Chairman’s message
When the cooler weather settles in, the presumption is that life slows down in general. Not so with Liquor Barons, we don’t seem to be slowing down at all, the opposite in fact! June welcomes on board three new stores south of the river; Liquor Barons Byford, Oakford and Forrestdale, all experienced operators, feel free to drop in on the guys and say hello. It’s not only new stores that are bringing a hive of activity to the group, you’ll also notice our re-branding continues for many of our familiar stores; Mt Hawthorn, Melville, Greenwood, Carlisle and soon to follow Mt Lawley and the South Perth Mends St store. We are also working hard to repeat the phenomenal success of the annual ‘Liquor Barons Fine Wine Expo’ for 2012. Again we’ll be holding the event at The Hyatt Regency and this year promises to be even more exciting with the inclusion of a dedicated ‘Craft Beer and Cider Room’. All of your well known favourite Australian wineries will be there along with new, boutique, producers so that you’ll get a first-hand taste of what’s happening in the local wine industry. We’ve also doubled the number of ‘Master Class’ sessions due to their popularity from last year, so make sure you sign up for one on the night. Yes indeed, it’s going to be a busy couple of months for Liquor Barons but we wouldn’t want it any other way, Cheers! Lou Spagnolo

Cosmic wine tasting rod properjohn You’ve probably had the experience of tasting a wine at a winery; enjoying it, buying a few bottles and taking them home where a second tasting on another day leaves you disappointed. Our panel had a tasting in February which was amazing, there were 35 beautifully made wellpriced wines that crossed our table without a dud and hardly an unbalanced wine among them and yet seven weeks later in April, we reviewed another 35 wines and struggled to find one we enjoyed. This led to a discussion on biodynamics and the tasting of wine. Biodynamic grape growing and organic wine production are now very fashionable and there are some who say biodynamics play a part in tasting as well. We reckon any day is a great day for tasting wine, 4
Liquor Barons Winter Catalogue
but there are the believers who say some days are better than others. They consult a biodynamic calendar that highlights the good days and those to avoid. The calendar divides the year into four kinds of days: fruit days are the best and wines will not disappoint on these days, flower days are neutral but not detrimental, leaf days are not favourable and root days are to be shunned, except for those involved in pinot noir who like a little dirt or earthiness in their wines. No, I’ve yet to confront the calendar to see what days our two contentious tastings were on. The believers say the phases of the moon are powerful enough to move the ocean, so why not affect a wine and the way it tastes. Experienced wine judge and organic winemaker Vanya Cullen of Cullen Wines
in Margaret River utilises the phases of the moon in winemaking whenever she can, from initially picking the grapes through to racking and blending. And she does say her wines, once bottled, are affected by the moon. “I notice it especially when I’m on a promotional tour and tasting my wines over a lengthy period, on some occasions they excel and on other days they are not so good”, she says. There are international wine buyers who agree with Vanya and plan their tastings according to the calendar, but the Liquor Barons panel has yet to go that far, it can be a struggle to find a suitable day for us to get together for a tasting without the further constraint of a biodynamic calendar. We’ll soldier on without one.

In 1862 Thomas Cooper started a small brewing venture in the fledgling colony of South Australia through the strangest circumstances. His ailing wife required a tonic, and Thomas, following a family recipe, produced a restorative brew. His efforts were soon recognised by the local colonials and his Sparkling Ale and Best Extra Stout brews grew rapidly in popularity, leading to the development of a brewery at Leabrook in 1881. Upon his death, Thomas left the running of the brewery to his four sons who had embraced the family trade. A sound scientific approach to brewing was developed and the company’s reputation as a brewer of distinction grew. Through the Great Depression and two World Wars, the second and third generations of Coopers continued the tradition of brewing fine ales and stout. Successive members of the family have applied either an aptitude for science to brewing, or alternatively devoted themselves to the commercial side of the business while never losing sight of Thomas Cooper’s vision of providing value and quality in the form of a healthy beer for an appreciative public.

Fourth generation Coopers oversaw the introduction of lager beer into the range of products. Maxwell Cooper, as brewer, improved the process of natural conditioning to provide consistent ales and stout with refined fruity and floral character. Bill Cooper injected a strong marketing effort into promoting Coopers nationally and internationally. By 1990 Bill and Maxwell were joined in the business by fifth generation Coopers Glenn, Tim and Melanie. Glenn Cooper, Executive Chairman and Marketing Director, continued the strong marketing effort, while Tim Cooper, Managing Director, as brewer, worked on improving the brewing process and equipment. By 1997 it was apparent that the brewing operations at the Leabrook site could no longer sustain further growth. Following the purchase of the Regency Park site, Tim Cooper commenced a three-year programme of designing the new brewery and supervising the relocation of operations from Leabrook. Today, Coopers Brewery is Australia’s sole remaining family-owned brewery of stature. Although much has changed since the days of brewing in wooden barrels, Coopers remains synonymous with exceptional quality beers. Liquor Barons Winter Catalogue 9

A Ramble
MEMBERS
around the Globe
A Ramble Round the Globe was published in 1894 and penned by Thomas Dewar on his travels whilst publicizing Dewar’s Scotch Whisky.
Dewar’s: The Spirit Irresistible The call of the sea may not be denied, and so with the charm of Dewar’s Whisky. As invigorating as the winds that blow from out of space. Dewar’s, like a well-found ship, brings content; boundless and satisfying

Being somewhat an advertising maverick, Thomas “Tommy” Dewar was always thinking of new ways to bring Dewar’s scotch whisky into the public eye. The son of Dewar’s creator John Alexander Dewar was probably the first producer of a cinema advert and a documentary filmed at Aberfeldy distillery, promoting the family’s blended scotch whisky. A period in his life when he was battling a persistent cold, his doctor suggested a spell in warmer climates. Ever the sales man, Tommy set sail from Scotland to Boston, then traversed America, advertising in New York, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco. Embarking the America’s he then found himself in Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, China and Hong Kong. Tommy documented his travels and peppered it with praise and criticism regarding his surroundings. His journal was published as “A Ramble Round the Globe”. More importantly Tommy had succeeded in introducing Dewar’s Scotch Whisky to both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific. Knighted, Sir Thomas Dewar had played a large role introducing Scotch Whisky out side of his native home of Scotland and the Dewar’s brand to homes around the world.
