CLOSING REMARKS -2-
The Maryland General Assembly is a bicameral body that consists of both the upper chamber and the lower chamber. The upper chamber, The Maryland State Senate, holds 47 members. Each Senate district represents about 122,813 residents. The lower chamber, The Maryland House of Delegates, has 141 members and each delegate represents about 40,938 residents. Both houses serve four-year terms and elect their own officers, such as Speaker of the House and President of the Senate. The General Assembly meets each year for 90 days to act on more than 2,300 bills including the state’s annual budget, which it must pass prior to adjournment sine die. The General Assembly’s 439th session convened on January 8, 2020, and will adjourn on April 6, 2020. As the General Assembly begins the session, the Democratic Party holds a majority in both The House of Delegates and The Senate. The 2018 election brought in 60 new legislators; 43 in The House and 17 in The Senate.
