect/Imperfect, Old/New, Matt/Shine, Order/Chaos, Singular/Plural, Textured/Smooth, Wet/Dry, Simplistic/Complex, Convex/Concave. Alternatively, you may also like to consider keywords that involve contrasts and opposites such as; Oxymoron, Contradiction, Dualism, Paradox, Juxtaposition.
• You will need to produce a body of visual research including; • Sketchbook • Produce a body of both secondary and original primary research. • Collect images, fabric swatches, yarn cuttings, take photographs and produce drawings/interpretations of interesting and innovative surfaces and structures. Consider, texture, three dimensional qualities, repeat, close up and aerial views etc.
• A Body of Drawings • Develop a body of drawings based on your sketchbook research. • The drawings can include stitch, mark making, collage, 3D elements etc. Consider scale, composition and proportion. Consider working on a variety of materials – remember surface interest and texture is the focus. • Attention should be paid to composition, proportion and placement. Think of them as Artworks.
• Fabric experimentation • Source relevant yarns and keep a yarn journal (This should be maintained throughout the year for both knit and weave projects).
• Explore experimental techniques to create a range of swatches for further development. You can explore finishing and embellishment if you wish.
•Design development and conclusions •Develop your ideas into a collection of a least 6 designs for knit or 4 designs for Weave.
