Lipscomb Missions Short-term trips with a long-term vision. Give to our student and team leader Scholarship Fund at www.lipscomb.edu/missions.
Welcome
Thank you for joining us for Summer Celebration, Lipscomb University’s spiritually-focused annual lectureship that has drawn Christians to campus from across the country more than 90 years. Whether you are a first-time visitor or you attend Summer Celebration annually, I am honored to welcome you to Lipscomb! If you have not been on campus recently, a few significant construction projects may be new to you. The large construction zone south of the Ezell Center, where the 33,000-square-foot George Shinn Event Center is located, is nearing completion. We anticipate hosting several Summer Celebration lectureships in the facility’s collaborative classrooms, studio space and state-of-the-art event hall next year. Many of you are enjoying our newest residential facility, Bison Hall, a 172-bed facility with a private bathroom for every two-person room. We are proud to offer it as a lodging option for guests of Summer Celebration. In addition to these three days in the summer, Lipscomb works to nurture spiritual formation in its students and the campus community throughout the school year. Besides weekly chapel services and Bible classes, I am proud to say that our students step up and practice a spontaneously selfless, active faith when opportunities arise. In 2017 a Crowdfunding campaign raised $61,000 to benefit students and their families who were victims of various hurricanes in that year, and student-led support continued in 2018 when Hurricane Michael devastated the Florida coast. Then just weeks later, when a mass shooting took the life of a Pepperdine University student and wildfires threatened the California campus this past fall, students and faculty gathered in Bison Square to pray for the safety and comfort of those involved. Through intentional, personal contact with current students and prospective students, faculty in the College of Bible & Ministry have attracted more students who have a sense of call into the vocation of
ministry, boosting their numbers of undergraduate Bible majors by 40 percent from fall 2017 to fall 2018 and boosting the number of freshmen and transfers declaring their major as Bible by 178 percent. The university appointed a new associate professor of worship ministry in December, Randy Gill, a nationally recognized worship leader and musician. He is leading a revamp of the worship ministry program and will collaborate with church leaders to develop a touring musical group and new programs. Throughout the school year, hundreds of students participate in global mission trips and during the summer thousands of students from across the nation attend Impact, Lipscomb’s summer spiritual camp for teens. Other students, from racially diverse backgrounds and the churches of Christ, come to campus for the Engage Youth Theology Initiative, where they explore racial justice and healing. Finally, more than 300 theologians from across the nation gather on Lipscomb’s campus for three out of every four years to present their theological research and practice at the Christian Scholars Conference. I invite you to learn more about who we are by returning when the students are on campus. Feel the energy, enjoy one of the many special events held on campus, worship with us at a chapel gathering, sit in on a Bible class, meet our students. I think you will agree that we are at the top of our game! Again, it is an honor to have you on campus for Summer Celebration. May you be renewed and transformed as together we celebrate the Word of God!
L. Randolph Lowry President, Lipscomb University
From the Summer Celebration Team Welcome to Summer Celebration 2019! For nearly a century,* people from across the country and around the world have gathered at Lipscomb University for what is truly “a festival of faith and fellowship for the family of God.” We are very glad you are here, as our honored guests, for these special three days! Two things we know: First, your FAITH will be enriched! This year’s theme, “The Holy Spirit Poured Out,” will open our eyes even wider to the incalculable gift we receive when we become Christians (Acts 2:38). God’s Word will be proclaimed in a wide variety of ways, all day, each day. We will be challenged, encouraged and equipped by this inspiring study, which will provide rich and practical insights for the opportunities and obstacles we face daily. More than 100 keynotes, classes, seminars, exhibits and meal programs will strengthen and bless our lives. Also, the FELLOWSHIP will be priceless! All ages and all parts of the nation and the globe will be represented at Summer Celebration. What binds us together is our love for the Lord, along with our desire to be more like Him. Each year, invaluable relationships are renewed, and new relationships are established. It’s a large “family reunion” for the people of God! We encourage you to take advantage of the wide variety of activities, and we hope you’re already planning to be here Friday evening for the Bison Block Party on the Allen Arena Mall which ends with a fireworks display you won’t want to miss. Many are working hard to make sure you have what you need to enjoy these precious days to the fullest. Expect a fresh encounter with the Holy Spirit…poured out for restoration, reconciliation and renewal. Thank you for coming! Walt and Scott
