regional destination

Great Southern on the move by Peter Forrestal

It’s the improvement in the quality of the wines that suggests that things have changed in the Great Southern over the past five years. Riesling has moved up a notch and the region’s best rank alongside Australia’s finest. Kerrigan & Berry, Gilberts, Three Drops, Castle Rock have been sensational: zingy, pure, fresh and irrestible. Larry Cherubino has dazzled with an everchanging range of single site and sub-regional riesling at a range of price points: impeccably balanced natural acidity is a feature. Howard Park have softened the acidity of its riesling, making the wines approachable when young while still offering the promise of a cellaring future. A classy Porongups riesling has been added to their portfolio. Xabregas have benefitted from Martin Cooper’s experience of German riesling and have made several thrilling wines enhanced by judicious use of residual sugar. His focus on the importance of site has helped lift the Xabregas profile. Frankland Estate shows the benefit of a decade wooing the finest sommeliers in the country as their rieslings are proudly featured on the wine lists of all the country’s finest restaurants. ‘Isolation Ridge’ is quite different in style, being less fruity and more minerally, than most Australian rieslings: it’s a classy, ageworthy white. Their ‘Smith Cullam’ so effectively balances its sweetness with crisp natural acidity it makes it a surprisingly good match with oysters. There was a time when I thought that cabernet sauvignon was overshadowed by shiraz in the Great Southern. And

this, in spite of the fact that the Houghton ‘Jack Mann’ Cabernet is worthy of iconic status and, in years like 2001, 2004 and 2007, is the equal of any WA red. Times have changed and the best cabernet is superb. Like the ‘Jack Mann’, the CW Ferguson Cabernet Malbec is sourced from Justin’s Vineyard in Frankland River and deserves to be rated among the top dozen reds from the West. Down the road at Ferngrove, their ‘Majestic’ Cabernet, in years like 2005 and 2008, is among the finest examples of the variety in the West and among our most reasonably priced. Mt Barker’s Plantagent is back on form with its cabernet from 2007 on showing the benefit of Chief Winemaker, John Durham’s long experience at Cape Mentelle. Clemence Haselgrove has helped transform the wines of the region’s oldest vineyard, Forest Hill, and her cabernets from 2007 onwards are complex and powerful yet with finesse and elegance. Shiraz is impressive from Frankland River. Houghton’s ‘Wisdom’ from Justin’s Vineyard, Cherubino and Howard Park ‘Scotsdale’ are the best of the bunch. In Mt Barker, no one does it better than Plantagenet although Xabregas have thrown down the gauntlet since Martin Cooper’s arrival. Bunn, a tiny family winery that is biodynamic, has sealed their 2009 vintage under screwcap and shows considerable promise.

Many critics had not considered Western Australia cool enough for pinot noir. That was before Burgundian winemaker, Pascal Marchand, joined forces with Howard Park’s Jeff Burch. Single vineyard, ‘Gibraltar Rock’ (from the Porongurup) and ‘Mt Barrow’ from Mt Barker under the Marchand & Burch label have clear varietal charcter, ethereal fragrance and silky texture. Nearby Castle Rock consistently produces pinot that is denser, yet with good varietal characters and seductive texture. Denmark’s Lake House and Matilda’s have gold medal winning pinot to suggest that the best is yet to come. Behind the scenes, change is afoot. The new generation of Sandy and Rod Hallett is revitalising Alkoomi with bright young winemaker, Andrew Cherry; viticultural reforms have transformed the reds at Frankland Estate; Viticulturist, Lee Haselgrove, and his team have removed 35 hectares of poorly performing vineyard at Forest Hill paving the way for higher quality fruit in future vintages. For similar reasons, West Cape Howe have ripped up 30 hectares of their Mt Barkers vineyards. There’s a new spirit in Denmark with Willoughby Park, contract crusher Mt Shadforth, Castelli, Lake House, Matilda’s and Estate 807 all showing forwardthinking approach and enough head-turning wines to add substance to these words.

winemaker profile

Edward’s Wines & a Tigers Tale by Peter Forrestal

Brian Edwards passed away in 2003, but his memory and the dream he achieved, both on land and in the air, lives on through Edwards Wines and the Tiger Moth “Matilda” which sits in pride of place in her own hanger adjacent to the Edwards cellar door.

8

Liquor Barons Birthday Catalogue

Visiting the cellar door of this small winery in Margaret River gives you an added perspective on the family story. Situated just off Caves Road to the south of Wilyabrup, it is a purpose-built modern facility with plenty of natural light for wine tasting and for looking over the picturesque landscape with its row after row of vines undulating into the distance. It’s unpretentious yet classy and the focus, inside, as well as outside is on the wines. There’s just one exception, the mural depicting the Matilda legend, the path that Brian Edwards and his 1943 Tiger Moth biplane took on the Kangaroo Route from England to Australia on its epic 1990 journey. Outside, there’s just one distraction, Matilda sits proudly in its hanger so that anyone who wants to can marvel at how plane and passenger survived the discomfort and the adventures of that journey. This is all the more poignant as Brian Edwards, who with his wife Jenny established the family business in 1991, succumbed to leukaemia in 2003. In the early years, while the vineyard was getting established the fruit was sold off to other wineries and the family label gradually introduced. At the same time, Brian Edwards’s sons Michael (winemaker) and Christo (viticulturist) were off gaining experience at Devil’s Lair and Voyager Estate respectively and moonlighting on the family property in its early days. It’s been just about the perfect scenario for a small (12,000 case, 25 hectare) family winery. From the start, the Edwards Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends have been the outstanding wines produced from the property and these have regularly won trophies and gold medals at the local shows. They have bright ripe tropical aromatics, intense and pure gooseberry, white peach and nectarine flavours, a vibrant tangy quality and crunchy natural acidity. As you’d expect, the Edwards Sauvignon Blanc is always very good showing more green pea, green bean flavours with zesty acidity. It took some time for the Edwards Chardonnay to match the extraordinarily high standards set by the variety in the Margaret River region but in recent years it’s been impressive and very much in the modern style: fresh, clean and vibrant with good viscosity, savoury minerally flavours, and a long ultra-dry, shaley finish that lingers.

The family were at their most playful creating a second label, Tiger’s Tale, (how many puns can you cram into one name): straight-forward, flavoursome wines at a fair price. Both the Edwards Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon have shown greater finesse, clearer fruit flavours and better balance over the past decade as the vineyard has matured. Edwards is an exemplary family winery producing outstanding whites and rapidly improving reds from their Margaret River estate at fair prices. They also have a great story to tell.

The spring racing carnival is in full swing, the days are getting warmer and summer is just around the corner, so what better than a glass of bubbles to help you celebrate with family and friends? The quality of Australian and New Zealand sparkling wines have improved greatly; there are now so many great bottles to choose from. So whether you decide you want to enjoy ‘Champagne’ or ‘sparkling wine’ you can be confident the drink you choose will get the party started like every glass of bubbly should. Australia’s most well known sparkling winemaker, Ed Carr, has recently been announced as the Gourmet Traveller Magazine Australian Winemaker of the Year, recognising the amazing work he has done with brands such as Yarra Burn. Carr believes Australia will eventually produce sparkling wines equal to the world’s best and says ageing is one of the keys to producing world-class fizz. “There are many elements to producing a top-quality sparkling wine but age has been the missing link in Australia,” he says. Brands such as Yellowglen and Deutz are also on special this month, and offer great value. Winston Churchill famously said, “It is not just France we fight for, it is Champagne”, and he knew a thing or two about the drink. If you’re looking to impress, the world’s favourite Champagne, Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial, is on special this month at Liquor Barons,

along with Piper Heidsieck and Mumm Cordon Rouge – all quality Champagnes. Traditionally made from the blend of three grapes, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, you will find some sparkling wines made from Chardonnay only (called a Blanc de Blanc) or just from the red grapes – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (called a Blanc de Noir). More recently grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are being used to produce specific styles. It’s worth exploring to find the style that best suits you. Traditionally made sparkling wine undergoes two stages of fermentation, first in casks and then after the wine has been bottled with a topping of sugar and yeast. Lovers of the style should doff their collective hats to Mr. Dom Perignon for discovering the effect of that second fermentation back in the late 17th century when adding a little extra sugar to his wines he was selling to the English – and then traveling on bumpy French roads. While many exploded some survived and started the style enjoyed by millions around the globe – Champagne.

Absinthe

originated in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. It achieved great popularity as an alcoholic drink in late 19th and early 20th century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers. Owing in part to its association with bohemian culture, consumption of absinthe was opposed by social conservatives and prohibitionists. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Aleister Crowley and Alfred Jarry were all known drinkers of absinthe. It is commonly referred to in historical literature as “la fée verte” (the “green fairy” in French).

Produced & bottled in the Czech Republic where they have been making absinth continually since the 1800s.
