Marlborough

T

he Marlborough wine region of New Zealand is where it all began for one of the world’s most loved white wines – New Zealand sauvignon blanc – synonymous with spring and summer. With the first vines planted in Marlborough in only 1973, this region is, by world-standards, very young. The incredible success that its sauvignon blanc has enjoyed around the globe in the last 30 years is staggering. Why is it so distinct? Marlborough provides ideal growing conditions for this varietal, with plenty of sunshine, cool nights and a long growing season ensuring the 4

vibrant fruit flavours for which Marlborough sauvignon blanc is renowned. These zesty fruit flavours, along with distinct pungent characters on the nose, give New Zealand ‘savvy’ an identity all of its own. Cabernet merlot C

abernet sauvignon and merlot together make up one of the most harmonious and classical wine blends in winemaking. Just as semillon and sauvignon blanc pair perfectly in white wine, or chardonnay and pinot noir in sparkling wine, cabernet and merlot favourably complement each other to create a distinct and delicious red wine style. While each is a noble grape variety in their own right, with their origins in Bordeaux France, and as two of the most widely planted red grape varietals here in Australia, the two varietals stand alone with their own, much-loved

characteristics. Yet when combined, it’s said the two grape varietals bring a new dimension to one another. Cabernet merlot tends to be deep black in colour and exhibits aromas and flavours of chocolate, plum and violets. Oak influence can also add soft spice, cedar or vanilla characters. The cabernet brings to the party its dark, brooding and lateripening blackcurrant and bramble fruit flavours while the merlot contributes more vibrant, early-ripening plum fruit flavours and a velvet-like texture. The merlot also has a softening effect on the tannins found in cabernet, which can

be quite upfront. For this reason, cabernet merlot is also a very food-friendly wine as tannins are less likely to dominate or overpower the meal. Ideal for this time of year, try it with lamb, pizza or with a barbecue. As with most things in life, it’s all about getting the proportions right. The ideal cabernet merlot blend ratio is touted to be approximately 70 per cent cabernet to 30 per cent merlot. The best cabernet merlot in Australia is created in cool-climate wine regions, and some of the best examples in the country are crafted here in Western Australia.


Cabernet merlot is an ideal spring-drinking red wineslightly softer than more full-bodied reds but with no shortage of fruit flavour, structure and character. Try with lamb at your next BBQ.

Voyager Estate By Peter Forrestal

A

fter 20 years, Voyager Estate is clearly established as one of Margaret River’s best-known wineries and few who visit the region would do so without calling at its sumptuous cellar door and restaurant and enjoying its magnificent rose gardens and picture-perfect winery grounds. In his vision for Voyager Estate, the impact of this experience on the visitor was so important to owner Michael Wright that he delayed the opening of the cellar door until he was satisfied that the landscaping of the lawns and gardens was precisely as he wanted it. This attention to detail and the dramatic concept for the estate has seen Voyager recognised as ‘Best Wine Tourism Experience’ at the 2010 Gourmet Traveller Travel Awards.

When Michael Wright bought the 20 hectare Freycinet vineyard from viticulturist, Peter Gheradi, in 1991 many wondered why a tee-totaller, one of Western Australia’s wealthiest men, would be keen to be involved in the wine industry. The pages of history provide some clues. The Wright family were tenant farmers in England for 200 years before Frederick Thomas Wright migrated to Maldon in Victoria in 1863 to continue that tradition. His son, Frederick Thomas, moved to Kalgoorlie during the gold rush of the 1890s, established a successful agricultural supplies business and had five children. One of these, Ernest Archibald (known as Peter) developed financial know-how and negotiating skills working as an accountant for the Bank of New South Wales and was sought out by his classmate from Hale School, Lang Hancock, to help exploit the opportunities arising from his mining exploration of the Pilbara. The royalties from iron ore mining has been the basis of the Wright family fortune.

in Margaret River attracted him, especially because he saw the wine industry as offering an opportunity to pursue his love of farming in an ‘exciting, multilayered enterprise’. He was able to use his knowledge of soils and climate to find the right site. His children remember clandestine expeditions with empty jars and bottles diving under or clambering over fences to obtain soil and water samples. As the owner of Voyager Estate, Michael Wright sees himself as a farmer: and, says his daughter, Alex, sweetly ‘he dresses like one’.

The tug of the land was strong and most of the descendants of Frederick Thomas took to farming including Peter’s son, Michael. While loving life on the land and working as a wool and wheat farmer, Michael was frustrated by government restrictions which prevented farmers from becoming involved in marketing or value-adding. The success of viticulture

The drive and energy that Michael Wright has put into the first 20 years of Voyager’s life has seen the winery wellestablished. Its growth has been slow, steady and marketdriven. There are 115 hectares of contiguous land under vine, supplying 95 per cent of Voyager’s needs. It produces about 40,000 cases of wine and had its best sales last year, at a time that the wine industry is doing it tough.

The name Voyager came from one of the family’s farms on the Great Eastern Highway on the road to York, now owned by cousins. Now in her thirties, Michael’s daughter, Alex, is general manager of Voyager after working in the family business for eight years. She already has an impressive CV working for wine industry bodies and in the area of her great love, the arts. Alex was a member of the first cohort of the Wine Australia Future Leaders program and readily testifies to the importance of this initiative in her own development. While it may well have been the tourist experience that initially attracted visitors to Voyager Estate, today they are just as likely to come because of the quality of the wines. The whites, especially the chardonnay, have been among the finest in Margaret River for a decade and the reds have gradually been attracting attention. A listing in the fifth Langton’s Classification in the Distinguished category for the Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot places it among the top 40 cabernets in the country in a list of 123 ‘ultra-fine’ Australian wines.

The wines 2007 Voyager Estate Chardonnay The 2007 has heady aromatics, lemon curd and white peach flavours, creamy mid-palate richness and zesty acidity. The Voyager Cabernet Merlots – 2001 to 2005 From 2001 onwards, these are first rate cabernet merlots – close to the best produced in the region. The 2001 is still fresh and vibrant, with bright brambly, blackcurrant flavours, good weight and balance; 2002 (a more difficult vintage) lacks the depth of 2001 but is succulent with attractive flavour; 2003 needs time yet has power, concentration, redcurrant and cassis flavours and substantial slinky tannins; 2004 is a step up, plush, restrained, with brambly, blackcurrant flavours and a seductive velvety texture; while 2005 has concentration and power with more elegance and finesse. Steve James, who has been at Voyager since 1998 as viticulturist, took over as winemaker / viticulturist when Cliff Royle, moved on in 2009. He believes that improvements to the vineyards – removal of blue gums on the southern boundary, doing away with fertiliser and the reduction of irrigation – have helped quality. From 2000, Voyager has sourced fruit for the cabernet merlot from the outstanding North Block (planted in 1994) and from a grower in Wilyabrup. Both have made a difference to the quality of the finished wine.

his summer, you’re likely to see more pinot gris and pinot grigio wines at your local Liquor Barons store as these wines continue to emerge as one of the hottest new white wines. Pinot gris and pinot grigio are made from the same grape varietal but are two different styles of wine, made using different techniques. Pinot gris (pronounced pee-no gree) is based on wines from the Alsace region of France. It’s a fuller wine with more rich flavours made from riper grapes that often have just a touch of sweetness. Pinot grigio (pronounced peeno gree-jo) on the other hand is based on a style from Northern Italy and is less complex but more light, crisp and dry. Due to their different flavour profiles, gris and grigio pair well with different foods. For pinot grigio, a match of seafood such as oysters or prawns would work well; while pinot gris is better suited to richer, fatter foods such as roasted chicken.

While both pinot gris and pinot grigio have been produced for some years in Australia, it’s been in recent times that the wines have gained in momentum and popularity. As there is such a broad difference in the two styles, a new ‘style spectrum’ labeling system has been developed called PinotG which will indicate on the label on the bottle, the range in which the wine falls – from the spectrum of crisp at one end (where most grigio falls) to luscious at the other end (where more gris will lean towards). The new label system is very new and has only started rolling out in recent months on some bottles, but in time, more and more of these wines are expected to carry the indicative style label. In the meantime, head into any Liquor Barons store and ask your friendly staff to help you discover if you’re a ‘gris’ or ‘grigio’ kind of guy or girl.

odka has to be one of the world’s most versatile spirits. With a rich history and its roots in Eastern Europe, vodka has been the drink to fortify nations through war, floods and famine. The word vodka is a diminutive form of the Slavic word voda (water), interpreted as little water. It is made mostly from water and ethanol with traces of impurities, flavorings and fermented substances such as grain and potatoes.
