A

s a NYC / Brooklyn graffiti writer growing up in the early 80's, I first met Wayne “Frosty Freeze” Frost at the 100th Birthday celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was an important moment in NYC history, but for me it would become an important moment to meeting a true school hip hop icon, (that would last for 24 years of friendship). In the summer of 1983 I was planning on going to the big birthday celebration bash for the Brooklyn bridge. I went to the event with several other graffiti writers from the crew known as the vamp squad. It was me (Wrists.), Ron One, and Sec 127. Upon arriving in the city, we ran into Reddie Red, Saint 5, Basic 5 and Beno, (also members of the vamp squad). The event was crowded and people were partying and playing boom and smoking trees, when all of a sudden I pulled out a (Rust-O-Lium) can of Spray paint and took a tag on the Brooklyn Bridge. When I turned around and looked at the crowd there were like fifty people looking to take a tag, one of those writers was Frosty Freeze. At the time, 1983 had been my best year as a writer and for the most part, I was up through out the city. So when I saw Frosty taking a tag, in my mind, I was like "Yo, he's an IRT writer." He then introduced himself to me, Ron & Second, and had already known who we were since we too were bombing the IRT's at the time. Frosty was a gangly slim brother from the upper west side of Money Making. He was slim, dark and had the same crazy Afro he sported on Wild Style and Style Wars. He carried his famous slim dual cassette radio player and was playing all those now classic tapes from the Roxy, Dancenteria and Harlem World. We hit it off from the start, but my boy Ron wanted to

vamp him for his radio and cassette tapes, I wanted no part of the skeme and told Ron to chill, and so he chilled. Frosty on the other hand had a bag of zootie and invited us to puff it and off we went to City Hall park. After that we jumped the turnstiles at Park Place and talked about hooking up in the City the next day. My two boys were like, "Don't trust him, he's from uptown." Back in the days, writers, breakers and b-boys were very territorial about there hood, but I was like na, I'm a go up town and see what's good. The next day I met Frosty at the 14th st IRT station around noon. We went up town and the rest became history. For the next 24 years, me and Frosty Freeze would become great friends and brothers. I met so many brothers from the up town circuit through Frosty Freeze; from Grand mixer DST, Dj Red Alert, Charlie Ahern, Bear 167, Min One, Dez (Aka: The Drama King), the Rock Steady Crew, and the Cold Crush Brothers. He took me to clubs like the Roxy, Dancenteria, the Cave, (aka: First Class) in the Bronx and the Limelight. He was one of the coolest brothers I'm proud to have had him in my life, and since his passing, I miss him dearly. As a B-boy Frosty made his mark in film documentaries like Wild Style, Style Wars, the Freshest Kids and most notably Flash Dance, and while the world knew him as a breaker, I knew him as a graffiti writer, an underground artist who put his name up on the subway of New York City for all to see. In the end, he died with very few friends by his side, sadly to say, we all turned our backs on him when he needed us the most, and in spite of all the demons we all faced growing up during the 80's, even the ones that Frosty faced on a daily basis, he will always be remembered in my heart as a true hip hop pioneer, artist, b-boy, brother and friend who I will miss very dearly. May you forever Rest In Peace. GOD BLESS!!!

TO

THE PRESENT

The TPA crew was most active during the late 1970s all the way thru and including thru the late 1980’s. Today, The Public Animals thrive on 5 continents and is active in the evolution of graffiti as an accepted urban art form. TPA was founded in 1976. The main founding members of TPA resided in Queens, New York which along with Brooklyn was the birthplace of the mightiest NYC graffiti crews to

emerge during the art form’s early hey-days. Bedrock (Queens) 3rd RAIL, IZ THE WIZ, DESKYES, PHAT and EXIST (the last 3 from New and Gunsmoke (Brooklyn), produced NCB, BYB, TOP, TC, (The big 4), Zealand), KAP, LUST, and KIZER from Israel, BOM-5, WEZ, EZO, PW, TON ONE, ACE 530, 3MI, FDT-56, FLAME-3, KELZO and ATER (both from and the grandest crew of them all, TPA - The Public Animals. England), TOXIC (Wales), DJ FUZZ, KR-1, DON ONE, PN-1 aka BIG PETE 155, KIK, RIP, SAVAGE-1, FUZZ ONE, THREAT, PEAK, PG 3, BABY 168, LADY TPA was an all-city crew, highly visible on all three subway PINK, LADY HEART, SIR, CER, and EZRA from Switzerland, SCOP, EKO, divisions, the IRT’s, The BMT’s and primarily the IND’s. The TPA Crew went all-city, using all techniques including throw-ups, PUBO, CEK 7, WISE 3, BREAK, VERSOE from Finland, SME, PROPS and wildstyles and inside domination. TPA was also quite prolific KEZAR (all from Germany), OROS and BRON (Spain), and OMEN the in surface coverage, encompassing all the bridges, highways, Koolaid Killa, aka the Peppermint Pimp. buses, rooftops and available walls possible throughout During the early days, TPA’s membership numbered in the high the tri-state area. hundreds and at times, was close to 1100 strong, spanning all NYC city streets, yards and lay-ups. The first 3 members of the TPA crew Anywhere you went, you would see a TPA tag were VADE aka ORBIT, DEMO aka M3, and JOEY or meet a TPA crew of guys or associates. You TPA aka RC. The Daddy and leader, could not take a train, a bus, or talk to anyone VADE passed away too young, and in the graffiti community without TPA coming is remembered fondly by survivup in plain view or in the conversation. Today, 33 ing members and other 1970’s writers. years later, and 37 years after JOEY TPA took up his Today, DEMO resides on the Atlantic seaboard first graffiti tool in grammar school way back in 1972, The in the Eastern United States while Joe-188 or JOEY TPA Public Animals still thrives on 5 continents – Australia has taken residence in another graffiti-rich big Ameriand New Zealand, Europe, Africa, South America and of course can city, Chicago, Illinois. He is currently the driving force behind the resurgence and proliferation of the North America. The Public Animals have been featured in countless magazine articles, interviews, movies TPA WORLDWIDE movement. and videos. The legacy continues stronger Other notable TPA membership from the than ever, thanks to great writers, loyal international association, and strong 1970’s thru the present includes leadership. but is not limited to: KC-3, ENSO (Brazil), KC-5, SPICER, Today, Joe says, “It was destiny for me to create KID-56, TORA, SYEK and BATTLE-BOOTS(the last a beautiful panorama of international membership 3 from Australia), DJ of people from all continents, races, genders, colors

and ages. It was a dream destined for reality. I wanted to bring together an assortment of individuals of different styles and cultures. Graffiti and the urban art form are both larger than any one crew or individual, and TPA can do its part to bring it all together and help the traditional art community respect and recognize this form as something that is here to stay. We’ve come a long way from the early 70’s to the here and now in the 21st century!” Apparently, under Joe’s stewardship, TPA has done just that and more. On another important note, Joe and TPA Productions, LLC have inspired and supported a successful clothing brand - Street Level Nine. SL-9 also has its origins in the streets of NYC, graffiti and the urban lifestyle. SL-9 gear can be found in stores around the country as well as in Europe. The list of U.S. stores is growing and can be found on the SL-9 website. For those areas and merchants not yet carrying the SL-9 collection, purchases can easily be made on www.sl-9.com for shopping convenience. The website also gives a supporting link to its European distributor for those of you not in the continental United States. Be sure to check out Street Level Nine and take it from this author – the gear is sharp! Big ups to Joe and the rest of the Street Level Nine Team for giving us a bold new look. Words by JOE TPA

Interviewed By SIE

I wanted to do this interview to clear some shit about this COPE and FEC beef cause I’m getting tired of people asking me about it all the time. First of all, FEC is not down with G.O.D., BKLYN or BRONX. FEC is a dude that grew up where we from in BKLYN and thats it! When he went over COPE at the Hall of Fame, we tryed to get the shit deaded for him cause to keep it real he been out the game too long and he ain’t built for no drama like that. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s alright as far as a person to kick it too but when FEC went and hit COPE’s block he made it personal and he made alot of people upset in COPE’s camp and mine. I came back out for the love of graff and I definitely don’t want it to be my downfall.

TELLS HIS SIDE OF THE STORY...

I’m not the one for all this bullshit, especially when I got people asking me about it that I know won’t hold hot water if we do them something. Me and COPE always been cool, I know he got people putting shit in his ear like they put shit in mines. I’m gonna say it like this, them dudes that talk shit are straight bitches, they know who they are, you could never put a battery in my back. I come to these show on some real humble shit cause the oldschool nigga’s know me, I’ll let someone have it quick and I ain’t trying to take it there. As long my family don’t get violated everything is good. I respect everybody in this game wheather you up or not but don’t disrespect G.O.D. COPE2, OVIE, JEZ and anybody else

that pushes G.O.D. from the Bronx is family. And one more thing, the beef with me and RESKEW is dead and thats all I gotta say about that. I got alot of respect for the work that crew put in. Thanks to Liquidteks Magazine for letting me speak. SO HOW LONG YOU BEEN WRITING? BRING US UP TO DATE ON WHEN YOU STARTED & WITH WHO YOU STARTED WITH... I OFFICIALLY STARTED MY GRAFFITI GAME IN 1981.I DIDN’T TAKE MY FIRST TAG ON A TRAIN TILL FOUR YEARS LATER IN THE BRONX. I GREW UP IN BROOKLYN IN BY LIBERTY AVENUE ON THE CC’S IN THE 70’S UNTIL LATE 70’S WHEN I MOVED UP TO THE BRONX. MY TRANSITION AS A BOMBER TO PIECING DIDN’T TAKE PLACE UNTIL NOW. BACK THEN I STARTED LOOKING AT KCONER…THE LIKES OF MEEK CNA…ATOM1…DURO, DONDI, PADE, IZ, BURN AND OTHERS. I HAD THE J’S, M’S. LL’S, A’S, K’S AND H TRAINS TO LOOK AT. I ALSO HAD THE 3 TRAIN WHERE I USED TO GO TO MY BOY HOUSE ELSE 168 AND HANG WITH LUTE ON VAN SICLEN AVE. BY THAT TIME HENRY’S BOOK CAME OUT AND IT WAS A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME. I HAD IT GOOD BECAUSE I WASN’T LIMITED TO JUST THE LETTER LINE. DUSE WAS A BIG INFLUENCE BECAUSE HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST GUYS TO SHOW ME GRAFF ON A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL. DUSE WAS DOING ACRYLIC PAINTING ON LOOSE LEAF PAPER. THIS WAS BACK IN 83. I LEFT BROOKLYN BUT IN REALITY I NEVER LEFT BECAUSE I WAS BACK IN THE HOOD EVERY WEEK IN THE SUMMER AND WEEKENDS DURING THE SCHOOL SEASON. I WAS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR BREAK TPA BECAUSE HE WAS INTO CATCHING A VAMP. IT WAS WHAT IT WAS BACK THEN. MY FIRST OFFICIAL BOMBING TEAM WAS ELSE168, DUSE, PENT, NEVONE, RUEL, SAZ1 AKA DETER…DIE (RIP) STAZ BAR,BOZZYBOZ, AND MAY2 WS. THIS WAS BACK IN 84 AND OFFICIALLY IN THE BRONX. KEZ LIVED A FEW BLOCKS AWAY FROM ME AND HE HOOKED ME UP WITH CAC AND THEN I WAS MEETING OTHER WRITERS FROM THE LETTERS. RAZE AND I WENT TO CHELSEA HIGH SCHOOL AND HE WAS DOWN WITH CAC AND GOT DOWN WITH TNC AND THEN ALONG CAME SEZE RETARDS CREW WHO LIVED ON MY BLOCK AND THAT WAS IT, IT WAS ON FROM THERE ON.

RUMOR IS YOU HAVE A PRETTY ILL COLLECTION OF GRAF FLIX! WHETS THE WORD ON THAT? HOW DID YOU AMASS SUCH A COLLECTION? CAN YOU NAME SOME OF THE FEW PICS YOU HAVE THAT NOBODY HAS SEEN? IT’S NOT A RUMOR IS A FACT. I HAVE SOME SHIT THAT NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN BEFORE. I WOULD HAVE HAD A COMPLETE COLLECTION IF MOM DIDN’T THROW MY SHIT IN THE GARBAGE WHEN I GOT LEFT BACK FOR FUCKING AROUND WITH GRAFF AND NOT THE BOOKS. SHE GOT ME GOOD ON MY PERSONAL STUFF ROLLING WITH MEMBERS OF CAC CREW IN 175TH, GRANT, LIBERTY, SMITH AND 9TH , FT.HAMILTON, DEWEY YARD, 180TH , 155TH DOUBLE LAYUP AND OTHERS. I HAVE A FEW THAT WERE SAVED BUT I STILL HAVE MY FIRST BLACK BOOK AND YOU COULD SEE IT ON MYSPACE. BUT I MADE UP MY COLLECTION WITH THE QUICK FAST WITH THE HELP OF HENRY AND JUST GOING AROUND FLICKING EVERYTHING I SAW. SLIN 2 GOT ME ORGANIZED THOUGH. I HAVE TO GIVE HIM PROPS CAUSE HE BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY SENSES AND TOLD ME TO PUT ALL MY FLIXS IN A PORTFOLIO SO ITS WHERE IS AT NOW AND GROWING. I LOST COUNT BUT I ESTIMATE I HAVE OVER 20000 PICS. THAT INCLUDES STUFF FROM HENRY WHEN I USED TO GO TO HIS STUDIO AND A FEW FROM MARTHA’S REPRINTS, BUT THEY ARE OFFICIAL. THE BEST PART IS WHEN I DISPLAY THEM TO MY BOYS AND THEY START TO TRIP AND REMEMBER

WHAT THEY WERE DOING , WHO WAS DOING WHAT AND THIS AND THAT. THERE ARE SOME CLOWNS OUT THERE FLAPPING THEIR JAWS ABOUT COPYRIGHT THIS AND THAT OR THAT I’M PIMPING NIGGAS. YA NEED TO GET OFF THAT 50 CENTS BEER OR THAT DUST YA SMOKING BECAUSE MY JOINTS ARE OFFICIAL AND LEGIT AND IF ANYONE ONE WANT TO SEE ME ABOUT IT…THEN COME CORRECT AND BRING YOUR LAWYERS I GOT MY RECEIPTS ON MY COPYRIGHTS. I DON’T GIVE A FUCK WHETHER YOU SAW ME OR DIDN’T ON THE STATION OR IN THE LAYUPS OR IN THE YARD I GOT PICAS OF YOUR JOINTS AND YOU DON’T. MOTHERFUCKERS FEEL LIKE SHIT IS OWED TO THEM AND I HAVE JUST UP THE SHIT LIKE THAT. NOBODY GAVE ME SHIT EXCEPT FOR PEOPLE LIKE CHINO BYI,ATCO,SLIN2,SADE,BLADE, HENRY ,MARTHA, AND A FEW OTHERS. MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT. FOR THOSE THAT HATE THEN HATE…SHOULD HAVE COME CORRECT THE FIRST TIME………. WHAT/WHO GOT YOU INTO GRAFFITI? NET TBK TST…..NO DISRESPECT, BUT THAT MOTHERFUCKER WAS UP EVERYWHERE! BAR NONE. THAT CAT HAD THE MOST FLOW WITH HIS HAND STYLE. BECAUSE OF HIM I WAS INTO IT. I DIDN’T CARE FOR NO ONE ELSE BUT TO SEE HIM ON THE TRAIN IN 79-80. BUT THERE ARE OTHERS THAT JUST AMPED ME UP TO DO GRAFF SUCH AS GATO,EZ-E, JUBOY,RAE, SAINT, SAGO, REBEL, RAZE, KEZ, CHINO, RAB, TRIM TNC, DOLE, …SLAM, DEN, DESIRE, PLUS, BET, WADE, ORBI, THE REAL TEZ, DEMER, MEGA AAA CREW, AI. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU THINK OF GRAPH TODAY? ITS DEFINITELY HAS CHANGED, HOW IN YOUR EYES? WHY? IT’S COMPLICATED NOW. TOO MUCH OFF THIS INTERNET BEEF. BACK THEN NIGGAS WHERE PUNCHING EACH OTHER IN THE FACE OVER GRAFF. GOING FOR THEIRS. IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT BEING TESTED AND HOLDING YOUR OWN. YOU HAD TO BE ON YOUR TOES NO MATTER WHERE YOU WENT EITHER IN THE LAYUPS OR YARD OR JUST SNAPPING FLICKS ON STATIONS. NOW NIGGAS WANT TO BITE YOUR NAME AND CLAIM THIS AND THAT. THE WAY I SEE IT WITH THIS KID PUTTING UP MERK….C’MON. PLEASE. SO WHAT YOU PUTTING UP THROW UPS IN ROOF TOPS AND HAVE A LITTLE RUN HERE AND THERE. HE KNOWS WHERE EVER HE IS AT HE KNOWS HE’S A PHONY. I DON’T NEED TO TELL HIM ANYTHING CAUSE HE KNOWS, HE CLAIMS TO BEEN AROUND IN THE 90’S. COME ON NOW I WAS DOING MY SHIT FOR A MINUTE WITH TFO AND GOING ALL CITY WITH TYKE, SCRAP YARD, ROCKING PIECES WITH UW OR CHILLING WITH WHOEVER WAS DOING THEIR THING AT 238,THE PIT IN BROOKLYN, IT DIDN’T MATTER WHERE, NIGGAS KNOW ME, I NEVER HIDE. MY ADVICE FOR THIS KID AD A NUMBER LIKE 3 OR 4 TO THE END OF HIS TAG. ALSO I SEE A LOT OF FAMILIAR NAMES ARE COMING OUT AND DOING THEIR THING. IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE SOMEONE YOU KNOW COME BACK OUT AND REPRESENT. IT TAKES AWAY THE THOUGHT OF ALWAYS SAYING “ YO WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT NIGGA__________”? YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. NOW THAT GRAFF HAVE EXTENDED ALL OVER THE GLOBE AND MADE REAL GOOD FRIENDS IT’S COOL TO SEE THIS MOVEMENT FLOWING AND ALL THE NEW CREATIVITY A PERSON CAN MAKE. MY NIGGA LINZ, FROM AUSTRALIA IS A NEW SCHOOL WRITER AND HE HAS AN AMAZING TALENT. IMAGINE THIS NIGGA BACK IN THE DAYS…SHIT BE SMOKING. THEM GERMAN CATS DAIM AND HESH IN THE 90S ROCKED SOME 3D SHIT

IN SPITE ERNI(PADE) WAS ROCKING SHIT LIKE THAT IN THE 80S, THIS CAT MADE SOME WRITERS STEP UP TO THEIR GAME AND ROCK. GRAFF IS ALL ABOUT EVOLVING. YOU’VE DONE FREIGHTS, TRAINS, HANDBALL COURTS, TRUCKS ETC, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE & WHY? I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING AND ENJOYED THEM ALL. SOME I HAD MY BOYS ROCK A FEW PIECES FOR ME BUT YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN IF YOU WANT TO STAY IN YOUR GAME. I HAVE NO SHAME IN MINE, I SAY THE TRUTH. I HAVE DONE A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING. TRAINS, FREIGHTS, TRUCKS, HANDBALL COURTS, SCRAP YARDS. AFTER THE TRAINS DIED OUT, I HAD A LITTLE BOMBING SPREE WITH TYKE, RUEL, LOUIE 167 AND IT WAS GOOD WHILE IT LASTED. NOW THE SYSTEM WANTS TO INDICT YOU INTO THE SYSTEM AND MAKE YOU CRY. BACK THEN IT WAS YOU GET CAUGHT EITHER THE COP SPRAY PAINTED YOUR CLOTHES AND SNEAKERS OR GET A LIGHT ASS WHOOPING OR GET POPPED IN THE BACK OF THE KNEE. NOW YOU GET A CASE BUILD UP ON YOU AND YOU ARE DOING TIME. TRUST ME I KNOW HOW THIS SHIT WORKS. WHAT CREWS DO YOU REP TODAY AND WHY? ANY CREWS YOU USED TO REP BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED N YOUR NOT REPPIN IT NOW? I REP CAC TFO UW NSA TNC…….THEY ARE FAMILY TO ME. CAC CREW IS WHERE I LEARNED TO BE THE BOMBER THAT I WAS. I LEARNED MY ROPES WATCHING RAB, DOLE, SUEY, KEZ, RAZE, SEZE, BOZ, HP, SLAM & DESIRE DO THEIR THING. TFO, MY BOY TYKE AND I BONDED REALLY QUICK . WE ARE BOTH MILITARY AND WE JUST HAD ONE MISSION…BOMB AND CATCH A VIC. UW, MAN THIS IS COMPLICATED BECAUSE I GOT DOWN WITH KINGBEE IN CHURCH…YOU BELIVE THAT SHIT …OUT OF ALL PLACES TO MEET. I LEARNED A LOT WITH KINGBEE AND BELIEVE ME IF IT WASN’T FOR UW A LOT OF CATS YOU SEE NOW UP FROM THE TRAIN WOULD NOT BE OUT. WE GAVE SOME CATS A FRESH CHARGED TO PAINT ON THE STREETS. WE WERE GOING EVERYWHERE AND DROP A PIECE IN ANYONES NEIGHBORHOOD. YOU COULD SAY WE WERE THE FIRST “ YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD NEXT” TYPE CREW CAUSE WE ROCKED IT IN EVERY BORO. I HAVE THE PICS TO PROVE IT. NIGGAS LIKE NEVONE, HOZE, CINE, JEW, VASE, NIC1, BRAME, DYLAN, JACER, CEE, LADY DI, CHASM, WERE ROLLING DEEP. NOW I LOST TRACK OF WHO IS DOWN, BUT IT IS ALL GOOD BECAUSE WE ARE STILL FRESH. AS FOR THE CREWS THAT IM NOT DOWN WITH OR DONT REP….WHO CARES IM STILL MERK ONE! NSA….ALL MY ROOTS ARE TIED TO NSA…..EVERYONE FROM BROOKLYN IS TIED TO NSA. IT’S A DIFFERENT WAY OF GRAFFITI LIFE. THAT’S ALL I KNOW. IT WASN’T ABOUT HOW WELL YOU PIECED OR BOMBED. IT WAS ALL ABOUT BEING THERE AND REPRESENT NO MATTER WHAT.

Greetings From The NJ Graff Hall of Fame To a number of graffiti writers and its spectators "Dezo's Spot" has become a special place for legalized graffiti murals. On a small dead end street down I95 on the Jersey Shore this spot has become known as The NJ Graff Hall of Fame. Back in 1994 the director of a school for disabled adults granted me full permission to paint aerosol murals on the school. The conditions of me keeping the building to paint was simple; No littering ( no problem-a dumpster is on site),and on 2 of the sides the art can't contain nudity or politics- again not a problem. One of the coolest things with the walls is that the NJ Transit has a main rail so every passenger can see the graf clear as day; especially now with the double decker trains. 14 years of buff later I still paint literally almost every weekend either by myself doing productions and solo pieces or writers will call me and we'll do walls together. There are the regulars who come out paint at least every month if not every weekend to the writers who are traveling abroad and make my spot a stop on their travels. Many times whole crews will come out and do large scale productions. Some of the writers who have come down in the past are: Part, Smith, Doc TC-5, Totem, West, Risk, Child R.I.P., Dontay, Doves, Demer, Wane, Enue, Pyscho TC-5, Nace, Sye TC-5, Louie 167, Tyke, Smash, Can 2, Mad C, Shiro, Acet, Themo, Snake, Tracy 168, Flint, Cornbread, Lobo, Kase 2, Wasp, Det, Bem, Tatu, Clyde and numerous others, way too many to list! The spot has also become a great place for authors and photographers like Jon Naar, Riccardo Barrios, Jim and Karla Murray (& Tabasco) and a some others. A hot band from Jersey called Underground Logic also does a lot of photo and video shoots down here (check 'em out online). I let the walls run anywhere from days to months. Many artists including myself post flicks of the walls they did online so check some out and see for yourself! Peace

MK A Y KTC W

hen and how did you get your tag? I STARTED WRITING MK, MKAY IN 1982 THE GOLDEN ERA OF GRAFFITI, THE BEST TIME TO BE A GRAFFITI WRITER. THE MAIN REASON THAT ATTRACTED ME TO WRITE GRAFFITI WAS WHEN I USED TO WALK TO SCHOOL I ALWAYS PASSED BY THE 241ST YARD. WHEN I SAW ALL THE WHOLE CARS AND THROW UPS DOWN THE LINE, I SAID TO MYSELF I GOTTA DO THAT!! SO I STARTED COMING UP WITH MY NAME MK!! MY NAME IS MIKE, SO I TOOK THE M AND THE K AND STARTED WRITING MK. THEN I STARtED TO BOMB THE TRAINS IN 1983, INSIDES AND OUTSIDES, RAGGING SHIT!!! I USED TO GO UNDER THE 238TH STREET BRIDGE, THATS WHERE ALL THE GRAFF WRITERS USED TO PIECE AND BOMB. MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH GRAFFITI WAS WHEN I USED TO GO UNDER THE 238THST BRIDGE WITH MY BROTHERS CAV, KEY & TIM aka TIDE MPC. WE USED TO BOMB EVERY WALL IN SITE UNDER THAT BRIDGE!! I GOT MY PIECING STYLE FROM SHAME125TH AND MY THROWUP STYLE FROM CAP MPC, WHO I MET IN 1983 WHEN HE PUT ME DOWN WITH HIS CREW MPC, PLUS I WENT UP WITH HIM BOMBING MANY TIMES!! MY TAG STYLE I MADE UP MYSELF, TRUE OLD SCHOOL STYLE. MY STYLE IS THE SAME EVEN TIL NOW IN THE NEW MILLENIUM. Name some of the writers you rolled with... BETWEEN 1984-85 I WAS BOMBIN AND Piecing ALOT GOING UP WITH ALOT OF WRITERS LIKE POVE, DES, ACE, TATs, SENT, REAS, GHOST, WANE, TKID, AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON!! I HAD SO many GRAFF PARTNERS THRU OUT THE YEARS, TONE GU, LIMO, SM, ACE TAC, EVOL, DES KTC. BETWEEN 85-87 THOSE YEARS I WAS GOING UP TO THE HARLEM TUNNELS ALOT WITH SHAME125, TATS CRU, DES KTC, GHOST & WANE COD DOING ALOT OF WHOLE CARS AND BOMBIN ALOT THE REST OF THE NIGHT. THEN DES KTC AND I WERE GOING UP TO YARDS AND LAYUPS ALOT!!! THEN SENT TFP WOULD COME OVER MY HOUSE TO PLAN A COUPLE OF MISSIONS TO GO WITH ME. ALL NITE MISSIONS AND WE ALWAYS CAME OFF WITH NICE PIECES ON THE TRAINS. THEN SENT AND I WOULD PLAN SOME WALLS TO DO. THE GOOD THING ABOUT SENT WAS HE

32

ALWAYS CAME PREPARED WITH THE OUTLINES THE PAINT AND A NICE WALL! SENT ALWAYS TOOK HIS TIME WITH HIS PIECES and THEY Always CAME OUT NICE. PLUS I WAS ALWAYS KNOWN FOR BRINGING THE MOST PAINT! IM NOT GONNA LIE WHEN IT CAME TO PAINT I ALWAYS SUPPLIED ALOT OF THE WALLS AND TRAINS THAT I DID. I WAS NEVER CHEAP WITH PAINT WHEN WRITERS WENT PIECING TO DO TRAINS WITH ME I ALWAYS BROUGHT THE MOST PAINT FOR THAT NITE!! THE OTHER WRiTERS WOULD BRING SOME PAINT BUT I ALWAYS CAME THRU WITH 20 OR MORE CANS EVERY COLOR YOU CAN THINK OF I BROuGHT!! SOMETIMES 2 OF EACH COLOR. THOSE WERE SUCH GOOD TIMES. BETWEEN 88-89 I WAS BOMBING ALOT OF CLEAN TRAINS THEN 90-91 I WAS BOMBIN ON AND OFF LIKE A LIGHT SWITCH MEANING I WOULD BOMB, THEN CHILL OUT FOR AWHILE THEN CONTINUE TO BOMB SOME MORE. TILL NOW I HAVE BEEN WRITING GRAFFITI ON AND OFF. I ALWAYS MAKE A COMEBACK JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW I AM STILL AROUND IN THE GRAFF SCENE! REMEMBER OLD SCHOOL FOR LIFE, WORD UP!!! Was there any jealousy or beef when Spraycan Art book came out? How did that happen, Were you commissioned by Henry to do it or was it just a photo he caught? THE WALL THAT I DID IN 1986 WITH DES KTC THAT GOT ME FAME IN SPRAYCAN ART WAS NOT COMMISsIONED BY HENRY. DES AND I JUST ROCKED THE WALL ONE DAY, WE ALREADY KNEW HENRY WAS MAKING A BOOK. SO WE PUT UP HENRY ON THE WALL & WHEN WE WERE DONE WITH THE WALL, DES AND I TOOK FLICS. THEN I CALLED HENRY AND HE CAME AND TOOK NICE SHOTS OF THE WALL. THEN THE REST IS HISTORY!! THEN I FOUND OUT DES AND I GOT IN THE BOOK WITH THE WALL, I WAS REAL HAPPY!! THEN ALL THE HATERS were RUNNING THERE MOUTH BECAUSE THEY DIDNT GET IN THE BOOK. I DIDNT CARE ABOUT WHAT THE HATERS HAD TO SAY AS LONG AS I GOT UP IN THE BOOK. THE NAME OF THE GRAFF GAME IS FAME!! WORD UP!!! but NO, I DIDNT GET NO BEEF WITH

WRITERS WHEN THE BOOK CAME OUT. Any Chase stories? CHASE STORIES I HAVE ALOT OF THEM!! HERE IS ONE OF THEM. IN 1984 ACE AND I WHERE PLANNING TO GO UP TO THE GHOST YARD AND ROCK SOME SILVER PIECES SO WE WERE ROCKING THE PIECES!! ALL THE PIECE NEEDED WAS HIGHLIGHT, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE, THEN THE TRAIN DOORS OPENED!! SO ACE AND I PACKED UP OUR PAINT THEN WENT UNDER THE TRAIN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LANE. WE SAW ABOUT 15-20 MTA WORKERS COMING OUR WAY SO I STARTED TO PICK UP SOME ROCKS AND EMPTY CANS OF PAINT AND STARTED TO THROW THEM AT THE WORKERS!! ACE SCREAMED AT ME AND SAID YOU CRAZY, LETS GET OUT OF HERE!! WHY ARE YOU PLAYING? SO THEN WE BOTH RAN INSIDE A SERVICE TRAIN! WE STAYED IN THERE FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR. THEN WHEN EVERYTHING GOT QUIET, WE RAN BACK TO FINISH THE PIECES, WHEN AGAIN WE SAW A COUPLE MORE WORKERS COMING BACK ON THE SAME LANE AS OUR PIECES WERE. SO THEN ACE AND I GOT MAD SO THEN EVEN ACE STARTED TO PICK UP ROCKS AND SHIT TO THROW AT THE WORKERS WE DID THAT WHILE WE WERE RUNNING THEN WE BOTH STARTED TO CLIMB ON TOP OF THE TRAINS TO ESCAPE FROM THE CRAZY ASS WORKERS, IT LOOKED LIKE A SCENE FROM THE WARRIORS MOVIE, THEY WASNT PLAYIN!! SO ACE AND I RAN SO FAST IT FELT LIKE MY HEART WAS IN MY MOUTH! SO AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES WENT BY RUNNING ON TOP OF THE TRAINS THROWING ROCKS AND SHIT AT THE WORKERS, WE BOTH CLIMBED DOWN TOWARDS THE EXIT OF THE YARD AND JETTED AWAY. WE WERE BOTH HAPPY WE GOT AWAY PLUS CAME OFF WITH SOME PIECES EVEN THOUGH THE PIECES NEEDED HIGHLIGHTS!! BUT FUCK IT THE MAIN THING IS WE GOT AWAY AND THE PIECES WERE OUTLINED. I NEVER GOT CHASED FROM OTHER WRITERS. BUT I GOT CHASED LOTS OF TIMES FROM TRANSIT COPS BUT ALWAYS GOT AWAY HAHAHA!!

o when and where did u start to write graffiti? I started to paint graffiti seven years ago when I was 14 years old.

40 28

What are you favorite colors? Favorite Paint? My favourite colors are light green, pink and purple, and silver. my favourite paint is montana colors and Belton.

I love painting graffiti but i think there are more important things in my life, I don’t live for painting, I live for my friends and family. What is your hood like? Give us a normal day in Barcelona. Are there more toys (wack writers) than there are Kings (Good writers)? I think people use the word “toy” too much. They call toy to a boy/girl who’s starting to paint, and call toy to some assholes... i think there are more good writers than toys. everybody has a chance in his life, and a child who’s starting to paint graffiti too.

Have you painted any where other than Barcelona? Yes i’ve painted in Madrid, Bilbao, Girona, London, Valencia...

Name some of the crews you are affiliated with (if not crews then people (tags)... I dont have crew, well..haha i’ve a crew with Laia called “Clot Kingas” but it’s only for joking but we usually put the name on our pieces.

What is your favorite thing to hit? Walls, trucks, gates? i like to paint walls with my friends most of all, and drink some beers and smoke a little. a like to do silvers in the city and in the train rails too. Is this a hobby or something you love doing?

Any last words or comments on the current world economy being from spain? Economy wouldn’t fuck me... I hope!!!

OES, I see that you are very active in the graffiti world out in BRASIL! What was it about graffiti that started your interest? I began to paint I believe that in the end of 1988, or THE beginNING of 1989, I was without painting for about 2 years, and I ended up coming back in 1995, to be sincere I don't know because I began to paint, but I affirm that is a thing that I don't intend to stop so early, it is part of my life. To paint more and more every day. I began only, after some time I went knowing other people, here in the BRAZIL was long, a lot for information to arrive. I see you have traveled to Paris, Germany, Spain among many other places to paint. Is this out of shear love of painting or were you paid to do commisioned walls out there? Really, that year I traveled to Europe, I met several countries, several cultures, very different from BRASIL, thing that I dreamed always in doing, but it was long a lot to happen, because it is very expensive to do that, but I placed that as

objective. i was in vacations, and all money that had it was in that they travel, everything for the graffiti. I love graffiti. It was a very good experience, and whenever has conditions of traveling I go. Being from San Paolo Bra- sil, are there any ex- pereiences you might want to with

crazy share us?

with a weapon in the head. But only had an abbreviation he talks and we were released. It already happened of the roof to break when was making a rooftop, but I ended up being stopped in the woods and I got to go down. Nowadays I don’t have many problems, I already had some, but not anything serious. The times it happens of being painting an illegal wall instead of a lot of circulation and it always ends up being stopped. Other than doing these elaborate walls that you create, do you go bombing, just dropping tags and bubble letter style fill-ins? What crews are you down with out there? Any international crews you represent? I like a lot to paint freights, I painted more than 250. That is a thing that I really like to do, I feel well, taste a lot of seeking supports to paint besides the walls, bus, rooftops, trucks. Crews I rep are HDV(Hora Do Vandalismo), IC(Intoxicação Corrosiva), TK(Todo Kanto) and Sl(Só Letras). The HDV has writers of Brazil, Chile, Spain, Portugal and Austria, but me that formed her.

Ever get caught by police? If so, how did that go? I had some things that happened for here, the some years we were making a roof- top, and I saw that the safeties were arriving, I went downstairs running and I was stopped

Any last words or shout outs? Firstly to God, the magazine Liquidteks for the Great opportunity, my wife Dninja, and all others that I know in the world of the graffiti!!!

CAC, give us a look at how it formed and who formed it. Who were the main members? The original CAC Boys was from across the Bridge (the Van Wyck) South Ozone Park. Jamaica, section of Queens. I resided on the other side , the Richmond Hill side. One day KayZee 5 came into the neighborhood (126th Street and 107th Ave). In fact I remember being on punishment and neighborhood writer IN2 knock on the door, speaking of these cats from across the bridge. He explained they put him down with CAC, made him a recruiter and now he was putting me down with CAC. At that time, I had already put work

42

What boro do you represent? Being you hit A D E F train insides you were all over but what boro do you represent & why? What were your favorites yards to hit? Why? Haha. I might be the bastard writer. I started out in Queens, my first bomb ever and original home was Grant. I moved to Harlem and 175th became my home, then moved to the Bronx. Now I resided In Yonkers. Im not sure where I represent.. I guess whom ever will have me but in all sincerity I feel more like a Bronx Boy then anything. My favorite Home was 175th. I don’t know what it was but I was at home there. I miss that place. Give the readers a feel on the environment around you when you were out bombing. Name some things you recall that you don’t see now! Back then, Graffiti was Hip Hop. When you bombed you felt you were doing something special. Rap was

new or Emceeing as us old heads called it so we had the perfect sound track. Going bombing rocking playboys, kangols leather fronts was all apart of the movement, those were great times man. Flomaster Ink, supermarket ink, krylons and rustos, does it get any better than that? Today I see young cats and I have to tilt my head to the left and think, Are you really a graffiti writer if you NEVER bombed a line?

Any funny yard stories? being chased or chasing someone out? Funny one. Let's see.. It was SLAM, SUEIEE, RAZE, KEZER and some kid who wrote DOP (Razer and Kezer friend). Slam put him down with CAC. We went to the D yard Bedford Park joint.. We're in there doing what we do best.. Bombing!! DOP takes it upon himself to go a car ahead. In his mind he wanted the good spots. HAHA, he don’t know us very well. The kid (DOP) is using red transparent ink everyone else is using black. His handwriting is hurt as hell (maybe he was rushing but... Nah, he was hurt. He wasn't worthy to be rocking CAC) So, as we entered a car... He leaves. We look at this kids tags.. With CAC attached. I'm dying laughing, this kid's handwriting was HURT. I point it out to Slam. Slam screams, "Yooo DOP, you docked! Don't throw up CAC anymore"! Sueiee and I, are snapping on his tags.. crying. We go to the next car and DOP is taking all the headboards (all the good spots) My spots! Now me, SLAM, RAZE, KEZ and SUEIEE have been doing this for years. No one has to tell us where to write and where not to write, whats my spots, whats Sue's spots.. It’s common knowledge. DOP on the other hand is out of control with his red ink. I begin to complain. My boy SUEIEE takes his rubber gloves and smears DOPs tag and writes his

name in the spot. Im Dying! So we all start doing the same... smear his red tag and write our tag in his spot. By the end of the bomb we have been doing it for so long, it's like a habit. we' re doing it in his face. Steady dying in laughs! Now the joke is.. this poor sap probably ran to school the next day and told his buddies he was bombing with the Great CACBoys (YES, I said it).. took his buddies to the nearest train station to show and prove. He sees everyones tags but his own! Saying to himself I know I went bombing with them but where's my shit. Hey the story always places a smile on my face. Who was your main partner? The bastard bomber had plenty partners.. My first partner was BO Drugs. I hope BO doesn’t get forgotten he put in major work and killed them CC's, Then came Rab who perhaps gets the obvious nod but also there was Sueiee and HP when I moved to Harlem.

You used a lot of ink, what was your favorite type of marker? Did you make your own? IF so, how? My favorite ink was FloMaster then Supermarket but I know I used tons of marsh. I made markers out of the original Ban roll on bottles and school issued erasers. Although I pinned many pilots and magnums. As I got older, I learnt to appreciate a chisel tip pilot or magnum. My Home-mades with the Ban Roll On Bottles (after it's emptied.. one way or another) You wash bottle out, if you have the time. Stick a pencil inside, snap the part of the pencil that sticks out of the bottle. Cut a school issued eraser strip in half with a knife or scissors. Bend eraser over pencil (the half of pencil that remains in the bottle keeps the eraser from sinking into the bottle). Add ink.

Enjoy! You can use a 35mm film container as a cap or simply take some aluminum foil, place over eraser, wrap foil with masking tape to create a cap Last words... I thought them days would last forever. I truly missed them for these were great times in my life. I set a goal and achieved it, I got up. Every now and again I run into an established artist who recognize what I have done and it makes it seem worth while. Also, every now again I run into cats who came after me, who I inspired and/or recognized my deeds and this too makes it all better. Give me my youth again and I will do it again... I think. ive us a brief history of how you got our name, I understand it wasn’t ur first choice. Indeed, at the time I was writing Delko. I was getting up on the A's and CC's. I noticed a Delk tag and in respects to him, I felt my name was too close to his. So, I search for a new name. I placed the letters that I felt comfortable with writing tossed and turned them until I came up with DOLE. Months later at Grant, I spotted a Dole167 tag which I believe was a Mane alias. I changed my name again to DILE. My partner at the time BO Drugs asked me, Was I going to change my name again, if there was a DILE? Deeper than just the words, I understood what BO was saying. I went back to Dole and claimed it, with the 167 attached and never looked back. If there's any resentment or ill will from Mane or anyone. I hope they see or noticed that I took the name and put in major work with it. Hey I could have been a bullshit writer.

in, I haven’t heard of CAC, I was an A and CC bomber so I was on some Whatever... Some YAWN shit. In fact I was very arrogant then, So I was on some.. who are you to put me down with a crew, let alone a crew I never heard of. But KayZee, Rab and Slam they came to our neighborhood and chilled with us. You would have to ask how boring was your neck of the woods for them to come a mile away to hang with us. Man, them cats never left. them became family. KayZee is like a big brother to me Slam and Rab, brothers. We have countless stories to tell, and great times. Despite this, I never claimed CAC until the end of Rab and I first all city tour. I remember being in the R tunnels telling Rab .. Okay I'm only going to put up CAC!

Rab

is a muslim name which is an attribute of Allah meaning ' master or teacher'. I never considered myself a teacher during my adolescence. In the sub-culture I grew up in New York City; now revered as 'Hip Hop'; we were all essentially followers/students. In those days of 1980; it was popular to jazz up your government name with a cool-sounding fling to it. If you wanted to be noticed in the area ('hood) you could not use a term of endearment name that your loving Grandma or Moms called you. entering the teenage life demanded that you be accepted by your peers. To differentiate the first name; people in the neighborhood added pre-titles such as 'Master'; 'Sweet'; 'Double' or adjectives ending in the letter 'y' such as 'Funky' or 'Jazzy'. What Usually followed was the first alphabetical letter of their first name. Later; end attachments such as 'ski'; or 'ster' were applied. I chose the latter. Rabster. In the Spring months of 1981; I began to copy the styles of tags in my neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens. I shuttled back and forth between neighborhoods in Brooklyn such as Red Hook and Bed-Stuy, but Southside Jamaica was the main rest in my childhood days. I remember seeing many tags with the prefix 'Lil'. It took me many years to figure out that these tags were from the early 70s. It also took me a while to figure out that this was short for 'Lil'. A title for a junior New York city gang member. I also began to notice other tags with more style such as Vade TPA; 00one; DY 167; Jester and BK BMS.

As most writes in New York City; my first tag was taken with an El Marko on my block. This later graduated to tags on stop sign poles; gates; telephone booths etc. Oddly enough; I don't remember tagging paper. I reserved that to duplicate Marvel comic book art; Heavy Metal mag art and early Japanese animé such as Battle of The Planets (G-Force). I was introduced to the terms tagging; bombing; flooded; lay-ups; yards and cans from the the white teenagers of Forest hills, Queens. In the early 70s, NYC began their contribution to 'desegregate' the public schools. South Jamaica had become a predominantly Black neighborhood by then. Schools had white teachers but Black students. We were bused to the white Schools of Forest Hills/Rego park to integrate. I do remember the the kids my age with their parents throwing bottles and paint on our yellow school buses. yep! Racism is a bitch. but I git the besyt of those white parents in the 70s when their same children in Junior high bonded with me to write Graffiti. W#hat those white parents feared that we 'Black' would spoil their 'perfect world'. little did they know that their sons were the people corrupting me and changing my life forever at 13 and 14 yrs old by introducing me to bombing and the the way they (the white people' children consumed drugs, Rock-n-roll.) Watching them OD and have disrespect for their parents showed me that I'll just get the Graff part out of these cats. I touched and wrote with my first flooded Black ink Pilot Marker in 1981 through one of these Forest Hills students. I have always been writing RAB. I have never written or pieced under any pseudonym! Where and what year did you start writing on trains? I started writing on trains in September 1981. I lived in South Jamaica, Queens (South Side) at the time. The closest train station to me was Sutphin Blvd. (Hillside Ave.) on the E and F line. After being introduced to bombing in the summer of '81; I naturally wanted to hit trains. I gravitated toward my home line. The express track lay-ups at 75th Avenue were a logical choice! Introduced to me by my junior high school partners in Forest Hills. They were White. This was a strange union for me back then. But even stranger, was that we did not venture into the tunnel between 75th Avenue and Union Turnpike. We only hit cars of the train sticking out into the station. They warned me that the tunnels were hot that particular week! Did you have a particular inspiration or mentor(s)? I was introduced to the smell of Design Markers; Black books and a definitive writing style by E-Z LG. More aspects of Graff were supplemented by KZ-5 (SERP). Two writers from my junior high school (DICE 5 and MZ-One) introduced me to the terms such as "flooded"; "lay-ups"; "bombing" and "tag". I would list CEY CITY (Notch, Adam) as a particular mentor. I befriended him in the fall of '81 the now-famous GPI Graffiti Gallery run by Joyce Toybin. It was on Hudson St (off 14th Street) in Lower Manhattan's meat packing district. We clicked because he was from Jamaica, Queens. He had a history of doing pieces on lines in Queens and in other boroughs. I used to ride my bike to his house on the weekends. He taught me how to sketch pieces in black books. He also showed me a style of simple, but animated pieces using bands of colors as opposed to blending with thick outlines and 3-D on the letters. Plus I

visited the GPI gallery often. I got a whole scope of piecing styles. He was the first to put me down with other historical crews such as OTB, TPA and CITY. What lines have you hit? I'm not gonna list the alphabet soup and numbers of New York City transit lines. That would not be detailed. I'll define the lines by defining moments. I began with the E and F (R-46 or Ding dongs) from the Jamaica end in late '81. By early '82, I was hitting the GG (R-10) and the N below the 71st-Continental-Union Turnpike stations. Those R-10s had a strange sound. I think it was the compressors building up pressure. The summer of '82 introduced me to the A and CC from the Brooklyn and Queens end. This was partly due to my High School mate at Brooklyn Tech, DESIRE (DS). His home stop was at Lefferts Blvd in Queens. The other last stop on the longest line in NYC. DESIRE and his crew (later to become mine) from Richmond Hills, Queens introduced me to the famous Oxford; Greenwood and Grant lay-ups of Brooklyn and Queens. Those were days of fierce competition in our neighborhood. Everybody was trying to "king" the insides of the A line. It was crazy, but it was all love! After alternating between the A, CC, E, F, GG, N; I wanted a challenge! I wanted to venture to other lines! I started to skip cars on the previous lines during my bombing missions. I was mostly doing insides. My throw-ups went through many phases before It settled on the one that is still recognizable from late '82. A writer who used to live in Bay Ridge Brooklyn hipped us to the M & RR lay-ups down there! DOLE (DO/DOLER) was the only writer from around my way to take up the challenge to bomb another line. From that summer, DOLE and I become partners in crime. We killed insides on the BMT flats; top-to-bottom ridgies and bulldogs. We quickly realized that summer that the MTA regularly changed these cars and ran them on different lines. We had discovered the route to All-City! By fault of the MTA; we had throw-ups and tags riding on all BMTs (B, D, J, LL, M, N, Q, RR, and S). We rocked that summer with our enhanced Pilots; Magnums and Ban roll on bottles. The ink and paint flowed that summer! The last lines were the numbers. I did not live near any number line, nor did I take any number line to school (Brooklyn Tech). But it was those Tech writers who introduced me to the lay-ups of Brooklyn. Yeahhh! Easy access! Kingston; Nostrand Aves; Nevins and the multi-track lays of Utica Ave. So I send my shout outs to cats from Tech like SPIN, TATU, SOE, EARL, SORO, DEAN, ATOMIC (Refuge) and others who I cut class with to bomb the 4 line during the afternoon lay-ups. I caught the bug now! 1983 was an intense year of bombing! I did not get to the 1 and 3 and the 6 and 7 lines until 1984. Yoooo! White trains on the 7 line! My girl lived in Corona. So it was always inviting to hit the elevated lay-ups between 103rd and 111th Streets. Eventually I got up considerably on every line on the NYC transit system. Even the MTA buses of southeast Queens! I have done work in EVERY lay-up in the NYC transit system. I've done work in about 80 percent of the yards in existence in the '80s. I was more of a Lay-up writer though!

These were no being manufactured. I averaged about 200 can per week. Many were stashed outside around layups in Brooklyn or Queens. Mostly in abandoned bldgs. I was 15 year old living with both parents. I couldn't keep all of that in the house! Favorite Spray Paint? Belton Molotow I began the ink experience with those little 30ml bottles that came with the eye dropper. word! The black was indelible; but the red and Green ink faded after some time being exposed to the elements. I hated drips; but I did modify marker tips by 'pinning' and created concoctions of ink based upon alcohol and Super Market purple ink. This led to homemade markers. You should've seen the first ones. What a mess! I was handed down a Uni from an old time writer and racked a mini from a small Mom and Pop art store in Flushing Queens. Later was able to rack and admittedly buy the little Flo-Master cans for refill. I first saw this from original CAC writers in Queens. I was floored by the opaques. Somewhere in the Mid-eighties; Marsh Ink came along. I adopted that. It was weird to see my Flo-Master black ink tags from 1982 with that brown-fade tinge. So, a new ink was inevitable use to cop those quarts! Favorite ink now? Krink opaques What borough are you originally from? As I said before. I represented Southeast, Queens. I lived in Jamaica, but I roamed all over the city! Cats really never had a finger where I actually rested! Cats used to front on Queens; but the eighties were all about Queens when you look back in retrospect at Hip Hop. I did it all in Queens. Djaying; breakbeat-collecting; breakdancing; writing and all of that. But I went to one of the most exclusive high schools in NYC. Brooklyn Tech! So I knew all the Brooklyn movements as a teenager. I didn't get to Harlem until the mid-eighties when close members of CAC moved up to Sugar Hill and the Polo Grounds. I'll get to that later. Who was your most successful partner(s)? DOLE (DO/DOLER) was my most successful partner on the MTA lines. We did countless pieces together and ripped insides on sunny, quiet afternoons on elevated lay-ups such as Ocean Parkway, Sheepshead Bay and deep tunnel hide-outs such as 175 Street on the A line! He was disciplined! He never did anything foolish to attract attention to our so called artistic vandalism! We never had any differences! We respected each other's beliefs and kept the focus of the real meaning of graff in NYC Getting Up! We did blackbook pieces together and we laid out elaborate bombing schedules. continued ON NEXT PAGE...

What were your supplies? I started out with the toys. El Marko; Magnum & Martin Paint etc. But as the game was refined. in the mid-eighties for me; I sought out specific brands of spray paint such as Krylon (for color choice); Rustoleum for throw-Ups along with DupliColor car paint ( That shit was near impossible to buff in a single car washing; Red Devil because I heard that this is what the writers from the 70s liked. I tried to find the infamous Niagara starch caps for the Rustos-. by the time I started writing;

Tell us the history of CAC? The Crazy Ass Criminals was started in 1981 by KZ-5 and EZ-LG. They were next door neighbors who lived directly across the street from me in South Jamaica, Queens. Heavy recruiting by KZ-5 and I began as we visited Joyce Tobin's GPI gallery in the fall of '81. They did not put me down with the clique until they felt my writing style was "acceptable". That was the summer of '81. I was just glad to be down with a crew. I cannot tell you how many people were down before I got down. But I can tell ya this! No one from CAC was hitting the lines until I got down and started pushing it next to my name on the iron horses! LG never went to the other boroughs with KZ-5 and I. I remember him being highly vexed that I was putting other writers down with CAC. I didn't get full rights until KZ-5 became president. He was hip to the vastness of the graffiti networks existing at the time. Besides writers at our respective schools, many writers were recruited at the GPI graff gallery. (If only I had my blackbook from that year.) Writers from around our way were also recruited. SLAM, SENER and MAZE II lived around the corner from us. We all united and bombed the E & F tunnels from 75th Avenue to 179th Street Those tags would be priceless! The second phase of CAC began with the alliance of The Richmond Hills/South Ozone Park writers. These writers such as DESIRE (DS), DOLE (DO), JEL, IN 2, RAM AAA, DEL, SIPHOR and others. We spread CAC through the longest snake on the line, the A train! Cats in Washington Heights, Brooklyn and Manhattan glanced and saw CAC vigorously being attached to names. Not to mention; some of the writers recruited by me at GPI began to push CAC. I later became a regular at Henry Chalfant's photo/sculpture studio on Wooster Street (off Canal in Lower Manhattan) Writers were asked to push CAC if I recognized them. Henry was sincere to the art. I applaud him for his tireless efforts to document a now forgotten aspect of Hip Hop! We had writers that lived in the Bronx, Manhattan and even Staten Island. We were not confined to Southeast Queens. I believed in the organization. It was strictly a writing clique. I wanted more so I joined organizations such as Zulu Nation; formed a breakdancing crew with my brother and cousin and djayed and rapped with early CAC members in Southeast, Queens. I was a djay with crates of records before I started bombing! Even through my writing in the mid-eighties, I still found time to set up my equipment in the public school parks with the very same members who where hitting the lines with me. The meaning of CAC moved from Crazy Ass Criminals to Cool Art Creators. I'm not sure if it was me or the other core members, but that phrase was comfortable! This happened in 1983. KZ-5 retired his marker. I chose SLAM as a vice president. He was knowledgeable about the MTA operations. We believed in reconnaissance. It was SLAM who hipped us to the transit authority terms. We now knew what a R-30 or R-40 was. We knew lay-up times and pull-out times. We had keys! We had a history of the lines largely due to SLAM. The Œhits¹ continued. Some took the mission more seriously than others, some changes had to be made. SLAM and I had our differences. The core members had a vote and we agreed that DOLE should become vice-prez. Conflicts? Yes! But it was necessary at the time. The organization needed the right leadership! I chose all the recruiters. I used to keep a list of who was put down with CAC from me, the VP and the five other recruiters. I still have that list in Accra. The numbers were well over a thousand. I stopped counting in 1987!

44

SLAM moved to Edgecombe Avenue, and DOLE moved to the Polo Grounds after him. This began the Harlem connection of CAC. It was 1984. Members who are core team players now were HP 173; SUEEIE (Psuey); DENER (DEN), Merk and RAZE were recruited. They did their own thing independent of me. They hit the 155-Yankee stadium; double track lays. The 3 yard at 148th and Lenox and 175 Street on the A. 175th Street became a particular homebase for us. I'm not going to front! Many people considered 175th their homebase. RTWOW and the Dominican FK were running in and out of there also! AA/K and B trains there. I rarely saw an actual A ding dong in there back in those days! That meant the crew always had to come back to Brooklyn and Queens (Pitkin yard and the lay-ups) to keep a presence on the half ridgies and the ding dongs. The slants always switched to the A line. The bulldogs went to various BMT lines. The Harlem CAC crew created considerable beef with the FK at 175th. We beat down many cats up there. A lot of gun play and all that. RTWOW was in and out of there also. This may be why RICH 2, QUIK, SACH, JULY and NE began to go over much of my shit! But then again; they was going over everybody! I have met them on various occasions. Never escalated into serious confrontations though! I later joined the Airforce. 1986 was my last year of heavy bombing. DOLE and the Harlem crew took over from there. Occasionally I would bomb with them when I returned to NYC on leave. Eventually, Koch got his last dying wish before leaving the mayoral office. The "Buff" beat us! It beat us and a thousand of other writers badly! By 1989, CAC was dead on the lines! 1990 ushered my return to NYC. I took my art to the handball courts and street bombing! Other CAC members took it to the freight trains! Some took it to the streets like VEC 4, PICK, Chino and VEEFER. Cool Art Creators became my publishing company. You see; I began to make beats in the late eighties. I took the graff to the music business! By the mid-nineties; I was into music production. Since I had the graff skills; I later formed a CAC graphics design group in Accra, Ghana. Armed with our Apple Macs and PhotoShop; we just got digital! So ya see; CAC still lives on. Making money though! There are a lot of details in between all my statements above. But ya know, people get the idea! Who are all the official members past and present? No one is really writing these days from the core crew but you got cats like PRIZ, REM 311, Merk and others who still have the bug to hit freights and wall. There are others but I will not turn this into a shoutout page! The official members have been mentioned above. Officially though, are the names of cats who made my CAC list. This was info from me, the vice presidents and the five recruiters in the peak bombing stage of us. 1982-1986. Grant Avenue in Brooklyn was a good place because the CC flats were always parked against the wall. Good for whole cars! 175th Street in Manhattan was nice due to the number of trains packed in there! They even kept a ladder in the back! Plus they had a catwalk also! I personally liked the atmosphere of the Jamaica yards and the quiet Sunday afternoons at Ocean Parkway/Sheepshead Bay/Neck Road! I hated the smell of paint but I liked the smell of the subway tunnels. I did all aspects of Graff. art in Black books; wildstyles; book collabs; tags in the neighborhood; street bombing campaigns; Delivery Truck bombing; Insides of MTA

and the private Queens lines buses; All letter lines; all Number lines ..insides and out with throw-ups; burners; window downs; whole cars; Top-To-bottoms. Yep. Did it all! ventured to other neighborhoods to bomb and hang out; handball courts; Public school walls; Ventured to other states to rack paint. Had canvas exhibitions. Sold canvases; did denim jackets'. Bombed subway tunnels; stations; The LOng Island Railrodad!; Highways in queens; Pieces in other states; pieces in other countries. Wait I take that back. I never, ever did grate or scratch my name into the subway car window or etch with a surfaceeating acid. Nope! Never made it to that level. A story that sticks in my head? When an East New York Brooklyn writer called PI got beat down inside the Tunnels between Shepherd Ave and Van Siclen Ave on the A & C line. We (CAC members) had to pick him off the the unused express track before the Next JFK Express (Remember that?) came running over him. We carried him to the next station and propped him against the wall. We watch him collapse to platform as we descended back into the tunnel. It must be understood that we had nothing to do with this beat down by 15 members of some East NY writers led by ESTEME. We had to announce who we were; or we would have caught it too. Do you have any closing words? I would like to work with a team; let's say... an archaeological team. We would enter the tunnels of New York City to document the tags on the concrete walls. These places are the last bastions of the origins and the golden bombing days of the New York City transit system. It would be highly important to photograph some of these tags. Then publish them with a year a location and possible story around that mystery person or event! As you know, all the history has been eradicated from the station stairwells and walls and the trains. Does anyone remember the concrete strips at the bottom of the station walls? When I started writing on the lines in '81; I was able to get full knowledge of who my predecessors were, just by examining the style of the tags and remembering the names! It was always exciting to know that I was following in the same paths as some of the greater writers from the '70s and even my contemporaries. Somebody needs to document what's left on those walls in those lay-ups. One could even go to the yards to check some walls or maintenance sheds there for these precious tags from an era of Hip Hop that is always forgotten. Lastly; we need a strong film (indie or hollywood) that follows the life of an actual graff writer. I'm talking about some highly detailed story exposing all of our secrets. This would reveal to the world that 'writing' was way more sophisticated than random vandalization. It could be anybody, because there are so many, may stories to tell! . I currently run a blog called www.Rabsworld.com. It’s a magazine blog about Africa, Djaying, Food, Graffiti, Music, Politics & Culture, Sci-Fi and Tech. I plan to re-design the graphic portion of the site and expand on the Graffiti part of tin this early part of 2009. I also plan to execute some more aerosol art this Spring.

When did you start to write graffiti? I started in 1976, in JHS, with my homeboy DOC TC-5. But I didn't finally hit the trains till about '78 and that was once in a while. I started hitting hard about 1989 and basically never stopped!! Any influences? Growing up in Brooklyn it feels to me like Graff was always there. I can remember walking and seeing these tags around my way: JEE2, TOTOP, SLEE, DYNOMITE149, FORK, OONE, SOFINE & MEUP, just to name a few. As time went by and I started to bomb more, it was more of a crew thing rather than single writers. You had crews like BUS Crew, Glenmore Crew, 7DS, LOC BAD Inc, TVS, TPA, CIA & TOP to name a few. Me? I was what you called a wanderer!! I used to hang in QUEENS, BROOKLYN, MANHATTAN & DA BRONX. I was all over the place & used to hang with all these different crews. Some even at war with each other So when asked to be down with a crew, I would say yes, but only throw it up when I was with that crew. I thought it was best that way!! Who do you think are some underrated writers? I can go on with writers inside then go outside. But here is my opinion of who are underrated. Just to name a few. 2IL SIC, bombed with a lot if different names and got up with everyone.

52

SRONE TNV, that kid got up like crazt and was doing whole cars, throw ups & insides. BABY 168, I know veryone knows of him but in my opinion he deserves more props than given. CHRIS 217, I think this dude had mad ups!! KM, another true graff killer! MITCH 77, I think he deserves more props!! I dont want to keep going on because we will be here all day! Fuck that!! This is supposed to be about me!!! What lines did you hit & with who? My main line was the “A”. But Ive hit most of the other lines at least once or twice in my carrer. The only I know I never hit was the “7” line. Why? I dont know, never had a feel for that line. Some of the dudes Ive bombed with are: PLUS, JS, REPS, CHIP, APS, JOE61, AERO, MEEK, COLSTER, IDEA, SLEE, K64, DURO, DONDI, SAINTOP, YD43, PG3, EL3, SNIPER, FEAR, KEN007, HEL, CRIME79, BABY168, PEO, SCAN, OUONE, RONONE, PACO, SECOND, RKONE, BEAT, NOE, BOLT, RID, 2IL, LOU, BAD BID, MR R, CIST, TRUE, DOLE, RAM, RAB, DAC, OZ, CP, MURDERONE, YOU2, DE, REBELTUNE, FLIN, GWIZ, OC, LIST, NEU06, PYTHON, SONIC002, BO, SRONE, LIL STAR, DUST 7DS, TRIX, JONONE, RINE, FAZE, HOOPER, TCEE, BOOM2, RISTONE, CB, DOC, ZEST, SIZE, POET, EEKAY, OOK, STEEP, ROMO, DUSE, TEKAY, ROJO, DIST, KEN007 & JAZ. Lately Ive been chilling out with my peoples TBS & TVS, SNATCH, LOU, CEDS, POET,

REBEL & NERO FOR TBC AND BABY168, PEO, TABU AND VAS FOR TVS. We got plans for the spring so be on the lookout for those new productions & shows!! TBC Crew, break it down!! The Brew Crew, Treacherous Bombing Committee, The Baddest Combination, To Be Chilling, The Bambu Crew. TBC was passed down to me! The original prez was DEK2. I met DEK in the early '80s. He had mad styles galore and mad characters. Hes the reason why I try to have characters on all my stuff. The original TBC Crew was DEK2, 2SWIFT, APS, CHIPSTER, PLUS, JS & me. It was cool when we bombed together. Although I was down with a lot of crews already, TBC felt like family!! I represented it even after everyone was gone!! True TBC King!!! The difference between then & now? I loved hitting the trains, layups, yards. I respect guys who are hitting the streets now. But I find it isnt for me. When you were in the yards & layups, it was like being in your own little world. Nothing mattered but you, the trains and getting up. With the streets, you have to worry about too much around you. Now I only do legals. More power to you brothers but I think I did what I had to do, paid my dues!!!

Favorite type of paint/markers? Krylon, Rustos, a uni, a mini, mop tops, flowmasters & supermarket inks. All you needed to do a decent hit on the trains. Ironically Im sitting here in front of the New york City Transit Authority building in Brooklyn writing this interview. If they only knew!! I can only say that my experience in the graff world was one that I wouldnt change for anything. From the raids to hitting up dudes for paint. It was fun and exciting at the same time. I was never caught for hitting trains. I know a few who did. Things arent what they used to be. People atre snitching like crazy now, so only legals for me now. I dont think I have to go through all that anymore, too old, too tired!! Plus Id feel kinda stupid getting cuaght now after all this time. More power to you brothers still doing it up!! I also feel that a lot of people are getting mad props in graff who never touched a train. Ok, you write graff but dont hate because a brother did his. I dont care if a dude never touches another can again in his life! Dudes that hit the trains keep their props. In closing I just want to say that although graff isnt what it used to be, we as artists have to rememeber that we live by a code!! Once its broken, there is no trust!! To my peeps, you know who you are, Peace Love & Respect

ve been doin graffitti for 23 years and I got my start in Allentown, PA. I was really interested in the West Coast style earlier on in my graff career so I went to check out the Los Angeles scene. The spray can actually came first. Its kind of a weird story how I started tattooing. I used to kill this wall that was close to my house when I was younger and could still walk [LOL]!! After my accident I continued to bomb the spot. My Graff partner and another homeboy decided to open a hip hop store and included me as a partner. People realized I was the guy doing the paintings and since I had a couple of tats at the time I guess they thought I could tattoo and bugged me to do work on them. So I gave it a try [luckily I had cool friends that would kinda teach me over the phone] and the rest is history!!! The number 1 reason I got back into Graff was SIE calling me up and saying 5 points is dope, come up and paint. I really had not painted for about 10 years or so but once I went to 5 points it was a wrap!! That place is insanely inspirational!! The art work is incredible and just the vibe in that area is real cool and laid back. My favorite paint is Montana Black and my favorite color is Atlantis Green. Writers that catch my attention? Hmmmmmm... Needless to say the TD4 dudes are off the hook!!! Theres a skate park called PENN SKATE near my shop and they came up and rocked it with me! MERES ZIMAD ZYMER OWNS SEBS HOAKS! I have my eye on a couple other writers also!! KATCH [who Ive had the pleasure to paint with] MEARS from LA, SEVER, REVOK and The EAZ ONE. You asked about VANILLA ICE so I texted him and got this info right from his mouth bro!! He says, “Shit Im touring, just released a Hip Hop Classic CD and doing a reality tv show for VH1, ‘Back to High School’.” He goes on to say, “I did ‘ICE ICE BABY’ at 16 never finished high school!!” He also just raised $28,000 for TOYS FOR TOTS and 10,000 people attended! Brief history of HELLBOUND. Custom art, custom art, custom art, nuff said!! Id like to say thanx to MERES for having me up every week and CHRIS from PENNSKATE for letting me kill the inside of the park!! Ill be doing some solo productions this year as well!! Chris is getting a forklift and scaffolding to get my cripple ass up in the air! Go big or go home!!! Peace... End of Story, Sey1...

RIP DEPT HR

This is in Loving Memory of our brother DEPT1 who passed away a few months ago. I had lost touch with him since he moved to Tennessee, and was recently contacted with his widow and given the terrible news that Dept1 had passed. I knew him since High School. We did lots of bombing together and managed to bust off a few pieces as well. I'm always reminded of Dept by his laugh. The more he laughed the more he made you laugh. Then there was the funniest incident with him and my brother Fat Joe at my job. I'll tell that story some other time. Rest in Peace my brother, I know your bombing it up in heaven and laughing with the gods!! God Bless your kids and your family down here. One, Louie167 HARD ROCS
