What’s Lipscomb all about?

ALL YOU BRING.

You have ideas of what the perfect school looks like. A place that will welcome all you bring, give purpose to your potential and send you into the real world ready to chase down your dreams. Does this place even exist? Good question.

Lipscomb University could be your dream school. It’s a Christ-centered community where you’ll be deeply known and connected, with engaged learning experiences that refine your gifts and talents. Our campus is in Nashville, Tennessee—one of the fastest growing cities in the country with a booming job market. That means access to resources and opportunities you won’t find most places.

But what should you be doing now to find the right school for you? This book includes questions and tips to guide you through the process, especially as a junior— before you start submitting applications and trying to make the most of your last year of high school.

How do I choose where to go to school?

THE RIGHT FIT.

All the college options can seem daunting. How do you figure out what schools you want to focus on and learn more about? Here are 10 questions to help you decide which schools might be right for you.

What size school am I looking for? A large student population and sprawling campus offer a different experience than a small student body and cozy campus. Which environment is better suited to you?

4,800+
STUDENTS

Public or private school? An in-state public school might seem like a more affordable option based on sticker price, but a private school could offer more opportunities for connections and financial aid.

Is it important to me to attend a Christian school? If you find yourself drawn to private colleges, you should consider whether you want to learn in a place that encourages your faith.

Where is the school? It could be a big city, somewhere more secluded or a college town where the university is the focal point of the community. The kind of place where you want to live could play a big role in your college search.

JOB MARKET

How much does it cost? You’ll pay tuition and fees anywhere, but the total cost can vary greatly from one school to the next. Factor in opportunities for scholarships and financial aid that could significantly decrease your cost of attendance.

What are the admissions requirements?

Colleges have certain standards students must meet to earn acceptance. Learn those standards and consider your own credentials. Some schools only look at your grades and standardized test scores, while others consider the whole person.

Does it have my major? What if I change my mind? Choosing a major is a tough decision. Check to see if a college offers a program that lets you pursue your interests. Remember that lots of options means you can figure it out as you go or have a backup plan if it isn’t what you expected.

200+ AREAS OF STUDY $46m ANNUAL AID in scholarship and grants to students 3.8 AVERAGE GPA

What can I do on campus? Look at the extracurricular activities like campus organizations and intramural sports. Is having a team to root for important to you? These opportunities will shape your college experience as much as your classes, so make sure a school offers something that appeals to you.

What can I do off campus? At some point you might need to get out of your dorm room or get off campus for a change of scenery. So what does the city have to offer? Is there shopping and restaurants? Maybe even live music? Or will you have to drive to the next town over for some fun away from school?

Will I be able to find a good job after graduating? College will be the time of your life, but the point is to prepare yourself for life. Ask about job and grad school placement rates, career services and employment opportunities. You should feel confident you’ll see a return on investment when you get your diploma.

Ben Elementary Education

A college search in the middle of a global pandemic meant Ben Barry (’25) had to get creative.

The online search process made it more difficult to get to know schools without visiting campus, but it did allow him to consider colleges that were further from his home in the suburbs of Chicago.

“ I found Lipscomb entirely on the web,” Ben says, “I didn’t hear about it at all.” He also took an online quiz to help him find schools that would be a good fit for him and remembers the results. “You are interested in a small school with a good campus and a good community. Lipscomb might be for you.”

So he did some more research and decided to include Lipscomb on his Common App. When he finally made it to campus for a visit, it didn’t disappoint. “The tour guides that I had...they did such a phenomenal job capturing the spirit of Lipscomb, and I was just instantly attracted. They sold it perfectly.”

During New Student Orientation, his Quest Team leader even recruited him to work for Admissions. And now that he’s here, the experience has been everything he hoped for. He even spent a semester studying abroad in Costa Rica.

I’ve gotten here, I’ve made so many friends and built so many connections. I don’t regret it at all.”

FIND YOUR PLACE.

Every day, Lipscomb’s campus comes alive with activity—events in Bison Square, ENO hammocks on a spring day, classes and organizations meeting all over campus. The buzz of student life is undeniable. With 100 clubs and organizations on campus, you’re sure to find something that interests you.

The Student Activities Board , a student-led organization, is the force behind many of the events and activities on campus, including traditions like Singarama, a long-standing Lipscomb favorite, and the annual dodgeball tournament in the courtyard of Fanning Hall.

Greek life at Lipscomb functions through 10 social clubs for men and women. Experience club traditions passed on from class to class, give back to the community through leadership and philanthropic opportunities and do it alongside friends that will last a lifetime.

What can I do on campus?

WHAT GROUNDS US IS WHAT GROWS US.

At Lipscomb’s core is a community rooted in Christ. Spiritual formation is an important component of a complete education. Our Office of Spiritual Formation focuses on developing an atmosphere on campus that welcomes searching questions and champions spiritual growth.

As you attend The Gathering , our weekly chapel service, you can hear from a variety of speakers within our community as well as guests on a diverse range of topics. Breakout Chapel groups provide a more personal forum for discussion and dialogue with your peers that encourages curiosity and considers the perspectives of each member. Some of these groups even meet in the homes of faculty and staff who want to model hospitality and connect with you in a setting away from campus.

You can do anything here.

Marin Brown (’26) knew where she wanted to go to college her whole life, but she didn’t end up there. During Marin’s junior year of high school, her best friend was thriving as a freshman engineering major at Lipscomb and invited Marin to come for a visit—she immediately fell in love with campus.

“Walking this campus I just felt at home,” she remembers. "I felt a click in my heart that I was supposed to be here. I knew that here I would be safe, I would belong, and I could work for something greater.”

That summer, she applied and was accepted to participate in Lipscomb’s Summer Scholars program, an 8-day residential learning experience where students can earn college credit and guaranteed acceptance to the university. That made her college search process much less stressful.

So she used her spare time to found a nonprofit organization called SOLO, which stands for Saving Our Lives Ourselves. Through SOLO, Marin serves children in rural counties close to her home through spiritual and emotional development that helps them discover what they want to be and see what success looks like.

Adjusting to college life meant taking some time away from SOLO, but she hopes to start programming again this summer. In the meantime, Marin has gotten involved on campus as a student ambassador for Admissions, through the Office of Intercultural Development and as a member of SGA Freshman Council, Black Student Union and the Vine at Nine Chapel. And she has big dreams to make the world a better place.

“When I was walking this campus on that Lipscomb Friday my junior year of high school, I just knew I could do anything here.”

“Wherever you are, you need to feel like you can thrive and succeed. You need to feel like you’ll belong and go places—not just because of the degree but because of the people. You just have to feel like you can do anything.”

“Visit campus as much as possible. Sit in on classes. Eat in the cafeteria. Witness the community in action. Put yourself in a student’s shoes. It’s really hard to witness the community here unless you’re on campus seeing it firsthand.”

Support and encouragement to find your path.

During her college search, Ashlyn Holmes (’24) realized the value of a Christian education, and the supportive community at Lipscomb worked with her to help make that possible.

“When I was in high school, I toured like 20 or 30 schools. I went crazy,” Ashlyn says. She applied to 10 schools and narrowed it down to a final three. After committing to another school, Ashlyn learned that she had been selected as a Trustee Scholar, Lipscomb’s most prestigious scholarship that awards full tuition.

As she weighed two full-tuition scholarship offers at different schools, Ashlyn was struck by the encouragement she received from everyone at Lipscomb during the college search process.

“Everyone I talked to, above anything else, they were praying over me,” she remembers. “Before anything, they would pray that I made the right choice, and they weren’t praying that I would come to Lipscomb. They were praying that I would find peace in whatever I chose. It felt like Lipscomb wanted the best for me .”

Because of that genuine care for her well-being, Ashlyn committed to Lipscomb, where she works on the Quest Team, is a member of Phi Sigma social club and service coordinator for the Lipscomb Student Nurses Association.

“The minute I moved in on Move-In Day, I hit the ground running and have loved it ever since. I’ve never looked back.”

LEARNING GOES FAR BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.

While you’ll spend plenty of time in the classroom, every person you meet, every place you go presents an opportunity to enrich your education.

As you work through the general education requirements, the Office of Academic Advising will work with you to create a schedule that provides a broad learning experience. Peter Accounting

Where connections open doors.

When Peter Backer (’23) was a freshman in high school, he came to Nashville for a baseball camp, then returned as a junior to visit colleges, fully set on a particular school. But the campus tour just didn’t feel right. So he and his family left and scheduled an appointment to visit Lipscomb.

“I literally walked on campus and told my mom I was going to go here,” Peter remembers. “I love this place. I fell in love with it. Since that tour, I’ve never looked back on the decision to come to Lipscomb.”

For Peter, what stood out about Lipscomb was the community. During his campus tour, he noticed that no one seemed to walk to class alone and that lots of students and professors were having coffee and conversations outside of class. As a student at Lipscomb, Peter has experienced a community true to what he observed as a visitor.

“I think the great thing about Lipscomb is even though I feel like I met so many people during QuestWeek, I don’t feel like there’s been a week in my college experience that I’ve gone without meeting someone new or getting to know someone better,” Peter says.

That includes relationships with professors like Earl Lavender and J.P. Conway in the College of Bible & Ministry and Steven Sedberry and Alison Duke in the College of Business who invited him and his classmates to dinner in their homes. And as a manager at a local Chick-fil-A, he’s even connected with well-known musicians like lead singer of Florida Georgia Line Tyler Hubbard, Mat Kearney and Ben Rector.

He also works as a tour guide for Admissions, is a member of Theta Psi social club, Ethos Church worship team and just started an internship at a local accounting firm.

“Every college will have strong academic programs. Any college you go to will get you that degree you want. It’s a matter of how they get it to you and how valuable the other parts of that degree are.”

Lipscomb Athletics

Whether on the court, the pitch, the diamond or the track, the Lipscomb Bisons compete to win, and with 17 NCAA Division I teams, there’s always something to cheer for. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a sea of purple, you’ll be part of something that brings the entire campus community together.

Student Government Association

Be a voice for your peers as a member of SGA. This group of student leaders represents the interests of the entire student body and works together with university administration to sustain a culture that values every person and makes the best interests of each student the No. 1 priority.

Office of Intercultural Development

With over 40 countries represented on campus, the Office of Intercultural Development unifies, uplifts and educates our community to create an environment where your culture is celebrated and every voice matters.

RALLY THE HERD.

Being a Bison means supporting one another and leading in a community where everyone is welcome.

What can I do off campus?

MUSIC CITY IS SO MUCH MORE.

For music lovers, there’s no better place than Nashville. Live music abounds. You can hear talented musicians at venues all across the city, and seeing a show at Ryman Auditorium should definitely be on your bucket list.

But there’s so much more that makes our city special. You can discover arts and culture at every turn—museums, art galleries, architecture and more. Get to know the vibe of the many neighborhoods like 12 South and East Nashville , and you’ll discover distinctive and unique shops, boutiques and restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, the food scene is second to none, and it’s not just hot chicken (though that’s delicious too). When you need to get off campus, grab some friends and find a new place to explore for an adventure.

In addition to the Bisons, everyone comes together to root for the city’s sports teams— the Nashville Predators (hockey), Nashville SC (soccer), Nashville Sounds (baseball) and Tennessee Titans (football).

Elliot

Discover a place with endless opportunities.

After essentially growing up on Lipscomb University’s campus, Elliot Jones (’23) was set on going to school anywhere else.

With a mom who works on campus and an older sister who attended Lipscomb, Elliot thought she already knew everything about the university and wanted to go out of state for a new adventure away from her hometown.

“I had something in me that really wanted to look at other schools, which I think was one of the greatest things I could have done because it kept me openminded and let me see what I wanted and why I wanted that,” she says.

When she moved into Elam Hall her freshman year, Elliot instantly found community. She is a member of Phi Sigma, a social club, and is currently student teaching at a local high school as part of her education curriculum. And it turns out, staying close to home in Nashville has only enriched her college experience at Lipscomb. “I’ve grown up in Nashville my entire life, and I’ve yet to be bored of this city.”

And it turns out, staying close to home in Nashville has only enriched her college experience at Lipscomb. “I’ve grown up in Nashville my entire life, and I’ve yet to be bored of this city.”

“I quickly realized that the college visit and actually going on campus is one of the most beneficial things you can do in your college search process. You can read statistics over and over again and learn about things online, but you’re never going to really understand the college until you’re physically there.”

A university that seeks you out

When Julia Carvalho Correa (’23) began her college search, she knew she wanted to attend school abroad but never imagined she would find a home almost 5,000 miles from her hometown

After studying abroad in Indiana during high school, Julia returned home for her senior year and immediately realized she wanted to go back to the U.S. for college. Julia worked with an exchange agency to help her find schools that would be a good fit, and her advisor suggested Lipscomb, so she applied.

“I got a call from my advisor, and she said, ‘Hey, remember Lipscomb? They are sending an admissions counselor down here to see you.’ And I was like, ‘What?! They’re sending somebody from all the way up there down here just to meet me? That’s crazy,’” Julia recalls.

That made an impression. Even though Julia never visited in person, she felt called to Lipscomb and saw campus for the first time on Move-In Day.

She quickly found her place. Now Julia manages the Admissions tour team and is a member of the Quest Team, International Students Board, Raices (Hispanic Heritage Club), and the W.E.B. DuBois Intercultural Honor Society. She was a member of the inaugural President’s Student Advisory Council, currently serves as executive treasurer for Pi Delta social club and works as an intern for GEODIS, a global supply chain and logistics company, whose Americas headquarters are located in Middle Tennessee.

“I never imagined that I was going to be this involved on campus.” But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Don’t try to take college by yourself. The university is here for you. And that’s the good thing about a small university. They can really focus on you and really plug you in.”
wherever you are.

INVEST IN YOURSELF.

A college education is an investment, and you should expect it to pay off in the form of internship and job opportunities, graduate school acceptance and a network of people that will support you for the rest of your life.

Lipscomb can make all of that possible. The average financial aid package for first-time freshmen covers more than half of the total cost of attendance, which means increased value for you. A Lipscomb degree resonates in the marketplace, and Nashville is the second hottest job market in U.S., according to The Wall Street Journal , with major corporations like Amazon and Oracle moving to our city.

With a Lipscomb degree, you can follow in the footsteps of other alumni and work for companies like Apple, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Healthcare Corporation of America and many more. Or attend prestigious graduate schools like Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Princeton, just to name a few.
