Founder’s Letter

A A

Dear Friends, s we are approaching the end of the year, amongst many other things, we tend to reflect on our relationships. In truth, I believe that assessing our personal achievements is just as important as evaluating our professional advancements.

As my life advances, I think more and more about reciprocity – a principle that should serve as the foundation for our relationships at work and at home. For Confucius, reciprocity signified mutuality, equal exchange, an ethical code for behaviour. Derived from Latin, “reciprocus” has the connotation of altruism, making a sacrifice. Simply put, it is the art of ‘give and take’. What are we prepared to offer those around us? How far are we willing to extend ourselves in order to reach out to another person? What do we request or expect as compensation? When performing a favour, do we anticipate – consciously or subconsciously – a favour in return? Disputing whether this is right or wrong is not constructive, as for most people and in most circumstances, reciprocity is something we inherently expect. Even in cases of charitable giving, donors might still expect a return: to ‘feel good’ as a result of their actions.

In my opinion, reciprocity must be an unspoken yet understood guiding principle for all relationships; it begets thoughtfulness and consideration. As a Lioness is gracious, giving, and protective of her own, she awaits the same from others. I refer to reciprocity as “playing by the rules”, allowing for a fair game. And this is how I expect this game to be played:

• Meet me halfway, as I am there waiting for you; • Nurture our relationship, as we reap what we sow; • Be insightful and considerate, as I am to you; • Aspire with me, and our dreams might be realized faster; • Root for me, and we can double our victories; • Rejoice with me, and our celebrations will multiply; • Hold my hand firmly because I am holding yours; • Recognize that objectives become closer when we walk together;

• Reciprocate my efforts, as I have pledged my reciprocity to you. Reciprocity is key....for me. What about you?

Warmly, Jenny Katkova-Brown Founder 6

But what an average life it would be! Just think about it: you are blessed with a beautiful gift of life, with a strong mind and a loving heart. Why would you confine yourself to an average life, when there is so much to do with it? When the possibilities to live an incredible life, a life of your own making, are endless!

T t

here’s nothing wrong with being average. Yes, it’s the natural path of least resistance and, besides, being average makes your life so much simpler and easier. You don’t have to explain to people why you think the way you think and why you are the way you are – the average understands the other average perfectly well.

You know what, forget the average. Refuse to be average. You deserve so much more and are capable of building a way more fascinating life for yourself. K

imberley Newport-Mimran has gone a long way from starting her career in retail as a teenager and studying fashion merchandising in school, then working for industry giants – the Hudson’s Bay Company and Club Monaco – and finally establishing her very own Pink Tartan. Characterized by its effortless and luxurious style, the brand offers flattering silhouettes and everyday sophistication, perfect for any busy woman on the go. As a president and design director of an international fashion label, Ms. NewportMimran has her agenda booked for months ahead. How does this woman manage juggling her collections, her business and her family? This is what we tried to find out in the interview with Kimberley Newport-Mimran – exclusively for Lioness Woman’s Club.

You have achieved incredible success in the fashion industry. What does it take to become an established international designer? KM: Determination, a great team, and some business sense mixed with creative sense. I have been very passionate about fashion from a very early age. I started to work in retail at 14 and pursued it as a career. I have buying, merchandising as well as product development experience before tackling my very favourite design. My experience has given me perspective on a very competitive industry. What do you like most about your profession? KM: My profession moves forward very quickly and presents new challenges every single day. Every label has a recognizable element that defines its design. How would you describe Pink Tartan’s signature style? KM: Vouge-ish: stylish and elegant. What was the inspiration behind this style? KM: It’s a style of dressing that I have long admired. I was an avid fashion magazine reader before the internet made it so instant, and film has always been a source of inspiration. Audrey Hepburn had a great impression on me for as long as I can remember. Later, I was captivated by the style created by Edith Head for Hitchcock. In one of your interviews, you mentioned that your design world is influenced by art and food. In what ways? KM: The art world is such a hot bed of creativity. It’s always great to see when artists can think outside of any boundaries. It really helps to shape new thinking about colour, texture, shapes and mediums. Food like fashion is a passion of mine.

Inspiring Success In Style What is a typical Kimberley Mimran day? KM: No two days are the same. I have a super hectic fully-booked schedule all the time. I handle many critical decisions in all areas as the president and head designer, styling, fitting, fabric selection, assortment, planning, selling, marketing, e-com, interviews, cheque signing and dinner plans. You are a wife, mother, entrepreneur and philanthropist. This requires a lot of prioritizing. Does self-indulgence fit in this busy routine and what is it to you? KM: Time with my family. Is this part of your unwinding time as well? KM: I have so much fun spending time with my family. I treasure the experienced memories and future plans. Has your daughter Jacqueline in any way changed your perspective on life and people? KM: It always reminds me how life is such a journey. It changes your perspective, you put someone before yourself.

sweat and tears look like glitter from afar Which iconic woman do you dream of being the face of Pink Tartan? KM: Pink Tartan is more defined by a type of girl rather than a singular face. What is this “type of girl”? Does it resonate with your personality in any way? KM: Pink Tartan is very much an expression of my personal style. I design clothes I love to wear and have a loyal following. You are regarded as one of the most stylish women in Canada. You exude class and elegance, similar to iconic women like Audrey Hepburn. In your opinion, how important is the image for success? KM: Image is a very important part to capturing the brand’s essence. It is how you visually tell the story, whether it is our seasonal campaign, e-com site, store window or runway. What are the qualities you value most in people? KM: Honesty. Is there a side to you that the public isn’t aware of? KM: I love to cook. Science was my favourite subject.

In one of your interviews, you stated that being a wife and a mother is of utmost importance to you. What kind of a role model do you strive to be for your daughter? KM: I strive to be a fair and open person who listens.

Off top of your head, three books on your bookshelf that you will never give away? KM: The collection of Vogues, my art and fashion books. I could never part with them! What’s next for Kimberley Mimran and Pink Tartan? KM: We are expanding e-commerce and our retail presence, opening more outposts for the lifestyle shop concept that includes the collection I design and products from all over the globe. Is there anything you would have done differently on your journey to success? KM: For every door that closes there is a new one to open. I have learned so much through experience, both good and hard, that has added to the fabric of my journey. Most of members and followers of the Lioness Woman’s Club are entrepreneurial women. What would you like to share with them from your experience as an entrepreneur? KM: I think that as an entrepreneur the biggest asset for me has been perseverance – never giving up – and being able to adapt to changes, constantly finding creative ways to move forward. As a quote, I will steal from my husband, “sweat and tears look like glitter from afar”.

T

a Surefire Way to Your Secure Future by Yvonne Blaszcznyk

The natural beauty and lustre of gold has been irresistible to women and men for centuries, so it is no wonder that gold bullion has long represented wealth and security. Far beyond its use as a glittering adornment, gold is a critical component of the foreign exchange reserves, serves as a safe haven against volatile markets and offers unique protection in times of geopolitical conflicts and international economic pressures. Along with precious metals such as silver and platinum, the value of gold bullion has withstood the test of time and is an essential element of any investment portfolio. Turning a centuries-long love affair with gold into a diversification tool for wealth preservation makes sense in the world we live in. According to research compiled by Investor Economics and recently cited in the Globe and Mail, women control over $3 trillion in assets and over $1 trillion in financial wealth in North America. Just as we take care of our families’ long-term health

10

and wellbeing, we must conclude that the long-term preservation of our assets is an integral part of securing prosperity for our children and their children alike. The world’s economic growth is slowing and it would not take more than a slight escalation of any of the current global crises for the world’s economy to feel a significant impact. We cannot ignore the need to protect ourselves and our wealth, and there is no better investment vehicle than physical bullion to provide that protection. The main driver of the price of gold is the amount of global debt that is being created to keep the current fiat currency system afloat. The US dollar, decoupled from the gold standard in 1971 by President Nixon, has lost 95.6% of its purchasing power in terms of gold and 82.9% in terms of the official CPI. In fact, fiat, or paper, currencies have a long history of failure resulting in catastrophic effects on the economy and the lives of people in countries such

as Germany, Argentina, Hungary, Georgia and, most recently, Zimbabwe. Inflation, matched with uncontrollable government fiscal irresponsibility, is almost certain to result in a currency collapse. By observing governments printing more and more paper money to cover debt, the case for gold ownership becomes clear. As currencies decline, they lose their purchasing power against gold and gold can rise as high as currencies can fall. Gold is rare and cannot be printed or otherwise manufactured. Gold is money in the truest sense of the word, can be stored safely, accounted for and holds its value over the long term. Gold has been currency for thousands of years and is clearly a more stable economic standard than fiat currency. According to Nick Barisheff, President and CEO of Bullion Management Group Inc. and author of 10,000 Gold, people should, at the very least, hold between 10 and 20 percent of their portfolio or net worth in physical

bullion. Mr. Barisheff also speaks to the concept of owning physical gold over other forms of gold investment. “Gold acts like portfolio insurance with no premiums,” says Mr. Barisheff. “It is critical that your bullion holdings have no counterparty risks, and are not proxies or derivatives”. It is very important to critically evaluate our current global complexities and not get lured by “fool’s gold”. The worst way of investing in gold is through paper proxies such as ETFs, certificates or unallocated accounts. Investing through these modes is similar to investing in stocks with all the dangers and risks attached. An ounce of gold is just that – an ounce. It is incorruptible and unchangeable and when purchased through a reputable company like

“Gold acts like portfolio insurance with no premiums,” says Mr. Barisheff. “It is critical that your bullion holdings have no counterparty risks, and are not proxies or derivatives”.

Bullion Management Group, it truly belongs only to you. Gold is the most negatively correlated asset to traditional financial assets such as stocks and bonds. Gold tends to move in the opposite direction and thereby improves portfolio returns. This is, in fact, the basics of diversification. Buying physical gold, silver and platinum bullion is a traditional way of preserving wealth, and is quite simple to purchase, store and liquidate. You can buy gold in the coin or bar form in different weights, choose from a variety of bar sizes for platinum and that are easy to store and liquidate. There are several key steps to take when purchasing physical bullion to ensure your investment is secure. Bullion Management Group offers this advice when considering purchasing physical bullion: •

Make sure your bullion truly belongs to you and your family. BMG provides individual numbered deeds, or

BullionDeedsTM , to all of their clients ensuring individual deeded ownership to each bar. All clients have clear evidence of title that identifies each product by refiner, exact weight, finess and serial number. This is a numerical process, protecting the confidentiality of the investor. Beware of unallocated bullion products as investors are not protected by the depositor insurance that covers regular bank accounts, and the bullion is considered part of the bank’s assets, not yours, so it is not insured against bankruptcy or insolvency.

Only purchase bullion that meets the highest standard of purity, or bars that meet the Good Delivery status. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) sets the standards for size, purity and quality of Good Delivery bars, and those bars remain within the chain of integrity

Ultimately, purchasing bullion is more about purchasing peace of mind than anything else. We may live in uncertain times, but we don’t

of member dealers, refiners and custodians. BMG is an associate member of the LBMA and stores its clients’ bullion in LBMA member vaults. This membership provides protection from counterfeit or impurity. Carefully consider storage options. While investors can store their own bullion, BMG offers secure, allocated custodial storage with ScotiaBank or Brinks, in a large variety of LBMA member vaults around the world. Brinks storage is an option to consider for some investors as there are no reporting requirements on your holdings.

need to take uncertain risks with our family wealth. Now is a great time to invest in gold as the price is artificially low and sure to rise. According to Mr. Barisheff, “Whether the gold price is $1100 or $1500 next year doesn’t really matter. Over the next five to ten years the gold price will rise to levels that most people will find hard to believe due to the irreversible macro trends set out in my book - $10,000 Gold.” Investing in quality, allocated bullion is quite simple to do and if you follow the guidelines above and consider apportioning 10 to 20% of your portfolio to gold then you can rest assured your family’s wealth is in the best hands – your own.

iana was born to an affluent family from France, the Dalziels, who had everything they ever wanted. As comfortable as a life of wealth is, it still comes with its own set of challenges. One day, during a walk through Central Park, Diana was being an enthusiastically proud big sister to her little one, Alexandra. Her mother, misinterpreting the situation, said, “It’s too bad that you have such a beautiful sister and that you are so extremely ugly and so terribly jealous of her.” Diana came to respond to the memory, saying, “Parents, you know, can be terrible.” It was a moment that no doubt fuelled the rest of her life and strengthened her to the point of embracing her looks and finally her whole self. Paying it forward, it’s this idea of loving and being proud of yourself that Diana shared with readers by spilling it onto the pages of magazines. Often, she would embrace the very thing most would try to hide, like an unusual nose, and turn it around to be what makes the photo. She denied the idea of typical beauty, saying “today only personality counts . . . I do not believe we should put in [the magazine] so-called society, as it is démodé and practically doesn’t exist . . . but ravishing personalities are the most riveting things in the world – conversation, people’s interests, the atmosphere that they create round them – these are the things that I feel are worth putting in any issue.” While she may not have been considered a “typical” beauty, her sense of style and elegance surpassed any other. Diana saw beauty and class in places, where others overlooked, without ever having officially studied fashion. She was hired on the spot to work at Harper’s Bazaar when she crossed paths with the editor at a party, who was blown away with her outfit. Ironically, Diana was featured as a socialite in Vogue long before editing was in the picture for her. She knew when something resonated with her and people and spared no

expense to get it, sometimes giving others seemingly impossible tasks and not taking no for an answer. Diana was very aware of the reader and the fact that most were women who did not have the same resources she did. She was an expert at combining style and function. It was Diana we can credit with the introduction of both the bikini and jeans. When Carrie Donovan, a former employee, approached Diana with an idea of putting together a spread about long skirts, Diana responded saying, “‘Oh, no, Carrie, modern women aren’t going to go for that. They have to drive kids to school.” Diana’s connection to the everyday women gave birth to her vision to expand beyond fashion to pop culture taking her work to extreme heights. She was the first to use fame power from actors and singers like Barbra Streisand, Cher and Twiggy, as well as to turn the

table and make her models like Penelope Tree and Jean Shrimpton stars in their own right. Success breeds success, so it’s no surprise that Diana was a star of her own. At the top of her game, a la Devil

While they had a strong marriage that brought two sons, Thomas and Frederick, into the world, her career took a toll on the family at times. The boys spent much of their time in boarding school and with a nanny. Reed was a banker and during World War Two was transferred to Montreal. Not wanting to give up her place at the Harper’s Bazaar, she opted to stay in Manhattan. It’s rumoured that when Diana got wind that Reed was living with another woman, she traveled to Montreal and confronted the woman saying, “Look at you, you are young and beautiful, and you have everything ahead of you. I am getting older and I have only my wonderful husband.”

While some of the choices she made may forever puzzle us, what is certain is that Diana made a tidal wave splash in this world. In a way only Diana could, she helped the world – especially women – see with new eyes, and not only dare, but demand to go for the life they wanted. Most importantly, Diana taught us to embrace the unordinary and love what might seem tarnished in others, the world and ourselves.

Perfume: In the Boudoir

Dreams and Smoke in Bottles

N

by Brigitte Kobi

Never underestimate the importance of a scent – be it good or bad. The German equivalent of “I cannot stand this person” is literally “I cannot smell this person”. On the other hand, Jean Patou created “Joy” immediately after the Wall Street Crash in 1929, because he knew that all the investors who lost everything would need some comfort and luxury. Scents influence our mood and they are everywhere, though mostly unnoticed.

16

Luxuries by Lioness l Fall-Winter 2014

History In ancient times, people burned incense and myrrh as a sacrifice to their gods. During Egypt’s Pharaonic period, priests were familiar with blending flowers and juices. The ancient Romans, who were fond of luxury, were abundant users of perfumes. The Persian doctor and philosopher Ibn Sina (980 – 1037) discovered the secret of distillation and created rosewater and rose-scented oils, which were used as perfumes. While perfume was always present in the Orient, the Western world almost forgot about it during the European Middle Ages. It only re-appeared in the beginning of the 17th century and only rich and famous people like Marie-Antoinette could afford it.

Nowadays, perfume is a multi-billion dollar industry. Don’t you think this is remarkable, since the result of perfume – namely its scent – is invisible? The notion of perfume stems from the Latin “per fumum”, which means “through smoke”. It is a bit like selling dreams. In order to make smoke and dreams tangible, they must be wrapped nicely. At the beginning of the 20th century, the French glassmaker René Lalique started to create perfume vials for one of the most influential perfumers named François Coty (1874 – 1934), who was born on the island of Corsica and was a distant relative to Napoleon Bonaparte.

If we enter a perfume shop today, we are overwhelmed by the display of precious bottles made to keep forever. And not only the looks, but the “sound” of a perfume has to be attractive, too. Did you ever pay attention to the elaborate names perfumes typically have? While Coty named his creations mostly according to the main ingredients or the type of scent like “La Rose Jacqueminot” or “Ambre Antique”, Coco Chanel was the first one using her own name for perfumes. Of course, Mademoiselle Chanel was somebody.

A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting. - Christian Dior

Chanel No. 5 (Chanel), Joy (Jean Patou), Youth Dew (Estée Lauder), L’Air du Temps (Nina Ricci)… These names are much more than descriptions. Each of them is a concept, a life script, a memory. Today, they are classics, but in their time, they were trend-setters.

“A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting”, said Christian Dior Today, Christian Dior’s quote has more relevance than ever. Nobody writes letters by hand anymore, and everybody wants to be unique and special. .

I see two types of perfume users: the flexible collector and the most loyal.

An Invisible Business

Perfume Groups for Women’s Scents Perfume groups are like families. The siblings of each family mainly consist of similar ingredients.

Floral

This is the largest family. Scents of roses, jasmine, ylang-ylang (cananga odorata), daffodil (narcissus), iris, tuberose and dianthus belong to it.

Oriental

These are the sensual notes of the Arabic world. The most important ingredients are amber, musk, vanilla, exotic resins and spices.

Chypre

The name originates form the French name for Cyprus. François Coty created a scent by the name of Chypre, and the ingredients he used for it are now standard for an entire perfume group: oak moss, labdanum, patchouli and bergamot are the main ingredients. These are the main groups, but there are as well Wood, Citrus and Leather. Most perfumes are not just floral or oriental, but belong to a sub-group like, for example, floral-fruity or chyprefloral.

The flexible collector is a person who owns perfumes for each mood, season outfit and occasion. Typically, they have a huge collection of bottles that make an impressive and unique decoration for the bathroom. The most loyal type possesses one or two different scents, which she uses regardless of her mood or the season. Changing perfume is comparable to a radical change of hair style. Since I am the most loyal perfume type, I was kind of lost when my scent went out of sale and it took me a lot of time to find what I like now. But nothing is ever lost, and I gained quite some insight of perfume compositions and perfume concepts.

Scream Chic, With Your

Red Lip by Shreya Ghosh

“Put on some red lipstick and live a little

is a popular saying since decades. Our age-old divas flaunted it with crimson berries besmirched on their lips to our generation where we spend hours in Sephora to pick the right hue for that indelible impression in the party. Your makeup bag without a red lipstick is undoubtedly incomplete. Women, fair or dark, should always have a red stick in their vanity. It is simply like blue jeans and a white shirt in your wardrobe. The scarlet hue is a definite enhancer of your sultry persona. Yes, it takes time to select a red colour that will suit you, but it is quite a worth for that evening date with your darling. Here are few steps that will help you to choose the right red for yourself.

Knowing your skin tone is the most important. Check the inside of your arm and determine your shade. If the undertone of your skin is orange or red, your skin tone is considered warm. Women with warm skin tone should ideally sport a warm red color in their lip. It gives a subtle yet sophisticated look. 20

On the other hand, if your tone has tinges of blue and pink, you have a cool skin tone. Go for something that looks soothing on you. Again, some of us will have a neutral skin tone, if the tinges of the skin are olive or yellow, and yes, they are the fortunate lot. Without much pondering, they can choose the right red for themselves. Now the question is, which colours of red are warm and which are cool? Warm reds will have a tinge of orange or bronze in them. It is also important to analyze your lip shape and size. If you have plump lips, avoid reds with brown undertone, as your pout might appear to be even bigger. Neutral red sticks are for you. It is also not very advisable to use dark red on thin lips. Furthermore, be cautious with your teeth colour. For snow-white teeth, use red with brown undertones. For teeth with yellow tinges, blue-red or a neutral red looks the best. Another way to choose your right red is to check how dark the colour is against your skin. If you like the colour to pop out, then choose the opposite colour of your skin tone. However, in this case, do not forget to balance it out with a proper eye makeup. Otherwise, it might scream too loud for attention (wrong attention). Still, if you are perplexed with your selection, keep the occasion in mind. Keeping the occasion in mind will ease out the process a lot more. Like in a corporate meeting, it is best to wear a matte lip colour instead of a glossy one. A red gloss is best for a date or a wedding. Alternatively, you can buy one of each and experiment with your look. Ultimately, it is your style and your choice that you would like to sport. A proper harmonization with your dress, your red lip and your confidence would simply scream chic! The texture of the lipstick is also very important while selecting your right red. Red might be sultry, but not all textures are. A true

red colour with gloss in abundance might look like dripping blood, making you look like a vampire. Therefore, the right kind of texture of the red stick also contributes to your style quotient. Be Careful! Red, the sexiest of all lip colours, also has certain application rules to enhance the outcome. A flaky lip is definitely a “no-no”. Scrub and moisturize before you apply your lipstick. Application of lip primer also helps to bring out the right texture and colour that you are looking for in your selection. Red colour on a smooth lip is what attracts all. For your still confused mind, here are some ravishing red colours that you can choose from. If you are blessed with that olive skin tone, try ILLAMASHQUA’s Howl or Maneater. Alternatively, Rouge Saint Honor by LANCOME will also complement your olive skin tone. DIOR’s Ara red or Fevori red will be a good pick as well for you. For my flaxen-skinned beauties, TOM FORD’s beauty lip colour in Crimson Noir, NAR’s Matte Velvet Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, SHISEIDO’s perfect rouge lipstick in Dragon and MAC’s Ruby Woo are some that will make you look bewitchingly hot. A crimson pout can be carried off tantalizingly even by our dark beauties without a conundrum. A Beso by STILA, Riri Woo by MAC or a Cherry Lush by TOM FORD will give some incredible shades for you.

Go and grab the right red and flaunt a scarlet pout!

Are you ready to create your vision for success?

If you would you like to step into your power and architect the life you dream of, then you will require a blueprint of the future that fulfills you. A vision board is that blueprint. It is a snap shot of your joyful and inspired life in every area you wish to focus on. It is a visual representation of your goals achieved.

Creating Your

Q

uite simply because at any given time, you are operating from two parts of our mind. Your Conscious Mind – otherwise known as our “goal setter” – is your adult, rational mind that operates in the present moment and makes decisions representative of the age you are now. It represents on average 1-5% of your daily thoughts. The other part is your Subconscious or Unconscious Mind, which is your “goal getter”. It is responsible for fulfilling the conscious mind’s wishes. It operates 95-99% of the time and contains your automatic programming for everything you do. It propels you to take action – or non-action. It likes routine and predictability and resists change – even when it’s for the better. The conscious mind can think in words, but the subconscious mind thinks in images (that’s why a stop sign is a red octagon with the word stop – you are programmed to see the sign – even without the word stop and know what it is). Since the subconscious part of your

Why does a vision board help us achieve more in our lives? mind is the “goal getter”, a vision board serves to take the desires of your conscious mind (goal setter) and communicate them in a way that helps the subconscious mind focus on what you want and take consistent action with less resistance, so you get your goals with greater ease. A vision board also helps you navigate through change and make difficult transitions from one stage of life to another. As humans, we are programmed for survival. Therefore, when facing the unknown, your mind tends to conjure images of the worst case scenario to prepare you to react. A vision board helps you stay positive in the face of the unknown, as the images you see remind you of the fulfilling and joyful life you are

creating. It sets your intentions and keeps you mindful of your actions. It also helps you realize the personal growth work that may be required to succeed. For instance, if you have an image of a loving marriage on your board, but you have difficulty trusting love, then it highlights the healing you must do in order to get what you want. Often, people create

a vision board and wait for it to magically do the work. Just like an architectural blueprint, your vision outlines what you want – then you need to focus on receiving, allowing, taking inspired action and releasing any blocks in order to succeed. If you wish to be supported along this journey, visit http://courageousliving.com/about/ mentors-circle Whether you choose to create a vision board that is physically tangible with pictures you cut and paste or one that is virtual on your ipad or laptop, the result is the same.

Let’s Begin! The first step to creating change in any desired area of your life is to create the written vision of your life as you wish it to be - then create the representation in pictures. Your vision board is a pictorial story of the life you are creating as your future. It is a mental, emotional, physical, financial, and spiritual expression of the life you are called towards. It represents your goals and your bliss. It is a combination of words and photos – you can even add music. It is created from an intuitive space, so trust yourself and the process.

Supplies Physical Tangible Board: Poster board or other “canvas”, glue sticks, scissors, magazines – get as many as you can: travel, fashion, psychology, men’s health, décor etc. You can also use your own personal photos and drawings. The greater the variety of sources, the easier it will be to find your expressions.

Virtual Board on your tablet or laptop: There are many new apps for creating a vision board. Search the internet for a “vision board app” compatible with your device and download it. You can also do this using the programs that may be pre-installed on your device. You can find an infinite amount of images on the internet to download, copy and paste. Allow yourself about 4-5 hours if you want to complete it in one sitting. Choose a time frame. Is this board reflecting your life for the next six months, year, five years or more? The universe will work in divine timing and you will only get what you are subconsciously willing to receive. The time frame just helps you consciously create a focus. Inspired Creation. If you are doing this with another person or group, follow this set of questions to open up your mind and life to create your future.

7 Rules of Time Management

by Irene Lewis

W

Why do some people succeed at every undertaking, while others end up failing each time? How do achievers manage to complete so much work with seemingly no effort, while others spend hours of hard labour trying to complete a simple task? It all comes down to the art of time management. Revolutionize the way you approach your work with these seven key principles of effective time management and make a positive difference in your work and your life:

1. Devise a strategy

If you want to function effectively, stop planning to the smallest detail. Studies show that optimistic perception of reality in our brain is more intense than realistic perception. Hence, we tend to underestimate the risks and overestimate our capabilities. Planning every minute of the day is impossible, because we cannot account for all possible hindrances that may come our way: traffic, phone calls, delays, absences. Instead, choose a couple of big important tasks and few smaller tasks. If there is a task with an inflexible time frame, plan other tasks around it.

things at once. Allocate 30 minutes for a single task. If you are working on task A and suddenly have an idea about task B, write it down, then get back to task A. This technique will help you concentrate on the task at hand without losing your other ideas.

5. Urgent projects can wait

2. Unplug yourself

Do you have to always be available? No. Effective time management requires dedication. Giving your utmost attention to the project at hand is impossible when you are distracted by phone calls, e-mail notifications, and social media. When working on a task, put your phone on silent and turn off e-mail notifications if possible. And, of course, close all your social media tabs. Once you complete the task, reward yourself with a 30-minute break for all your Facebook and Twitter indulgences.

3. Stop making lists

Our brain undergoes a huge stress when faced with a choice of more than seven items. Instead of being efficient, we subconsciously aim to check everything off the list. As a result, we get the easiest tasks done first and keep postponing more complicated things. Instead of making endless lists, concentrate on calendar planning.

4. Don’t criticize yourself

There are so many people who undertake several tasks at once and never finish any of them. It’s just the way a multitasking brain is functioning. Don’t criticize yourself for lack of organization. Learn to take advantage of your brain’s ability to think about several

There are four categories of tasks: urgent and important; important but not urgent; urgent but not important; neither urgent nor important. Tasks in the last category “neither urgent nor important” are timewasters - take them off your list right away. If some social or other commitments require you to complete a task that is neither urgent, nor important, try to outsource it.

6. Do not take other people’s priorities

A task cannot be urgent but not important, so if it is – get rid of it as well. Usually, the tasks in this category are imposed on us externally. You cannot complete the work you really need to complete, when other people manage your time.

7. Focus on tasks that are important, but not urgent

The category of “important and urgent” tasks is also questionable. If there’s an important task that you keep postponing until it becomes urgent, make a note for the future, and next time don’t leave an important task until the very end. Sometimes, other people impose urgency on us: phone calls, client e-mails, technical problems… In reality, these issues are not as urgent as they seem to be: in most cases, people can call back later, and majority of technical problems become outdated within an hour. So, the only category that really matters is the tasks that are important but not urgent. Make these tasks your top priority, and you’ll see how everything falls into place.

ErtĂŠ by Julia Graham

Luxuries by Lioness l Fall-Winter 2014

The Arts Loft cultured audience, Erté was given worldwide recognition. This appreciation allowed him to develop his artistic style, which eventually became known as Art Deco. Can you imagine being so talented, that your personal artistic style would influence a whole movement? Throughout his distinguished career, Erté also designed costumes and sets for film, theatre, and opera productions. He was quite a triple threat in the fashion and art world and didn’t seem to want to slow down. At the age of 75, Erté headed in a new direction with his second career, designing several different mediums, including bronze, jewelry and serigraphy.

R

omain de Tirtoff, or more commonly known as Erté, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892 to a very notable family. His father and many of his ancestors served in the Russian Navy. One of Erté’s first drawings as a child was an evening gown that he drew for his mother. It was then that his father accepted his son’s fate: Erté would not be following his footsteps in joining the Navy. Erté moved to Paris, France in 1912 to explore his interest in fashion. The name “Erté” comes from the French pronunciation of his initials, R.T. He briefly worked for a Parisian couturier named Paul Poiret before he began his long-standing career with Harper’s Bazaar in 1915. His association with Harper’s Bazaar was a bit of a fluke.

“To glance at an Erté is amusing, to look at one is interesting, to study one is absorbing”

(William Randolph Hearst, Harper’s Bazaar, 1917).

It was his cousin that introduced the idea, but as soon as the fashion magazine saw Erté’s work, they knew they had to sign him. In the 21 years that Erté worked for Harper’s Bazaar, he created over 240 covers. Talk about talent! His designs also graced other magazines including Cosmopolitan and Vogue. As a result of the high visibility in fashion magazines, his work influenced an entire art movement known as Art Deco – a style typically characterized by its bold geometric shapes and strong colours. Since Harper’s Bazaar had such a large and

His work is flawless, elegant, and majestic. Erté’s illustrations can be so intricate and subtle, but breathtaking and understated all at once. His designs are mostly female figures draped in luxurious flowing dresses, jewelry and feathers. One could only assume that this common theme in all of his work came from his experience designing costumes and sets for the theatre. Erté’s inspiration for most of his work came from his own mother. She portrayed this ideal female beauty, a sophisticated, sexy and witty woman, which he then created in most of his designs. Most of Erté’s work resembles the way he thought about fashion and people. “Every human being has a duty to make himself as attractive as possible. Not many of us are born beautiful,” - he stated in his biography in 1975. Erté considered clothes as being able to transform something ugly into something beautiful. You can see this thought process in his artwork. Every piece he has done has been something beautiful. Bold geometric shapes and

strong colours have always been something of beauty to our eyes. Erté’s designs are over-the-top fashion fairytales, and they depict these fantasy worlds with beautiful clothing and extravagant lifestyles that we all want and aspire to have. Erté said himself, that the Erté woman is based on what he would like to be if he were a woman. Erté passed away in 1990 at the age of 97. He was a major force of design that has inspired many, such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Oscar de la Renta. His original designs are displayed in prestigious museums throughout the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

WINES AND US

Mulled Wine,

The

nights are drawing in. The air is getting crisp. Winter will soon be upon us, and as the cold weather begins, many of us start to think of delicious spicy mulled wine. There are many variations of mulled wine, but essentially mulled wine is usually red, hot, sweetened with sugar, spiced with warming spices like cinnamon and cloves, and often has citrus fruit added. My abiding memory of mulled wine is attending the Christmas service at church. The church had no electricity, so the service was lit by candles held by the congregation, who were swaddled up in scarves and hats. Young men who maybe never attended church from one year’s end to the next turned up with their girlfriends, old couples struggled out of their snowbound houses to make the service, the place was packed to the aisles.

30

Luxuries by Lioness l Fall-Winter 2014

by Deanna Toribio

The ancient church was filled with the smell of fresh cut pine branches, which were the only decorations against the whitewashed walls. And added to that smell, as the service progressed, was the mesmerizing perfume of the mulled wine being warmed up at the rear of the church by the Womens’ Auxiliary. At the end of the service, the congregation gathered behind the age-worn pews to drink cups of mulled wine, the heady, sugary, spicy drink, which says Christmas. And, of course, this was accompanied by mince pies - that traditional confection of buttery short crust pastry filled with a delectable mixture of dried fruits, nuts and spices. A gathering doesn’t get better than this! A modern take on mulled wine for this winter is to serve it with a savoury, rather than the traditional sweet dish or cookies. And I am going to be choosing some very traditional British and European ideas for a unique winter buffet

party. Mulled wine will feature, of course, using an inexpensive Californian Merlot. Merlot, with its big meaty body can stand up to the additional flavours that you I’ll be adding - brown sugar, lemon, cloves, cinnamon and a little ginger. I’ll also be making a non-alcoholic version, using berry juice, blackcurrant if I can get it. To eat, devils on horseback (prunes wrapped in bacon), tiny grilled sausages, individual cheese and walnut quiches, deep fried Camembert with gooseberry sauce, chicken liver pate brioche, cheese straws made with a little paprika and - of course - a hearty salad and crunchy bread, and big bowls of walnuts in their shells - I love Californian walnuts. And naturally, to follow, a cheese board with British cheeses like Cheddar, Wensleydale, Lancashire and Stilton, rich dark fruit cake filled with fruit and nuts, and those delicious mince pies.

Mulled wine is traditionally served in a punch bowl, a large bowl, usually glass, with little cups hanging around the edge of the bowl. Most of us don’t have such a set, although I do often see them for sale very cheaply at yard sales and auctions, so if you see a pretty one that you like, take the plunge and buy it to add to your entertainment supplies. If you don’t have a punch bowl set, then serve the mulled wine in insulated jugs, and make sure your glasses are thick enough to stand the heat of the liquid.
