THE University

OUR HISTORY Texas A&M University-Commerce began as East Texas Normal College in 1889 when founder William Leonidas Mayo opened the doors to a one-building campus in Cooper. His creed, which continues today, was “ceaseless industry, fearless investigation, unfettered thought, and unselfish service to others.” The institution’s history of dynamic change began in 1894 when “Mayo’s College” moved to Commerce. The State of Texas took over the campus in 1917 and the name was changed to East Texas State Normal College. In 1923, the school was renamed East Texas State Teachers College. The graduate program was added in 1935, and in 1957 the Legislature, recognizing that the purpose of the institution had broadened from teacher education, changed the name to East Texas State College. Following inauguration of the first doctoral program in 1962, the name was changed to East Texas State University. In 1996, the institution entered The Texas A&M University System and became Texas A&M University-Commerce. Today, on the Commerce campus, the Metroplex Center, the Universities Center at Dallas, Navarro College Partnership, and through state-of-the-art distance learning, the University meets the undergraduate, graduate and professional needs of the citizens of Northeast Texas and beyond. Its mission is achieved through teaching, scholarship, and service activities on its campuses, and in the community and region.

THE CAMPUS The historic main campus is located on 140 acres in Commerce, Texas, 65 miles northeast of Dallas. Classes also are offered at the Metroplex Center in Mesquite, the Universities Center in downtown Dallas and Navarro College in Corsicana.

Founded in 1889 by a young Kentuckian, William L. Mayo, the University began as a teacher-training or “normal” college. It was one of many such schools of the time, but from the beginning it was set apart by Professor Mayo’s progressive teaching style. He created a student-centered learning environment that was well ahead of its time, one where high standards and hands-on learning were emphasized as the best way to nurture students. That kind of teaching, along with his motto of “Ceaseless Industry, Fearless Investigation, Unfettered Thought, Unselfish Service to Others” has withstood the test of time to become the cornerstone of this, the fifth-oldest public University in Texas.

LOCATION:

Home of Texas A&M University-Commerce, the community is located in Hunt County, 65 miles northeast of Dallas off I-30 and 125 miles west of Texarkana. As the Gateway to Texas Lake Country, Commerce is less than 15 minutes from Cooper Lake, which offers fishing, camping, boating, and water skiing.

BACKGROUND:

Commerce was formally incorporated on September 25, 1885—which is why the Bois d’Arc Bash occurs on the nearest weekend. Starting with a population of 145, the town has grown to just over 9,300 with Texas A&M University-Commerce adding another 9,000 with its enrollment. In 1873, William Jernigin erected a general merchandise store on his farm near the present downtown – only a mile west of the rival Jackson store, a grist mill that had been around since the early 1850’s, in the village of Cow Hill. As commerce continued to flourish, Jackson finally moved his business to Commerce. Soon to follow was the Post Office, originally known as Ashland. When Jernigin generously gave a section of land for a town square, businesses thrived – the nearest competition being Greenville to the west, Ladonia to the north and Black Jack Grove to the south. In 1919, store-front owners on the square were assessed so much per food to pay for paving, completing the project within a year. They did a fine job, too, as most of the historic brick was saved during the 1985 downtown refurbishing. Commerce is considered the Bois d’Arc Capital of Texas. The Bois d’Arc tree, known for the hardness of its wood and its distinctive green “apples,” is the focus of an annual community festival held each September. The Bois d’Arc tree is indigenous to a total of 10,000 square miles in the rich bottom lands of Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas. It has been spread by man across the United States and the world. The tree is known for its hardness, flexibility, durability and resistance to contact with moisture and soil. Due to its many uses, it is an important part of the history and folklore of Northeast Texas, and thus the first festival in Commerce in 1985 was called the Bois d’Arc Bash. Its many uses include fence posts, house foundation blocks, and hedges for fields of crops to keep animals out. The Chamber of Commerce at 1114 Main downtown has a display of many items made out of bois d’arc wood. Commerce honors its heritage each year by hosting the Bois d’Arc Bash – a time of celebration, fun and entertainment. The Bash includes: Car Show, arts and crafts, youth pageant, parade, 5K run, children’s activities, wine tasting event, music and food.

FIELD HOUSE

Built in 1950 and formally dedicated on January 4, 1951, the Texas A&MCommerce Field House is in its 59th season as the home of Lion athletics. The Field House covers 69,000 square feet and will seat 5,000 people for either a volleyball or basketball contest. The facility is also the host to the University's Athletic Administration staff, the Sports Medicine Department department and the Health and Human Performance Department; in addition to the offices for the basketball, cross country and track and field, golf, soccer and volleyball teams. The Field House is shaped like an airplane hangar and has space for three basketball courts crossways. The floor allows three games to be played at the same time under one roof. The one lengthwise court is reserved for A&M-Commerce basketball and volleyball matches. With an arched roof, 58 feet from the ground at the highest point, is supported on steel beams that are stationed at one end.

GRADUATION

In the fall of 1949, then University President James Gee first announced the construction of the Field House and Memorial Stadium. At a cost of $325,000, the crews of George L. Dahl were able to complete the project in just over a year. Since the original structure was built, there have been four renovations including in 1969 that included a two-story addition for classrooms and offices, a dressing room and a storage area and latest renovation came during the winter of 2010 with the refurbishment of the main playing surface, a new sound system and two new Daktronicsâ&#x201E;˘ scoreboards. In addition to being the site of many great Lions basketball and volleyball contests, the facility is also the host to the University's commencement exercises as well as concerts and volleyball camps.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT CRAIG CASE

Head Coach

Craig Case is beginning his first season as the head coach for Texas A&M UniversityCommerce. He was named the head volleyball coach on May 20, 2010. Upon his hiring, A&M-Commerce athletic director, Carlton Cooper said “we are very excited to have Craig Case join our Lion athletic family. He brings a wealth of experience and strong national recruiting ties to our program. We were looking for a volleyball coach to take our program to the next level as a nationally recognized program. We have selected the right person by choosing Craig Case to lead our volleyball program.” Case comes to A&M-Commerce with an extensive volleyball coaching career, including the last four seasons at Valley City State University in Valley City, North Dakota. In addition to serving as the Head Volleyball Coach, he also served as an instructor and as the school’s Sports Information Director. He guided the Vikings to its first winning season in nearly a decade and currently ranks third all-time in career wins in the program. At VCSU, Case coached the athletic department’s first-ever, first-team female All-American, two academic all-americans, an AVCA/NAIA Regional Player of the Year as well as multiple players, who earned conference recognition from the Dakota Athletic Conference. Among the recognitions were two DAC Liberos of the Year and a DAC Player of the Year. Twice, his team was recognized by the NAIA as Champions of Character and was recognized by the AVCA for its academic success. Concurrently, he had also been involved as the Director of the Valley City Juniors Volleyball Club. Case served as the Head Volleyball Coach at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma as they restarted their volleyball program in 2005, where he had a player earn all-Sooner Athletic Conference honors. Prior to that, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach and assistant in the athletic development office at Northern State University, where he directed two all-region performers and five all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference selections, a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Libero of the Year and the team earned academic honors from the AVCA all three years. He has been active with volleyball camps ranging from remedial developmental to elite performance camps. He has served as a speaker at the North Dakota, South Dakota and the Oklahoma Volleyball Coaches Association clinics. Case received his bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University in 1999 and holds a master’s degree in education from St. Lawrence University and received his master’s degree in education with an emphasis in Physical Education, Health and Coaching at Northern State University.

AMANDA SMITH Assustant Coach

Amanda Smith begins her first season as an assistant volleyball coach for Texas A&M University-Commerce. Smith begins her collegiate coaching career after a standout career for Case at Valley City State University. In 2009, she was named as the Dakota Athletic Conference Libero of the Year, second team all-conference and a six-time selection as the Libero of the Week. She finished the season with a conference-leading 741 digs and 6.50 digs per set. The 6.50 digs were fourth in the nation en route to honorable mention AVCA All-Region recognition. The Burnsville, Minnesota natve graduated with her bachelor’s degree in health sciences May 2010.

TEXAS A&M SYSTEM BOARD OF REGENTS MICHAEL D. McKINNEY, M.D. Chancellor, The Texas A&M University System Dr. Michael D. McKinney is chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. Since taking office in 2006, he has assembled a leadership team of top researchers, policy-makers, planners and implementers to guide the A&M System into a new era of cooperation, achievement and international prestige. Dr. McKinney has championed the recruitment of the best and brightest faculty, staff and administrators at the System’s 11 universities, seven state agencies and health science center. Under his leadership, the System’s Office of Technology Commercialization has expanded the ways in which universities and the public can benefit from commercial alliances. Another mark of his leadership can be seen in booming enrollment across the System, which has increased to more than 109,000 students. That includes more than 22,000 graduates this year.

Dr. McKinney came to the A&M System from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he was senior executive vice president and chief operating officer. He is a former chief of staff to Governor Rick Perry, and was appointed commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission by former Governor George W. Bush. Dr. McKinney practiced medicine for 16 years in Centerville, Texas, and served in the State Legislature from 1984 to 1991. He was recognized as one of the Ten Best Legislators and was speaker pro-tempore from 1989 to 1990. The University of Texas Medical Branch awarded him the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2009, the highest alumni honor bestowed by the university’s School of Medicine Alumni Association.

UnivERSITY ADMINISTRATION DR. DAN JONES President Dr. Dan Jones, the 11th president of Texas A&M University-Commerce, was appointed by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents in July 2008. Born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Dr. Jones earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and English from the University of Texas at Austin. Jones went on to pursue a master’s degree in English from Rice University, as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Iowa. Jones’s career in education began at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming, where he served as an English instructor. He continued his academic career at the University of Houston-Downtown, where he served as Dean of University College. From 2003-2008, he served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M International University. As president, he is passionate about the power of education to transform lives, families, and communities. He has partnered with the Hispanic, Black, Asian, and North Dallas Chambers of Commerce, and has implemented strategic initiatives geared at making A&M-Commerce both military friendly and a Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI). Jones also played a key role in the hiring of head football coach Guy Morriss. Jones is married to Jalinna Jones, and has two daughters, Aislinn and Allyson.

DR. RANDY McBROOM Faculty Athletics Representative Associate VP for Academic Affairs

Dr. Randy McBroom, the associate vice president for academic affairs at A&M-Commerce, is in his 12th year as the university’s faculty athletics representative. The Bonham, Texas native earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Texas State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas. In 1989, he returned to his alma mater as an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice. As a faculty member at A&M-Commerce, he has received numerous teaching awards including the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award, the Student Government Association Faculty of the Year award and the Sigma Xi Outstanding Science Teacher award. In 2000, he was appointed as the director of institutional research, and in 2001, he was named the assistant to the president for planning and institutional effectiveness. Since 1995, McBroom has served on the A&M-Commerce Alumni Association Board of Directors. McBroom and his wife, Dana, live on the family farm where they raise horses and take care of their grandchildren.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR: CARLTON COOPER Carlton Cooper is in his fourth year as the athletic director at Texas A&M University-Commerce after spending the previous nine years working for the athletic department at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He comes with an extensive athletic background as a former student-athlete and as a supervisor of internal and external affairs within intercollegiate athletics. Under Cooper’s leadership at A&M-Commerce, the athletic department has already made significant strides in becoming a national leader in athletics. The athletic department has seen a rise in graduation rates among its student-athletes and initiated an athletic director’s breakfast for student-athletes who earn a 3.0 or higher gradepoint average during the year. He has been a driving force behind a significant upgrade to all the athletic facilities including the addition of the second largest scoreboard and video board in NCAA Division II athletics, the installation of bleachers to the east side of Memorial Stadium, air conditioning to the A&M-Commerce Field House, lights to the A&M-Commerce Soccer Field, a brand new football locker room, renovations to the coaches and athletic administration offices as well as the locker rooms and the athletic training and rehabilitation room, added new basketball goals with three-dimensional clocks and a new court. He has also implemented a compliance education program and increased community engagement and community awareness. Cooper has been an active speaker in the community speaking at the Dixie Softball Boys and Girls Convention, the all sports banquets at Mountain View College and Dallas Lincoln High School and the Paris ISD Black History Month. Under Cooper’s administration, the university has established partnerships with Domino’s Pizza, Nike, Pepsi and Pizza Hut. The university has proposed and passed its first athletic fee; plus, the annual giving, attendance, budget and sponsorships have all doubled. Also under his administration, the athletic department has also balanced its budget for three-straight years. Cooper currently serves on the Division II Athletic Director’s Association Executive Board of Directors for a four-year term. He and the athletic department have also brought in instructional/ motivational speakers to talk with the student-athletes, started a kickoff luncheon for fall and spring sports, seen an increase in tailgating at home games and renewed the Blue-Gold football scrimmage at the end of spring football practice. Cooper has started annual events including FCA GameDay and the John McLendon Foundation basketball game. He has brought back such traditional events as the Dr. Jesse J. Hawthorne Relays and the Margo Harbison cross country meet. Under his leadership, seven individuals have earned All-American honors and 23 have received all region recognition. Lions’ student-athletes have also picked up 38 first team all-Lone Star Conference honors, 18 to the second team and 13 honorable mention. Academically, two have earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine academic all-district, 15 have been named to the LSC All-Academic Team and an additional 18 more were named to the conference’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Cooper has also hired Mark Pryor, the 2009 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year and Guy Morriss, the 2009 Lone Star Conference North Division Coach of the Year. In his second year, in 2008, the women’s soccer team reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament, four members of the track and field team qualified for the NCAA Championships, the men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament. Cooper served as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations at SMU from 2000 to 2007, where he was responsible for the coordination of day-to-day internal operations of the athletic department while assisting the director of athletics in supervising and providing leadership for department initiatives. He was involved in the development of long-range and annual operating plans. From 1998 to 2000, Cooper served as the SMU’s Community Relations Director.

He holds memberships to a number of organizations and has served as a board member for the Dallas All-Sports Association, SMU Advisory Board for the new student recreation center, Longhorn Hall of Honor, SMU Ex-Student Association, and the University of Texas Ex-Student Association. In the past, he has been active on the NCAA Championship Cabinet and is also involved in the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Dallas Asian and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, NACDA and the University of Texas Longhorn Foundation. The Paris, Texas native was added to the Wall of Fame at the Boys and Girls Club of the Red River Valley in the spring of 2007. Cooper played college basketball at the University of Texas from 1982 to 1985 and was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks. He went on to serve as a player/coach in the Netherlands, New Zealand and Philippines before returning to Paris in 1994 to become the Head Boys Basketball Coach and with Assistant Principal duties. Cooper earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Texas in 1985. A two-time member of the Dean’s List, he received the Texas Teacher Certificate in 1985 as well. Cooper collected a graduate certificate in mediation/arbitration from SMU in 2000 and earned a Master’s of Liberal Arts degree from SMU in December 2001. Cooper was a four-year letterwinner of the men’s basketball team at Texas, where he also was an assistant coach when they won a regular season conference title in 1986. He is the son of Clarence and Barbara Cooper of Paris, Texas is married to Niesje and they have four children, Brandon, Danielle, Chanel, Ava and dog, Holiday.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT JUDY SACKFIELD Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs/SWA

Judy Sackfield joined the Texas A&M University-Commerce Staff January 2008 as the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator. As the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs, Sackfield manages the academic support services for student-athletes and is the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Sackfield oversees the NCAA degree progress, academic planning, and postgraduate opportunities for A&M commerce student-athletes. Sackfield has been instrumental in implementing academic support service initiatives and developing relationships within the academic departments throughout the A&M Commerce campus. At A&M-Commerce, Sackfield is the sport administrator over the men’s and woman’s basketball and volleyball programs. She also serves as the UIL Championship Director for basketball, track & field and volleyball. In addition, Sackfield is an instructor within the A&M Commence Health and Human Performance Department in the College of Education. Prior to Sackfield’s arrival at A&M-Commerce she was the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services at UAB where she served 10 years directing the academic support unit. While at UAB, Sackfield was instrumental in developing a comprehensive advising unit with her primary focus dealing with the total development of the individual student-athlete. She was responsible for the student-athlete advisory committee and the CHAMPS/Life Skills program coordinator. She also served on the faculty within the Department of Human Studies in the School of Education. Prior to her academic support services position, Sackfield was the head volleyball coach at UAB from 1992-99 and Georgia Tech from 1985-91. She is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), and National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A). In addition, she has served on the CHAMPS Advisory Board for the Division IA Athletic Directors Association. Currently Sackfield serves on the NACWA Awards Committee and the NACWA 2010 Local Organizing Committee. She has served as the chairperson on multiple job search committees as well as academic enhancement committees within the university. The native of Scarborough Ontario, Canada, Sackfield is a graduate of Clemson University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management. Sackfield earned her masters degree from UAB in Education with an emphasis in Sports Administration. Sackfield played volleyball for the Clemson Tigers, where she was a four year letter winner and a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection.

KONI DAWS

Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Koni Daws was named the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Texas A&M UniversityCommerce in November 2009. In addition to monitoring compliance with NCAA, conference and University Rules and bylaws, she serves as the sport administrator for men’s and women’s cross country/track and field and women’s

soccer programs. She spent the last seven years at Southern Methodist University. While at SMU, she was involved in the areas of sports administration, NCAA compliance and research, financial aid, admissions, academic advising and monitoring and program development. Daws also has served as the director for NCAA and Conference USA championships, served as a member of university committees as well as the NCAA Academic/Eligibility/Compliance cabinet. Daws joined the SMU staff as the Coordinator of StudentAthlete Financial Aid/Student Services in May 2002 and advanced in her career including being named an Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator in August 2005. Before coming to SMU, she served in multiple positions at Oklahoma State University including the Career Consultant for Student-Athletes, Senior Financial Coordinator and as an adjunct member of the Accounting faculty. She also served as the Director of Finance/Assistant Director of Legislative Services at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska, master’s in accountancy from the University of Missouri and a master’s in sport administration from Wichita State University. Daws is also a 1997 NACWAA/HERS graduate.

KATRINIA CLARK Administrative Assistant to Athletic Director

Katrinia Clark is in her second year as the administrative assistant to the athletic director. The Paris, Texas native came to A&M-Commerce after a management career with Hertz Rental Car company in Las Vegas, Nevada. At A&M-Commerce, she handles the coordination of the activities of the athletic director and special events including the All Sports Banquet and the Hall of Fame. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Texas A&M-Commerce in 2006. Clark and her husband, James live in Greenville. She is the daughter of Brent McKee of Paris and Sherry McKee of Hartshorne, Oklahoma.

WARREN YOUNG

Director of Sports Medicine Warren Young was named the Director of Sports Medicine at Texas A&M University-Commerce in September 2007. Young serves as the sport administrator for the football program and the supervior of A&MCommerce athletic facilities - Memorial Stadium, T-Lounge and Whitley Gym. Young has implemented the ImPaCT Concussion Management Program and added new equipment and treatment modalities to the sports medicine program at A&M-Commerce. Before coming to A&M-Commerce, he served as the Assistant Football Athletic Trainer and Director of Undergraduate Student Athletic Trainer program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas for five years. Young has also been involved with student athletic trainers as well as sports coverage, including track and field and cross country. In addition to his intercollegiate experience, he has worked as an assistant athletic trainer for a MLS team and a NFL team. Away from work, he has been involved with the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, Jesuit College Preparatory School and Ryan Gibson Foundation for Leukemia Advocacy. Young is married to Annie Taszarek of Plano and the two have a dog, Hank and a cat, Honey.

DANNY KAMBEL

Director of Media and Public Relations Danny Kambel is in his fifth year as the Director of Media and Public Relations at Texas A&M-Commerce. At A&M-Commerce, Kambel serves as the primary media and public relations liaision for all 11 intercollegiate sports. He also handles the oversight of production and design of athletics publications and the website (www.lionathletics.com). While at A&M-Commerce, he has landed media coverage in the Los Angeles Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Miami Herald, Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram featuring student-athletes and Lions athletics. Before coming to A&M-Commerce, Kambel served as a media relations coordinator at Florida International University and as an assistant director for athletic media relations at Indiana State University. In addition, he did a pair of one-year internships at Indiana University and the U.S. Naval Academy. He has served as the media coordinator for two NCAA Championships, a NCAA regional and on the sports information staff at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2003 World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis. The Eldridge, Iowa native earned his associate’s degree from Columbus State Community College in 1996 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo in 1999. In 2006, he was inducted into the Columbus State Community College, Sport and Exercise Studies Hall of Fame.

SPORTS MEDICINE

The sports medicine staff at Texas A&M-Commerce is dedicated to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, in addition to maximizing athletic performance. Director of Sports Medicine Warren Young is assisted by full-time, cerified and licensed athletic trainers Courtney Hobbs and Dustan Thrift; certified and licensed graduate assistant athletic trainers Tim Neal and Krystal Tyree as well as 12 student athletic trainers. The Lions largest treatment facility is located in the A&MCommerce Field House. At the Field House, available equipment includes: cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, moist heat, electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound. A&M-Commerce student-athletes also perform rehabilitation at Hulsey Physical Therapy Clinic.

Dear Prospective Student-Athlete As a prospective student-athlete, you may have the athletic ability to play at Texas A&M University-Commerce. If so, you may be exposed to a large amount of recruitment from various universities across the nation. Throughout the recruitment process, coaches may reference various NCAA rules and regulations. The rules are designed for various reasons, but the two primary reasons are to ease the pressures on the prospective student-athlete and to level the playing field from one university to another. During the recruiting process you may have some of the following questions: When and how often may I visit a university’s campus? How many times may a coach observe me in practice or a competition? When, where and how often may a coach telephone me? What academic credentials do I need to be eligible to play collegiate sports? All of these answers and more may be obtained from Texas A&M University-Commerce or the NCAA by requesting the NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete. This guide may be provided to a prospective student-athlete at any time. The guide will discuss issues related to Division I, II and III, academic eligibility, financial aid, recruitment and many more. Violations of NCAA rules during your recruitment may jeopardize your collegiate eligibility; therefore, you and your parents need to learn as much as possible about the recruitment process.

Compliance Guidelines

The Athletic Department takes great pride in abiding by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Lone Star Conference rules and guidelines that govern Division II competition. For the benefit of the many alumni, fans and booster club members who are so active in supporting and assisting the Lions throughout the year, we would like to remind everyone of a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic representatives and boosters. NCAA Principles Institutional Control It is the responsibility of Texas A&M University-Commerce to control its intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Responsibility The Texas A&M University-Commerce athletic department has responsibility for the conduct of its program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual, booster or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletic interests of the institution. Compliance Texas A&M University-Commerce must monitor its program to assure compliance and to identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved. An institution found to have violated NCAA rules is subject to disciplinary and corrective actions as determined by the NCAA. NCAA Definitions Athletic Representative/Booster You are considered to be a Texas A&M University-Commerce athletic representative if you: • Are a present or past member of a Texas A&M University-Commerce booster club or agency that promotes the Lions’ intercollegiate athletic program; • Have made financial contributions to the athletic department or to an athletic booster organization of the Texas A&M University-Commerce; • Are, or have been, providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs, meals etc.) to enrolled student-athletes, their family members or friends; • Are, or have been involved in any manner of promoting the Texas A&M UniversityCommerce intercollegiate athletic program.

Please note: Once an individual is identified as an athletic representative, that person retains that identity indefinitely. Texas A&M University-Commerce is ultimately responsible for the acts of all “representatives of athletic interests” in relation to NCAA rules and regulations. Prospective Student-Athlete A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools and junior colleges as well as students who have officially withdrawn from a four-year institution and plan to transfer to another institution. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution or a Texas A&M UniversityCommerce booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. A good rule of thumb is to treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects. Student-Athlete A student-athlete is a student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the Texas A&M University-Commerce athletic staff or other representative of athletic interests with a view toward the student’s ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletic program. Contact A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect, or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian, and a Texas A&M University-Commerce staff member or athletic representative during which any dialogue occurs. Recruiting Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s family member (or guardian) by an institutional staff member or by athletic representative of the institution, for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in Texas A&M University-Commerce’s intercollegiate athletic program.

Athletic Academic Advising

Student-Athletes at Texas A&M University-Commerce know that the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs is available to assist them in their progress toward a degree requirements, academic scheduling issues as well as post graduate opportunities. Student-athletes benefit from the collaboration of Academic Success Coaches, academic advising within their school of choice and the athletic department. There is a strong commitment to academic excellence by the Texas A&M University-Commerce athletic department. The athletic department has implemented the Academic Support Program that includes study halls, tutorial services, life skill workshops, and study skills seminars. The Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs is responsible for monitoring the academic progress of all student-athletes to ensure that they are meeting the NCAA, Lone Star Conference and university rules and regulations. The primary focus of the Athletic Academic support Program is to provide an environment which facilitates academic success of every student-athlete.

Student-Athlete Management System (SAMS)

Student-Athletes at Texas A&M University-Commerce have an internet software application that is designed specifically for the athletes. SAMS is accessible anytime and anywhere via the internet and provides the student time management opportunities. Students have the ability to look at class calendars, and set reminder times for assignments that are due. Tutoring appointments and study hall times are also scheduled through the SAMS program alerting the student-athlete of any changes to existing appointments or of any new appointments. The Associate Athletic Director for Academics uses the SAMS program to send out online progress reports throughout the year to all instructors on campus. Student-athletes, coaches, and advisors have the ability to see how they are progressing in their classes. By receiving this information academic plans can be made for each student based on their performance.

2009-10 Accomplishments

u 43 student-athletes made the Dean’s List and 14 received Presidential Honors in the fall semester. 40 student-athletes made the Dean’s List and 12 received Presidential Honors in the spring semester. u 101 student-athletes representing all 11 sports, cheerleading and athletic training gathered for the second annual Athletic Director’s Breakfast of Champions. u Seniors Perla Faudoa and Taylor Jordan were selected for the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award. u Danny Jun, a member of the men’s golf team and Lauren Flynn, a member of the volleyball team were named Lone Star Conference Scholar Athlete Award Recipients. u Senior Lauren Flynn was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic Second Team for Volleyball. u Eight student-athletes named to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team (criteria: 3.2 grade-point average and must be a sophomore) and nine more were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Among the eight named to the All-Academic was volleyball student-athlete Lauren Flynn.

Tutorial Program

The athletic department at A&M-Commerce has made a commitment to providing student-athletes with one-on-one and group tutoring in key subject areas. The tutorial program is just one of several key support services that is available to all student-athletes as they progress toward their ultimate goal of graduation. The tutors are usually seniors, graduate students and former teachers who are committed to providing a proactive, individualized approach in assisting student-athletes with course comprehension and study skills. There are other academic tutorial support areas available to all students and student-athletes on the Texas A&M University-Commerce Campus through the various departments on campus. The university is committed to the success of all students and has implemented supplemental instruction for various courses where they see a need for additional remediation.

Study Hall

In an effort to help ensure the academic success of the student-athletes, supervised study sessions are organized. The main focus of the study hall program is to help students develop consistent and appropriate study patterns by providing a structured setting to work on class assignments and to provide tutorial assistance before academic problems arise.

The Commerce Big Event is an annual event that takes place to improve the appearance, facilities or safety of the community. The event is co-sponsored by the Commerce Chamber of Commerce along with the city of Commerce and the University. A&M-Commerce athletics has taken an active role in the event with its participation for the last four years. Among the projects have included the clean up within the Norris Community and downtown Commerce, planting flowers at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum, the Blueberry Farm on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce, painting the service lines along downtown Commerce.

John McLendon Night A&M-Commerce held its inaugural John McLendon Night during a basketball doubleheader in 2009-10. A&MCommerce is one of just six NCAA Division II institutions that are a part of the John McLendon Foundation. As part of the activities for the night, A&M-Commerce recognized Charles Goodall, who was the first African-American coach to be hired at the university. Also part of the activities for the night was special guest Marques Haynes. A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, who was presented for induction by John McLendon in 1998. Texas A&M University-Commerce hosted the 2010 LSC SAAC retreat Texas A&M University-Commerce President Dr. Dan Jones and his wife, Jalinna welcomed the student-athletes and advisors to the A&M-Commerce campus with a picnic at the President’s House to begin the retreat. While at A&M-Commerce, the student-athletes participated in StrengthsQuest, the new ropes course on the A&M-Commerce campus and team-building activities in the Morris Recreation Center. In addition to the workshops and seminars, the student leaders and their advisors held meetings during the retreat.

Penny Wars

Members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce SAAC through Penny Wars and t-shirt sales were able to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2009-10. The team who won penny wars had the privilege of throwing a pie in the overall losers face. Head cross country/men’s track and field coach Darren Schneider was the overall winner and head men’s basketball coach Sam Walker was the overall loser.

Relay for Life The athletic department and SAAC hosted a Gatorade™ Pong station during the annual Relay for Life to raise money and awareness about cancer.

What is SAAC?

SAAC on a Conference Level

A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. At Texas A&M University-Commerce, the studentathlete advisory committee meets each month under the direction of Associate Athletic Director for Academic Affairs. A&M-Commerce and the NCAA Division II have established a partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a global charity that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. To raise money, the A&M-Commerce SAAC has hosted a talent show and collected donations at sporting events.

u A conference issue is anything that relates to most, or all of the schools in your conference. They are usually more general in scope than campus issues, because they are not specific to any one particular school. u Sportsmanship and the Student-Athletes Opportunity Fund are just a few issues that a conference can address. u Your conference SAAC is a great vehicle to use in order to bring issues up to both conference administrators, and student-athletes from the other schools in your conference. u If you feel that you have a conference issue, always address your campus SAAC chair or your conference representative so they can make sure your concern is addressed at the conference level.

SAAC on a Campus Level

u National issues tend to affect a majority of student-athletes across the country, rather than at a specific school or conference. u National issues can include pieces of legislation in the NCAA legislative cycle, student-athletes well-being concerns, overall competition experience and other educaiton al topics that are pertinent to student-athletes. u The National SAAC acts as the voice of the student-athlete in the NCAA governance structure, and is a valuable resource to be able to bridge the communication gap between student-athletes and the various NCAA committees.

u A campus issue is anything that can be directly addresssed by someone on your campus (e.g., Athletic Director, Senior Woman Administrator, Faculty Athletics Representative, etc.) u Campus issues usually deal with conflicts relating to facilities, academics, or a wide variety of other issues that are specific to your campus. u Use the resources available to you on campus; many times, issues to unresolved because studentathletes don’t know who to talk to. A solution cannot be found if the issue remains undefined. u It is a great idea to talk about these types of issues at campus SAAC meetings. See if other studentathletes feel the same way, and address the concern as a group.

NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS – LIONS FOR LIFE NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills History In 1991, the NCAA Foundation initiated efforts to create a total development program for student-athletes. Through the collaborative efforts of the NCAA Foundation and the Division 1A Athletic Directors’ Association, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success) was created. In 1994, after several years of development by the NCAA Foundation, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was launched to the NCAA membership. That summer 46 NCAA institutions participated in the first orientation for administrators from around the country. Since then, approximately 40 member institutions have joined the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program each year.

NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills at Texas A&M University-Commerce Texas A&M University-Commerce takes pride in being an NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The Lions for Life program was created to to promote student-athlete development and support the quality of the student-athlete experience. The program is to serve all student-athletes by assisting them to achieve their personal, educational and athletic goals. This program is also a tool to bring together units on the campus, build community within the student-athlete population and create a significant educational experience for student-athletes during their time at A&M-Commerce.

Founded in 1978, it is one of the most visable functions of the A&M-C Athletic Association. The association’s Hall of Fame Selection Committee meets annually to select “those persons, living or dead, whose contribution to Texas A&M University-Commerce have brought lasting fame and honor to themselves and A&M-C.” Induction classes must be approved by the A&M-Commerce President and Texas A&M System Board of Regents. Membership in the Athletic Hall of Fame is limited to former A&M-Commerce athletes, coaches and athletic administrators. Athletes must have completed their eligibilty 10 years prior to nomination, while coaches and administrators must have served A&M-C for 10 years. Additionally, the nominee must be a person of such integrity, character and sportsmanship that the A&MCommerce family will be inspired by the recognition. Any member of the Athletic Association may nominate a person. Texas A&M University-Commerce History

BOBBY FOX AWARD

Bobby Fox played football for the Lions from 1952-55 and was an All-American defensive back and quarterback for the Lions on two Tangerine Bowl teams. He returned to his alma mater in 1971 as an assistant football coach. His “Blue Gang” defense of 1972 was an integral key to the national championship. Fox also served as the Lions’ head track and field coach from 1972 to 1982. He was inducted into the A&M-Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. The Outstanding Alumni Coach Awards Program is made possible by an endowment establishment by Peggy Bankhead Fox in memory of her late husband, Coach Bobby Fox.
