Once again we present our range and once again it has grown as we continue to develop more innovative products to help people enjoy their sailing or powerboating. Within this catalogue you will find our entire range of clothing and equipment purely for people who need technical gear to keep them warm and dry. Everything we produce is for on the boat use, some of it for wearing in light conditions and some for round the world sailors, but all of it designed, and produced, to do a specific job in specific conditions. In that sense we are almost certainly the only purely technical marine clothing brand and we are proud of this fact. Highlights in this issue are our new performance lead KB11 for Keel Boat racers and our all new OS2 which is the latest in a long line of Gill Offshore cruising jackets and salopettes that have dominated their segment of the market. Finally, as a purely technical brand, innovation is key to our development process and this season you will see a great example of this in our revolutionary new award winning Compressor Vest, which in our view, is the future of low-bulk buoyancy aids. Our range is now the strongest it has ever been in our 30 year history and we are extremely proud that Gill is worn by many of the top racers and cruisers from “round the world” to Olympic sailors.

THE TECHNICAL STORY

Gill has always been the technical brand. From the materials we use to the design of the product, everything has to do the job it is intended to do. The more technical a product is the more it will add a competitive edge that improves your performance and enjoyment both on and off the water.

The process begins with a brain storm session. We invite a panel of sailors, relevant to the type of product that is being discussed. From club sailor to Olympic hopeful. From coastal cruiser to Volvo Ocean Racer. They bring in their kit bags and we discuss what works, what doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t and what is missing. Then, out of the discussion comes a product or range brief for the team of designers to research and work on. We then scour the world for the absolute latest technical materials and cutting edge designs are proposed for the team to select and move to the development sample stage.

Feedback is noted and where appropriate, designs will be modified until we are satisfied they do the best possible job they can.

One of the most important processes is the fabric and component testing department. When you are sailing you can be literally sitting in water. It is coming over the side in green bucketfuls rather than just raindrops from above. Also salt water is far more abrasive than fresh water and the fabrics need rigorous testing to establish whether they will be up to the job. Gill tests every single design and material in their own, on site laboratory full of waterproof testing equipment, abrasion machines and high humidity incubators to simulate the rigours of life on the sea.

When the designs are finalised, prototypes are made and sent out for field testing. An example of this is the Scottish National Sailing centre where instructors sail every day. It also rains quite a bit too!

Once we are totally happy that everything performs as it should, it is time to get the products made. The technical and quality approach does not stop at this point. Before bulk production can commence, all fabrics and components have to be re-submitted for approval. When the final products arrive in our warehouse they are subjected to the most thorough scrutiny, which in the case of an Ocean Jacket is a 120 point check list. This includes complete water testing of both fabrics and seams.

It is only then that products are released into stock for sale and we can be as confident as we possibly can be that the product will perform as it should. Confident enough to give the product the Gill lifetime guarantee. Nick Gill November 2008

GILL FABRIC SYSTEM When it comes to waterproof and breathable fabrics, you will be blitzed by numerous different technical-sounding names, not to mention confronted with a host of fancy swing tickets and all promoting brands claiming to be the best! At Gill we choose not to use high-profile branded fabrics as these simply add to the overall cost and limit our choice of both the quality and suitability of materials available to us.

We search the world for the best fabrics to suit the required end use and then test them to destruction. If a fabric needs an additional coating to withstand the rigours of the Southern Ocean then we give it one. tests are carried out in-house and independently in FABRIC FABRICOur FABRIC FABRIC FABRIC SYSTEM SYSTEM SYSTEM SYSTEM SYSTEM the textile department of a leading university and not just as new, but also after artificial ageing and field testing. We demand marine grade tests that simulate sitting in water as well as tests that flex and flog the fabric as if it has been used in a Force 8 gale rather than just walking on the golf course.

When the testing is complete we rank the fabric according to end usage and classify it according to our Fabric System â&#x201E;˘. These tests are not one-offs but are repeated before each production batch. This attention to detail ensures that Gill fabrics perform as well, if not better, than anything in the market today and ensures the quality of our products remain at the highest level.

WHAT TO WEAR Layering is the single most important subject for sailors to understand when they are planning what to wear. Correct layering will not only keep you a lot warmer but will also keep you dry by wicking moisture away from your skin. We recommend the following three layer system of base, mid and waterproof outer layer for maximum comfort.

LAYER

THE BASE LAYER

The base or wicking layer, which should be worn next to the skin, is designed to move moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry and warm after bursts of activity. We have two weights of base layer - i2 Lite, which will keep you cooler during highly aerobic activity and warmer conditions and i2 Tec which provides excellent insulation as part of a winter layering system.

LAYER

THE MID LAYER

The middle or insulating layer is designed to be worn over a base layer and under an outer layer. Made from synthetic thermal fibres, it assists the movement of moisture to the outer layer. These fibres do not absorb water, therefore dry quickly and keep you warm. As with the base layer, we have mid layer products in different fabric weights. These range from our new i3 lightweight microďŹ&#x201A;eece and versatile Arctic fleece garments to the i5 Crosswind, which has ultra-compact synthetic insulation and is made from a fully taped, waterproof and breathable laminated fabric.

LAYER

THE OUTER LAYER

The waterproof outer layer is intended to keep the elements out. These usually have very little or no thermal properties, but are entirely water and windproof. In order to work most efficiently, no matter what type of sailing you do, the fabric should be breathable to allow the moist air that has built up inside the garment to escape.

OCEAN

The latest version of the Gill Ocean range adheres to the core values of our original products; freedom of movement and reduced bulk whilst offering full weatherproof protection in the very worst conditions. The fabric we have selected for these products is a 5 Dotâ&#x201E;˘ fabric, but this time with even greater abrasion resistance to increase durability.

INSHORE RACING

The redevelopment of the KB range gave our design team a real challenge – improve upon what was already an established favourite of the performance keelboat sailor. We believe that we have retained the core essentials – a highly breathable and durable fabric, full freedom of movement and the elimination of any unnecessary layers and features. The new KB1 has a reduced number of taped seams, thereby improving breathability and reducing points of potential weakness.

Enhanced performance is matched by improved functionality, the trousers now have the addition of a thigh pocket with an integrated knife pocket and retaining loop as well as a unique inner gusset for convenience.

THE FABRIC AND STITCHING TECHNOLOGY Flatlock stitched

Flatlock stitching lies flat against the skin and prevents chafing. This method of construction results in a very durable finish.

Blind stitched

Blind stitched wetsuits are glued initially, then sewn with a curved needle, which doesn’t totally pierce the skin of the suit, and thus, the wetsuit remains watertight keeping you warmer and more comfortable in colder water.

TPM

Thermal Protection Material is a high density neoprene that protects the upper torso against the cooling effects of the wind and water. The denser face of the fabric is solid and will reﬂect wind and water. There are two different types of TPM on the suits. One is the C-mesh which is on the front and back chest - this is a thicker neoprene with a raised loop back - for comfort and warmth. This is strategically placed on the chest for maximum warmth and reduced wind-chill. On the shoulder areas we have added gravel skin TPM. This is a slighter thinner neoprene than the C-mesh and stretchier for the required movement. Gravel skin is also more durable than conventional Neoprene and so will withstand harness abrasion.

A UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating indicates how effective a fabric is at blocking out solar ultraviolet radiation. Our rating of UPF 50+ is the highest possible and therefore offers an increased level of sun protection. Over-exposure to UV radiation can cause sunburn, skin damage and an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Our sun protective fabrics are tested in accordance to the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS4399 which has been widely accepted as the worldwide standard for next-to-skin fabrics.
